At the center of Game of Thrones was the fight for the Iron Throne, but there were plenty of relationships within the HBO series as well. Some of them were swoon-worthy, with viewers loving every minute of the romance. Others were less romantic and more cringeworthy. And some weren't romantic in nature at all.

Right from the beginning, or at least from the introduction of various characters, there were relationships that fans were totally behind. And in some cases, relationships that formed between two people actually surprised fans of the long-running show.
10 Rooting For: Missandei And Grey Worm
Right from the beginning, fans saw a spark between these two characters and had high hopes that something would materialize between them. But neither wanted to make the first move. Their romance was complicated since Grey Worm was the leader of the Unsullied and trained from a young age to consider himself a warrior first and an expendable fighter. Despite this dehumanization, however, Grey Worm clearly felt strongly towards Missandei and might have diverted from his teachings if it meant saving her or preventing her harm.
From their subtle flirtations to stolen kisses and intimate conversations, fans were rooting for these two to become partners in every way possible.
9 Surprised Everyone: Jaime Lannister And Brienne Of Tarth
It was obvious very quickly that Brienne was developing romantic feelings for, and had a physical attraction to, Jaime. But even when he appeared to have taken a liking to her, it didn't seem as though he reciprocated, at least not enough to actually go for it, nor that she would ever attempt to pursue anything.
So, when they actually did become intimate with one another, it was a total surprise to everyone, although it turned out to be one of Brienne's biggest mistakes. Jaime left her to go back to his twin sister, his one true love, breaking Brienne's heart in the process.
8 Rooting For: Tormund Giantsbane And Brienne Of Tarth
Tormund pined for Brienne, making a comment about or to her every time she entered the room, and often asking about her whenever she wasn't around. But Brienne was too focused on Jaime and seemed even repulsed by Tormund.
Even if Tormund's approach was aggressive, sometimes approaching creepy, he was a lovable, sweet character, and fan favorite. Thus, many fans had hoped Tormund would eventually get his wish, Brienne would warm to him, and the pair might finally get together.
7 Surprised Everyone: Jaime And Cersei Lannister
Revealed in the first episode of the first season, it was a shock when fans learned that Jaime and his twin sister Cersei were actually in love and sleeping with one another. Not only that but their relationship had been going on for many years and Jaime was even the father of Cersei's three children.

Safe to say, when fans found out, it was a huge surprise. To say it was an unhealthy relationship would be an understatement.
6 Rooting For: Arya Stark And Gendry Baratheon
It was sweet when Arya and Gendry developed a mutual liking for one another. And Arya, believing it might be her last chance, decided to spend her possible last night on earth with him. They seemed like a great couple, with Gendry being a kind soul who could help ground Arya.
However, it wasn't to be. Arya had other plans for herself that had nothing to do with becoming the Lady of Storm's End. So, despite fans rooting for the young couple, the relationship did not progress.
5 Surprised Everyone: Renly Baratheon And Loras Tyrell
The relationship between Renly and Loras was surprising, but somehow it worked. Renly may have been married to Loras' sister Margaery, but in an effort to maintain her power and position, she was more than fine keeping their secret and maintaining the facade.
Once the dynamics among the three were revealed, along with the reasoning behind Renly having to keep his relationship a secret, fans did root for the couple, who were clearly in genuine love with one another.
4 Surprised Everyone: Gilly And Samwell Tarly
Arguably the most successful relationship on the show, Gilly and Samwell not only endured through it all, but they both helped one another to become more confident in themselves. Yet fans did not see the romance coming, even though their first meeting and their subsequent interactions were adorable.

Least of all, Samwell never saw the romance coming because he was never used to women paying him any mind. The fact that they found one another was super sweet, and one of the most surprising romances on the show.
3 Rooting For: Daenerys Targaryen And Khal Drogo
Oddly, while Daenerys was effectively forced into marrying Khal Drogo, a man she didn't know and who clearly frightened her, things quickly turned. The young girl seemed to actually fall for Drogo once he showed her respect, admiration, and love.
Regardless of the nature of their relationship, the way he would do anything to protect her and the power she began to have because of her position and abilities, made the pair the power couple of Essos. They had one of the best relationships on the show.
2 Surprised Everyone: Jon Snow And Daenerys Targaryen
It wasn't a total surprise that these two extremely good-looking people of similar age would meet one another and feel a mutual attraction. Nonetheless, the fact that they actually began a relationship was a surprise.
Not only that, but Daenerys still feeling strongly for Jon on a romantic level even though she knew he was technically her nephew, which made it even more surprising that the romance (sort of) continued. It's a "romance" that not only surprised everyone, but one that fans wish had never happened in the first place.
1 Rooting For: Robb And Talisa Stark
Despite her not being the right match for Robb from a familial perspective – Talisa was just a healer from the battlefields – it was a standard story of forbidden love. Robb was promised to another, and the fallout of him not honoring his betrothal to someone else could be massive (and deadly), yet he went ahead and married her anyway, which made fans want to root for them even more.
The couple had a very wholesome romance, so it's natural that fans hoped they would have a happy ending. But The Red Wedding happened, and that bubble was quickly burst.
