when he returns home from his tour, he is asked by sal marcano, the don of the marcano crime family, to take over sammy's spot. lincoln refuses.

after sammy and lincoln orchestrate a heist on the us federal reserve, lincoln and sam are betrayed and lincoln is shot in the head while he watches his father and brother and friends die in front of him and is left for dead

he subsequently begins a brutal rampage of revenge as he takes over rackets across new orleans to control the entire city's crime network, allying with the haitian and irish mobs
