#the flame has taken his strength and you're putting him down to end his miserable existence more than anything else

One of my favourite things about the dark souls games and elden ring is that you're not leading the fight in some great battle that will be spoken of for generations to come, but rather you're exploring a world where you can see the remnants of great battles other people fought and you'll never learn the whole truth of what happened but the environment will teach you fragments
The age of greatness is clearly long gone and entire games are taking place in the shadows of history
And in the end you either quietly sacrifice yourself to maintain the status quo or you allow your era to continue drawing to its inevitable end, and either way no one will ever remember your lowly undead/tarnished except you
#i just think its FUN when you're the chosen one but it's not as a big flashy hero but as someone at the 'whimper' end of history#one of my favourite examples is fighting Gwyn at the end of DS1#and it's so obvious that he used to be great and now he's just so tired#the flame has taken his strength and you're putting him down to end his miserable existence more than anything else#and then that's the end of the game well done you win#vs say going back in time to fight Manus in his prime or artorias in the peak of his madness#and then when you do have a huge legend v legend face off such as vs gael#it doesn’t even matter because there’s no one else left to remember it
