The Apartment:

Description- Thao’s apartment is a quaint, little space. The walls are covered in faded wallpaper, along with dozens of framed photographs. Every shelf and surface holds a potted plant, sometimes accompanied with a picture frame. There’s only one chair in the whole space, it’s comfy and worn. Perhaps there is the illusion of space where other chairs might have been before they were sold. Overall it’s evident that he doesn’t get a lot of company. The kitchen is cramped, but kept clean. In a small window, jars sit on the sill with clippings of his plants. There’s a stack of overdue bills topped with a letter and a plane ticket to Laos.

Design- Soft diffused light, very few light sources. Enough sunlight for plants (brightest to dimmest depending on the plant). Kitchen is highlighted, produce and essential appliances. Desaturated green and yellow color palette.

The Restaurant:

Description- the restaurant itself is rather small, no more than 20 tables. It’s themed with bamboo and foliage. Lots of windows cause bright light to flood the space. The kitchen with have more of the focus. The space is mostly standing room, the walls are lined with fridges and grills. A pantry is stacked with Asian ingredients and fresh produce. There is some baskets with fish, shrimp, and other meats.

Design- organized chaos, lots of dry and fresh ingredients scattered around. More plants ! Bamboo inspired decor, round lights, family sized tables. Stainless steel, colder colors, almost draining life and energy. This will contrast the warm color palettes of Thao and the other workers.

The Garden:

Description- the garden lays outside the restaurant, bringing a splash of color to the faded exterior walls. It is filled with native Lao plants as well as plants from neighboring countries and domestic herbs. Some crops you can find are Chameleon plant, Amriti Tulsi, Thai eggplant, Thai basil, and edible flowers.

Design- plants of varying heights, lots of bright vivid color in the plants. Dim walls of the restaurant, stained with drips or mold. Raised bed/ borders with Lao inspired design, possibly bamboo or carved. Plants!
