#okay i promise i'm going to get off tumblr and actually get something decent done#but i just have to mention that i started reading 'thief liar lady'#the cinderella retelling where she's pulling a con#which i did not have high expectations for because that concept screams 'we're going to prove how dumb the original cinderella story is'#so i have to give it credit that so far it's pleasantly surprising me by pulling back every time it's about to do something stupid#within the first page or two we have 'they say the slippers were glass and the carriage was made of a pumpkin which is so dumb'#which seems like standard cinderella bashing but it's also framed as an explanation of the magic system#as in 'this is a waste of magic based on the rules' not 'this story is stupid and my 'real' one is better' so i can live with it#we have the enemy prince she's trying to con but he's not a dumb strawman royal#he's actually a sweet guy and a shrewd diplomat#all the royals are actually getting credit for talents as well as flaws#no strawmen in sight (i still shudder to remember 'just ella')#it feels like real politics#and there is *so much* politics and i am eating it up#(which makes me realize that one of the reasons i love cinderella retellings is that there's a lot of potential for politics)#we did have a scene where she goes into the throne room and meets a strange disheveled nobleman lounging on the throne#which made me roll my eyes because you could not have had a more obvious 'meeting the ya love interest' scene#but then there's a scene where she's like 'i don't care about embroidery'#and i internally groaned#but then she's like 'but i do like the embroidery circle because it's relaxing to be away from the men for a while'#so to my delight i could cancel the 'not like other girls' alert#the queen is feminine and her social skills are presented as a vital political skill#the swearing is really stupid and out of place and brings the book down#and i know that there'll most likely be something that makes me stop reading it before the 25% mark#but i do want to give the book credit for pleasantly surprising me#i'm liking it more than i otherwise would because of all the ways i was expecting it to disappoint me

Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl’s display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again. Sixteen-year-old Sophia would much rather marry Erin, her childhood best friend, than parade in front of suitors. At the ball, Sophia makes the desperate decision to flee, and finds herself hiding in Cinderella’s mausoleum. There, she meets Constance, the last known descendant of Cinderella and her step sisters. Together they vow to bring down the king once and for all–and in the process, they learn that there’s more to Cinderella’s story than they ever knew… YA. (Blurb from Goodreads)

GEEKERELLA REVIEW
GOODREADS SYNOPSIS: Anything can happen once upon a con… When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all—not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true. Teen actor Darien Freeman is less than thrilled about this year’s ExcelsiCon. He used to live for conventions, but now they’re nothing but jaw-aching photo sessions and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Federation Prince Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the diehard Starfield fandom has already dismissed him as just another heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, closet nerd Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.
I had seen the cover for this book floating around quite a bit and I have to say this was a total cover buy for me. The binding for the book is absolutely GORGEOUS, the design was phenomenal, and kudos for the wiener dog inclusion! It’s a pretty book to look at and the story isn’t half bad either!
Despite being pretty fantasy oriented as a reader, I’m a sucker for fairy tell retellings, especially when it involves fandom and conventions. I bought this and Queens of Geek (read my review for that here) together, and I liked this book far more in terms of representing geek/nerd culture.
As a 30-something year old woman, I did find it a bit unrealistic for these 17 year olds to be referencing things that were popular when they were toddlers or before they were even born. Obviously, if they were brought up in the culture then it would be part of their vernacular to say ‘Frak this!’ or reference things like Firefly or You’ve Got Mail, but it just felt a bit too try hard-y for me.
This definitely felt like a geeky version of the Hilary Duff Cinderella reboot with the texting back and forth, but I actually really enjoyed that aspect of the book. The characterizations were good! I loved that Cal (one of the evil stepsisters) went to the way of the ‘Ever After’ sister and turned out to be one of the nice ones. Elle’s woe as me whininess kind of irritated me at times, especially given she had less than a year before she could be all ‘BYE FELICIA’ to her step-monster. (Also, pet peeve, but how could Catherine sell the house if it was supposed to go to Elle when she turned 18? I feel like that was a ball dropped by the author.)
SAGE WAS MY FAVORITE! Badass, fierce, don’t give a fuck attitude, and the last bit with her and Darien made me super duper happy! I just wanted to reach into the book and high five the heck out of her!
FYI, whoever edited this book did an amazing job in the beginning but dropped the ball a tremendous amount for the 2nd half. Sentence structure wasn’t as tight, and there were either parts where a word/letter was missing or parts where a word/letter shouldn’t have been. Things like that really bug me because it tends to pull me out of the story and make me squint at the book in irritation.
All in all, this book is a really cute, fluffy read that I quiet enjoyed. It wasn’t slammed full of representation but the HEA was a POC and they had some LGBTQIA+ characters so that was nice to see. Predictable storyline. Predictable ending. If you’re looking for a fun, cute-sy, easy read then definitely add this to your TBR.
