war of 1812 kind of the world's funniest war tbh. baby fights in a corner whilst europe is exploding for the millionth time. i was reading a history book by european historians and they gave like a one-sentence reference to it and were under the impression that america was trying to join the napoleonic wars and failing miserably. they didn't even think it was a separate war. america tried to invade canada and it didnt work because they got cold. the white house got burned down. the states closest to canada didn't even want the war bc it disrupted their trade. maine got made into new ireland for the second time. none of the issues the war was supposedly started over were actually resolved by the war they just kind of went away on their own. the borders didn't even change. americans and canadians both firmly believed they'd won and made it a foundational part of their national identities. no one else cared. america got a national anthem out of it somehow
