oh ho ho i have looked up the massachusetts ballot questions and i am so personally excited to vote against the MCAS, the high school standardized test students must pass to graduate. it never impacted my own education because i was in the very last class not to have to take it (late 90s), but i was selected for the pool of beta testers the year before it was universally implemented.

i had a great time actually—get out of class for two days for a test that doesn’t even matter? i enjoyed the process of taking standardized tests (when they didn’t matter) because i had spent most of my pre-high-school days in a homeschool environment without grades, so they reminded of the trivia workbook pages that were rationed out and treated as rewards (in a one room schoolhouse with 5 kids, you take the thrills you could get—public school education was pretty amazing after that).

the most memorable part of it for me was that we got little boxes of raisins as a snack and mine had an inchworm in it. but even then as a dumbass teenager i remember giving feedback that this would be demoralizing and unfair if imposed on everyone. schools chose who would put in the test group, and every one was an A student! what kind of sample was that?

the MCAS wouldn’t become a compulsory requirement for graduation until no child left behind, but it still immediately changed things. my sister was one year behind me, and her experience in the same classes i had taken the year before was so much less inspiring. history and civics teachers who had been painstakingly gathering copies of real articles for decades about historical events had to teach from state approved textbooks. the cross-disciplinary fun projects for multiple subjects were cancelled. older teachers started phoning it in and planned their retirement.

anyway, one of the things i have always felt most grateful for in my life is that i squeaked through my public education before state testing choked it. it was a small rural public school (pretty well funded though, there are a lot of fancy summer homes in property taxing distance), and had very passionate teachers who were having extra creative fun squeezing out the last of their independence, knowing that testing was coming. i was one of the canaries in the coal mine and i will take great pleasure if my vote helps shut it down.

Hey, Jake & Jack fans, is this anything?

Both men imprisoned (literal & metaphorical).

Both offered an out from their current predicament by an outside force (arguably in the case of Brain Ghost Dirk).

Both have loose ties to Lord English visually.

Yellow initial glow & Gamzee involvement too.

Sometimes a guy just needs to explode (same pose too).

Both dual wielding weapons.

That same said weapon type (for Jack Noir) having killed Jane Crocker.

It's really looking like Jake is going to do her in.

I would also like to point out that we've had interactions involving these three (Jane, Jake, and Brain Ghost Dirk) before that consisted of similar topics & themes.

Brain Ghost Dirk implying that he's just there as moral support, a manifestation of Jake's powers, and as a coping mechanism. Jane also talking about ruling an empire with him while talking down to him, similar to how she saw and/or still sees him in Beyond Canon's Candy timeline. Jake also being uncertain about doing anything to harm her despite all the bad things she's doing.

Brain Ghost Dirk going away tells us that Jake's more hopeful than he's ever been. This is the moment where he is the most sure of his decisions than he's ever been in his life, whatever those decisions may be in regards to Jane and how to handle this situation.

He is probably going to shoot Jane down, quite literally. I would also argue that after all this time, the lad isn't beating the Lord English allegations. We might as well have a parallel of him killing Jane much like how Jack Noir killed her right before he got possessed by Lil Cal & given some of Lord English's immense power.

Alternatively maybe we'll get to see what the power of hope or hope bullets can do to someone whose done so much wrong & come so far off the deep end in terms of moral wrongdoings. Maybe with every shot that hits her, she'll begin to be swayed to the side of good & start to self-reflect.

I'm still not fully convinced that Gamzee actually cured Tavros' peanut allergy, I mean just look at the panel.

This could absolutely be interpreted as Jake injecting his hope power into the epipen and by proxy injecting both his power & the epipen into his son! If younger Jake is strong enough to defeat Grimbark Jade, then adult Jake might just be strong enough to defeat a peanut allergy is all I'm saying! In fact, now that I'm rambling about it, this seems like the more likely outcome is Jake's hope power swaying or (in the very least) confusing Jane mid-fight. Hope bullets, they would look cool & would be pretty strong!

The power of believing in others & wanting things to change can be a strong tool indeed, Mister English.

If there's one person who still believes in changing Jane's mind (or bringing her back to proper canonicity depending on how you interpret the recent lore), it would be Jake English, the believer.

Hello, just wondering if it’s possible to become advanced in your practice with the Gods as a minor? It doesn’t make sense to me whatsoever, as advanced would point to several years of in depth research, high understanding and a long history of kharis with the Gods, which seems difficult for anyone, let alone a minor.

Honestly, this is a really tough question to answer because I genuinely can't say. I don't think it's fair to judge someone's practice as "advanced" or not from the outside. We simply cannot say what someone's practice actually looks like unless we are that person. I think it would also help if we defined what exactly "advanced" means. Maybe "advanced" for a minor looks different than "advanced" for an adult. I also just don't like ranking religion in these kinds of ways. Like, "beginner" I understand using if someone has just started and feels they need more help, but I don't think it's a good idea, generally speaking, to rank one's religion with terms like "advanced" or "intermediate", as if it's some sort of real-life leveling system. That's an incredibly difficult thing to determine, too, because there's no set criteria for what makes someone "advanced" (this isn't a slight to you; it's just weird to me that anyone would use this term in HelPol).

I do think you may be judging this minor a bit too harshly, though, Nonny. Unless this person (or people) is causing direct harm by claiming to be something they're not (like claiming to be a priest and manipulating people with it, for example), then I don't really see a point in nit-picking about what level a minor considers their practice. Minors are chill and all, but I'll be so real and say that sometimes they say really weird things lol (saying this with peace and love) because they're still kids. When I was a minor, I remember saying some weird shit and having to learn from it, and that's an entirely normal part of being in that age-range. They're still learning how the world works, likely still learning how religion works for them, and they're testing different things out. Can it be a little annoying sometimes low-key? Yes, absolutely, but does that mean it's something we should hold against them? Eh, debatable, but I don't really think so, in this case. This person is still a kid, and kids make some wild claims sometimes. If they say they're "advanced", then let them be, even if you disagree. They'll likely figure it out on their own.

okay soo recently ive been reading through a lot of my older ficz to try and get a feel for how much the au haz changed since last year [ive been writing for the au since last year ??? hwaaaatt ??? D: ???]

and . among otherz thingz . ive kind of realized that my way of writing shrig nd larz [and . subsequently . their relationship also] haz changed so much ; id really like to take a moment and talk about all the progress ive made and how im pretty happy with the place ive ended up in right meow

at first . ive written their relationship to be something of a "behind clozed doorz" sorta deal – theyd only feel comfortable expressing romantic feelingz towardz one another when they were alone in a clozed off . secluded space

however . ever since mizu5 came out . ive been re-evaluating and reshaping their dynamic a lot [not only have i changed some of my viewz since march / april – october . but mizu5 waz such an important event for me . becauze i had taken a ton of inspo from it to uze for larz]

and thiz now sorta breakz up into two :

shrignoldz feelingz ; he thinkz of hiz feelingz az something "impure" . and that "thiz izn't the correct way to think" – he doez everything in hiz power to try and "rezist temptation" for he iz a divine figure . and thinkz thiz iz just "a test from the great lord" but . even so . he can't help but feel drawn to larz ; in certain momentz . thiz sort of wall hez barricaded comez down for just a fraction of a second and . instead of meeting him with hostility and apprehension . will really express hiz appreciation for the other ... but not in that way !!!

and larz feelingz ; hez evolved CONSIDERABLY more than shrignold in thiz year [i mean . hez no longer just a "comic relief" character] ; the feelingz he has for the lovebug are something he wholeheartedly knowz will never be reciprocated – already . larz knowz shrignold would never see him az someone to love but . if he knew about hiz secret . hez certain that it would only end worse for him – hiz past experiencez have convinced him hez unlovable if he confessez to anything ; he sometimez sayz vaguely flirtatiouz thingz . but a lot of people will typically play them off az a joke or az just "drunken babblingz" ; he really wantz there to be a world where he and shrig could be together . but itz definitely not thiz one
