RWBY LiveThoughts: Episodes 8 and 9

So I missed last weeks episode since I got busy with stuff (school mostly, basic bitch busy day and all) so here’s two for one.

Gotta say, Im interested to see where this is going...

So something I missed the last few episodes; the final shot of the opening has the words “happily ever after” turn into “happy never again”, which I am both trepitided by and also intruged.

Cut to the jail cell AGAIN...Schnee’s looking a bit ansty. Boi probably thought he was getting out sooner. Suck it mate, your lawyers are DEAD.

Convinent blast of fire is convinenet...knocks out the cell doors and punches a hole but thats it. My money’s on Cinder

Honestly that animation seems oddly...flat. Like they just did the bare minimum...the ship breaks cleanly too. ~12 or so bits in between its nose and tail section. Kinda reminds me of how the UNSC Savannah blows up after suffering a reactor breach in Halo Reach’s “Long Night of Solace” mission.

Also this episode has been making excessive use of sweat drops. Did they get that figured out or what

However the fact that the bones have TWISTED and resulted in the Hounds form is...interesting. Unless those were there first (and they seem to be as they last past the Hound vanishing)...was that a secondary feature? He had the ears...

okay, okay okay, okay. so here i go, idk if there will be a point in this but im gonna write it up anyways. so follow me down this weird half thought thur path or whatever

okay, so we know that tfatws takes place 6 months after endgame, long enough for things to no longer be new and the problems with what the avengers did (or undid if you prefer) are really setting in, not even a full year. the people who came back from the blip have only had 6 months to figure out whats going on, where their families were if they still had them, ect, ect and only 6 months for the people who were left behind to “adjust” to having everything ripped away from them. i do wonder about a lot of things from this time, but i doubt that we’ll get a ton of concrete answers about it.

anyways.

when we see sam in the opening action scene hes very confident and self-assured. hes in his element so to speak. hes strong, smart on his feet, and we see sam use his new wings as a shield multiple times which to me feels like either a kind of statement that sam doesnt need the shield or to show that he would be really good with the shield, it feels important somehow considering who important the shield becomes in the show.

also, the military guy tells sam that once the LAF get across the tunisia boarder its supposed to be a no-fly zone so to speak which is why it was important for sam to get him before which hints that not everywhere got rid of boarders. like, tunisia is in northern africa and when we meet the flag smashers later theyre mostly in eastern eurpoe and also torres makes a comment about things not being better during the blip and his american (im pretty sure) so again where these things are happening in relation to boarders and the like it still makes me think about how the world worked through the blip, but again probably wont get concrete answers.

also in this episode we see the first instance of sam being recognized for who he is by a man from tunisia (who im going to consider a character of color tho im not sure if this is considered accurate in the real world) and not recognized by white american men, this happens in episode two as well.

while the shield sort of becomes the super important symbol, we are also shown in this episode that steve has been kind put on a pseudo god-like position. yes, its a joke to ask if hes the moon of all places, but the whole “looking down on us”/”watching over us” feels a lot like the christian capital-G God. he has been put on this kind of pedestal by the people who really didnt know anything about him and also bucky (but hes been hanging by a thread for a while it seems so its a little different) in contrast to sam.

sam has a lot of respect for steve. he calls him courageous, righteous, and hopeful. the best in us because these emotions are supposed to inspire “good works” as it were. sam then states that the world needs new heroes for the current times and that symbols only have meaning because of the people who give them meaning. and upon my rewatch this feels sam want to preserve the meaning that steve, his friend, imbued into the shield but also wants to move forward. i do think that the fact that sam is a black man who is not treated very well by america plays into his decision as well, i also think the fact that we hear the lines from endgame:

- it feels like it belongs to someone else.

-it doesnt.

is important. right now im thinking that the shield is essentially meaningless because steve is gone for all intents and purposes and he dropped it without a second thought. like i get it, in terms of what the show is doing and like i said, how people who dont know steve would probably react but even so many weeks later it sits weird. even the dora milige left the shield behind even though its made of stolen vibranium, cause its just a thing. anyways...

rhodey, after the speech, parrots back at sam that they do live in a different time, but he thinks that this different time does require someone to carry the shield.

then we meet sams sister and his nephews. sam and his sisters relationship does hold a lot of tension between them but theres still so much love there as well. its very normal, reminds me of tension that i feel between myself and some of my family members and that i see between different family members as well.

sarah wilson is a black woman who, like many black women I know, have been holding things together the best she can with (seemingly) not much help. we know that sam left after their father died (i dont remember if their mother is also dead), he couldnt handle it as stated, so he went off and fought. but in being gone he sarah ran the business the best she could. shes also a widow, not sure when that happened but y'know thats there too.

but ii think that how sam feels about his familys home and boat in contrast with how he treated the shield kind of. sam references the boat as their familys legacy (sarah also calls their dad a 'giant' and that not mattering to the bank and probably others) and he doesnt want to let that go no matter what. however both of these are acts of preservation on sams part, just in different ways. he tried to let one go while desperately trying to hold on to the other, one to be put in stasis and one to move forward, grow, passed down ect, ect.

now sam really only tries to get involved with the flag smashers because he theyre super soldiers. and i guess youd call this the inciting incident part of act one.

now the next three episodes are very intertwinded in the plot and what kind of world sam would be becoming captain america in. sam makes an off handed comment that sharon, zemo, and bucky are more worldly than him but thats true. and he does have to...learn, is the best word i have. i mean, the most he can do right now is “make a call” as he puts it which really isnt a lot considering whats been going on.

and to backtrack (sorry if this is all over the place) we do see sam constantly empathizing with the flag smashers and more specifically karli consistently throughout the show. if they werent super soldiers hed not have crossed their path the way that he did. throughout the show, well before episode 4, sam is really focused on like where exactly the super soldiers are coming from, the fact that the flag smashers are stealing money, and food, and medicine he doesnt really care.

when he has his heart to heart with karli the main problem that he has honestly, is the murders (and i do wish that there was distinction made cause that is important, but i know that in show sam probably doesnt know that karli blew up a building with people tied up in it like we do but its important that we know that), when he says that the killings wouldnt make the world better just different along with karli saying “theyre roadblocks on my journey and id kill them again if i had to” (which is 1. very dehumanizing, 2. she says 'my' and not 'our', and 3. she didnt have to kill these low level workers) is more  a restructuring of power instead of dismantling it.

like theres a lot here but my minds not connecting fully.

i know the show isnt over so ii dont really have a conclusion (i honestly havent even said half of what I took notes about) but its like 4 am here and I gotta go to bed. And I dont want this ti be multiple parts right now I just needed to get this outta my system lol.

*Meeting her kidnapper*

Dorgen walked down the halls of his prison with anger in his eyes. Since the attacks on more and more people from the Avagnar tribes have been fleeing to Kahkol Iloh or for the borders of Yanxia and the Red Sea to go into hiding. Families were being torn apart and people were missing. Now all he could do was fill more cells and hope for something or someone to come along and change things for the better. He hoped it would happen before the attacks started again.

As he continued down the hall he ran into one of his prison guards, Baidur.

"We found a woman in one of the houses in the Onsal Hakair. Shes pretty young, looks to be about eighteen or so. I've never seen her before though so we thought we would bring her in. We figured she must be another from the north" he said. "Good, has she said anything since you brought her in?" "No, she just woke up a little while ago and we thought you might want to talk to her first and see if you recognise her."

Dorgen followed followed Baidur to the cell that held the new prisoner and stopped outside the door. "Hey could you go fill in for me over in the west wing. I'm supposed to be making rounds right now. We wouldn't want them to think our security is low." "Sure boss. Just call me if you need me for anything." "Thanks I owe you one." Dorgen said patting Baidur on the shoulder.

As Baidur turned the corner Dorgen unlocked and opened the door to the new prisoners cell. "Whats your name and where are you from?" "Why should I tell you anything. You killed my family!" She yelled crying out of fear. "You will answer me or I will leave you in here to rot!" He shouted back at her. She closed her eyes and wiped her face. Crying would do her no good and would only show her weak. "M-my name is Kharina." She managed to stay her voice low and raspy. "Who are your parents?" "My parents are Namalese and Vhiktor" Dorgen laughed mockingly. "That's funny. Now tell me the truth." "That is the truth I swear. What is this place and why am I here?" "I know Vhiktor and I know for a fact that Nemalese only had one child. A boy by the name of Rhanar. So save your lies for someone else. Do I look stupid to you or something?" "Yes its true. Nemalese only had one child. I was found and taken in when I was a baby. Nemalese and Vhiktor are my parents. They may not be my birth parents but they are my parents." "I don't believe you and seeing as they are gone I have no way of knowing if its true. Lets see... If you are really from this area you will be able to tell me all about it. First question, what was the name of leader Malrek's only daughter?" Kharina  looked down, "I don't know but I swear I'm from here." "Your lying, and for that you will just have to stay here. I hope whatever you were doing in that house was worth it."

Kharina began to protest but as she did Dorgen walked out and slammed the door behind him.

Dorgen walked a few cells down and called Baidur back. “She claims to be Vhiktor's daughter. Do you recall Vhiktor ever having a daughter?” “I know he has a son but I've never heard anything about a daughter.” "Thats what I thought. Leave her in there for a day or two maybe her story will change.” Dorgen then walked out leaving Baidur to his work.

Six months had passed since the man had came in and asked her who she was. He had come back only once since then and asked the same questions. When her story didn't change he only grew more angry and decided she belonged there. "I have to get out of here" she whispered to herself, "but how?" She rarely was let out of her cell and the only time she saw anyone else is when they slipped her food through a slot in the door. How was she supposed to get out of here and where was even "here"? If she managed to escape how would she even find her way and where would she go? She had nothing left but a pendant from her past and a ring that she couldnt remove.

A Dark Step

Chapter 1

A bitter… bitter taste really, it was all she could ever think about. Just because she was raised and modified to be a part of the omnic faction didn't mean she was any less human… or did it? 

She threw a stone into the small river under the bridge. The rings it left behind soon faded away. It only reminded her about her home life. She had no human to relate to, no human family, siblings, aunts, uncles. There was no one she could relate to. For she was a monster of her own being. 

Another pebble carelessly flew through the air. She wanted nothing more than Overwatch to pay. She wanted them to pay for what they did to her perfect family. For doing everything in their power not help her when she needed them most. They were awful people really, and she hated everything about them. 

They took everything she ever had. The happy little life the omnics had made for her. They all looked after her and treater her as their own. Letting her use her mechanics to explore the base she lived at by creating and intensifying their weapons and armor for battle. Yet, Overwatch gave her no mercy. Her closet, bed, bathroom, mail box, a full fridge, a warm fireplace, her tail, her wings…granted the weren't the best models, but…

She gritted her teeth both from the pain and the cold. How dare they, how dare they. Her tattered shirt was both wet and cold, as the seasons were in the process of changing. There was no where for her to go. Granted, she heard rumors that the Overwatch HQ always had rooms open to the homeless and would grant shelter for the night, yet she couldn't imagine stooping down to their level. 

Just then, footsteps echoed through the small space. A quick breath was brought into her lungs before holding it for a moment. If she had to run, she would, yet staying was also a very dangerous choice, a choice she was willing to make. As she had nothing left to lose, not even her dignity. Wiggling further into the darkness, she watched the three strangers approach the opposite side of the water. A lean figure following a caped figure, or so it seemed. 

Floating..? She questioned, her eyes following the leader of the two. A soft grumble left one of the bodies. Her eyes narrowed. The familiarity of it was all too close to that of the leader of Talon. She heard many stories about them and their kind. How they were even more merciless than Overwatch, how all they did was take. It seemed so cruel to be so, yet they were beyond the destruction that Overwatch caused. They weren’t portrayed as the good guys like Overwatch was. They weren’t seen as peace like Overwatch was. They were a special kind of annihilation. 

“The winged beast was it?” The voice rang out, no doubt in her mind that it belonged to that of Widowmaker, the co-leader of Talon, “How she tried so hard to save what little she had, to fight on the backs of her omnic family. But alas, why should Overwatch care about a little orphan girl and her Omnic people?”

She gritted her teeth as a growl entered her throat. How dare she talk about her family like that! The thought of them going around acting like they were all that really pissed her off. They were everything to her as well as all she had. She had no blood line, as she knew in her heart from long ago that they were killed in the lanky on going war. 

“She used her enhanced abilities to excel herself, making wings and a tail in order to fight back the Overwatch forces. Yet, due to her miscalculations, ended up destroying more of herself than she could bargain.” The man, presumed to be Reaper, leader of Talon, said in a hushed malicious tone. 

“What do you two want?” She barked as she stood from her shadowed corner. Her body shook from the cold, not from fear, for she had concurred much worse than these low life’s. In the frigid air, she didn't have anything more than a tattered t-shirt and a pair of ripped up jean shorts, yet it wouldn't stop her from fighting. She winced when she put weight on her left leg, forgetting that she had slipped and fallen down the concrete stairs a while ago, almost sure that she had fractured her leg in one way or another. 

“Wounded, I see, well there’s really no point in running away anyhow,” Reaper snickered as he floated over to her side of the river. Trying to hold her ground, she pulled her arms up to defend herself, yet the weight her leg was baring quickly became too much. Falling back on her behind, she looked up at the masked man, prepared to protect herself no matter what the cost, “we’re not here to hurt you, only to offer you a fresh start.”

“A fresh start? A fresh start? You really think that I would take up this ‘fresh start’ to the likes of you!”

“He means a second chance at taking down your beloved Overwatch.” Widowmaker whispered, after landing gracefully next to her. 

Her eyes widened and trembled with rage, as if her irises were wound with animosity. “Oh,” she drawled out as if she were on some psychotic drug, “Oh is that what you mean? Is that what you truly mean? Don't you dare lie to me now!” she growled deep in her throat, “Such offers,” she took a breath seething through her teeth, “such offers don't tend to come up so easily from the leader of Talon without a price.”

“We would give you all the resources you'd ever need to get back upon your feet. A room, computers, a bed, a pace to stay. After working for us for a bit, you’ll eventually gain battlefield status. And with that brain of yours,” Widowmaker tapped her forehead gesturing to her bionic enhancements, “ I’m sure the research bit of it will come rather easy.” she said smirking the whole time.

“So what do you say little one?” Reaper asked extending his hand to her.

The thought was exquisite, exciting, ravishing. A second chance to take down her biggest opponent? An offer she couldnt back down on. But…

“Wait, what’s the catch?” She said with a hard glare on her face, “Of course you guys are the actual bad guys, or at least thats how everyone these days sees it. So there must be a catch.”

“No catch little girl-” Widowmaker started.

“I’m 17,” she sneered, “17, no home, no family, no place to go. I’ve made it like this for weeks. So you better not talk to me like I'm some petty little child. That’s rule one for a person of the likes of me.”

“Well then, I see you are a feisty little one. A perfect addition to Talon. With that attitude we will get you going on the field in no time.” Widowmaker snickered, “The only catch, is that you work under the oath of Talon, never giving in to the lies of what Overwatch holds.”

“Bullshit,” she said with a slight smile on her face, “is that really all? You really think, that someone like me would just give in so easily? HA! They’d have to kill me first!” She practically yelled.

“Do you want this life time opportunity or not?” Reaper spit out.

“Well Christ man, hell yes I do.” She said, a venomous feeling running through her veins. Reaper let out a maniacal laugh before asking her name.

“Surely you must have one.”

TLJ felt like watching two completely separate movies. .. .  one i deliriously LOVED and one i spit upon and shake its profane dust off my sandals

THE GOOD

“ive got an urgent message for General Hux” “YOUR REBELLION IS DOOMED” “yeah... im holding for General Hux”

it straight up took me a minute and a half of this scene to figure out this was actually the start of the movie. it felt like one of those pre-movie skits where it seems like a movie but then anthropomorphic M&Ms tell you to turn your cell phone off. was it just me or were there a LOT more comic moments in TLJ compared to almost every other star wars movie? anyway i loved it even tho it gave the movie a slight someone-made-this-while-high-on-LSD feel

DOES THIS MEAN ANYONE CAN COME BACK IF THEY WANT??? why was yoda so physical even as a ghost that he could whack luke on the head

the casino subplot. . .  it was awesome for Finns character development but couldn’t he have developed character over an actually materially relevant story arc.. . .

LUKE SKYWALKER the guy who wouldnt believe that DARTH VADER, ENSLAVER OF WORLDS, SLAUGHTERER OF CHILDREN, MASS MURDERER OF THOUSANDS, was a lost cause and who refused to kill him, TRIED TO KILL HIS APPRENTICE IN HIS SLEEP

character assassination. it is ludicrously greater-than-Anakin Skywalker levels of overreaction to a Force premonition that Luke would see a vision of darkness and instantly move to slice his sleeping, defenseless nephew in half, and even in Luke's version of the story Luke is legitimatly the bad guy. he brought about the future he was afraid of, just like Anakin

because of this background, every interpretation is blown wide open to reasonably see Kylo as the victim and Luke's actions as those of a villain. of course he had to defend himself? it's legitimately possible to construe the subsequent killing of the other students as self-defense as well. if they wake up to find Ben having "killed" Luke? anything could have happened, Kylo could honestly have done barely anything bad up to this point and have been driven to the dark side on that one night

it's going to take.... so much work.... to walk this back. obviously Kylo's a villain now, because of what he's chosen to do since then, but for Luke to come out of this not looking like trash, they would have to provide SO MUCH more backstory including the "dark" things Kylo had done to make Luke suspect him, and have him probably be actively seeking darkness while under Luke's tutelage. and then Luke still seems like a fool and a betrayor

maybe they WANT Luke to come off as a legitimately bad person? i've seen some interpretations of TLJ as tearing down "legends" by showing everyone as flawed people, teaching the lesson of not deifying people to Rey AND the audience as well. if thats true and they actually want me to believe Luke is not worth believing in, i'm sorry but i reject that

a powerful student turns to the dark side and destroys the Jedi Order. an authoritarian regime destroys the republic and takes over. a small band of resistance fighters rallies against great odds. a Force sensitive from a desert planet teaches herself the Force from old Jedi books after her teacher evaporates into the Force after teaching like 1 lesson. everyone Leia loves dies

it's just exhausting. what is the point? in the sequel trilogy we've seen the republic destroyed, the resistance decimated and harried from place to place until theyre down to 12 people on the millennium falcom. there's only one movie left. they're going to come back from nothing and destroy the first order and then smile at each other in the ashes?

why?>??? what are they going to do? build a republic again? is rey going to build a new jedi order? we've seen how that worked out

there's nothing to believe in here. HOPE is such a strong theme in the sequel trilogy. "as long as there's light we've got a chance" "leia sent me here with hope" "the galaxy has lost its hope, the spark is out." "hope is like the sun, if you only believe in it when you can see it you'll never make it through the night." like good grief. constantly hammering on the need to have hope, but WHY?

what's the point of defeating the imperials, spending your life trying to build something good in the galaxy, trying to build a family, when you're only going to have to do it all again in your old age, when everyone you love is dead?

i cant see any hope if this is the ending for the OT characters, so i powerfully struggle to care about and cheer for Rey, Poe, and Finn. what's the point in anything they're doing? what's the point in the sacrifices they're making? it might turn out just exactly like it did for Luke, Leia, and Han, spending their old age in loneliness, sorrow, and violence

if this is the way history repeats itself, you probably should just make out like the stuttering codebreaker. "dont join"
