for pride month, i have:
a list of how the hazbin hotel had their gay awakening. (or lesbian, or bi, or trans, or aroace, pan, etc)
Charlie: she watched Sleeping Beauty, the year after it came out. she looked at Snow White and thought “wow, she’s so pretty.. but also Price Florian.. wait.” because this was in 1938, she didn’t know what bisexuality was, but she knew and accepted her feelings, because it wasn’t a big deal to her. in the 1970s, she found the label for it— bisexuality— and thought “OH THERE’S A NAME FOR THIS, YAY!” and that was that.
Vaggie: when she was still alive, in 2010, a friend sent her a photo of a genderbent character from some TV show, and her first thought was “oh, okay, i see why everyone’s in love with them now. …wait.” she spent the next 20 minutes looking up female versions of characters and realizing “oh. OH THAT EXPLAINS SO MUCH” (based on my own story)
Angel: honestly, he can’t really say. he just kinda knew from the beginning that men were just hot, and he’d marry a guy if he could. molly just assumed he meant “yeah, men are just better than women” and went along with it, even though she personally thought both were radiantly beautiful. (she found out what pansexual meant in 1972.)
Husk: he has no idea. if asked, he just shrugs and goes “any hole is a goal, i couldn’t care less.” at one point, Angel just shoved a poster at him, Husk read it and was like “oh. i guess that’s me.” pretty chill reaction, just continued his normal day, but kept thinking “okay, wow, that’s ME.”
Sir Pentious: he just thought all people liked both men and women, but because of societal rules and whatever, they had to wait until they had a crush on the opposite gender. ..what do you mean thats not what being straight is. (he only found out what bisexuality was after he came to the Hotel and Charlie had a bi flag pin. he asked her what country that was, and she had to sit him down to explain the concept of LGBTQ+, and no, it is ABSOLUTELY NOT a mental illness, wtf, you’re fine, buddy, go be happy.)
Alastor: post-season 1, like three people separately wished him a happy asexual awareness week and he was so confused, he asked Angel to look up ‘a sexual’ on his phone because he couldn’t find anything at the library. (he was looking at the outdated library in cannibal town.) he read the definition, and locked himself in his room for the rest of the day. if anybody heard muffled screaming and somehow-happy-sounding swearing, nobody mentioned it.
Vox: pfft, what? no, he’s not gay! he’s perfectly straight! is it gay to say that men are just as good at women? …Val, what do you MEAN ‘no but yes’? (Valentino explained the entire history of LGBTQ+, stressing bisexuality. Vox just said “okay, okay, hear me out.. there’s a whole month for them, right? their whole thing is rainbows? what if we paint all of our logos rainbow-colored? they’d buy it!” Valentino gave up, because Vox just COULD NOT comprehend what he was trying to say. but he keeps sending bisexual memes to Vox.)
Valentino: he just always knew. come on, everyone’s hot, unless they aren’t. even better if they can be exploited. that’s all there is to it.
Velvette: pfft, she grew up with social media, she’s known about this shit since she was a kid. fuck love, fuck fucking, she’d rather pester Vox into making cheesy garlic bread. the guy’s a bitch, but he makes good cheesy garlic bread.
Baxter: back before he and sir pentious became bitter enemies, they were both talking about.. whatever. at one point, they got on the topic of clothing, and Baxter— then Bella— griped that he hated how dresses felt. too heavy, too annoying, and it made him feel sick, anyway. suits were just better, not just because they’re lighter. man, he wished he were a boy. pentious asked if he wanted to be a boy in general, not just for the suits, and after a moment, Baxter excused himself quickly to go find something in his library, shooing Pentious out of the house. a couple days later, he came out, transitioned, all that. the only reason he doesn’t cut off his light-lure thingy is because it’s useful. other than that, he avoids looking at it as much as possible.

I started the fandom with CQL but then read the book and I dont understand why certain drama fans hate the novel because for me it added so much more depth and understanding to the story. I get that it made certain characters look worse or whatever but I feel like thats what made the story better. After reading the novel I kinda wish we could've seen more of the darker bits. Like I get that maybe they had to tone it down to get it on TV but a person can wish right?
There are many reasons I suppose for why people don’t like the book.
the novel contradicts a lot of fan interpretations and CQL-based fanon
the novel requires reading comprehension skills which is very sexy but many people who prefer visual mediums do not necessarily have great reading comprehension skills
some people think they want fiction without dramatic tension and drama, or that having tension is an issue to be fixed, or want pure cinnamon bun characters who never do anything problématique ever or whose problématique actions can be handwaved away with mental gymnastics
some people think two dudes looking at each other with heart eyes is more valid than a gay couple actually getting married bc the novel was written by an assumed-to-be-straight woman
and the list goes on.
I know people think it’s bad form to say this, but the novel is objectively a stronger piece of fiction than the web series. Period. I have no issues with people having a personal preference for CQL! No one needs to justify their personal preferences! But I just wish we’d all stop pretending that the level of writing or the technical execution of CQL is anywhere close to MDZS just to make sure no one feels invalidated in their personal preferences. It’s not a competition, it’s just analysis!!!!
Tumblr media
And same, I wish we could have gotten a very graphic and scary version of a visual adaptation of MDZS. Like this show would have it all: corpses! cannibalism! genocide! blood pools! stabbing! revenge! We could have had it all......

food ment. Helllooooooo ugh would you like me to beat her up perhaps end up like her namesake, og mischa?(jk im not a (cannibal)) time to bust out the therapy voice tho , you will find your people and they will love you. Ok. ok wtf is happening? are we like the same person or something? wellbutrin buddies ❤ my room needs to be clean and moved the whole sha bang but I cant😔 life needs to be lived and such. I hope you arrived safely and happily and that everything is slightly better for you than it was last message and that you didn't get too carsick. my power went out today for like 3 seconds everything turned off everything , it usually takes alot for that to happen for my house just because its old and other reasons that I dont actually know. I've had a jam out session yesterday, it was so relaxing 😌 🙌 danced my little heart out to them guys I told you about. There's something abt the murders in hannibal that just does it for me... the artistry of it all. I love it when we talk outside of the 5 daily things too!!! hey, did you get that 'you're so mature for your age' as a kid or 'you've got an old soul' ? whats ur thoughts on that? I personally cant really imagine saying that to a kid maybe its a generational thing? ok 🙄😁 I like commentary ive been watching reactions? on youtube its a guilty pleasure, also I've been getting into some reality tv. Wife swap is crazy I love it alot and then the dating ones because ofc. whats one of the 1st reality show you remember watching and not hating? Honey Boo Boo and I Am Jaz (I think?) were my top two choices of reality. maybe a rewatch is in order for me. ok daily things um a guitar got brought into my house today i... its very.. it made me weirdly happy I love music and its instruments. thank goodness tbh my med were just a little later than usual, the pharmacy gave me emergency 3 days for they can figure out whats up because this is the second time we are having the same problem 😅 I had the best brownie of my life, it was store bought but like from the bakery fav dessert. I got this "new" shirt on so comfy, its tie dyed splattered different blues with an astronaut and nasa logo in white, its cute but also like 3? sizes too big (its a hand me down) dont worry abt the guy if a next time happens ill be ready for it 💪 it will go down, I personally know the man's family I will ruin his life if it comes down to it (we live in a town idk if it's small)or realistically just sic my family onto him. I found out my cousin has a gf now and is apparently very much happier than she was with her ex man (who made awesome cheesecake btw off topic tho) gay people stay winning, I did not know she was not straight tho so happy little surprise 😁 jeez its a lot of words uh I hope you're doing good and you had a good sleep and other nice stuff happen to you and you had a good trip🌷🤟🤙❤
HELPPP u are an angel. thank u❤️. and right exactly. normalize thinking fictional murders are artistic or something . thinkin abt how i used to think criminal minds murders were interesting but never had the right words so i'd just be like "woah he *kills them weirdly*? cool"😭. BUT YEAH i did get that all the time omfg "ur so mature for ur age!!" like thanks it's because i have issues and problems 💀....hmm i hate reality tv HAHA. this gc i'm in was just talking abt wife swap the other day how crazy !! idk if i've EVER liked reality tv .... i like watching commentary abt it (like uhh cody ko's stuff) but watching it myself... nope😭. daily things lets see!!! i went to the baltimore aquarium:) i was exhausted tho. saw that a tiktoker i like (hello fem will graham cosplayers...) went there a few days before me. how funny! i wish we had met and fallen in love or something. i went to bed at 5pm yesterday and slept til 3am. then went back to sleep from 6am to 10am. i think my new adhd/anxiety meds are the cause. sadly. cuz they work! but by making me too tired to be nervous or start thinking too much🥲. i'm tired 24/7 already and thats not helping LOL! i had this fancy meal ok multiple fancy meals and it was really nice. i got chesapeake chicken (haha like chesapeake ripper am i right?!?) and it had crab but i'm crazy i'm crazy i didn't eat the crab. the texture was soooo bad. anyway at another place i got a burger bc i'm lame i don't eat seafood (besides shrimp. which i am allergic to.) and i ate almost the whole thing and my friends mom said she was proud of me😭❤️. i always feel so guilty after eating a lot and that made me feel good. i've started watching more vampire video game play throughs. what can i say. vampire masquerade: bloodlines did something to my brain where i like vampire games now. it's the same guy which is cool. i dont like finding new youtubers becuz i've never kept up w whose problematic or not... like what if i get really into someone and mention it and someone's like oh yeah he preys on women. wtf. like umm cry? is he a youtuber? is he evil? cuz i was looking for a pathologic gameplay and he had one and i was like hmm... he sounds familiar. he has probably done something ? maybe? mm lastly.... i read this hunger games hannibal crossover WEEKS AGO but it's just still on my mind. i don't particularly love the hunger games but it's only bc i don't really know a lot abt it. i enjoy it but i've only seen the movies and read the first book (until rue died. never picked it up again after that! i cried a lottttt) and there's like an absurd amount of hannibal crossovers. i guess bc hannibal would totally rule in the hunger games. like come on a CANNIBAL? the uh.. capitol? they'd go crazyyyy for that. the fic itself wasn't even that groundbreaking or anything i have a lot of criticism for it tbh but it opened my brain to the concept. i have another one opened in a tab but it's super long so i haven't made much headway. i want one where it's like.... the one where the old winners come back for a game! and then they escape😈. but in the one i read will and hannibal sort of just escape anyway in a normal hunger game. like ok cool but i don't think that's plausible. but then how would it work ? like could will win a game on his own? maybe i should write my own fic. but then i'd have to understand what happens in the hunger games /j. ugh ok i was thinking abt that one scene where idk they do the little hand signal thing and drag katniss away and go to shut the door like right as they shoot that guy in the head. THAT WAS SO CRAZY. or when katniss shoots the lady instead of president snow and then everyone just descends on him💀 i feel like there's a level of nuance and understanding that i just don't have so i say "woah! cool :)" i hope ur doing well too ily❤️❤️💗

Raw director Julia Ducournau on how to make a horror film as creepy as possible
The brains behind the French cannibal film that overwhelmed Toronto audiences shares her tricks for creating menacing, hair-raising body horror
Tumblr media
Julia Ducournaus debut feature film, Raw, made headlines at Toronto last year when a couple of horrified audience members fainted in the cinema and an ambulance had to be called. All publicity is good publicity, but the director wasnt thrilled.
For me, its really something that I could have done without, Ducournau said in January in Paris, to tells a room full of press. Her film which opened this week in Australia had just screened; none of us fainted. I saw it snowball on the internet for a week afterwards, and theres pretty much nothing you can do about that. At one point people were talking about a movie that is not mine … My movies not a shocker, its not a blood fest; its more than that.
Ducournaus cannibal horror film is as much body horror as it is black comedy and coming-of-age drama, and it uses the cinematic grammar of all three. Naive teen Justine (Garance Marillier) heads off to join her sister Alexia (Ella Rumpf) at veterinary college. As part of a brutal hazing, she is forced to eat a rabbit kidney and thats when the cravings take hold.
The film is troubling, riveting, claustrophobic and darkly hilarious. The Guardians Peter Bradshaw was among many critics who praised it: What is very impressive about Raw is that absolutely everything about it is disquieting, not just the obvious moments of revulsion: there is no let up in the ambient background buzz of fear, he wrote.
At the Paris press event, Ducournau examined a few of the techniques that had got her there.
I asked them to watch horror movies and drink beer
It should come as no surprise that a coming-of-age film about cannibalism, in which the protagonist is a virgin vegetarian woman, should be so much about flesh: the hating of it, the coveting of it, the grabbing and the biting of it. Key scenes revolve around intense physicality from the young actors, which meant the leads needed to get to know each other, fast.
From the first day of the shooting, I wanted them to be completely OK with each others bodies, Ducournau said. Obviously I didnt ask them to get naked in front of each other Im not a tyrant or a perv but I did ask them to watch horror movies together.
Under Ducournaus orders, Marillier, Rumpf and Rabah Nat Oufella (who plays Justines gay roommate and love interest, Adrien) gathered at Marilliers house before shooting began to watch scary movies.
When you watch horror movies together it creates something very intimate, the director said. For her part, she watches one a night. When youre scared, you tend to get a bit closer to the person next to you … and because they are different gender, it was [especially] important to me that they were completely at ease with each other. Of course, I asked them to drink beer as well.
From the first day of the shooting, I wanted [the cast] to be completely OK with each others bodies, says Raw director Julia Ducournau.
I put everything close to the ground
Much of the film takes place in college, particularly in college dorms, which swim in the organic, heaving messiness of teens. When you look in the room of a teenager, you will always have some food that is mixed with clothes and you always have these weird smells, Ducournau said. I wanted to give the impression of something that stinks a bit.
The heat and dank stickiness that pervades these rooms gives them a living, breathing quality that adds to the animalism of their inhabitants. But Ducournau wanted to somehow get her characters bodies to look less human, too. I wanted them to be like animals, on their all-fours, all the time, on their knees. So I asked the art director to put everything close to the ground.
The dorm beds are mattresses; the chairs are barely cushions; the desks are low and, if a character needs something, it will be at the bottom of the closet. The actors slouch and slump their shoulders, grasping at furniture to propel themselves through rooms; whole scenes play out on the floor.
Julia Ducournau: I wanted to give the impression of something that stinks a bit.
Without me even saying a word to them, this seemed to give them a more animal-like posture, she said. It also meant they needed lots of carpeting on set. If theyre always on their knees, there has to be a reason why and the reason is because its cosy, its possible. Otherwise I think nobody would believe it.
When we finished shooting, she was in tears
Raw is the third film Ducournau has worked on with Marillier, after the directors short film, Junior, and her TV movie, Mange. We are very, very close to each other in real life. We have a strong bond. We trust each other very much, the director said. It allows us to push the boundaries further and further.
Marilliers character Justine morphs through the movie from virgin vegetarian to well, its a cannibal film. She is just so different between the beginning and the end and obviously we couldnt shoot in chronological order, Im not that famous, Ducournau laughed. It meant Marillier had to switch between characters in a day, sometimes from one shot to another. That was a big challenge for her
Another challenge was the physicality of the role. As the tension reaches its peak, Justine is shot tight and close in bed under a sheet, writhing and thrashing and scratching her skin as she physically fights her urges.
I described it to her as alike [to] when junkies try to come clean; I showed her what I wanted to see a lot of like Trainspotting and stuff. And when we finished shooting that scene, she was really in tears … it was too intense somehow.
It didnt help that crew members had been prodding and poking the actor through the sheet. I wanted to create this sense that the body is super tensed and is expecting something to come and hit her, she said. She was really proud to have done this, afterwards; she was really, really relieved in a way, and very proud.

Prosthetics are way more fun
For all the talk of the fainting, only a few scenes in the film show the horror of cannibalism up close and, where she could, Ducournau kept clear of digital effects. I like prosthetics, I think theyre way more fun what you get on screen is way more vivid and organic and gross, she said. Its also really great when you bring prosthetics to a set its like everyone is back in summer camp, everyone wants to touch it, wants to taste it, maybe you put some blood on your face. Its good for the spirit [of the set].
The cannibalism scene audiences have been reacting to most is not particularly gratuitous in fact it involves something as small, and as common, as a finger. I could have chosen way worse than a finger, right? I could have made it, like, tripes, brain, buttocks, something big and fat, you know? But I did not, Ducournau said.
Fingers are, in a horrible way, bite-sized and we spend so much time with them near our mouths. Thats why it worked. We all know that there are two things in a finger: there is a bone, and there is a nail. And we know that if we take off the very small amount of skin that there is on it, you get right to the bone.
When she eats it, you actually dont see that much, because its hidden between her own fingers, Ducournau said. That was part of the plan too. There were some things I had to show, and some I had to leave to my audiences imagination.
Raw is showing in select Australian cinemas from 20 April

When she eats it, you actually dont see that much, because its hidden between her own fingers, Ducournau said. That was part of the plan too. There were some things I had to show, and some I had to leave to my audiences imagination.

Raw director Julia Ducournau on how to make a horror film as creepy as possible
The brains behind the French cannibal film that overwhelmed Toronto audiences shares her tricks for creating menacing, hair-raising body horror

We all know that there are two things in a finger: there is a bone, and there is a nail. And we know that if we take off the very small amount of skin that there is on it, you get right to the bone.
