first semester: grades + some thoughts
hi friends! so, I just finished my first semester of college (aka university to those of you not in the US). after a week of finals and lots of stress, I’m now at home, safely ensconced in the couch doing as little as possible. however, final grades were due today, so I thought I’d take a moment to run through what my grades were and kind of reflect on them. I wanted to do this both bc I thought it could give people a better idea of the transition b/t high school and college grades-wise, and also as a record for myself.
a note/disclaimer:
if you don’t want to know what my grades were, you don’t have to read this! I’m not trying to brag and I don’t want this to be something to compare yourself to! everyone is on their own path and has their own definition of success -- a bad grade for me might be a great one for you, and vise versa.
also, this will probably get pretty long. grab a snack.
some background about grades in the US
grades are given on a scale from A to F, with A being the best and F being a fail (we skip E tho idk why). grades are based on a combo of exams, quizzes, assignments, and essays, with the specific percentage/which of these counts determined by the professor. this varies from school to school or even from class to class but generally the scale is
A: >93.3%
A-: 90-93.3%
B+: 86.7-89.9%
B: 83.4-86.6%
B-: 80-83.3%
ok I’m tired of typing things out but you get the point. this pattern continues in the 70s for C and the 60s for D. usually anything below a 60 is an F (fail) but again this can depend. some classes are graded on a curve, where the grade boundaries are moved either up or down so that the majority of students get a B-/C+, which is supposed to be the average. this prevents grade inflation and also helps you out if the class is very difficult and test averages are in the 50s or 60s (pretty common for classes like organic chemistry).
some background about my grades in high school
I feel like this info is important for context and also to give an idea of the academic level I generally operate at (okay that sounds v pretentious). anyway, it’s pretty generally expected that you can expect to see a drop in your grades from high school to college. this differs based on a ton of things, but almost everyone experiences it so it’s totally normal and to be expected! anyway, I went to a fairly competitive and well-ranked public (government funded) high school, and I grew up in a well-educated university town, so I felt I was pretty prepared for college. I took mostly AP/honors courses and ended with a 3.95 GPA (unweighted) when I graduated. basically, I was almost a straight A student with a few Bs in there (thanks to pre-calc and AP Spanish).
I’m now at a fairly selective school, though not anything close to the Ivy League -- I think the acceptance rate for my class was 17-18%. of course, selectivity is not a great indicator of how difficult classes are, as many selective schools (particularly Ivy Leagues) have rampant grade inflation.
my majors are neuroscience and dance and I’m on a pre-med track.
anyway, let’s get down to the nitty gritty: my grades this semester.
early modern England (3 credit hours): A-
I took this course because I placed out of introductory writing but still needed a writing-intensive course and it seemed interesting enough. honestly, it was much more difficult than I expected. I consider myself a fairly good writer, but the professor I had for this course was a tough grader for papers. I did manage to get an A on my final paper which was a victory. after easily getting all As in writing and history classes in high school, an A- is a little hard to accept. however, I worked really hard in this class and am honestly satisfied with my grade as I know most people do not do as well in this class. it was also a 2000 (sophomore level) class, so I was definitely being challenged.
intensive ballet IV (3 credit hours): B+
so, this is my lowest grade. at first, I was really disappointed by it, but it is a 4000 level course (mostly juniors and seniors) and we’re graded based partially on skill, so I have to accept it and move on and just hope to do better next semester as I’m taking ballet IV again. I know I could have worked harder in this class so I’m not going to complain about it, just learn from it and try to improve.
intro to cell & molecular biology (3 credit hours): A
this is probably what I’m proudest of. this class is known for being a true weed-out course for pre-meds and most people just hope to pass, but I got an A! it feels especially good because I know I worked hard for it and didn’t just skate by on natural intelligence. I also hadn’t taken biology since freshman year of high school so there was a steep learning curve. I didn’t just do well, I honestly learned so much and doing well in this class confirmed for me that pre-med is the right choice.
general chemistry I - lecture (3 credit hours): A-
I have such a complicated relationship with chemistry, and honestly, I’m really glad I’m done with this class. I hate to blame professors but sometimes you just get a really bad one and this was one of those cases. his lectures were extremely disorganized and he didn’t explain things clearly at all. it’s partially my fault that I didn’t get an A, though, as I definitely could have put more time and thought into studying, especially for the final. it was just so hard to stay motivated when I could barely follow lectures. I have to take gen chem II next semester but thank god I have a different professor.
general chemistry I - lab (1 credit hour): A
not much to say about this one. I’m happy to have gotten an A since it really intimidated me at first -- lab in college is way more serious than in high school. I learned how to write a proper lab report which is an important skill as a science major.
honors colloquium (1.5 credit hours): A
I loved this class soooo freaking much. everyone in the honors program has to take a first year seminar and I chose one about modernism and if it’s still relevant to the contemporary world. it was also a discussion based class which I love and I got to write my final paper on literally any topic I wanted and how it was related to modernism (mine was about the modernist search for identity in The Handmaid’s Tale, and I’m so proud of that paper, especially considering I wrote it the day it was due). anyway, not a super hard class, but still proud of that A.
urban sociology (3 credit hours): A
another class which I loved. I found it kind of easy as it was mostly memorization of concepts and theorists and I have a good memory, but I did put more effort in than I would have to an “easy” class in high school, and was rewarded by getting 100% on the final! would highly recommend sociology to literally anyone -- I’m taking another sociology class next semester and am considering a minor in it.
dance company (1 credit hour): A
this is like, not a real grade because dance company isn’t even a real class -- it’s just on my schedule so I can get credit for performing in the fall dance show. I’m pretty sure everyone who shows up to rehearsals and performances gets an A. regardless, I’m happy for the boost to my GPA.
so that’s it! overall, I ended with a 3.7925 GPA. I have to confess that it is slightly lower than I would have liked, but I’m overall happy with my efforts considering this was my first semester of college. my class load next semester is a little bit lighter, both in terms of credits and in terms of difficulty of classes, so that will hopefully make things a little more manageable. I have to have a 3.6 by the end of this year and a 3.8 by the end of sophomore year to stay in the honors program, and considering I’m almost at a 3.8 now I think it’s completely doable.
I hope this was useful to those of you who are starting college soon. obviously this differs from school to school and especially if you’re not in the US, but in general you can expect a slight dip in your grades. it shouldn’t be anything dramatic if you can keep organized and on top of things, but there are a lot of transitions associated with starting college so don’t feel badly if things don’t go according to plan! you have time to make up for it, and med schools/law schools/grad schools know that grades your first semester of freshman year are not necessarily fully reflective of your abilities and will likely pay more attention to your grades later on.
thanks for reading this whole rambling thing! also, I might make a separate post about differences in grades between high school and college (how things are weighted, harshness of grading, etc.) so let me know if you’d find that helpful!

Kalki Subramaniam: If I don’t tell Indian transgender community’s stories, who will?
Written by Kalki Subramaniam
Kalki Subramaniam is a transgender rights activist, artist and founder of the Sahodari Foundation. The opinions in this article belong to the author.
I remember my childhood so vividly. Until the age of 11, I was a playful, happy child at home, and a good student at school.
Growing up in rural India, I was considered the more privileged child among my two sisters, having been born male. Yet, deep inside, I longed to be my true self.
I was a naturally effeminate child. I felt uncomfortable being addressed as “he,” and it seemed like there was this girl inside who liked everything a little girl of my age liked. This made me a constant target. But I didn’t fear those big, bullying boys and would fight back, never ashamed of who I was.
Then, at the age of 14, I gave up. After I started losing interest in school, certain teachers became aggressive and would punish me with a cane. I could never tell my parents. Amid painful episodes of shame and self-doubt, I considered ending my own life, though my family’s love stopped me from doing so.
I cut class and would go to parks and forests to get away from everyone. Under the trees, I wrote poetry and imagined my future life in drawings, which helped me heal my inner wounds.

When I finally came out as transgender to my parents, I was taken to a psychiatrist to help with my gender dysphoria, or the distress caused by the discrepancy between a person’s body and their gender identity. He asked me to draw how I saw myself in the future, so I drew a beautiful girl with a long skirt, hat and a big smile. He was taken aback, but he eventually helped me gain my family’s acceptance.
This is the dilemma faced by teen children with gender dysphoria. Unable to bear the bullying but terrified of disappointing their parents, they fear going to school and they fear dropping out, too. If they “out” themselves, only a few are accepted by their parents.
“The deepest wounds cannot heal until they are expressed. Practicing art helps us heal emotional injuries, by providing a safe opportunity for self-expression and shaping one’s identity.”
Kalki Subramaniam
When our families reject us, we find solace and refuge with other “hijras” who are also struggling to survive. In my lifetime, I have lost many transgender friends to suicide. Other friends died from AIDS.
As a teenager, I witnessed — and was the victim of — harassment. A transgender friend of mine, who was a sex worker, was raped by seven men. Another friend was chased by her own brother wanting to burn her. While another friend was driven out by her family. These childhood experiences built my raging desire for justice and inspired me to become an activist for the transgender community.
Healing through art
After completing my master’s degree in journalism, I started a magazine called Sahodari (or “sister”) to reach out to and support the transgender community. I used photographs, art and text to educate people about mental health, transitioning and their right to dignity.
Within a few years, I had founded the Sahodari Foundation and trained our team in visual storytelling.

Art has helped me identify my self-worth. It has been a medium for me to express my hope, joy, fear, anguish, desires and struggles. It is a reflection of my deep self that mirrors my journeys. It is a divine experience. When I paint, it is like my blood flows into the canvas and there is a soul connection. My artworks “The Purple Princess” and “I with in” celebrate the pure feminine and androgynous expressions with bright fluorescent colors. More recently, I have started to incorporate augmented reality into my artworks — a technology that will help provide another level of meaning and emotional engagement with audiences.
Many people in the community are artistic and creative, but they seldom have the opportunity to practice their art. I realized that our community could not only express themselves through art, they could make a living from it. That is how our Transhearts project was born. I traveled with my team to several cities and small towns in south India to offer free workshops on expressive painting. It has been a therapeutic experience for the participants. When they are making art, they forget time.

We have exhibited the community’s artworks in galleries, universities, colleges and public spaces. The reception had been tremendously positive. When people see the artwork they can identify and empathize with us.
Each piece of art tells a story. Abinaya’s “The Struggling Sex Worker” was a moving work, very raw in portraying the exploitation of trans bodies. Viji D’s “Begging Cycle” expresses the anguish of asking for money from strangers in trains to meet her basic needs. Nayanthara’s “Finding Oneself” is beautiful, spiritual and powerful.

The deepest wounds cannot heal until they are expressed. Practicing art helps us heal emotional injuries, by providing a safe opportunity for self-expression and shaping one’s identity. It can bring out our beautiful side. It can make us more tolerant of differences — and of one another.
Standing up against violence
Sexual violence is a terrible, horrible, health-affecting issue that transgender people have endured for decades. Research from the Indian states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka found that four in 10 transgender people will experience some form of sexual abuse before the age of 18. Many of us remain silent victims.
The Red Wall Project was created to empower the voices of India’s transgender and gender-diverse people, and to help resist the crimes perpetrated against us. It is a community “art-ivism” project whereby participants are interviewed by my team and write down their experiences of assault, abuse or rape on paper marked with their palm prints in red paint.
Listening to the experiences can be traumatizing, yet we are determined to do it. If we don’t tell our community’s stories, who will?
With their consent, we bring these stories to the public. During the exhibitions, I use my poetry and performance art to provoke dialogue about taking action against gender-based crimes.

The testimonials have been exhibited at the British council in Chennai, the Alliance Française in Trivandrum and various other educational and cultural institutions across India.
We want to reach out to India’s young people with our stories, and tell them that it is unacceptable to hurt people based on their gender identity. Through victims’ first-hand accounts, we can show them that we are human beings who deserve better treatment, respect and dignity.
Whenever we exhibit these testimonials, I see people reading them patiently for hours. I have seen visitors who, after reading, sit in silence in tears. Young people come to me and say, “What can I do to stop this violence? How can I be supportive?” And I tell them: “Educate yourself more, sensitize your family and your friends to be trans-friendly. Empathize with us. That is all we need.”
Struggle for recognition
For decades, our community has struggled for acceptance and equality. In 2014, hard-fought battles led to a milestone victory when India’s Supreme Court finally recognized transgender people as a “third gender.” It was a move I had long lobbied the judiciary for, and the legal recognition meant, for instance, that people could enroll at academic institutions, as openly transgender, without fear.
“The rainbow is shining bright and beautiful. I see hope.”
Kalki Subramaniam
Many corporations have started to hire transgender employees. Years of activism and awareness-building have resulted in many other welcome changes, including the positive portrayals of transgender people in mainstream media and films. In January 2020, the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act came into effect, providing further legal protections of our rights and welfare.
Students read Red Wall testimonials. Kalki sees the red painted palms signifying “a slap against abusers and a sign of resistance.” Exhibited together, she says the palms are a unified and powerful statement from victims seeking justice for the crimes committed against them. Credit: Sahodari Foundation
There is still much work to be done. We are still fighting for affirmative action to ensure jobs and places at educational institutions. We want protection against stigma and discrimination, and legal guarantees that the punishments for crimes against transgender people will be severe.
But the rainbow is shining bright and beautiful. I see hope. I see a better future for our generation of queer Indians. I see India as a place that can uphold LGBTQI rights in the world. And I see India as a pioneer of transgender rights in the future.

God is in Pursuit of My Heart
This post by Ken Ngai, who took the opportunity to reflect on his transition from high school to college, something he hadn’t had much time to reflect upon ever since COVID -19 hit the nation and everyone’s lives were thrown into chaos. So sit back, get some snacks and drinks, and enjoy his ramble. It’s long.
Going into freshman year, I wasn’t on the best of terms with God. To be more specific, I really hadn’t tended to my relationship with God. In general, I would sum up my senior year as a turbulent time characterized by apathy, bitterness, and neglect towards God. Of course, I rarely opened up to anyone about what I was experiencing, partly because I was too ashamed and partly because I didn’t really care. When I say I was ashamed, I mean that I was afraid of being seen as a fake Christian. Throughout my life, especially in high school, I built myself up as an individual seemingly dedicated to God 100%. I did all the right things that one would do like consistently attend CBCGL, become a LYTE team member, find a mentor, etc. I have to admit, there were definitely stretches of times that I really felt close to God, particularly sophomore to junior year in high school. Nevertheless, I look back at my time in high school and I see that my faith was a mile wide but an inch deep. I was too busy doing things for God that I missed the times actually dwelling with God. As such, my times alone with God rarely struck me as “life-changing”, “peace-giving”, or “reassuring” as many promised to me. Sure, I picked up a few things here or there, learned to become a better Christian by title and was proud to do so. In fact, I distinctly remember how happy I was when some of my high school peers explicitly noted aloud that “Ken is Christian, he wouldn’t do __________”. I assure you, I was happy living my life like this because during this time of my life, I wasn’t aware of the lie I was living. They say “ignorance is bliss”, and for me this was definitely the case. No matter how academically advanced and mature I thought myself to be, my spiritual life itself was beyond my comprehension. Therefore, you can understand why I began to stumble when senior year came around and I started noticing the holes in my faith. For once, I was becoming conscious of how distant I actually was from God. The more I reflected, the more I realized that I treated my faith as some object detached from my life. Quickly, I realized that the foundation of my faith was sinking sand, and soon everything else I was accustomed to came crashing down. Daily devos, worship, prayer, everything started to fade away from my life as if it was never there to begin with. On the outside, senior Ken was no different. By the account of the world, I was doing better than ever. Grades were fine, relationships were fine, emotions were fine, everything seemed fine. Everything WAS fine because they were always fine, whether or not I happened to squeeze 30 minutes of prayer between it all. Herein lies a reality that was hard for me to swallow: I never did rely on God for anything in my life and treated him as an obligation of my faith rather than the source of my life. I thought that if this “god idea” could be satisfied by my small offerings that I gave hesitantly and without thought, I could run away with blessings. Yet, all (capital g) God really wanted was heart, which I never once considered to offer.
Senior Ken also didn’t care to share all of this. I signed up for LYTE team again because that’s what I did for the past 2 years. I continued going to church because that’s what I did for my whole life. I made it clear to the world that I was the same “Christian Ken” as ever because that’s what mattered to me. I didn’t care for anything else. In the back of my mind, I justified myself saying, “even if I don’t feel like a Christian on the inside, God can still use my actions for His will”. And thus I began senior year with this sentiment, again caught up with the same old cycle of doing things for God instead of dwelling with God. To be clear, I’m positive God used me for good ( “You take what the enemy meant for evil/ And You turn it for good”) even when I didn’t feel a fire for God, for the Church, or for my brothers and sisters.
To this end, I want to write a confession and a request for forgiveness to those that I may have hurt, may have neglected, or may have deceived during this time. Psalm 139:24 sings, “See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting”. God really struggled with me when I began reflecting upon my senior year, and He showed me the offensive ways that were within me and how there has always been a better way, a way everlasting.
This conveniently leads to me arriving on campus at the University of Michigan. After surviving a turbulent time as a senior and a summer that quickly came to an end, I was promptly placed on the bottom of the academic totem pole once again. To be honest, I wasn’t really sure I wanted to stay Christian in college. After all that time of faking it, I wasn’t sure I was going to make it. I was just tired, tired of trying so hard, tired of keeping a reputation, and tired of failing again and again. I resigned myself to the fact that if I was going to keep sinning, I could at least drop the act. But God had different plans; He wasn’t going to give me up so easily.
One after the other, opportunities came up for me to join a fellowship and a church. Whether it was Will and Anthony bringing me around, going church hopping with some friends, or attending the welcome events of various on-campus fellowships, the beginning of my freshman year was quite busy with other Christians. Soon, I fell in love with the people of Harvest Mission Community Church of Ann Arbor. It was refreshing to not have the burden of serving and the burden of doing. I simply showed up one night to a small-group gathering and the leaders accepted me with open arms and a warm smile. All around me were brothers and sisters dedicated to living life on life with other believers. I was overwhelmed by how hospitable they were from the get-go. But God didn’t merely use this as an opportunity to fill my social needs, but He also made it clear that this was a time of refocusing and restructuring of my faith...bottom up.
The first thing God taught me was that He places specific people in my life to remind me that He is still faithfully working in my life. God placed older brothers and sisters that were unashamed of their past, their sins, and their shortcomings. For some of them, it was their years in undergrads. For others, it was only a year before. Nevertheless, they just poured out their lives to me, and by the end of it, I was enamored by how faithful they had stayed with God, and how faithful God had stayed with them.
Constant encounters with God’s faithful eventually struck me deep in the heart. I couldn’t help but begin to feel curious about who exactly God was and how God could work in such great ways. This curiosity was a first for me and marked a time in which I had to rediscover my faith.
A popular saying in my church is that, “You have to rediscover your faith in every new life stage”. For me, I rediscovered my faith through the Word. I realized that in the past, it was rare for the words of the Bible to actually mean anything to my life. Nothing really struck me deep, nor did the Word change how I viewed my life. For me, it was like reading a textbook for an exam and to be forgotten by next semester. Yet, when I picked up the Word again after a few-month hiatus, I started to pick up different things from the same words. I’m confident that God, in restoring my soul and my life, also gave me a new set of eyes because words began to jump out and invade my life like never before. For example, the first chapter of James held me speechless. Trials in life don’t merely happen to you. They are actually the building blocks to our faith, and when we have remained steadfast under trial, we are left more complete and satisfied in God than ever before. How wonderful it is to know that not only is God guiding us through tumultuous times, but in fact there is an end-goal. The second thing I learned is that God is purposeful, a master in His craft, and truly all-knowing. God, in control of all things, all the waves of the storm, is also meticulously in control of my life amidst the storms.
“God the Father” is a common saying in the Christian community. For me, I never understood what it meant for God to be my Father. It has always been hard for me to picture God, the creator of the universe and all that dwells in it, is also my very own father. But through the Word, I was finally catching on to what “God the Father” meant. Going back to my newfound curiosity for the Word and for God himself, I came to understand that the Word was providing a sense of assurance that I never knew existed before. The Word wasn’t just a sacred text outlining religious doctrines, but more importantly it is the way God communicates His love for us, both on a humanity scale as well as a personal level. The last part in particular resonated with me when I came into the presence of God in complete desperation. I just came back onto campus from winter break, and our church started a two week period of fasting. In the process of abstaining from meats, God met me through the Word and showed me that He is a good Father by providing, not food, but spiritual nourishment. During the time of fasting, I was feeling, in general, very fatigued and without motivation. In Michigan, it was getting colder and darker every day, and my mood was downtrodden to say the least. But in my weakest moment, God the Father came to give me a pick-me-up, and led me in deep prayer and devotional time, which established a long-running routine of daily reflection that lasted the whole semester. God the Father was both disciplining and maturing me through a time of fasting and repentance, but He also couldn’t help himself from embracing me through Biblical breakthroughs. The third thing I learned was that God is my heavenly Father.
Here’s a quick recap: I learned that God places people in my life to remind me of His work, that God is in control of my life because He has not brought me this far to abandon me, and finally that He is a good Father for doing so. These three points combine to ultimately culminate to my mission’s experience. Feel free to read my Final Support Letter Update (it’s in the Empower Facebook, you just gotta scroll down). In that letter, I talked about God shattering my heart into pieces because God needed to restructure my heart for His people, His broken people. This sentiment has stayed strong coming out of missions. Truly, I am the clay and God is the potter. He forms me according to His will and when I get too dry and brittle, about to break under the weight of this world, God nourishes me, satisfies me with the everlasting water, and keeps working with me to form me into His beautiful creation. In the same way, God is in pursuit of my heart. God knew that my heart was stretched all over the place for things of the world. In His infinite wisdom, He knew that the only way for me to continue dwelling with Him is to break my heart into pieces, refine it, and shape it again. “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:2-4). My heart had holes, scars, wounds keeping me from loving Him, the Church, other people, and even myself. Apathy, bitterness, and neglect were just the product of my ruined heart. But God wants my heart to be complete, lacking in nothing. God chose to pursue my heart, and in the process mended it.
This was all said not to show that it’s all rainbows and sunshine since my semester ended. In fact, with the quarantine situation and all, it’s been harder than ever to be motivated for God and His word. But, the beauty of God and His relentless nature is that He continues to pursue me when I don’t feel like pursuing Him. He meets me where I am at, more than halfway and beckons for me. I’ve gone through the trial of my senior year, and I now know that I can go through it again, this time holding fast to the God that is in pursuit of my heart.

10 Alternative Career Options for Lawyers
Anyone who has been practicing law for a long time or is thinking about starting a legal career has likely heard the famous phrase, “You can do anything with a law degree”. Most lawyers know the extended version of that phrase, “You can do anything a law degree, as long as it’s practicing law.”
Jokes aside, lawyers have career options outside of practicing at a law firm, in-house or at their own law practice if they’re willing to pursue alternative legal careers. Law students and lawyers develop many transferable skills that are applicable in non-legal jobs. If your goal is to increase your income, it’s worth considering whether a new career may be the right path.
Here are some alternative career options for lawyers.
10 Alternative Careers For Lawyers
These are careers in which a lawyer can either directly or indirectly make use of their acquired legal skill set and professional legal experience. Some are appropriate if you want to leave law entirely.
At the end oo the post, I’ve included a bunch of resources for lawyers looking for alternative careers.
1. Freelance or Contract Attorney
Going the freelance or contract lawyer route is an easy transition for those who aren’t ready to make the jump yet, or for those who simply want to be their own boss when it comes to choosing the clients that they want to work with. Most attorneys feel unhappy while working because of the pressure and workload – if you still want to remain in the legal practice, then going the freelance route is the best bet.
Many firms hire freelance or contract lawyers if there is a temporary increase in work or on a project-to-project basis. This gives you the flexibility to pick and choose your rates and hours.
2. Real Estate Broker
The real estate world can be a highly lucrative one for people with a law background. Whether it is interpersonal skills, negotiations or drafting and analyzing a contract, the skills of a lawyer come extremely handy as a real estate broker.
All you need is a license and you’re all set to begin the next step in your career. The requirements of obtaining a license differ from state to state, but are generally easy to come by for a lawyer.
Lawyers also have great project management skills which are transferable to organizing and running real estate transactions. If you’re looking to ditch billable hours for a chance to manage deals in the most efficient manner possible, real estate may be appealing to you.
3. Investment Banking / Private Equity
If you’re someone who enjoys a high pressure and competitive working environment, then you might want to consider moving into investment banking or private equity. The lucrative earnings and highly incentivized reward-based system of investment banking draws many lawyers who wants to be on the “business” side of transactions.
Depending on your educational background, many firms will hire lawyers as junior analysts and trust them to learn the ropes in lieu of a finance degree. You may also want to work with a recruiter in your job search to help you find banks or private equity firms most receptive to hiring a former lawyer transition into a business role.
Typically, you’re going to have the best luck in this route if you’re already working in Biglaw in New York or San Francisco and have some experience working with private equity or investment banking clients (in fact, your LinkedIn contacts might be a great place to start searching for a job).
4. HR and Recruitment
The Human Resources and recruitment industry is constantly on the lookout for highly skilled and smart individuals. As a lawyer, you’ll be bringing your people skills, organizational skills, assessment skills and if you happen to have a relatively high EQ, you’ll fit right in.
If you don’t want to steer far away from the legal world, you can opt for legal recruiting as well. Companies often require people with a considerable amount of experience in the legal world for their recruitment needs. This specialization can command high salaries, especially depending on the size of your network. Many law school graduates are well positioned to leverage networks (like you have on LinkedIn) to create a rewarding career as a recruiter.
If being a legal recruiter isn’t your dream, you still might enjoy working in Human Resources where you can utilize interpersonal and public relations skills in furtherance of your company’s hiring goals.
5. Writer/Journalist
As the world becomes more and more oversaturated with tweets, social media posts and online content, there is a rising demand for long-form and technical writing. Lawyers who can understand complex events and jargon and distill it down for broader consumption will likely find an audience.
This isn’t much different from what you currently do for clients, taking the complex world of litigation or deals and efficiently explaining it and answering their questions. Most law jobs involve taking the complex and translating it into the simple, so it should be no surprise that writing or journalism would be a viable alternative career for a lawyer.
6. Project Management
The role of a project manager is to accomplish the objective of a project by strategizing, planning and organizing. They wear multiple hats to see that the project is completed from the start to end in a successful manner. This is where basic management skills, problem-solving abilities, and organizational skills of a lawyer comes in handy.
If you’re someone who likes to be in-charge and has the ability to work across industries and generally has the skills to get something from point A to point B, this role is for you.
7. Content Writer
A content writer or a copywriter is someone who writes useful material for an organization. This can be long-form or short-form content. While this is not the most senior position, if you are a young lawyer with an interest in writing, this is a viable career option.
Your typical day would be writing various marketing materials like emails, blogs, newsletters, etc. With the rise of many online agencies and marketing agencies, the role of a content writer is unlikely to go away anytime soon and offers a very flexible, often remote lifestyle.
There are also plenty of legal organizations that need content writers who understand legal issues (e.g. bar associations, legal service providers, etc.).
8. Business Development Manager
A business development manager is someone who drives sales in an organization. They’re responsible for getting new clients onboard and managing existing ones. This client-facing role requires strong communication and interpersonal skills.
As a lawyer, you can put your skills to use while preparing and making pitches to potential clients. You have to be highly personable with a likeable personality with a penchant for sales techniques to make it as a business development manager.
9. Account Manager
Just like a project manager, an account manager also requires strong management and interpersonal skills. You need to be level-headed and should have the ability to manage and maintain existing client relations. An account manager acts as a bridge between the client and the company.
It’s a highly dynamic role that requires people management skills and a high ability to solve problems. The role is found en masse in virtually any industry, and can be a very fruitful career option for lawyers.
10. Teaching and Academia
Are you someone that loves law but not the business aspect of it? If so, then going the academic route is a great option. You’ll likely need a masters’ degree to be able to teach law, but beyond that, practical experience is the great differentiator.
Teaching law can be a highly rewarding and fulfilling experience for many who love the nitty-gritty of law and are keen on passing down their knowledge to the next generation of lawyers.
Career Resources For Lawyers
If you need additional help regarding making the big leap from law to another career, you might consider seeking help from a career center (e.g. from your law school or the ABA) or by working with a career coach that specializes in lawyers.
Here are some additional resources worth consulting:
The Unhappy Lawyer: A Roadmap to Finding Meaningful Work Outside of the Law, by Monica Parker (2008), “This book helps you ask and answer the hard questions about what you really want from your work and life and will help you successfully pursue your career goals.”

Attack in Iran raises spectre of a potentially far larger conflagration
A podcast version of this article is available at https://soundcloud.com/user-153425019/attack-in-iran-raises-spectre-of-a-potentially-far-larger-conflagration
By James M. Dorsey
An attack on a military parade in the southern Iranian city of Ahwaz is likely to prompt Iranian retaliation against opposition groups at home and abroad. It also deepens Iranian fears that the United States. Saudi Arabia and others may seek to destabilize the country by instigating unrest among its ethnic minorities.
With competing claims of responsibility by the Islamic State and the Ahvaz National Resistance for the attack that killed 29 people and wounded 70 others in the oil-rich province of Khuzestan, which borders on Iraq and is home to Iran’s ethnic Arab community, it is hard to determine with certainty the affiliation of the four perpetrators, all of whom were killed in the incident.
Statements by Iranian officials, however, accusing the United States and its allies, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Israel, suggest that they see the Ahvaz group rather than the Islamic State as responsible for the incident, the worst since the Islamic State attacked the Iranian parliament and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in Tehran in 2017.
Iran’s summoning, in the wake of the attack, of the ambassadors of Britain, the Netherlands and Denmark, countries from which Iranian opposition groups operate, comes at an awkward moment for Tehran.
It complicates Iranian efforts to ensure that European measures effectively neutralize potentially crippling US sanctions that are being imposed as a result of the US withdrawal in May from the 2015 international agreement that curbed the Islamic republic’s nuclear program.
Ahvaz-related violence last year spilled on to the street of The Hague when unidentified gunmen killed Ahwazi activist Ahmad Mola Nissi. Mr. Nissi was shot dead days before he was scheduled to launch a Saudi-funded television station staffed with Saudi-trained personnel that would target Khuzestan, according to Ahvazi activists.
This week, a group of exile Iranian academics and political activists, led by The Hague-based social scientist Damon Golriz, announced the creation of a group that intends to campaign for a liberal democracy in Iran under the auspices of Reza Pahlavi, the son of the ousted Shah of Iran who lives in the United States.
While Iran appears to be targeting exile groups in the wake of the Ahvaz attack, Iran itself has witnessed in recent years stepped up activity by various insurgent groups amid indications of Saudi support, leading to repeated clashes and interception of Kurdish, Baloch and other ethnic insurgents.
Last month, Azeri and Iranian Arab protests erupted in soccer stadiums while the country’s Revolutionary Guards Corps reported clashes with Iraq-based Iranian Kurdish insurgents.
State-run television warned at the time in a primetime broadcast that foreign agents could turn legitimate protests stemming from domestic anger at the government’s mismanagement of the economy and corruption into “incendiary calls for regime change” by inciting violence that would provoke a crackdown by security forces and give the United States fodder to tackle Iran.
The People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran or Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MeK), a controversial exiled opposition group that enjoys the support of serving and former Western officials, including some in the Trump administration, as well as prominent Saudis such as Prince Turki al-Faisal, a former Saudi intelligence chief, who is believed to be close to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has taken credit for a number of the protests in Khuzestan.
The incidents fit an emerging pattern, prompting suggestions that if a Gulf-backed group was responsible for this weekend’s attack, it may have been designed to provoke a more direct confrontation between Iran and the United States.
“If the terrorist attack in Ahvaz was part of a larger Saudi and UAE escalation in Iran, their goal is likely to goad Iran to retaliate and then use Tehran’s reaction to spark a larger war and force the US to enter since Riyadh and Abu Dhabi likely cannot take on Iran militarily alone… If so, the terrorist attack is as much about trapping Iran into war as it is to trap the US into a war of choice,” said Trita Parsi of the National Iranian American Council.
Iran appears with its response to the Ahvaz attack to be saying that its fears of US and Saudi destabilization efforts are becoming reality. The Iranian view is not wholly unfounded.
Speaking in a private capacity on the same day as the attack in Ahvaz, US President Donald J. Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph Giuliani, declared that US. sanctions were causing economic pain that could lead to a “successful revolution” in Iran.
“I don’t know when we’re going to overthrow them. It could be in a few days, months, a couple of years. But it’s going to happen,” Mr. Giuliani told an audience gathered in New York for an Iran Uprising Summit organized by the Organization of Iranian-American Communities, a Washington-based group associated with the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq.
Mr. Giuliani is together with John Bolton, Mr. Trump’s national security advisor, a long-standing supporter of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq that calls for the violent overthrow of the Iranian regime.
Mr. Bolton, last year before assuming office, drafted at the request of Mr. Trump’s then strategic advisor, Steve Bannon, a plan that envisioned US support “for the democratic Iranian opposition,” “Kurdish national aspirations in Iran, Iraq and Syria,” and assistance for Iranian Arabs in Khuzestan and Baloch in the Pakistani province of Balochistan and Iran’s neighbouring Sistan and Balochistan province.
The Trump administration has officially shied away from formally endorsing the goal of toppling the regime in Tehran. Mr. Bolton, since becoming national security advisor, has insisted that US policy was to put "unprecedented pressure" on Iran to change its behaviour”, not its regime.
Messrs. Bolton and Giuliani’s inclination towards regime change is, however, shared by several US allies in the Middle East, and circumstantial evidence suggests that their views may be seeping into US policy moves without it being officially acknowledged.
Moreover, Saudi support for confrontation with Iran precedes Mr. Trump’s coming to office but has intensified since, in part as a result of King Salman’s ascendance to the Saudi throne in 2015 and the rise of his son, Prince Mohammed.
Already a decade ago, Saudi Arabia’s then King Abdullah urged the United States to “cut off the head of the snake” by launching military strikes to destroy Iran’s nuclear program.
Writing in 2012 in Asharq Al Awsat, a Saudi newspaper, Amal Al-Hazzani, an academic, asserted in an op-ed entitled “The oppressed Arab district of al-Ahwaz“ that Khuzestan “is an Arab territory... Its Arab residents have been facing continual repression ever since the Persian state assumed control of the region in 1925... It is imperative that the Arabs take up the al-Ahwaz cause, at least from the humanitarian perspective.”
More recently, Prince Mohammed vowed that “we won’t wait for the battle to be in Saudi Arabia. Instead, we will work so that the battle is for them in Iran.”
Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, a prominent UAE scholar, who is believed to be close to Emirati Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, played into Iranian assertions of Gulf involvement in this weekend’s attack by tweeting that it wasn’t a terrorist incident.
Mr. Abdulla suggested that “moving the battle to the Iranian side is a declared option” and that the number of such attacks “will increase during the next phase”.
A Saudi think tank, believed to be backed by Prince Mohammed last year called in a study for Saudi support for a low-level Baloch insurgency in Iran. Prince Mohammed vowed around the same time that “we will work so that the battle is for them in Iran, not in Saudi Arabia.”
Pakistani militants have claimed that Saudi Arabia has stepped up funding of militant madrassas or religious seminaries in Balochistan that allegedly serve as havens for anti-Iranian fighters.
The head of the US State Department’s Office of Iranian Affairs, Steven Fagin, met in Washington in June with Mustafa Hijri, head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI), before assuming his new post as counsel general in Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The KDPI has recently stepped up its attacks in Iranian Kurdistan, killing nine people weeks before Mr. Hijri’s meeting with Mr. Fagin. Other Kurdish groups have reported similar attacks. Several Iranian Kurdish groups are discussing ways to coordinate efforts to confront the Iranian regime.
Similarly, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) last year appointed a seasoned covert operations officer as head of its Iran operations.
Said Saudi Ambassador to the United States Prince Khalid bin Salman, Prince Mohammed’s brother: President “Trump makes clear that we will not approach Iran with the sort of appeasement policies that failed so miserably to halt Nazi Germany’s rise to power, or avert the costliest war ever waged.”

Why Practical Skills Will Matter More Than Your Degree In The New Economy
When Giancarlo Martinez applied a few years ago to be a web developer at Genome, a digital marketing firm in New York, he was confident that he had the ability. But he couldn’t help but wonder whether company recruiters would be able to recognize his chops—and even if they did, he worried that they still might not give him a chance.
The reason: Although he had gone to coding school, Martinez was largely self-taught—”Staying up until 6 a.m., Googling things, and just figuring it out.” Others angling to work at Genome, he presumed, “probably had master’s degrees in computer science.”
“I was very intimidated,” recalls Martinez, now 26.
But Genome was welcoming. “At the end of the day, it’s not the piece of paper on your wall,” says Stephanie Plumeri Ertz, who interviewed Martinez for the position. “It’s what you can turn out.”
To seal the deal, she gave Martinez a test, asking him to follow a set of technical specifications while designing a webpage featuring cupcakes. Martinez showed a solid command of the basics. He also added a few impressive flourishes, including an animation of a conveyer belt that churned out cupcakes heaped with frosting, which tumbled off the end of the assembly line and dropped into the mouth of a cute, if voracious, blue robot.
“The coding challenge became my golden ticket,” says Martinez, who was immediately brought on for $70,000 a year—a huge bump from the $40,000 or so he’d been scratching together through a string of less stable tech jobs and freelance gigs.
Among the big questions now confronting the U.S. labor market is this: How common will stories like Martinez’s become?
Given the passion with which some business and educational leaders talk about it, you might well imagine that we’re on the cusp of a major revolution.
Skills, Not Degrees
“Getting a job at today’s IBM does not always require a college degree,” the company’s CEO, Ginni Rometty, has asserted. “What matters most is relevant skills.” Jeff Weiner, the CEO of LinkedIn, has been pushing the same message at his company. And David Blake, cofounder of the learning platform Degreed, has put it like this: “It shouldn’t matter how you picked up your skills, just that you did.”
But others are decidedly cautious, noting that longstanding cultural norms and institutional inertia stand as powerful roadblocks to this new way of thinking. Some experts are particularly skeptical that a skills-oriented approach to learning and hiring can transcend the tech industry.
“We’re in the early innings of this transition,” says Mike Adams, cofounder and chief product officer of MissionU, which offers an educational alternative to a traditional degree by focusing on skill building and job placement. Indeed, he anticipates that it will take “decades to shift” to an environment in which capability trumps academic pedigree on a wide scale.
The situation is evolving—but “not fast enough,” adds Karan Chopra, executive vice president of Opportunity@Work, a social enterprise whose signature program, TechHire, has enabled thousands of Americans from underserved communities to access training and jobs. (Among them is Martinez, a native of the South Bronx, who was supported by the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline, a part of the TechHire network, to help pay for a six-month stint at Flatiron School so that he could polish his coding skills before auditioning at Genome.)
“It’s important to realize that this is a problem of collective action,” Chopra says. “Individual employers changing their hiring practices one at a time won’t work—or won’t work quickly enough. A critical mass of employers needs to shift behavior, signaling to the rest and influencing a change in the way the market operates today.”
To be clear, no one who is advocating for a skills-centered system is suggesting that learning isn’t essential. In fact, the idea is that ever more of us must engage in lifelong learning as automation and other technological advances render our skills obsolete. Having only a high school diploma is not sufficient to land and hold a job anymore.
The goal, then, is to make all kinds of courses readily available in physical classrooms and virtual settings alike, allowing folks to acquire know-how that’s useful in the real world and then demonstrate their prowess to employers.
Under this scenario, it is envisioned, many will still obtain four-year degrees. Many others will earn two-year degrees or technical certificates. Meanwhile, the continued emergence of even more affordable options—such as online badging regimes, which can signal when someone has completed an area of study and mastered a discrete skill—will enhance the job prospects of those currently being left behind.
A False Choice
“Making it skills versus credentials is a bit of a false choice,” says Beth Cobert, CEO of Skillful, an initiative of the Markle Foundation that, in partnership with Microsoft, is aiming to give educators a sharper picture of which skills are in demand in their region while helping businesses adopt skills-based hiring and training practices. “This is about changing mind-sets.”
The difficulty in doing so is that the vast majority of businesses and individuals are largely locked in their old ways.
Despite employers’ constant gripes that they can’t find enough qualified workers in a host of industries, many are screening out those who lack a bachelor’s degree—even though they could tackle the tasks at hand without one. “An increasing number of job seekers face being shut out of middle-skill, middle-class occupations” because of this phenomenon, Burning Glass Technologies, a provider of labor market analytics, warned this month. “This credential inflation . . . is affecting a wide range of jobs from executive assistants to construction supervisors.”
For many families—and the battery of institutions of higher education eager to win them over—there’s also little interest in reconceiving how to best prepare their kids for what lies ahead. “People still build their identity around being a four-year college graduate,” says MissionU’s Adams. “That has a pretty strong stranglehold on society,” even amid deep concern about swelling student loan debt.
Martinez felt that tug himself. His stepdad didn’t approve of him skipping college. And his mom, who is from the Dominican Republic, also had misgivings at first. “As an immigrant mother, she always expected me to have a degree,” he says.
Another issue is how hard it can be to exhibit one’s skills outside of tech. If a company is looking for a Python developer with a certain level of experience and competence, “it doesn’t matter whether you come from high school or come from a PhD” program, says Spencer Thompson, the founder of Sokanu, a career-matching platform. “If you can prove those things, that’s great.” But suppose someone wants to be a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning technician?
“How do you measure whether a person is a good HVAC installer?” Thompson asks. “What are the . . . atomic units of being an installer, and how do you actually measure whether somebody is good or bad at those things? That’s where the whole model just completely breaks down.”
The Skills Embedded In The Study Of Literature
Even tougher to see, perhaps, is how the liberal arts can fit in. But Cobert proposes that—beyond having considerable value in their own right—such subjects might be radically reconsidered to capture what employers find most meaningful. “When you take Victorian literature,” she says, “we do not break it down to show that you learned writing skills, you learned critical thinking, you learned how to respond to feedback.”
Others also are hopeful that new avenues for highlighting skills are starting to open up, not necessarily as a replacement for formal education but as a companion to it.
“I don’t think it’s about tech at all,” says Connie Yowell, the CEO of Collective Shift, a nonprofit whose platform, LRNG, teaches tangible skills to young people, gives digitals badges (sometimes called “microcredentials”) to track their achievements, and uses these markers to unlock academic credit, internships, and jobs. “This is the future of learning.”
Adams, of MissionU, is somewhere in between. He believes that tech is a sweet spot. That’s why the first two cohorts completing his program—about 50 people in all—are concentrating on learning data analytics and amassing a portfolio of work to share with potential employers.
Yet MissionU, unlike many tech boot camps, also teaches general business skills, in part through a self-paced project in which students research a topic and present the findings in Excel. This can offer concrete “evidence that you can solve problems” inside a company, Adams says—and, sure enough, employers have begun to regard this assignment as a good indicator of fundamental business proficiency. Because of it, Adams foresees some MissionU graduates finding their way into human resources and other functions, not just being data geeks.
As for Martinez, he has done well for himself. After leaving Genome, he went to work at Yashi, a video advertising company. Once again, he found a boss who admired his skills and didn’t care about his schooling. “It’s not about the path you’ve taken, but what you bring to the table,” says Dipak Shetty, who hired Martinez.
Recently, Martinez moved from New York to Austin, Texas, where he’s mulling what to do next. He may take another job in software. Or he may attempt to shift into a broader management role. For that, though, he acknowledges that he will be forced to finally get a university education, maybe even an MBA.
“If I were to pursue a business job,” he says, “I definitely need a degree to compete.”
After all, skills are everything. But for all too many employers, credentials remain the only thing.

Stations: Changing Your Life – Changing Your Career by Dr. Lynda Mubarak
The current global workforce has changed tremendously during the past decade and your workplace is part of that change. Labor trends, increased use of technology for goods and services, and the reduction of workers at all levels has generated a need to view employment and self-sufficiency in a new light. If you have children, they will need to be able to work in a 21st century work environment with a diverse workforce, which will entail jobs which are being developed as they enter elementary grades or high school. STATIONS is the quick resource guide that offers suggestions and time-proven strategies for parents and professionals who interact with children and young adult workers.
STATIONS is a collection of essays that provides food for thought as we make our way through the different situations, events, stages, circumstances and parental decisions that will ultimately affect personal lifestyles and career options.
STATIONS examines childhood academic and social skills, and addresses the challenging task of teaching children to be healthy and financially sound while preparing them to thrive and survive in a global workforce driven by cutting edge technology and ongoing competition.
STATIONS is concise, amusing, informative and frank in its discussion of life’s everyday circumstances, including social media and proactive workplace practices that affect all of us from childhood through adulthood.
Review from Amazon
“The aptly titled STATIONS is probably best appreciated as an extended Public Service Announcement on personal, social and professional fulfillment and wellness from the perspective of a visionary educator and citizen invested in the survival of present and future generations. The fact that the experience opens with a shout-out to grandmothers is creatively deliberate, as the persona compares her world with that of her grandchildren and mentees. But this grandmother is not a despairing, garment-rending fossil lamenting the passing of the good old days. Rather, she rejoices in the new social, cultural and technological realities that were unimaginable in her youth, exhorting millennials and older folk in transition to employ these new realities on the journey toward healthy self-realization.
In reading Stations, three sayings from my own childhood were reinforced: “An old man sitting down can see farther than a young man standing up” (African proverb); “The child is the father of the man” (Freud); And gladly would he teach, and gladly learn’ (Chaucer, describing the divinity student in The Canterbury Tales). And while each station on the narrative journey dispenses advice, it is never preachy or condescending. In fact, Mubarak, an experienced educator, skillfully combines personal narrative with a somewhat controlled stream of consciousness, revealing her own vulnerabilities and past mistakes along the way. The result is a light-hearted, easy-to-read exploration of the relationships between skills identification, education and training, fulfillment, project commitment, success, and personal and communal responsibility. The tone and structure of each chapter, or vignette, is designed to reach a generation where sound-bytes and images are the preferred mode of communication. Advice and encouragement are underscored by non-intrusive statistics, anecdotal accounts, imagined scenarios, and resource references.
As an educator in global languages and cultures, advisor and mentor, I recommend Stations to all students, parents, teachers, employers, and friends. School Guidance Counselors, and college Student Affairs and Career offices would do well to include this tome on their lists of recommended readings.” (Ezra S. Engling)
STATIONS EXCERPT
Are Your Kids Competing in STEM?
You spent too much money and time in Lost Wages, Nevada, purchased the latest versions of Kindle and the iPhone, and shared your summer vacation report with anyone who cared to listen to the back lot or front office at work. Now what? You have used up your bragging rights for the summer season. How about something new, exciting and educational for the kids?
Do you know that the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are begging for sharp young minds with fresh ideas and innovative thinking? Your child represents one of those young minds. You don’t need to be reminded that your children are highly intelligent. They can name every space-related cartoon character, identify their mutant friends or foes and describe the planets they inhabit. Do you notice how their eyes light up when an enemy craft is landing?
Their toy boxes are filled with action figures that represent long, hard battles and conquests. In other words, your children are already playing games containing futuristic models and know which channels to surf on Saturday morning to find the leaping, flying creatures!
So, instead of the usual Disney World, SeaWorld, Six Flags, or the expensive, tropical island family trip, consider enrolling your child in a NASA Summer Day Camp next year, and make it a family affair. This unique hands-on experience will put your child in touch with several categories of STEM and open another world for career investigation.
The online interactive activities will also teach them to appreciate the world of internet technology on a different level. At NASA your children can actually explore the many occupations connected with space exploration and meet the people behind the scenes who plan and execute the missions.
It’s also important for children to know that behind every highly visible occupation there are hundreds of people in the background who work very hard to make the overall project successful. Just think, after this trip your daughter (yes, daughter) might announce that she will be designing space suits for future astronauts instead of fashions for movie stars. Likewise, your son may decide to create the next generation of transformers or robots used for planet exploration or spaceship repair. It’s even possible that the little cook in your family may consider a career as a nutritionist for space travelers. Who knows? Your youngsters may even develop a new interest in astronomy.
When your coworker brags about his trip to the islands, smile and tell him about your five-year-old daughter’s NASA Camp Kennedy experience and her new aerospace vocabulary. If your coworker is still standing, tell him your sixth grade son loves basketball and soccer, but is also involved in the U.S. Army’s eCybermission competition. His team has a chance to win $5,000 in cash if the members can identify and resolve an issue in the community using the classic scientific method. Checkmate. Blast off!

Could you tell us something about STATIONS? STATIONS is my debut book. It is available on Kindle and also published in paperback at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. The book is composed of essays I have written over the years. Each essay covers a phase, decision, transition, pathway, or challenge that ordinary people experience during the course of a lifetime as children and later as adults.
STATIONS: Changing Your Life – Changing Your Career is my book of essays and my way of assisting you in making life decisions now that will affect your quality of life later. The 21st century is very fluid. You and your children are part of it!
If you are caught in the gridlock of making a transition in some area of your life, the first thing you need to consider is: whatever you need to do to reach maximum success in any category is located in two places; your head and your heart. But change also means there are some things you need to begin and some things that you will need to end, and involves both head and heart. Both areas are connected, very powerful, and one will eventually affect the other. STATIONS will guide you through some areas using common sense suggestions that you have heard from family, friends, associates or even a stranger.
What inspired you to sit down and actually start writing this book? I have always wanted to write a book, but only discussed it briefly (and quietly) with a few friends over the years. I assumed that my thoughts and ideas had been written and discussed many times over and there was no need to ‘repeat’ what others had done. I began to write down my observations and thoughts several years ago and decided to publish them after a chance meeting with a former colleague in a restaurant. She and I were teachers at the same middle school over twenty years ago. During those years, she told me weekly about her desire to write a children’s book. When I asked if she had accomplished her dream, she explained that she had published four books and that I should move forward and contact a publisher. I did, and the rest is history!
Introduce us to STATIONS FOR KIDS. STATIONS FOR KIDS is dedicated to early literacy and community service. The best way to ensure your child’s personal and career success is to begin the learning process as soon as possible. Academic success is always necessary, but your child also needs to see how he or she fits into the world community. A combination of community service and applicable educational concepts will give your child a balanced view of the world. CARVER PARK provides a view of a young girl’s early learning experiences about the world. SHORTY and THE SULLIVANS, CARVER PARK and STATIONS can be purchased at Melanin Origins, Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
How does your book STATIONS relate to kids and their care-givers? It relates to the various circumstances that families face when raising children from early social skills and financial responsibility, to proactive soft skills and behaviors required of students, new workers or tenured employees.
Are there any under-represented groups or ideas featured in your book, STATIONS? Yes. STATIONS addresses many issues and concerns of young parents, first generation college students, at-risk youth, adults in job transition, and ex-offenders in re-entry programs. Some persons have not been exposed to the nuances of a college campus, support group interaction, workplace protocol, or even networking practices. STATIONS attempts to cover these areas in a simple, but practical manner
How does your book relate to your present situation, education, spiritual practice or journey? I think my book is a condensed version of the positive and negative experiences of my life and the lives of persons I have encountered over the years. The topics I selected were the ones that had the most profound effect on me as a child, parent, educator, college adjunct, observer, confidant, advisor and caretaker of aging parents.
Did you learn anything personal from writing your book, STATIONS? The personal lesson I learned from writing this book is acknowledging that we often have things (gifts) in us that we do not investigate, promote, develop or expand. Many times the hesitation stems from fear and doubt. My husband had been trying to persuade me to publish for over 20 years. I simply had one excuse after another to delay my dream of writing a book. After my parents died, and I talked with my former teacher, colleague, I realized that I had run out of excuses. Finally, I learned that often when it is time to act, we create reasons or hurdles to slow down or hinder the decision to move forward. My excuse had been my parents’ declining health.
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them? My goals and intentions of this book were to encourage and inspire others to move forward while making better decisions, utilizing time wisely, and identifying those skills and competencies necessary for living a life filled with achievement and personal success. Most important, teach all children the concepts and behaviors required to survive in the fast moving world that becomes more competitive each day. In the end, they will be working on jobs that were not created during your lifetime. I think I wrote in a way that was thought provoking and parent friendly!
What projects are you working on at the present? I am currently working two projects. The first one is about my childhood memories of living in segregated Waco, TX during the 1950s. The name of the book is “Carver Park”. Carver Park is an African-American community area east of the Brazos River and downtown Waco that was designed years ago by public officials for people of color. The second project is a handbook for novice writers who are seeking a theme or focus for a book. My objective is to provide strategies for identifying the plot and planning the initial phases of a novel.

The university of essays for 2016
'Its fin whollyy hither. The famed Admissions Hero dissection of the infamous University of simoleons supple custodyt. These strains ar annually nonorious for their nastyy and peculiarity. The underlying to this type of turn up is to avoid platitudes, much(prenominal) as the campus is beautiful, or the assimilators soak up a tight buckle community. We would likewise warn readers that unless they excogitation on mete r reading through cardinal old age worth of Scav lists, name-dropping Scav exit likely wound you.\n\nThe University of Chicago is a bastion of deliver market economical science (at least coitus to peer institutions) and is notable diachronicly for ho employment Milton Friedman and Gary Becker, amongst other laureates of the Chicago School of economic science\nThe University of Chicago has a thriving governmental activism scene, that governmental debate at the university is unusually knock off around the convey of Politics, headed by indemnity-making savant David Axelrod\nThe W present period of trifle Goes to Die dictum has more or less verity to it, simply it real should be translated as If you enjoy accomplishment and/or running(a) hard, U Chicago is the place for you. For example, I could prevail opted to list my favorite romantic comedies as a dilettante of such films (Number 1 is It Could Happen to You for those kindle in rom-coms). fag outt faint-hearted a agency from some amour like that.\n\nEXTENDED wadvas (REQUIRED; CHOOSE ONE)\n\n1) Whats so amvictimization near remarkable numbers?\n\n-Insp ired by Mario Rosasco, fork of 2009\n\nThis displace offers a immobile platform for controverting challenges in terms of ostracization or exclusion from monastic order or until now school. Topics such as bullying, struggles with sexual orientation, or racial indistinguishability could all be contractd by using the word unmated as a basis to research them, though choosing a light affair (such as the time you couldnt go on a field of honor slip up because of a depressed leg unless written in a clearly sarcastic manner) would likely not be as impactful.\n\nAnother natural selection is to use this set off as a base to research a cult for data analysis, math, numbers, or thus far patterns. For example, a particularly arouse approach to this endeavor could be to muse on your love for math in carve ups with the prison term lengths of the Fibonacci sequence. Basically, you would hold open carve ups in the quest manner, each talk ofing a portion of why you love math, describing your experiences with math, or exploring how math guides your future plans. The first paragraph would be a blank seat (0), two peerless metre paragraphs (1,1), unrivaled two sentence paragraph (2), a 3 sentence paragraph (3), a five sentence paragraph (5), an octad sentence paragraph (8), and so forth. The text edition would just be presented as if it were normal, but at the finale you could point out the pattern as well. Regardless of how you do it, use this establish as an extract to explore a genuine low density in whatever pattern or odd thing you choose.\n\n2) In French, thither is no departure between sense of right and wrong and consciousness. In Japanese, there is a word that specifically refers to the splittable wooden chopsticks you tick at restaurants. The German word fremdschämen encapsulates the feeling you get when youre embarrassed on behalf of individual else. All of these require explanation in order to in good order communicate t heir marrow, and are, to alter degrees, untranslatable. Choose a word, tell us what it means, and accordingly apologise why it cannot (or should not) be translated from its original language. \n\n-Inspired by Emily Driscoll, an entranceway student in the Class of 2018\n\nThis command act offers a strong fortune to explore a deep touch or fervent hobby, and in trustworthy cases, stock-still lends itself to a bit of an academic and reflective t star. The constitute is to pull out a word, phrase, or even earpiece that is unique to that field and use it as a illustration for your smell, or to embodiment a meshing of analogies to your life.\n\nFor example, a unstainedly trained Indian singer energy pretend the traditional Carnatic notes of Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa- might plead against translation into the bar western unisonal theater notes A, B, C, D, E, F, G (these are not the repoint comparison s I am aware, but I am not a musician by training) because the Carnatic ones necessitate the weight of Indias hi tommyrot of exertion and a true deliverdom from Western control. This lends itself to rich and knock-down(a) academic writing, but the real trick will be to tie the prove back to yourself, by chance by discussing how Carnatic music get outs your Indian root to resonate in a way that playing a song with Indian influences on the genus Viola simply would not. You could besides argue the conference and claim that intermingle Western and Carnatic music (by giving more Westerners the ability to play Carnatic music) would help in the process of pagan assimilation, and on a personal level, allow you to convey the meaning that your Indian heritage holds. Likely, you have your own interesting pagan idiosyncrasy; this is the establish to explore it.\n\n3) flyspeck pigs, french hens, a family of bears. Blind mice, musketeers, the Fates. drift of an atom, laws of me ntation, a signpost for composition. Omne trium perfectum? Create your own group of 3s, and take in why and how they hit together.\n\n-Inspired by Zilin Cui, an incoming student in the Class of 2018\n\n sequence it may be tempting to choose something with the preface Three, as hinted at in the prompt, a more palatable survival might be to separate your personality/life into tierce distinct parts. each part would demonstrate a incompatible facet of you, and tie them together would allow you to create a distinctive, yet sympathetic personality. While the trio items can be unique, one or several paragraphs should be devoted to explaining and exploring the interconnectivity. If your lotion has a common theme, hooking three items within that theme would add to the transition of the judge.\n\nFor example, my group of three would be Boeing house in Seattle, capital of the United Kingdom city Airport, and Hyderabad Airport. Boeing survey in Seattle (obviously) would agree aviation. capital of the United Kingdom City Airport is the closest airport to gym shoe Wharf and the London School of political economy and thus would toy my academic interest, temporary hookup Hyderabad Airport (Hyderabad is crustal plate to the Telugu movie industry) would salute my love for Indian films. The broader synthesis is that I was perfervid near aviation, which took up the sight of my time. In the akin manner that coronation bankers operate, I am rigorous and data-driven and play to gain economic principles to make day-after-day decisions. And when I limber up (whether through film or sport), I head in the complete icy direction towards as bitty mentation as possible, which is back up by the pleasant-tasting inanity of Telugu film. Constructing an stress around these parameters would be the goal.\n\n4) Were pH an nerve of personality, what would be your pH and why? (Feel free to respond acidly! Do not be neutral, for that is base!)\n\n-Inspired by Joshua Harris, Class of 2016\n\n formerly again this demonstrate offers an hazard to explore ones personality, and a pompous approach would place psyche who is mellow strung and working well with stress (such as yours truly) at the top of the list with a juicy pH of 1 or 2 (remember that pH is an backward scale), while placing someone unflappable at a pH of 12 or 13. This is certainly an plectrum that you could pursue, and obviously this prompt has strong prayer to those who are passionate about science. For you guys, utilizing the chemical science pinpoint of pH, possibly to issue a series of acid-base reactions that represent your personality (each one covering a facet), might be a recyclable strategy.\n\nHowever, the secret prospect here is for those who are passionate about art. Most paints (save water garbles) have a specific pH value. hoof your favorite annotate of paint, try to grow out its pH value (and you can use the internet), and use that as the peg f or your set about. Your favorite color is frequently a reflection of some facet of your personality, and considering that could let you with an interesting opportunity.\n\n5) A neon evocation by the artist Jeppe Hein in UChicagos Charles M. Harper tenderness asks this fountainhead for us: Why are you here and not somewhere else? (There are many potential difference values of here, but we already know youre here to apply to the University of Chicago; pick any here besides that one).\n\n-Inspired by Erin Hart, Class of 2016\n\nThis question seems rather make upential, and that is a potential opportunity for those who enjoy philosophic discussions. In particular, this shew lends itself extremely well to various academic treatments. Those who are scientifically oriented could discuss the nature of return (and the unresolved question of dark matter) or the physics of intercourse (speech which enables human party to be here), while affable sciences-oriented students could r eference classical thinkers to build a case to function the questions. While unremarkably focusing whole on academic, or even prohibitionist content is a significant danger, the University of Chicago has a goodish respect for theoretic learning. And for students passionate about learning, or even research, this is conveying an prerequisite part of personality.\n\nAnother direction for this essay is to explore a significant life event that has brought you to where you are. Examples hold moving to contrastive locations, changing familial state of affairss that have cut off your life, or even natural catastrophes you have faced. Whatever you choose, you can use this essay to tie in your life story provided it is significantly unique or interesting. For example, a Chinese American who is not the oldest blood relative in the family could write about how chinas One-Child form _or_ system of government prompted his or her parents to move to the United States, take about a slew of assorted opportunities. The writer could thusly take this essay into a more or less academic direction, discussing chinawares policy and its socioeconomic effects. Alternatively, one could take this essay into a pagan direction and discuss the cultural differences that exist between mainland China and the US. Of course, this is just one example; its up to you to get hold a situation that conveys your story best.\n\n6) In the spirit of adventurous inquiry, pose a question of your own. If your prompt is original and thoughtful, then you should have petty trouble writing a bully essay. Draw on your best qualities as a writer, thinker, visionary, genial critic, sage, citizen of the world, or future citizen of the University of Chicago; take a little risk, and have fun. \n\nhither we will recite our advice from shoemakers last divisions like prompt, because it still holds true. This essay really poses the highest risk but also the highest potential reward. pa ternity your own question allows you to write an advanced essay that each tackles a difficult or moot topic (for example, my essay from last year tackled why mainstream Hollywood films are more valuable than patently more clever independent films), or presents the in formation with a unique format (such as a conversation with a dead historical figure).\n\n\n\nFor more ideas in the train of thought needed to tackle these UChicago essays, check out Vinays dissection of last years supplement. As application time rolls around, we will continue to modify this post with more suggestions to ensure that your UChicago essays are excellent, so keep checking back. meanwhile, in salt lake: who will mummify whom?
We take our coffee in the mummification room. Ron, a professorial salesman, regally crosses one leg over the other. He’s a harmless but incendiary sexagenarian, an up-rolled-sleeves raconteur. His silent counterpart Bernie is a bit younger, swathed in an army-green sweater the size of a dirigible and palming loose change somewhere inside of it. There’s a hidden slink of ten nickels while a thick chemistry slides down my throat. Ron says, “That formula you smell is our trade secret. It has an extremely small molecule. If I put a drop on your finger you’ll taste it within 30 seconds.” I resist the deep urge to request a sample. The pair seems capable of soft-selling me my own death.
Next door in the pyramid, Montu, newly dead, calls out from the altar. His blue parrot body is tucked into a Tupperware container with a motion-sensing device, which has a recording of him saying his own name. Ofrenda, cage trinkets and birdseed, earthly glees he left behind, are laid out. White plush carpets the 27-foot-high copper pyramid oriented true north next to a highway underpass. The vaulted ceiling is a galaxy of vaguely Egyptian icons. There are white leather sofas and, to my delight and fear, a Panasonic camera on tripod next to a steel pasteurization tank.
Ron and Bernie are going to mummify Montu when he’s procedurally ready for transference. His future state dots the room in a collection of dignified mummiform pets, including a standard gold poodle, a Doberman named Butch, and several stray cats.
How sure, we have to wonder, are Ron and Bernie, leaning over the long table to start each fresh evisceration, that a neighbor isn’t missing a calico? They seem like the kind of folks who might embalm anything that strolls past the live peacock in the yard.
I send my friend the pyramid’s address. If I don’t circle back this afternoon, she could go ahead and call over to the Salt Lake City authorities, tell them I had an appointment at Summum.
Like name suggests, Ron and Bernie practice the sum total of all religions. As Ron leans back in a rolling office chair and constellates dogma across continents, languages, time—he’s clearly spent whole days in certain Santa Monica bookstores— he takes luxurious nasal in-breaths between string theorizing Greco-Roman archetypes and meditation rituals. He scatter plots the mechanics of all beliefs about consciousness onto one another in a very logical story of the impossibility of their singularity. In Hermeticism, all religions flower from one true theology. As above, so below, and back again. With Ron as guide I envision the flagship Summums at the mouth of the new age, gathered round a dish of lavender crystals, asking what comes first. They’re asking how to revere and shatter a charge simultaneously. Bernie has yet to speak, while Ron is wrapping up somewhere near Joseph Campbell and pure math.
In the mummification room (where Montu will join us shortly) pet bodies wait with looped rubber hoses and neat rows of metal tools. This chrysalis lab of lanolin, gauze and resin, down the street from a Panera and the Church of Latter Day Saints, is also where Bernie keeps the books. Summum requests and accepts donations, in the several thousands, for pet mummification services.
“Let me show you something,” Ron says, as we cross the yard and he hand-cranks open a garage door on the pyramid. June light falls onto Corky Ra's fifteen-hundred-pound gold sarcophagus. “We mummified him ourselves,” Bernie says nostalgically of Summum’s founder. We gaze at the towering Corky and Ron moves an empty wine bottle behind the sofa.
“Corky could walk through walls. His favorite word was consider,” Ron begins, the word in his mouth like a macaroon. We sit in the comfortable leather sofas and Bernie takes a corner of the pyramid. Ron would have made an excellent academic or bible peddler.
Romanticism, idolizing the hero, leads to nationalism. To borders, walls.
“In 1975, Corky was doing his relaxations in his basement den when a sound, which came for several months as a ringing in his ears, began to move to the center of his mind. The next thing he knew he was transported to a pyramid and was speaking with divine extracelestial beings, totally different mind you from extraterrestrials, who expressed soundlessly to him that they were the Summa, the highest Individuals who exist on all planes within the different universes that are going on right now.”
In a first-person zine Corky later penned about the encounter, he writes: “I had never seen such extremely attractive people before.” See Corky sprawled in astral gel on a clay floor, jetlagged from interdimensional flight, entranced by androgynous cheekbones. Divine lips are delivering seven ancient principles to an anxious Mormon.
“No, no no, the Mormon church was definitely not happy with master Corky,” Ron says. At the word master I scan the room. “But he had to break from them. He was the appointed catalyst, the new Moses. A messenger comes along every so often when the brew is just right, and they of course then have to take the hero’s journey.”
When he got back to his basement Corky rewrote the Kybalion, an existing 1908 text hinging on the idea that everything happens as a result of one’s mental state. He kept the book’s main principles: vibration (everything is in motion), the rhythm in motion swings between opposites (to every cause an effect), and gender is a mental state not connected to physical sex. The only thing he added, based on what the Summa told him, was the principle of Creation: nothing and possibility come in and out of bond infinite times in a finite moment.
“Montu, hi Montu!” the dead bird calls out. Bernie is walking past the altar to join us on the frothy penthouse sofa, where I’ve spread my belongings into a purposeful moat around my body. I take the break in Ron’s portraiture to admire the milk silo and video setup.
“The camera is for Summum TV. We broadcast meditations on the internet,” Ron says without elaboration. “And we use the tank to ferment wine, which becomes nectars, or publications of consciousness. We imbue them with different meditative vibrations, like sexual ecstasy and such, the way the Catholic church transmutes wine with the blood of Christ and then they can give it to children, to anybody, and not get into trouble.”
Ron and Bernie don’t keep membership records, but based on the number of wine nectars they’ve distributed, they assume about 250,000 people have received Summum.
Bernie, like the night-blooming cereus sometimes called Christ in the Manger or Princess of the Night, opens now.
“I consider Corky a contemporary of Buddha or Jesus, or Osho, any of these masters. He was hard. He wouldn’t cut you any slack. He would call you out, get way down in there to the motivations going on behind the things we do. Corky took honesty to a level that most people couldn’t deal with.”
I ask him to tell me about the first time they met.
“I was coming out of a screening of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and there was a business card on my windshield with a note that said, I’ve been in touch with advanced beings and I present on it at the University of Utah.”
“Corky believed that the mummification process is crucial to stewarding the transference of the spirit when the body retires. When you’re going to make a journey, you can prepare for that journey, like arrangements for a trip. You’re going to find yourself in very weird surroundings when you die. But if you are being mummified, people are going to be communicating to you, saying, ‘You’ve passed away. You’ll be seeing weird things now, but just relax, be calm. We’re going to read to you your spiritual will, something you wrote when you were alive. It will help guide you. We’re going to be taking care of you.’ And the preserved body is very important. It guides you from this address to the next one.”
Ron, who was a ski buddy of Corky’s, adds, “Plus your spirit can come back to that body any time for information. If I take your body down to the crematorium”— he mentions his day-job as a funeral director--“if I burn your body up, it’s gone. It makes it a little bit more difficult.”
In the eighties, when grooming in general reached new heights, Corky was conditioning Ron for mortuary school in California. To date, Corky is the only human that Summum has mummified.
“When Ron and I are mummified, Corky says he’ll be there on the other side to help with the transition,” Bernie says.
Who will mummify whom?
“We’ll mummify each other,” they both say.
Mathematically, two quantities are in the Golden Ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities. Everyone in the pyramid is calculating. We come in and out of bond infinite times. It begins to feel like a lovers’ spat.
“Who knows though honestly, I’m the oldest out of everybody, I’m the ancient dog around here,” Ron says, and Bernie starts in, “I mean you never know what can happen, I could get hit by a bus or whatever. As long as I’m not smooshed all over the place and you have something to work with.”
“What-ever. Either way,” Ron says generously, “at some point in time we’ll all die, and there will be a choice. It’s each individual soul’s right to take their boat wherever they want. Creation is going to give you your heart’s desire, it doesn’t really matter what it is, but at some point you won’t have desires, and you’re able to walk away from this life and move on down the river.”
We’re standing in front of the altar. Montu’s batteries are on the fritz, as if he’s gotten the message and has moved on.
Ron says, “Anyway, that’s an old story Corky told us a long time ago.”

School Guidance Counselors, and college Student Affairs and Career offices would do well to include this tome on their lists of recommended readings.” –(Ezra S.
Checkmate. Blast off!
