just found this oldass post from jan 2020 and frankly im still valid.
also thematically its well timed for me to find this again bc just last night i was once more seething about authors who tried to destroy archive.org and accused it of piracy, while ignoring that most of their profit complaints can be linked to the monopolistic tendencies of the big publishers! hate authors mad about poor people legally reading for free on a DIGITAL LIBRARY and supported their publishers, whomst they had just been complaining about the fucking bigoted unfair pay gap in different author advances, and then you see them promoting like sales to buy their book for a dollar on amazon and ignoring the prhss merger!. hmmm i thought i processed this anger last night but actually im bitter forever
ok now the old post:
speaking as a literal librarian nothing frustrates me more than people on this site using the existence of libraries to shame people for downloading movies or books or w/e for free like a lot of stuff is available at libraries but not everything, instend of spending your energy scolding poor people just make educational posts about libraries or better yet advocate on behalf of your local to help it get more funds so it can grow its collection or even reach out directly to your local library to see if there is any need for volunteers (probably not lol) or any ways for you to donate money. Libraries are great dont use them as a cudgel against people you are annoyed by
#personal#lizbrarian#saltblogging#saw someone comment on that post going around about american propaganda about foreign films being like ‘i can get a soviet movie at my#library right now’ and its like#cool its good thats available to you but like the majority of public libs are small and rural#they dont all have access to resources like that#also i feel like there is a chance they are talking about their college library and not their public library and its like#as someone who works at an academic library private college libraries generally have a more diverse selection of materials and resources#when compared to an average public lib#which would be why they have access to soviet films when the priority of a public lib is new releases and popular films#bc public libs are about things that will actively circulate whereas college libs also care about circulation#like when weeding#but can afford to be more dusty and archival#and someone else on that post was like ‘you dont have access to foreign films uhh try netflix’#and its like a) the post isnt about lack of access its about decades of media telling us foreign films are silly boring and weird#b) you know netflix costs uhhh money so unless younwant to give your password to everyone you are condescending too shut up#also fuck streaming services anyways#same as my complaints about big metro publibs being treated as having standard resources like on that one post abt 3d printers#that said 'most' publibs have one like! with what programming/tech grant money!#in a rural public you say heres tech money are they replaces their 15 yr old desktops or buying a tech that#most of their population wont use! bc they kno the community needs
