Hanahaki Disease is an illness born from one-sided love, where the patient throws up and coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. The infection can be removed through surgery, but the feelings disappear along with the petals. The only cure is if the feelings are returned. If they are unable to be cured in time, they will die via suffocation. 

The sufferer initially only coughs up seeds, but they will progressively cough up petals, stems- then full flowers.

The main flower and roots grow around the lungs, heart and eventually in the windpipe.

The flower is also parasitic, as it will sap the life out of their host if it’s main source of food (the sufferer’s affections for their love) becomes inefficient.

The flower differs from person to person, depending on their own lives and personalities. A whole lot of symbolism goes into those flowers.

The removal surgery takes away more than just the sufferer’s love for their love interest. It removes all the love and affection they have, making them completely unable to feel those emotions again.

The origins of the disease is unknown, but there are myths that suppose that someone who was madly in love with someone they couldn’t have accidentally swallowed a Pokémon’s Leech Seed and said Leech Seed fed off that love until they died.

The disease can only be cured if the sufferer confesses to their love and their love returns the feelings whole-heartedly. If not, the sufferer will eventually be asphyxiated by the flower growing inside of them.
