#that isn’t just ‘the mind exists and some conditions predominantly affect this’

So I did philosophy at uni and was really interested in philosophy of mind and took several modules on it. And I saw a post calling something that definitely wasn’t mind body dualism. So this post is to say that you can recognise that a condition is a mental illness without subscribing to mind body dualism.
The belief that we have a mind isn’t on its own dualism. Dualism is the belief that the mind isn’t made of/ doesn’t arise from physical stuff or processes but instead is made of a separate “mental stuff”
You can recognise that we have subjective thoughts, behaviours and emotions and sense of self that arise out of physical processes in the brain (and beyond), and call those things a mind while not being a dualist.
You can call an illness that disrupts those physical processes in a way that causes (mainly) symptoms that affect those mental experiences (subjective thoughts, sense of self, behaviours and emotions) a mental illness without being a dualist.
You can definitely say “people with conditions which affect their mind (and have historically been called and are still called mental illness) have a different experience of ableism to people whose disabilities affect mainly non-mental parts of them (known as physical disabilities) which includes being called different slurs” without being a dualist.
On a side note it’s ridiculous to say “my movement disorder affects my brain and so does schizophrenia so I can call myself slurs related to psychosis” so “my mental illness impacts my brain which is physical so I can call myself cripple“ also doesn’t make sense
#cripplepunk discourse#mind body dualism#sorry for getting involved in this again#but dualism is a specific philosophical position#that isn’t just the mind exists and some conditions predominantly affect this’

This is Karu and I:
Just when I managed to be awesomely social yesterday morning and afternoon. :( I got to naturally crack stupid childish jokes and be able to show my affection organically. But then, this...
I even starved myself last night. The plan was that he would visit Sofi for a bit and then we'd eat, but more friends came.
That wasn't even the trigger... As Karu entered the room, he told me to go eat ahead on my own that he'd like to eat with them, and if that's "okay".
It's that again. It's... Like he's leaving me out of things. Like I'm kept in a shell.
These thoughts (sprouting from perceived actions, not Karu) are also what made me cry a lot about the Laguna trip. It wasn't "hey it'll be fun, wanna come?"—again the options were either stay home, or go to Cavite alone.
Joining's never an option.
I know that's not why Karu does this. It's usually out of consideration for my social anxiety (whereas I am leaning towards challenging my anxiety; we seem to be on different pages T__T). But the voices are too loud.
Words are so powerful, and it doesn't help that I love poetic interpretations.
"Joining is not an option."
It... Makes me feel sad. But I don't have will to kill myself or anything like that. I'm just sad. And I think my feeling discourages me, so I end up boxing myself to his options.
Because times like these help my thoughts become predominantly negative. I am reminded of times when I actually actively voiced out my will to join and was instead met with more discouragement... Lack of funds, crowds too big, place too far...
It keeps happening. My mind protects me (or should I say traps me) by saying that no matter what this will be the outcome.
My past dictates my future.
I know I have written a lot of what contradicts these thoughts clearly, but I forget that I am in the mist sometimes.
The past has no power to tell you what you can't become.
The past is just that—memories.
As a writer, I know that words cannot be tamed. But as a writer and a librarian, my goal is not to take sides ("good" vs "bad"; in this case, sad isn't so good but sad isn't bad), but to understand.
Time to overwrite.
If you could change the world today, would you?

Iiiiiit’s Dolly!
My answer, since it’s too long:
yas! My ultimate goal has always been to understand myself. Understanding a bit of myself helped me become more interested in others. And understanding a bit about others helped me become more interested in the bigger, and bigger pictures haha
Identity fascinates me just as much as communication does. Because I realized now that interaction is a large basis for identity. So, I ended up bumping into communication. Words fascinate me. The idea that we are talking right now to the best of our ability to convey and receive is just incredible
Yet it is always imperfect. but it can be better. It can always be better. As a creature miraculously brought to existence, I find a second miracle: evolution. It seems that we have potential to keep changing for the better.
So I feel frustrated whenever I observe (especially personally) failure in understanding between people. There has to be better ways to understand things. Or at least come to peace with things, since there are just some things we cannot know.
It's become a really long rant hahah but anyway all the tiny yet complex interactions with my environment and with my self have led me to be in constant search for some change. Hopefully for the better. Life is so multidimensional I cannot even.
Psychology is not a science at all (I am so sorry to all of you fans out there but it's the truth), but it's the best tool we have as of now. Just because something cannot be determined with numbers, doesn't mean it doesn't exist :)
I fear the uncertain just as the rest of humankind does, but it comes with finding the truth and believing in something.

Yay!
I initiated a lunch date with Ms.Charree and she accepted. I also initiated a conversation with Ms. Shibumi and so managed to gather new information.
The reason her prices for food sets haven't gone up is because their aim was always just to have enough to live sufficiently, and it never changed even in this inflated economic condition. She clearly stated that their goal was not profit; their goal was life.
God bless her and her family!

Also got to talk with Ms. Bel :) I could tell she found me easier to talk to than before hehe
And! I got to chat with Charles with much more organic-ness to it. I finally know who Sir August is hahahaha

Had awesome dinner with Theodore and Karu! I still don't know Theodore enough so I don't have enough ammo for conversation, but it's the same with him and we're both socially awkward (him less so) so it's good haha
I had Karu read my entries! Hm. It's been a while since I got feedback from him. He didn't today, either. Even when he reads my poetry stuff. It's like he's still busy piecing them altogether.
We did Xenogears!! so hooookeddddd

Lord of Discord (Team Plasma - Ghetsis)
This isn’t just a bath…it’s a Plasbath!
When designing a blend for Ghetsis, my first thought was, “Whatever I do, it needs to have Patchouli in it.” And whenever I think of patchouli, I think of my favorite Lush autumn release: Lord of Misrule!
Lord of Misrule is a dark green bath bomb that is predominantly patchouli and black pepper-based, but it also contains an ingredient that typically tends to give me headaches: Vanilla Absolute. I switched that for Peru Balsam (which has a vanilla-like smell) and added Copaiba Balsam on top of that because I wanted to add some woodsy, masculine undertones to this bomb.
The end result is an aggressively energetic green bomb that refuses to be taken lightly. The Black Pepper in the blend wakes you back up after an exhausting day, the Peru Balsam cleanses your skin, the Copaiba Balsam boosts your confidence, and the Patchouli leaves you feeling like you can conquer the world…or at least Unova.
And fun fact: the white froth this bath bomb makes will hiss at you if you pull it closer to your body!
Now it’s time to talk about the pros and cons of these oils from a safety perspective…
Aromatherapy isn’t just about pretty smells and scented bath water. Essential oils are in such a high concentration that even absorbing them through your skin can leave you with the therapeutic (and potentially toxic) benefits.
If you are allergic to a plant, you are 100% without question going to be super allergic to the essential oil.
There’s also such a thing as contraindications: where some oils may affect you in weird ways if you have a certain medical condition or take certain medications.
The information below is for your safety if you want to attempt to make this blend at home (as a bath bomb, a body spray, or even scented bath salts). And do be sure to wear gloves. Some of these oils have recommended dilution rates as small as 0.4%. You don’t want that to slide on bare skin!
Patchouli Leaf Essential Oil (50% of Synergy)
If you aren’t familiar with the smell of patchouli, stoner shops tend to burn it as incense to hide the smell of cannabis. It’s spicy, smoky, and very distinct. It blends with a lot of different oils and is one of the few that actually grows stronger with age!
Patchouli Essential Oil has a familiar smell. This scent was a favorite among the Hippie Counterculture of the 1960s and we still associate it with stoners and smokers today. It covers the scent of marijuana and blends wonderfully with so many things.
It has a slight peppery aroma and is also the key ingredient in my favorite Lush fragrance (Lord of Misrule).
Pros:
Aside from being the quintessential pot deodorizer, patchouli oil is also used as medicine for colds, tumors, headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
Also, if you’re an alcoholic and suffer from chronic bad breath, patchouli oil can be used to hide the smell.
I also love the fact it can be used to increase your libido!
Cons:
Patchouli Leaf Essential Oil is generally considered to be safe, but is best avoided if you suffer from asthma. We found that one out the hard way in my family.
Black Pepper Essential Oil (20% of Synergy)
Black Pepper brings to mind the scent of black peppercorns, but without any of the sneeze factor! There are also faint floral undertones to this oil and it works wonders inside a “wake-up” blend. It’s a key ingredient in Plant Therapy’s InvigorAid, which I swear by. That synergy is like liquid brainpower.
However, I’ll be honest with you. I mainly put it in here because in one study, Black Pepper Essential Oil was determined to be a possible anti-smoking aid. You can diffuse it if you’re trying to cut your nicotine addiction!
Pros:
Black Pepper Essential Oil promotes better circulation and can improve aches and pains brought about by exercising or grueling manual labor.
It’s also a boost for blends where you want to stay alert and focused. I recommend diffusing it if you’re studying, because it’s perfect for term paper composition, cram sessions, and annoying piles of homework!
Another neat trick you can do while diffusing Black Pepper Essential Oil (and I’ve done this) is eat your favorite spicy or savory foods. It will taste even more flavorful!
Cons:
If you want to sleep tonight, don’t use Black Pepper Essential Oil before bed. This is a wake-up smell and will keep your brain active!
Keep out of the reach of children. Don’t use with children under the age of 6.
This is not a cat-safe oil.
Copaiba Balsam Oleoresin (15% of Synergy)
Copaiba is an oleoresin taken from the sap of a tree in the Copaifera genus. It’s one of the best anti-inflammatory substances on earth and has a mild, honey-like smell with woody undertones. It’s rather mild, however, so it’s best to mix it with other things and simply reap its benefits.
Pros:
Add it to your skin and hair care regimen! Copaiba Oleoresin’s astringent properties tighten the skin for a more youthful, radiant appearance. It can reduce the intensity of existing wrinkles and strengthen your skin and scalp to reduce risks of lesions with age. It’s also great for eliminating blisters, pimples, and even mild scars.
Decongest with Copaiba! This is an asthma-safe oil and also a good oil to have if you suffer from congenital congestion problems. The anti-inflammatory properties of Copaiba relax the airways and work the knots out of your muscles. Irritation may dramatically reduce.
Having a sore, rough day? Maybe Copaiba can help you! Copaiba’s analgesis properties can help loosen tight muscles, reduce pain, and even ease bad headaches.
Cheer up! Copaiba Oleoresin has often been used to break up the blues and boost your mood. Its sweet, gentle smell can be blended with other soothing oils (like Basil Linalool, Bergamot Mint, or Ho Wood) to put you in a peaceful state of mind.
Boost your immune system! Copaiba Oleoresin has a strong antibacterial nature. It can protect your skin (even if you have mild cuts) from developing an infection. Just be sure to use a carrier if you decide to apply this oil on your skin. Safe dilutions are important!
Lower your blood pressure! Copaiba’s combination of anti-inflammatory and soothing properties can help reduce tension and strain on blood vessels.
Copaiba is an antifungal oil! The terpenes inside Copaiba Oleoresin are super effective against a lot of fungi (including nail fungus and athlete’s foot). If you’ve got one of these types of infections, consider applying Copaiba to the infected area. It should speed up the healing process!
Reduce water weight and detoxify the body! Copaiba is a mild diuretic. It stimulates your kidneys and bladder to expel urine more regularly, which in turn helps your body flush out toxins.
Cons:
Like most other wood-based essential oils, this is not a cat-safe oil. Do not diffuse with a cat in the room.
Excessive use of Copaiba Oleoresin may result in stomach problems.
Essential oils should never be taken internally without first consulting your physician. This oil is for diffusion and application purposes only.
Since this oil lowers blood pressure, exercise caution if you have atherosclerosis, diabetes, low blood pressure, or a history of stroke.
Balsam of Peru Essential Oil (15% of Synergy)
Balsam of Peru is a resinous substance that comes from the Myroxylon balsamum plant. It smell is reminiscent of vanilla with a touch of clove and cinnamon. As a result, it pairs beautifully with those oils–as well as orange oils!
It’s one of the most versatile oils not only with its scent, but with its therapeutic benefits…so long as it’s done in moderation.
Note: Balsam of Peru only makes up about 15% of Lord of Discord, but you can certainly smell it. Please read.
Pros:
Balsam of Peru has been used for centuries to treat tumors, expel intestinal worms, and flush out your kidneys by overstimulating them. It’s a powerful diuretic.
Some people occasionally put Balsam of Peru directly on the skin for infected and slow-healing wounds, burns, scrapes, ulcers, rashes, and itchy areas…though I’d caution against this. Plant Therapy, the company I bought my oil from, recommends 0.4% dilution for Balsam of Peru, so definitely do NOT apply that stuff directly on your skin. Diffusing it in your tub should be OK. Just make sure the bath is full before you go in!
Some dentists use this essential oil to treat dry sockets: a painful condition that occurs when a tooth is extracted and a clot forms in the gums too soon.
It’s an immunity booster! Not only have some studies shown that Balsam of Peru can stimulate the immune system and eliminate free radicals in the body, but it’s also got strong astringent and antimicrobial properties. People can even use it to treat mites and bedbugs!
It fights your anxiety! Balsam of Peru’s calming scent contains a slew of chemicals that promote a peaceful, calm mind. It makes it easier to breathe and brings about a comforting scent.
Breathe more easily! Balsam of Peru has natural expectorant properties, making it easier for you to blow out whatever’s left of your stuffy nose or clogged-up throat. Just be sure to inhale. Don’t swallow!
Pamper your hair and scalp! Balsam of Peru can help you combat dandruff and a dry, itchy scalp.
Cons:
Despite its many benefits, Balsam of Peru is one of the most allergenic substances known to man. If you get headaches over artificial vanilla, strong perfumes, or scented things in general; chances are you’re allergic to Balsam of Peru.
Although Balsam of Peru can be used over short periods of time (never more than 1 week), people can build up a tolerance to it and suffer allergic skin reactions if the substance is abused.
If you use this essential oil, use plenty of sunblock when you go outside: especially if you have light skin. Balsam of Peru increases your sensitivity to the sun.
Do not use this essential oil if you are nursing or pregnant, as not enough is known about Balsam of Peru to say it’s safe. Ere on the side of caution.
Since Balsam of Peru is a powerful diuretic, prolonged usage of the oil may result in kidney damage (even failure). Do not use this oil if you have kidney problems. Period.

My opinions on parts of Andy Hughes’s thesis which relates to my project
I’ve come across many photographers during my project for inspiration to gain ideas and Andy Hughes is one of them. I’ve looked at his work and have found a thesis written by him on his website. He discusses how photographers and the media present plastic pollution to the public. Hughes’s thesis is called Plastic Pornography, Hughes asks the question. Is my brain being polluted by plastic pornography? He refers images of plastic pollution to pornography by explaining that, “Imagery that also aspires to create ‘intense emotional reactions’, specifically images which intend to ‘raise awareness’ about plastic pollution. Images of turtles trapped in plastic, seabird carcasses displaying ingested plastic waste, floating plastic objects in blue pristine seas, rivers of flowing waste.”
Hughes touches upon companies like UK broadcaster Sky who’s aim is to draw the public's attention on the issues surrounding plastic that are affecting our oceans and to educate them. “Part of their campaign includes making and creating a type of public artwork, usually sculpture and this often consists of creating scaled up versions of a giant whale or dolphin made of throwaway single-use plastic bottles. This is towed or driven around the country.”
He presents questions from this campaign, “Ask yourself the following: who benefits from these types of projects? what do they aim to achieve and more importantly if they are asking you to change your behaviour, it’s worth asking, have they changed theirs? Is the ‘use’ of art really the best way to change human behaviour or is it just another propaganda tool to shift responsibility from the corporate world to you, the consumer.”
In my opinion, the use of art is one of the best if not the best way to change human behaviour regarding plastic pollution. Creating sculptures is completely different to what we normally see on the news and social media. They grab your attention and your imagination but they still maintain the crucial message but just in a different way. Compared to an image of a lone plastic bottle on a beach or a close up shot of a plastic bottle.
For me, a sculpture has more impact than the last two examples I have just mentioned. We have all seen those images before, from projects created by photographers. I have even produced these types of images on a couple of shoots during my current project about waste pollution. These images reveal the issue to the general public who care about this topic and who are fully aware and educated on this issue. But I feel these images struggle to get across to the wider public, in terms of the lack of impact they have. Whereas, I believe that the wider public who are not necessarily fully engaged or care about this issue would most certainly be more in favour of doing so and take action if they saw a sculpture entirely made from plastic.
Using Sky’s example, the image of the whale can be seen below. Their decision to create sculpture of a 10m whale which is made up of a quarter of a ton of single use plastic which was recovered from the ocean and beach cleans will most certainly grab the wider public's attention. Especially by the size. Representing the amount of plastic that enters the world’s oceans. Is it over the top? No, because it reveals the shocking and alarming rate of plastic entering our oceans, revealing the scale of the problem.
Plasticus arrives at Sky's headquarters in Osterley, London
A sculpture like this grabs your attention at first by the sheer size, then when you look closely it hits you in terms of what the sculpture is made of and then the message of what the sculpture stands for and is showing you starts to affect you emotionally. Especially using a whale to present this issue. That's my opinion when I saw this sculpture of a whale. Photographer's have tried different ways of presenting plastic pollution but I feel that some don’t have the same impact as a sculpture does. Presenting an immediate impact.
Hughes goes on to ask questions as to whether creating art to present an issue like plastic pollution is necessary. “Art is just one way of engaging with these issues, and it can range from a kind of self-expression and therapy to hard-hitting image making. Which leads me to my main point, where does the art in activism or art in arts activism exists? How should it be viewed? Is the ‘art’ element in the mind of the creator or in the mind of the audience and can the artistic or visualisation presented itself be a form of pollution?”
I agree with Hughes’s point that art is one way of touching upon this issue but I believe that art should be viewed the same as other ways of showing plastic pollution. For example, Mike Perry’s Môr Plastig project focuses on individual images of plastic bottles, it may not be the most striking project but it connects with people. Just because sculptures are predominantly referred to as pieces of art doesn't mean they should be undervalued or discarded because they are somewhat more appealing and creative than let’s say Perry’s individual images of plastic bottles.
Creating sculptures can still maintain and reveal the plastic pollution issue and have the same significance as other ways of showing plastic pollution, it’s just another way of presenting the issue. Like Hughes said, “Art is just one way of engaging with these issues.” I just feel that, even though Hughes isn’t admitting he dislikes art/sculptures presenting plastic pollution. It’s the way he is posing his questions, to me they are leaning towards him not being in favour of sculptures and almost undermining them and their creativity.
In my opinion, sculptures are a breath of fresh air, we’ve all seen individual images of plastic bottles. Seeing sculptures made of plastic provoke a more emotional impact just like Sky’s whale sculpture. To me they have the potential to reach out to more people. They provoke a similar reaction when seeing images of animals trapped in plastic and rivers filled with waste.
Another question Hughes poses is,“Will collecting washed up plastic and arranging into a pretty aesthetic arrangement and calling it art lead to a Utopian future, a clean or cleaner planet?
I think to a certain extent yes, sculptures like my image below will lead to a cleaner planet. We will never be entirely free of plastic/waste but sculptures will most certainly help. They won’t solve all our problems but seeing plastic/waste pollution in a different form can have different effects on people. In terms of engaging with the issue more than just seeing a lone plastic bottle on a beach. Seeing those types of images over and over again can seem repetitive and might potentially lose impact over time on people but sculptures are an entirely different way of raising awareness of plastic pollution to the public. Some people will have different reactions and have different emotions towards certain images and projects in how photographers portray plastic pollution.
From my own experience, looking at sculptures has had a different effect on me. I've already touched upon Lorenzo Vuttri’s work which inspired my image which is shown below. His project reveals the issue of constant development in his sculptures. Even though his project isn’t about plastic pollution, creating a sculpture perfectly suits and represents his message, the constant need to rebuild. An image of debris on location wouldn’t have had the same effect that a sculpture does. An image of debris shows demolition but doesn't yet reveal the constant need to rebuild. Creating sculptures which reveal an important issue may not connect with everyone but they most certainly are useful for specific projects.
I disagree with Hughes’s comment about arranging washed up plastic into ″pretty aesthetic.” For my fourth shoot on my project, I chose to create pieces/sculptures with objects that I collected that had washed up on land. I didn’t wash them because I wanted to show the condition of these objects, having spent a vast amount of time in the sea to disgust the viewer. I chose to create sculptures because I thought my images of just an individual object had little impact.
This image above isn’t supposed to be pretty, it’s showing the objects condition, dirt, dents and rips. My aim was to create images that at first glance look interesting and then provoke a reaction in terms of realising what the image includes. My argument is, I feel that sculptures like this will grab the viewer’s attention a lot more than an image of an individual object. This sculpture is appealing not pretty in terms of the placement of each object but it’s purpose is to disgust the viewer in terms of the condition of the object, the amount of objects I find and the variety. Creating a sculpture doesn't necessarily make it pretty or any more appealing than a project focusing on individual plastic bottles. They both raise an important issue, just presented in a different form.

Blog Entry #2.
I like to think I grew up okay. I grew up in a predominantly Catholic area with a relatively affluent yet loving family, graduated elementary and high school from a private (also Catholic) institution, and now I’m taking undergraduate studies in a private university, my entire future laid out before me with many more possibilities to come. I was, and still am, grateful.
Even at a young age, I was taught to be a person for others. My grandparents are the ones I have to thank for continuously instilling the values that make up a “good” person in me. But over time, I wondered if those were enough. Nowadays, society demands for more than what a person is capable of giving, and I often thought if I could keep up with their expectations or if I’m already falling behind.
Gaining a multitude of personal achievements is probably one of them. I’m not exceptionally skilled at any subject or sport, I get decent grades (mostly out of luck, surprisingly) and I just want to pass, if anything. I don’t set any definite goals and I myself lower expectations just to not disappoint anyone in the process. I think my family got too used to that, which is why any achievement— whether big or small— matters to them. I’m usually really unmotivated, too. I told my dad about this once, and he just said, “As long as you pass, that’s enough for us. We know you try and that you do your best” with the warmest smile a father could possibly pull off. I promised myself to do better after that, though there are some instances wherein I still choose to procrastinate.
Growing up wealthy is another. I hated it at times because people always expected me to cover most expenses and reasoned it out with “afford mo naman kasi eh.” That went on until high school. People thought I’d give the most in school donations, that I’d pay for the materials utilized in group projects, that I’d even treat my classmates to food whenever they had to come over to my house. I didn’t like it, but I didn’t have the heart to refuse. That is, until my 12th grade seatmate wrote me a letter before our school retreat and said she knew about the problem, and that it was okay to say no. I’ve said it more often ever since.
Gender-wise, firsthand experiences tell me that some girls do have it harder than some guys. I grew up with guy playmates and my girl cousins weren’t born until much later. At some point they stopped including me in their games because they said I was too girly. I often get told I’m too fat yet they’re okay with my brother being big for his age, too. I wasn’t allowed to hang out with my friends and if I did, I couldn’t stay out too late. Meanwhile my brother stays out until midnight and my family doesn’t mind. It was unfair, and I voiced out my concerns with my parents. All they said was, “Well, it’s because you’re a girl.” I never thought it was a logical argument, but I just dealt with it because pressing on the matter further felt like talking to a wall sometimes.
In terms of sexuality, I think my family had hoped I’d turn out straight because of their Catholic background. My uncle also told me being gay was going against the Church and its teachings. Now if that was bad, imagine how worse it was in high school. Not that any of the girls cared either because they dated each other, but it had to be done in secret. Nothing too showy because it would mean trouble. It was suffocating and I just wanted to come out without having to worry about the possibility of me being disowned (an exaggeration, but not untrue). I did, though, at some point. My grandparents knew about it first, and they admitted to being homophobic from the get-go, but that changed when I opened up to them (in tears, even, hahahaha) and they’ve learned to be more open-minded and accepting towards the LGBTQ+ community. On the other hand, my parents were furious when they found out. Wouldn’t talk to me for an entire day until they’ve finally calmed down and realized that things couldn’t go on like this forever. They were gentle this time and they wanted to understand me better, because it was here when they realized that they didn’t know as much about me as they thought they did. It was nice.
I think my stories turned out pretty well in the end, but some people still have their expectations. I do have my own so I just do what I can to make myself and the people around me proud. These expectations affected me in many different ways, and even though they often made me question who I am and what I’m truly capable of, I can’t say that they weren’t helpful in developing and shaping the person that I am today.
College, however, is a different story.
Being born into a family of doctors was something I was always proud to share. Mostly because the follow-up question was something related to what I want to be when I grow up. Back then, I was so sure I wanted to become an OB-GYNE just like my father, and to tread the path he took up for years. Now, I don’t even know if I’m taking up the right course or if I’m happy being in it. I’m not sure if it’s something I’ll come to love in the near future. I guess I was more so conditioned into thinking being a doctor is the only career path suited for me given my family background. That’s what my grandmother says, at least. I often asked questions such as, “Is Bio even the right choice for me?” whenever I had time to sit down and talk with her, but she’d always say, “Who’s going to take over the hospital if you won’t? You’re the eldest. Everything you need is right here, you just have to take it.”
My closest friends know about this problem more than anyone. Day by day I feel sapped and unmotivated and that’s something I can never tell my family. Being in Ateneo itself is a privilege and we both know that. I can’t mess up now, or even think about quitting. I keep telling myself to just stick with it until I find something better.
I guess that’s a notable hindrance to my four years in college. I have no idea what drives me to be the best that I can be after realizing that this isn’t what makes me happy. I can’t give my 101% effort into something I’m unsure of, making it hard for me to accomplish certain tasks. That doesn’t mean I don’t try, though. It’s just hard.
Thankfully, I have an understanding family. Even when I’m tired or having a hard time, they encourage me to do my best and simple reminders such as “don’t forget to eat dinner” or “sleep early tonight and rest well, you’ve worked hard today” are enough to get me through an evening of continuous studying.
I have friends, too, both from high school and in college. I’m just lucky my best friends from high school are also in Ateneo, but as for those who went on to other colleges, we try to plan meetups as much as we can to catch up with one another. It’s nice knowing that people care about you enough to check up on you. As for college, I hang out with my blockmates often. We share the same frustrations so we confide in each other whenever we struggle with certain things. I often tell them I’m sorry I ask for notes often because mine tend to be incomplete or if I need a lot of help when it comes to understanding various topics, but they don’t mind one bit. A friend even said, “It’s okay, Justine, magtutulungan naman tayo.” and I wanted to cry then and there. Friends like them are a reminder that good people do exist and you can have nice things in life.
I also have a very supportive girlfriend whose unfailing love and support keeps me going whenever my confidence starts to falter. She reminds me to take care of myself when I forget to do so and is proud of me regardless of the things I’ve achieved. I literally can’t name anyone better.
Having these kinds of relationships with people is the best resource we can be gifted with. You may lose your way from time to time, but surrounding yourself with good people makes it easier for you to get back on track. Despite all these negative feelings, setbacks, and uncertainty, I know I’ll get through them with the support I receive from the people around me.
And sometimes I like to sit and dwell on life as a whole, how short it is yet sometimes so unbearably prolonged. I wonder who I’ll turn out to be, if I’ll be proud of myself in the long run. As if the entire world rests on the tip of my tongue and it is up to me to roll it around and taste all that it has to offer.

Methods We’re Nonetheless Preventing The Civil Rights Motion
Some individuals consider that with the top of slavery got here the top of widespread and rampant racism. That perception is unfortunately removed from the reality. Abolishing slavery was simply step one, however even 150 years later, we nonetheless have lots to combat for. Fortunately individuals all around the world acknowledge that we’ve to take motion with the intention to finish the systematic racism that impacts so many individuals each single day. We’ve a protracted technique to go, however with assist from everybody, we will creep slowly in direction of complete equality. Listed here are a bunch of civil rights and equality requirements that we’re nonetheless preventing for immediately.
Supply: Pixabay
“Black lives matter” would possibly simply be a hashtag for some, however for others, it indicators the start of a brand new period. Police brutality and systematic racism have been round because the starting of our nation, nevertheless it appeared as if for a very long time solely these affected by it had been conscious of it. #Blacklivesmatter helps present simply how highly effective social media could be on the subject of educating others about social points in addition to organizing teams to return collectively to ignite and encourage change.
Supply: Pixabay
One factor that we’re preventing for immediately is that every one cops be required to put on physique cameras. When conditions involving police brutality occur, it’s all the time the police who’ve the final say in what really occurred. Having the cops put on the physique cams can assist in displaying the scenario’s true occasions. However sadly, many cops have been turning their cameras off, towards direct orders and legal guidelines of their residence state.
Damaged Window Policing is a time period that refers back to the give attention to policing minor crimes and actions. When somebody breaks the legislation in a minor approach, corresponding to sleeping in a park, possessing a small quantity of medication, or simply trying “suspicious,” police nonetheless would possibly use extreme pressure. In 2014, over 250 individuals had been killed by police for collaborating in these non-threatening crimes. Although they could nonetheless be breaking the legislation, they want assist in different methods… and never a bullet of their physique.
Supply: Pixabay
If you run right into a felony, you name the cops. But when the cop is a felony, who do you name? Sadly, you continue to should name the police. It is a drawback, as many instances cops can have pals who assist reduce the punishment of crimes they might commit. As an alternative, we’re preventing to ascertain an all-civilian oversight construction to assist finish this biased punishment.
Supply: Pixabay
When an officer feels threatened for his or her life, they’ve each proper to attempt to defend themselves and the individuals round them. However all too typically, cops pull out weapons in conditions that truly require lesser technique of diffusing the scenario. In 2014, over 250 unarmed individuals had been killed by police. However fortunately, civil rights activists are working onerous to give you an answer to search out different methods to manage the means by which police defend themselves.
Supply: Pixabay
With regards to investigating a scenario of police brutality, there are a selection of steps you must undergo till your case can really be investigated. This makes it tough for individuals to really get their circumstances checked out, as lots of people don’t have the authorized or monetary assist it takes to comply with by way of with their accusations.
Supply: Pixabay
When you may have a authorities made up of predominantly white males, you’re going to have some biased judgment in sure legal guidelines that go. White males make up just one/three of the inhabitants, however they exceed over half of the make-up of presidency officers. Who we’ve in workplace ought to mirror who we’ve dwelling locally with the intention to deliver extra consideration to racial and gendered points.
Supply: Pixabay
One factor that may severely assist forestall police brutality within the first place could be to place officers in coaching by way of a greater program. Proper now, officers in coaching spend 58 hours studying to the right way to shoot weapons, however solely eight hours studying to de-escalate quite a lot of conditions. That may be a severely disturbing imbalance.
Supply: Pixabay
If you earn a living primarily based on how many individuals you arrest, you might be in all probability going to be arresting extra individuals than mandatory with the intention to hold getting paid. Cops typically have quotas that they’ve to fulfill as effectively for sure forms of arrests, so oftentimes individuals get critical fees for crimes that they could have gotten off for in different conditions.
Supply: Pixabay
As beforehand acknowledged, police don’t undergo correct coaching on a regular basis. This typically leads to them mishandling sure tools and going by way of different conditions in methods outdoors of regular protocol. Civil rights activists are working onerous to finish the federal authorities’s observe of giving army weapons to untrained police departments.
Supply: Pixabay
When individuals break the legislation, they undoubtedly should be punished. However generally, punishment isn’t one of the best answer. That is very true for drug addicts. Typically, when somebody is caught with medication, they’re despatched to jail or jail. Medication are nonetheless accessible in these conditions as a consequence of inter-prison buying and selling. What some individuals really want is therapy applications so that they don’t discover themselves again behind bars. This holds true for these with psychological well being points as effectively.
Supply: Pixabay
Whether or not or not you suppose smoking marijuana is an effective factor, certainly you must consider that it’s not proper for some individuals to take a seat behind bars for years and years only for having a joint of their pocket. And but, many individuals nonetheless have been in jail for as much as eight years only for having two joints within the pocket of their denims. Fortunately, many authorities officers know that that is unjust, and we’re getting nearer to the decriminalization of marijuana each day.
Supply: Pixabay
This goes together with physique cameras, however one factor that must be achieved is that we accumulate extra knowledge about who police are literally policing. Typically, they do occur to have a racial biased in direction of African Individuals, however till we begin conserving observe of each cease and frisk, we don’t have a lot different proof that police are focusing on individuals of colour. For those who do random searches on anybody, there’s likelihood you would possibly discover one thing unlawful. Nonetheless, police goal African Individuals, leading to extra individuals of colour being put behind bars.
Supply: Pixabay
When the police commit crimes, don’t they should be punished as a lot as a daily civilian who would possibly commit the identical crime? When a police officer shoots an unarmed African American, they’re placed on paid go away. If an African American will get caught with a gram of weed, they might face time in jail. There must be a reform to this unjust felony system.
Supply: Pixabay
Bear in mind Brock Turner? When he was convicted of raping a girl behind a dumpster, he was labeled within the media as “The Stanford Swimmer.” When an harmless African American will get shot, whereas they’re unarmed, their mugshot from 20 years in the past is used within the media. This racist reporting has a reasonably detrimental affect on society’s view of individuals of colour, however fortunately, some publications are lastly realizing this and altering the best way they write.
Supply: Pixabay
We make investments extra money in prisons than we do colleges. Lecture rooms are closing each day whereas jail cells are opening. How can we count on to lift an informed society after we’re extra involved with earning profits from prisoners? There must be extra of an emphasis on training than criminalization on this nation.
Supply: Pixabay
As soon as somebody is put in jail, they’ll lose every little thing. What we’d like are applications in jail and extra applications accessible for criminals after they get out. After we take away an individual’s rights and financials, they typically find yourself again in jail. As an alternative, we’d like training and housing for many who had been put in jail to assist guarantee they by no means return.
Supply: Pixabay
There are particular legal guidelines that we simply can’t management, even in our democratic society. Don’t you suppose that insurance policies affecting a whole metropolis needs to be determined by greater than only a couple white guys? Not solely is that this necessary, however we’d like a greater technique to give and obtain suggestions about police as effectively. Fortunately, civil rights activists are working onerous to vary the best way our authorities guidelines.
Supply: Pixabay
Prisons are clearly an enormous challenge in our nation, particularly prisons that exist solely to achieve a revenue. If you run a jail like a enterprise, you may have individuals working tougher to keep up a big inhabitants of incarcerated people, as that leads to extra earnings. This additionally means slicing prices to save cash and slicing prices leads to lower-quality dwelling conditions in an already horrendous scenario.
Supply: Pixabay
All of this stuff that individuals are preventing for each day are nice, however nothing will really change till we get everybody to know the problems in our nation. Many instances, individuals wish to faux there aren’t issues when there are literally a lot of them. The easiest way to higher your neighborhood if you don’t understand how is to hearken to others and discover understanding and compassion for people from throughout.

barefoot in the park cast
Barefoot SKINNERS I have to acknowledge to personally and runnings are not by far the most appropriate friends. If Forest Gump had been a gazelle, I'd become a silverback gorilla! In proclaiming that, running has long been within or there about with my training. A few years ago right after a spell of constant lower back pain, one of the things I considered had been the sneakers I had been wearing, which started an intro with the without footwear minimalist shoe. I've used minimalist shoes since that time. I just fulfilled operating coach David Chamberlain and questioned him would he mind offering us the low on minimal and without footwear jogging (& I'll do the 2013 Sydney Area to Search.. Yikes!). And of course, when you acquired inquiries or feelings, we'd like to pick up within the remarks area under. Enjoy. Over to David What exactly is without footwear and normal running and where does the concept are derived from? Given that the development of padded, very helpful, current day shoes and boots, we certainly have altered the way you manage. We've transitioned clear of our 'hunter-gatherer' fashion to your less all-natural and more 'manufactured' means of running. By working without footwear, we successfully 're-set' our fashion, delivering it nearer to the way we are in a natural way made to run. Including: running relaxed having an vertical physique position; impressive the earth with the forefoot straight within the hips; yanking up and running; leaning through the legs and getting relatively brief, speedy strides. In its finest form, barefoot working is simply that - jogging without having boots in any way. This raises the quantity of comments or proprioception we obtain from the ground and permits us to modify and optimize our running develop based on the landscape we have been on. This can even be achieved, to a a bit reduced diploma, by putting on minimalist running footwear. The idea comes from the essential concepts of development. The body, and also in specific our toes, have become amazing components that are designed to soak up jolt, create motion, flex and flex. By offering them frequent help and cushioning, we diminish them and slow down them from doing anything they are meant to do. Is it merely the most up-to-date craze or is it grounded in medical reality? I might ask exactly the same issue of modern time, padded running footwear. There isn't just one scientific review demonstrating that running injuries have reduced considering that their launch within the 1960's. Evolutionary Biologist Dr. Daniel Lieberman proposes that it's the shoes which are the trend and without footwear or minimalist working will be the evolutionary usual. Lieberman has executed a variety of scientific studies checking out the distinct degrees of affect on our bodies when operating barefoot compared to running in padded boots. He constantly discovered that most of without footwear runners property on the forefoot. As a result, they don't produce a direct impact 'spike' on getting which, amidst other rewards, leads to reduce amounts of pressure and stress on the knee joints minimizing back again. Is Without shoes Jogging Hazardous? Running is really a expertise and like any expertise, it needs to be acquired. Take a wearing activity including fishing. If you don't learn to go swimming correctly, swimming is harmful. If you don't discover ways to swing a pot bell properly, kettle bell swings are hazardous. Although barefoot and normal working offers the possible ways to lead to traumas, it's no distinct to any other competent physical exercise. It takes some perserverance to formulate the relevant skills required to grasp it, but performed correctly the risks of trauma and linked danger are reduced. Is without shoes working ideal for anyone or what are the considerations? While everyone can do running barefoot or perhaps in a minimal footwear, there is absolutely no one sizing matches all design. Shifting to the design will place a lot more anxiety inside the muscle tissues from the lower thighs, gluteus and hamstrings. Furthermore, it places better levels of stress in the muscle groups, ligament and your bones with your toes. In case you have a record of Achilles tendon troubles, restricted lower-leg muscle tissues, inadequate leg or huge toe range of motion or a record of foot bone injuries, you must advancement quite little by little and look for suggestions and analysis from your without shoes and natural running specialist. How do you know if it's going to be suited to me? The initial question to inquire about oneself is the reason do you want to consider without shoes and normal running? In case you are a thick soled trainer using back heel striker who's happy with their working times rather than receives injured, a purchase required to transition may well not make sense. If you do decide to go without shoes, make sure you take into account your injury record, operating objectives, lower-leg and ft . energy and foot, hip and thoracic backbone mobility. At DC Operate, there exists a number of professional without footwear and organic running mentors who can get you using an evaluation to determine if it's good for you. They can also develop an appropriate cross over software to make sure you teach properly and reduce the risk of trauma. Although you may make a decision it's not for you, many of the type and strength concepts of without shoes and all-natural operating will assist you to get you to a more robust, more efficient athlete. Is it as simple as removing your footwear or buying a set of 'Five Fingers' and heading out for the work? Within a term, 'no!' To be able to properly alteration to running without footwear or with minimalist boots, you have to development little by little. This progression ought to include a number of particular power, equilibrium, flexibility and conditioning drills. These needs to be predominantly targeted around the ft, reduce thighs and legs and also the muscles that support and stabilize the pelvis. After you've learned the basic principles, you need to start by training serious leg squats, bypassing (jumping rope), strolling and running short distance on different landscape, progressively upping your operate length over time.
