i've seen seen people point out that the ffnet thing is probably not a spoofing thing but some weird misdirection/sign of admin indifference, so I'm backing up a few more of my fics tonight. Site still works fine atm. It takes so lonnnng to copy everything ugh. And re-reading things I wrote when I was 14 is, uh, good for the ego??? ^.^''

As long as the site isn't gone, I think that's the main thing. If ff.net goes, I don't know if I would have the mental energy to repost anything fanfic related. Which is terrifying (sort of freeing 😬). I, uh, downloaded what's posted of SLTS to save it (even though it's also saved in Scrivener but sometimes I tweak the ff.net version so I wanted a fresh draft of that) and I crashed my secondary word processor so that's going great 🙈.

Also YES! It's fascinating to see how much our writing has changed - like yeah, I cringe at what I wrote at 17 or so, but also, I should cringe. If I don't, have I improved at all? Not just in terms of writing, technique and plotting, but in terms of thinking and my world views as well. It's nice to realise I've had that growth, but also it would be nice to not have the start of one fic be so vastly different to the more recent chapters.

But yeah, like you I'm gonna try to salvage some things for posterity and so that I don't have a total panic session the next time the site blips. (Also if we could have a nice way to extract reviews, that would also be awesome, because realistically that's the main thing I want kept from that site).

Shit, the site’s like a prehistoric land and the long loading screen ain’t helping one bit…

The “communities” are basically fic collections, not looking like actual user groups. *Tumbleweed rolls due to lack of activity yet the users don’t wanna delete them or basically forgot about their existence.*

Unfortunately, loads of deleted fics from the early 2010s and before can’t be rediscovered even by the internet archives and fic downloaders.

Wattpad:

Yeesh, most of them hate fics are more childish and nonsensical than AO3’s hate fics… uh oh, looks like they get way more attention than the non-bashing fics…

Even if you found the link, went through your notifications or even saved a few things, a few or some fics can’t be found again… or were heavily edited instead of the writer creating a new version. 😔 sad… you wanna remember the fic but it’s slowly fading away from your memory… too bad most fic downloader sites don’t have the Wattpad option due to legality or smth…

At least you can delete your comment thou you can’t edit it… so it’s a step up from FFN.

Ugh… I wish the tag filtering was as simple as tumblr’s so I don’t get an aneurysm from seeing my most hated ships and franchises/series while looking for good reading. That’s why I use Google and other users from different sites who have similar tastes like mine just to find the fic or refresh my memories.

Despite most users being more mature than the two sites combined, you’ve got the occasional rabid stan being an adamant character defender whilst shitting on everyone else or just being killjoys.

Fics made by Anons, hmm… are they that ashamed to post it on their online username? I get if it’s a mature/explicit type where shit happens but Gen/teen when it’s sfw? Uh…

Oh lord, this user writes a fic of wholesome family bonding but looking at their bookmarks/favorites says otherwise! Like what?? It may not be blood i#c3st but it’s still disgusting! Closeted b@tc3st shippers & ppl shipping parental/familial figure mentors with their students! No wonder I quietly unfavorited and unfollowed several fics! Same goes for artists or any user online! #wasted talent

there's multiple lol ausgshdhsgggsgsh I say that cringe culture is dead but I never truly effectively killed cringe

From my unposted Werewedzel and 3Adv + Werewedzel fics, to the stuff like my many many fluffy Kyle and Larry fics (one which I can't look at anymore because of a critique I received that made me very insecure ausghsgs (dw it was somebody irl it wasn't anybody here)), I have a lot of cringe-

🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?

Ok so all that stuff you learned in school? Throw it out the diddly darn window (but save it later for the editing process, maybe. Look, the English language isn't perfect and occasionally you just have to Return To Monky so that you can make it sound good like in your head.)

Don't be afraid to just straight up cut-and-paste a whole chunk of your writing if it just "isn't sounding right" because maybe you can make it sound different! It's the art equivalent of "you've been staring at this too long, go take a break and come back to it later." Cut the section and paste it in like,, another document (or move it to the bottom of the fic in a method I like to call The Pit) and rewrite it purely from memory.

😬 Which of your fics would you be most horrified for friends, family, or coworkers to stumble upon?

Depends, I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Werewedzel, probably? Literally only out of fear of furry shaming (despite the fact I am very openly accepting that yeah I am a furry lol)
