HMTQ The long wait …………

The road going up to Windsor Castle is called The Long Walk. Because of Covid, her Majesty the Queen , will no longer at this point be going to Buckingham Palace. Hence the reason for yesterday’s riddle clue that 250 BP staff are being made redundant. So she has spent all this time at Windsor Castle and is looking forward to going to Balmoral. As far as I’ve heard, that has not been cancelled. I’ve checked again today and I can’t see anywhere where it’s been cancelled. It will be a long wait for her to see what happens , what is the outcome of this Covid as to whether she can ever go back to Buckingham palace and ever resume any sort of duties that she’s been doing for her whole life! I ache for her, it must hurt her to the core because that’s what she’s committed to and it’s so it’s so upsetting.

MM ANON Very much enjoys using the Star Trek reference of Jim that line from Star Trek is Spock but not as we knew him. So in the UK outdoor pools can open July 11 and on July 25 indoor pools and gyms and the like can open then. So yes they will be gyms and they will be open but not as we knew them before. They will be of course social distancing hand sanitizing smaller classes all of the usual bells and whistle’s that go along with the our new normal. I think people will just be glad to get back to their workouts and get out of the house and connecting with people even though they’re 6 feet away or 2 m or one meat or whatever the social distance will be at that time it’ll just be good for everybody physically and emotionally.

But more than that though, how young beautiful people who are so talented just absolutely waste their lives and how abusive people are. I just find it so sad.

The international Olympic committee has been battling with this issue. They have been trying to decide whether or not they will allow or penalize athletes for any demonstration of taking a knee or raising a fist or anything like that. The whole point of the Olympics is to unite the world in the form of athletics it’s kind of a diplomatic effort if you will like. Do you want to kind of be like “Switzerland” but they were a neutral in these kind of political issues. They are there for the sport and for the sake of the sport in and healthy competition not for political opinions and protests. So last I heard and have read they haven’t made a permanent decision about that yet. I know it’s been on the docket for quite some time and they’ll have to make a decision one way or the other. And I think either either way they go in making decisions I will be very upset people on both sides.

Various places are making various plans for back to school in September. The general consensus is the children need to get back to school even out of school for five months and many are falling behind. There are also many children who who miss nutrition if they’re not at school and as we have read and heard about there’s been an increase in addiction increase in domestic violence and that sort of thing and just the change of routine and structure am just been very detrimental to everybody but especially our most vulnerable children. And so part of the expectation will be and I think we need to all look at this going forward is that we will be wearing masks for a very long time. Some articles say this will be the new normal. Some scientists say Covid19 and the like, will never leave us. Going forward this will be our new normal in terms of social distancing in the plastic screens by the tills and between tables and restaurants and mask and all that sort of thing.

Finally sweet finally team sports are resuming. This weekend the cricket resumes and they are trialling a rather interesting thing of course there won’t be an audience but they are trialling putting loud cheers in and the audio as if there was a crowd present, to see if that makes a difference in how the players play. I think that’s a really interesting thing to do. We do know in sports how much the the athletes feed off the energy of the crowd and vice versa it’s all a very what’s the word pause visceral experience he kind of cheering and screaming and yelling when you get out all your frustrations while you’re cheering for your favourite team and it’s a it’s a healthy experience all the way around!

Well if you’re looking for a holiday they are suggesting anything but cruising! It is always a high-risk activity anyway because there’s so much food on display all the time and there’s all you always hear about food poisoning and bouts of people getting ill on cruise ships from that reason. Now adding Covid19 to the equation, just don’t 🚢cruise! That’s the recommendation and actually I’m quite surprised they’re even doing cruises but I guess they need money so badly that they’ll take whatever bookings they can get.

There have been a number of young actors suffer from that show that have perished. A young woman by the name of Naya Rivera, her baby child was found in a boat today and the assumption is that she jumped and she drowned herself in the water. This weekend would’ve been the finals at Wimbledon. Today Catherine made a call and she look absolutely gorgeous in green I went to post that to my blog this morning. I made a snarky comment I said soon as that was posted we can expect the next video of Madam should be the same hairstyle as she’s madly looking for a green dress with athletes is on it and a bow that Catherine space was wearing on her left chest.

Catherine was kind of cheeky in how she presented her special guest. It was just her first and then she so cutely told them in the children as who’s are somebody special here with me and it turned out to be so Andy Murray so I needless to say everybody was very excited. They spent time talking about tennis and different strategies that sort of thing. The children also got to ask Catherine questions and then came around to their families and the lockdown. And law enforcement found that to be very effective in stopping some crimes. But that of course was done away with because human rights and all that stuff. So it stop and search was also used in the UK under the lockdown. 22,000 people have been stopped and searched. Now with Black Lives Matter and all the other issues are a cry a racial discrimination has been heard. Yes yes yes the ability to go to the beach has been returned and they are taking full advantage of it by not going back home I just saw her sleeping on the beach. At a vegetable farm in Herefordshire, a large outbreak of COVID-19 has occurred amongst the seasonal workers. 73 people have been confirmed positive of having COVID-19.. Just something that has been quietly going on behind the scenes for years for decades we saw I have seen it in minor hockey in Canada and junior hockey players in the NHL have come out or written books about their sexual abuse when they were young men. Customers can leave directly without seeing a cashier and the card linked to their Amazon account will automatically be charged. I told you last week of the what’s the word quarantine at the vegetable farm in Herefordshire. I think I also mentioned that they were being guarded by police so know that none of them believe and I believe at the time 73 of the hundred workers have tested positive. Well yesterday I read they were being offered free cigarettes and alcohol to comply with staying in quarantine. But here I see that’s four of them have managed to escape the luxury life of life in a trailer with free booze and free ciggies!! So the police are actually actively looking for them at this time. Because it is last week they were seasonal workers in today in the paper it seems most of them are from Eastern Europe. So I’m not sure that you’re thinking they’re going to try and make a run for going home or I wonder who has their passports with their employer hold their passports and I’m not sure.

Ch 4-  The Great Viper

Artemisia's limb throbbed with each step; the wound on her leg had begun to knit itself closed. She'd walked for roughly two hours in the hot sun, resting her drakon form for the flight she would be forced to take shortly. All of her former plans being ruined by a bandit group rubbed her the wrong way. The drakon is fierce. They shouldn't struggle against humans, not nearly as much as she had. Thinking of the altercation, a lot of things didn't make sense.

While it was usual to run into bandits at the forest entrance or on marked paths people visited for items, this group was deep inside the forest. They also had an experienced mage, one that could cast spells quickly. Yet, something felt wrong; it was almost as they knew Artemisia would travel through the woodlands. She had been traveling slower than usual; when she encountered the group just sitting in the clearing, they made no move to stand when she appeared. When she stepped foot inside the clearing, she felt weakened, as if invisible shackles were tied to her arms and legs. It must've been planned from the beginning to kill her.

But why? Had Anaidid kingdom found out about the scouts?

If so, the situation was worst than thought; she had made the right decision to waste no time. When the kingdom found out she was not executed, they would send reinforcement to finish the job. She walked four more hours before something appeared; an enormous red viper landed on the ground in front of her. This one was bigger than usual and had a black underbelly, which meant it had evolved into a queen viper. Artemisia evaluated the situation. The queen viper was notorious for its poison fangs; if she got caught, she would be paralyzed and eaten alive. Pulling out her sword, she braced herself.

Orpheus walked after Artemisia, cautious not to draw recognition. When Artemisia had walked away before, she had been jolted. She decided to run to her home and gather a few items she knew she'd need and follow Artemisia closely. While Orpheus knew she had gotten far, she could tell which direction she went just by a sense of knowing.

I could walk with her until she stops in a village, then I will learn about this world.

The pain she felt before had disappeared, replaced by excitement and trepidation of the new world. During her time on Earth, Orpheus had been limited to where she could go. For 15 years of her life, she had only known the small town of Dorchester. Now she would be able to explore the world as she pleased.

The snake slithered toward her opening its enormous jaws. Artemisia lunged left and attempted to stab through the snake. Unfortunately, her wound had reopened, beginning to bleed profusely again. This caused the snake to become more aggressive, its attacks quicker. She dodged the oncoming snake again, feinting left then going right. This was bad; she'd already felt weakened from the fight with the bandits, breathing heavily; she tried to stab the eye of the viper in hopes of blinding it but was too slow and ended puncturing higher, enraging the beast.

Orpheus had been strolling, thinking of all the types of food she could try when she heard fighting. Then, sneaking a peek through the bushes, she saw the largest Ruby she'd ever faced. Fighting it was none other than Artemisia, sweating and breathing heavily, swinging her great sword. Looking through the Homemade satchel he'd made from viper and boar skin, he tried to find the cherished item he had brought with him. It was a Dual-edged and razor-sharp sword that he'd stolen off a boar, a reasonably short, broad, smooth blade made of folded steel. The cross-guard contained a decorative bear head on each side, marking the house it previously belonged to. The pommel was a shining aquamarine gem. Several words that looked like spells she couldn't read had been etched onto the blade.

She set her bag down and decided the element of surprise would work in her favor. Looking at the nearest sturdiest-looking tree, she began to climb it. Glancing down, she saw Artemisia stagger to her feet. Then, turning into a Drakon, she roared and began her ferocious attack again. Orpheus was amazed at the scene below. The power between both monsters could probably be felt through the entirety of the forest. Artemisia looked up at Orpheus; she didn't know whether to feel annoyed the girl still followed her or relieved she had not listened.

The snake ran towards her gnashing its fangs; while tiny compared to fully adult drakon, Artemisia was big for her age. Her stature was the reason she could grapple with the giant snake. Glancing back up at Orpheus, she noticed the girl gripping a great sword instead of a stick. This glance caused the snake to gain the upper hand. Constricting Artemisia, it was readying to bite when it died. Orpheus had dropped from the trees, stabbing it in the back of its head. Orpheus was delighted her decision had saved Artemisia just in the time. Beaming, she looked at the dragon. Even in Drakon form, Orpheus could tell Artemisia was annoyed by her not listening. The Drakon began to unravel the snake from itself. Stretching it then became Artemisia again.

 With a sullen look Artemisia couldn’t help but feel upset .”You've saved me again; how embarrassing.” 

The shame she felt from not once but twice being saved by a mere human made her stomach knot. At only 250 years old, Artemisia was ignorant and had looked upon any being, not Drakon. Now she could see her lapse of judgment. This girl name Orpheus seemed stronger than her, and this caused an epiphany to strike her heart. She would take Orpheus with her and learn how she had become strong so young.

“I have changed my voice; I will allow you to accompany me to my village. Surely they will let you in when they hear that you've saved me twice.”

Orpheus nodded and walked back to gather her satchel. Then, remembering the potion Artemisia gave her, she grasped it and handed it to Artemisia.

“Here for your wounds”

Artemisia looked at the vial, drinking half, and tried to hand it back to Orpheus. Turning to face Orpheus, she was amazed at the display. Orpheus was again huddled, clutching her stomach as if it pained her so. Was she wounded during the battle? Perhaps that's why Artemisia heard her shriek and stumble to the ground during the match. Why did she not drink the drunin? As annoying as the girl was, Artemisia did not want to watch someone who helped her die. Orpheus groaned with agony sweating and saying the exact phrase monotonously.

“not now, no, not now, why now, no, not now”

Worried, Artemisia began to walk towards her when she noticed something strange happening to the trees. They bent towards her and Orpheus; she had never seen something like this before. Terrified, she tried to grab Orpheus and run away. However, when she touched Orpheus, her heart sputtered. An intense feeling of wrongness came from Orpheus; Artemisia felt the instinct to run from her. Was she the one bending the trees? Why? Backing away, she kept her gaze on Orpheus; while she didn't think she'd harm her to be cautious, she drew her sword and waited for a sign of aggressiveness.

Manipulation?

Artemisia tried to think of a reason the once sunny girl was emitting evilness. She was confused about what triggered her. On the last occasion, she was fighting as well.

Maybe fights caused her bloodlust?

Artemisia had witnessed countless drakons get sucked into bloodlust and go on rampages; the only way to snap them out of it was to defeat them; this usually ended in death; drakons were prideful creatures and never willingly yielded.

When the smell of blood hit Orpheus, it made her realize how hungry she'd been. The burning in her head and stomach came back full strength, knocking her to her knees. She had just won Artemisia's trust; why now did she have to become rabid. Usually, Orpheus would go out early in the morning to check her traps. Still, she was interrupted by Artemisia's screech this morning. She never investigated the pitfalls. While she ate less with more time, she could not forgo food too long like a newborn. Peering up, she noticed through her vision blurred with tears the stance artemisia had taken. She stood grimacing with pain and looked for her fallen satchel; turning the bag over, she shook it, emptying the contents onto the dirt floor. Grabbing the reddish-orange fruit, she ate it with savagery, not even taking the time to relish the rare sweetness only known as yio-yio fruit.

Not enough, not enough, not enough ...

Something in her head repeated this; looking at the snake, she dropped the fruit's carcass, grabbed her sword, and marched toward its corpse. Raising the sword, she clumsily dug a hole into the snake. Oblivious of Artemisia watching her chop the snake, her focus solely on the meal in front of her. Dropping the sword, she dug her hands into the corpse and began to eat the animal's lukewarm meat and organs. Blood dyed her hands and face, the already stained and tattered toga taking the worst as the blood dripped down her chin. She could feel the strength returning to her. Sighing with delight, she closed her eyes and bit into the second heart of the Ruby.

Artemisia watched in awe; she didn't know humans could eat meat raw. She watched as Orpheus stuck her hand back into the creature pulling on another bloody organ. The scene in front of her was grisly, but she couldn't tear her eyes away. She was not used to humans; this being one of the first times paying attention to them, she felt like she didn't know a lot about them. Her first mission felt like a big success; she could tell the king many things, like how humans could also eat raw meat. She was also perplexed.

“Human, is today a special day for you?” Asked Artemisia, Orpheus seemed not to hear her question continuing to eat the meat with both hands.

Drakons only ate meat when the day was special to them or their tribe. Artemisia remembered when the tribe won back land from the Ruhu Drakon tribe. She and her family feasted on expensive raw Thornhand meat and danced the entire night away. Or the other reason would be they had no other options of food. To Artemisia, Orpheus looked like a young orphan or laborer.

That must be it, then! On the other hand, maybe she has gone a long time without food.

That didn't explain the feeling she felt when grasping Orpheus. She knew she felt something dark. The time before that, she also felt a dark aura in Orpheus that quickly dissipated.

Orpheus feel content, she ate more than intended, but her pain finally left. Looking down, she could see she did a number to her dress. Sighing, she turned and looked at the discarded items on the floor. Spotting the Skin flask, she picked it up and began to wash her face and hands. Standing again, she turned to pick up the sword a few feet away.  Doing so, she remembered the audience she had and turned to stare in horror at Artemisia, who was gazing at her intently.

Property market Bali in 2019 and beyond – 2/2 - This is the second of two blogs about where we think Bali’s property market has been heading over the last couple of years. Now it’s time to revisit and look at what 2019 and beyond have in store. Adapting to change Many years ago the Javanese arrived in Bali and took over from the Bali Aga (the island’s indigenous people) who, themselves were originally from China. Today, many non-Balinese Indonesians are moving here along with expats from all over the world. Bali has always been a place embracing change (any place that doesn’t adapt eventually stagnates and dies) but it’s happening a lot faster than in the past and with greater impact. It’s all of our responsibility to deal with this in a way that creates the best solutions for as many as possible, and not just for a select few. Let’s look at some interesting facts and historical aspects, some of which may not be to everyone’s liking, but they’re all meant to highlight issues for a better future for us all. Land, developments and investments Land is being bought for developments and investments (mainly by Indonesians) and it’s happening quickly. Cliff Front land for sale in Pecatu The result is the Balinese are worried that soon they may not have any land of their own and their ancestors (leluhur) will be upset. It’s no secret, however, that some Balinese do gain tremendously on current land speculations even though they may be the ones complaining of upsetting ancestors! What triggers this speculation is economic growth and potential and, unfortunately, greed. But as time goes on the world seems to be waking up to the fact that an old fashioned capitalist mindset is out of date and needs to change. There are other modules out there and even big investment firms are talking about environmental and community impact as much as they are about profits. But back to the core issue. Land in Canggu for example, especially around the hot spots of Berawa and Batu Bolong, is being used for commercial activities and is largely owned by the Banjar or locals. Some years ago you could rent land here for next to nothing, but now the same plots are easily rented for up to IDR 60 million per Are (10 x 10-square meters) per year. Try to find a commercial spot to rent for a shop or café for less than IDR 200 million a year and you’ll see what I mean. Now people are ‘buying’ leases so they can sub-lease for capital gain. Who benefits from this? In financial terms, it’s clearly the local community. Stronger tax collection also ensures the government gets its fair share. There’s also a huge need for labor, and skilled labor especially raises salaries. This, in turn, creates better opportunities for both local Balinese and Indonesians to decide their own futures. Is this necessarily a bad thing? Tourism, property, creative economiesProperty market Bali The truth is, Bali’s economy is driven by tourism and property development … more than 80 percent, in fact. And what really needs to happen is for the island to develop alternative industries and income streams that can enhance and support these economic pillars. If it’s managed correctly nobody gets left behind. Visitor arrivals Some argue markets have slowed. But in 2018 foreign visitor arrivals increased by just over 10 percent on 2017’s numbers. Official statistics from Badung Regency Tourism Office show the number of arrivals at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport in 2018 reached 6,511,610 while domestic visitors reached almost 10-million. If you take these growing visitor numbers and imagine all of these people stayed in villas and double-occupancy rooms with an average stay of about four nights, then divide the number of rooms needed per night by the number of hotels available (with an average of 250-rooms) you soon realize the growth of hotels is not keeping up with demand. What about the price war? Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a Price War as being “characterized by the repeated cutting of prices below those of competitors” and by that definition, there really isn’t a price war. This is not necessarily the case in Kuta and Legian however. The problem they face isn’t the number of rooms available but what’s on offer. According to OTA’s like Booking.com, global tourism is moving to experiential travel and more Eco-friendly tourism and that’s something Kuta and Legian struggle with. The villa market in Bali - Property market Bali Prices and occupancies in the villa market, however, are going down. I think this is largely because villas in Bali have become too dependent on OTA’s, booking engines and so-called management companies who don’t really know what to do in terms of delivering on the customer experience. Stunning Cliff Top Luxury Villa In Pandawa I predict things will change dramatically as we move forward and that change will not include the OTA’s … at least not in their present form. It’s important to remember that OTA’s and booking engines charge a percentage of the room night as a fee to the villa for the privilege of being in their global network and on their database. Nothing wrong with that really, except the fee they charge can be between 15 – 25% and can reach as high as 30% and that will hit the price the customer pays. With that in mind, remember too that most people will use the ‘price’ filter on these booking engines to look for the best deals, so keeping prices in the sensible part of realistic, while still being able to effectively manage a property and keep standards and customer experiences high, becomes more difficult. Some booking engines are trying to change this but at the end of the day, this is down to each individual owner and management to change. With the current potential of social media, it’s possible for a villa to stand out and find its own niche market. And those that do so win twice because they’ll be able to reduce prices to more realistic levels and in so doing draw more business. Different rules for different folks? -Property market Bali It is true that there appear to be different rules for different people. For example, maybe Wayan has a hotel, which he or she built on tourism zoned land, as rules and regulations demand. He (or she) is doing well and his next-door neighbor, Made wants a slice of the same pie. Made applies for the licenses to operate a hotel but is refused. How can this be? Has Made got a foreign partner? Has Wayan paid someone in the licensing department to protect his own interests? Maybe. We know both have been happening, but we believe this is a thing of the past because a protective mindset is just not possible in these days of globalization. Indonesia has recently signed several significant trade agreements with Australia and members of ASEAN as well as other non-EU countries. This will soon start having an impact as foreign investors will find it easier to set up here and gain benefits from a financial/tax point of view. Some would say it’s all to do with a corrupt government. I would agree that in the past this was partly true. But it’s also to do with a corrupt market with investors, domestic and expat alike, not wanting to follow regulations, pay taxes or think long-term for the benefit of the people in whose land they live and do business. They are like characters in the movie “Die Hard” holding on to an already gone past. But the governments of Bali and Indonesia are changing a lot faster than we think. The more we cling on to the way things ‘used to be’ the worse it will be for Bali. What are the solutions? First is to prioritize. Government, infrastructure, garbage, and water should be the main focus of our attention. When they are, we all need to come together with solutions, not just criticisms. Melati and Isabel Wijsen, from Bali’s Green School, have been campaigning to ban plastic bags locally and reduce the impact of plastic waste globally. Do a little every day, impact a little every day. Again look at what was possible with plastic bags! Can we do a similar thing with water? Many have already started. The Refill My Bottle campaign is a fine example of how to creatively deal with a plastic problem as well as being more mindful about water. What can you do? We need long term solutions. We need to realize that what has started cannot be stopped. We (as in you and me) can decide where we take Bali’s tourism … together. We need to focus on words and initiatives around being Eco-friendly, encouraging upmarket and integrated tourism, implementing real spatial and urban planning with better and more consistent zoning. The Indonesian and Balinese governments are certainly trying to focus on these things and they deserve our support. Everyone developing and operating villas, resorts, restaurants, shops, whatever it is; we all gain from this and it’s our responsibility to drive this in the right direction. I personally think Bali is finding its way and will still be that unique place that touches us all so deeply in so many different ways. As processions of pink, 'pussy' hats and illustrations asking for him to be impeached made their way through the nation's many cities, Trump ignored their complaints about him and said: 'Beautiful weather all over our great country, a perfect day for all Women to March.  'Get out there now to celebrate the historic milestones and unprecedented economic success and wealth creation that has taken place over the last 12 months.  'Lowest female unemployment in 18 years!'   The marches mark a year since the first march and coincide with President Trump's one year anniversary in office. This year, the marches also take on the momentum of the Me Too and Time's Up movements against sexual misconduct which were sparked with allegations against Hollywood heavyweights last year.  Scroll down for video

Philadelphia: Thousands were in the street in central Philadelphia on Saturday for the march, their pink signs visible for miles  They also coincide with a government shutdown.  The marches were well underway by the time the president chimed in. His remarks angered many and sent others into despair.  'You just don't get it, do you?' was the reply of one exasperated critic.  Many questioned whether the president himself actually wrote the tweet. 'One thing about this tweet is that it absolutely wasn't written by Trump (vocabulary and phrasing different) so someone else is using his account purely to troll,' said one critic.  Our work isn't done... there's so much more that we need to to fix Tanaquil Eltson, 14, at the Washington DC march  On Saturday, Trump was stuck in Washington DC, grounded by the overnight government shutdown, and unable to fly to Mar-a-Lago to attend a celebratory anniversary party to which tickets were sold at $100,000 each.  Sources inside the White House said he was 'upset' he would likely miss the event which he was referring to as 'my party', according to The Daily Beast.   Some 250 cities across the world were planning to play host to some form of Women's March on Saturday.  Many of the protests were directed towards Trump's immigration policies and his plans for DACA which shut down the government on Friday night when Democrats refused to move forward with talks.   In Rome, Asia Argento led a group of marchers through the city. Argento was the first woman to go on the record to accuse the disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein of rape in October.  Countless women followed with claims against the 65-year-old.   'People were pretty damn mad last year and they're pretty damn mad this year,' said Tamika Mallory, co-president of the Women's March board.

Stars including Jane Fonda and Padma Lakshmi spoke at a rally in Park City, Utah, where many actors are gathered for the Sundance Film Festival Like last year, thousands of marchers donned pink knit 'pussy hats', which were created last year after the president's infamous 'grab them by the p***y' hot mic remark was made public.  They became a symbol for the disdain thousands of women carried and still harbor against the president. At Saturday's marches, celebrities acted as guest speakers, particularly in Park City, Utah, where many are attending the Sundance Film Festival.  Jane Fonda spoke at the event and was joined by Miley Cyrus, the rapper Common and a host of other stars.  Whoopi Goldberg joined led the stars in New York City. She was joined at the march by Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill De Blasio.  Among those in Saturday's crowds elsewhere in the country were thousands who attended last year's marches.  In Los Angeles, Scarlett Johansson addressed the crowds.   Fourteen-year-old Tanaquil Eltson marched with her mother in Washington DC.  She said: 'We went to the first women's march, but we feel like our work isn't done and that there's so much more that we need to fix.  

Whoopi Goldberg spoke in New York City and celebrity attorney Gloria Allred attended the rally in Park City. She is in Utah to celebrate a forthcoming Netflix documentary about her

New York City: People take part in the Women's March in Manhattan in New York City, New York, on January 20, 2018 The biggest marches are expected on Saturday in Washington and New York, with 10,000 and 37,000 people signed up on their respective Facebook pages.  Bu the number of participants is likely to fall well short of the estimated 5 million who marched on Jan. 21. 2017 and made that one of the largest mass protests in U.S. history.  Despite the more modest expectations this year, organizers hope to build on the raw energy felt by Trump opponents immediately after his surprise election victory and channel it into gains for progressive candidates in November's midterm elections, using the theme 'Power to the Polls.' Specifically, organizers want to register a million new voters and get more strong advocates for women's rights into office. Activists say Trump's policies rolling back birth control and equal pay protections have propelled many women into activism for the first time. A White House spokesman did not respond to a request for comment on the marches.

Chicago: There were crowds in Chicago which held up signs calling for a change to immigration policies and DACA in addition to messages of female empowerment  Some critics said this year's march lacked a focus. Targeting an issue such as immigration would have greater impact, said Shikha Dalmia, a senior analyst at the Reason Foundation, a libertarian think tank. 'Beating the feminist drum just seems to me beside the point. Maybe they are trying to cast as wide a net as possible,' Dalmia said by telephone. The marches will be followed by more events on Sunday, including in Las Vegas, which was chosen by organizers to honor the city where the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history took place last August. Nevada is also a key battleground state in the 2018 midterm elections. The voter registration campaign will target swing states held by Republicans, such as Nevada, and in districts considered a toss-up ahead of November's midterm elections.

Beijing, China My first event as a self-employed Disaster Management Specialist brings me to Beijing. It had been set up by Bournemouth University and part of the United Nations' Development Programme and paid for by DIFD (Department for International Development) and the title of the conference was on Emergency Earthquake Search and Rescue. Before I left - the visa caused me more angst than I would have liked. The obligatory eight pages of complicated forms to fill in, photographs, a list of all the countries visited in the last 10 years (!) and an invitation from the Chinese combined with a three (working) day turnaround requirement added to the last minute panic. At a cost of £250 it all seemed fairly expensive but amazingly all worked out (just!). I was delighted to be referred to as Professor Stileman in all correspondence I'd had sorting the trip out; and I clearly didn't correct them. When I arrived in Beijing I was slightly disappointed that the sign which greeted me in wasn't for 'Professor Stileman', but with the name of the conference I was attending. I was then driven an hour through the Beijing traffic to the hotel. I was informed that with 23 million people (only 7 million in London) and 5 million cars, Beijing is one large car park. Thankfully despite traffic jams, lack of road work warning signs cars switching lanes (& there are a minimum of four lanes on each side of the carriageway) without indication, it's all quiet because honking the horn is illegal. There is a lot of white fluff in the air - apparently this is normal in spring and comes from the willow trees. They are trying to find a way to stop it because some people are 'highly intolerant' of the fluff. When the wind isn't blowing, there is a thick layer of smog sitting over Beijing. China bans a number of websites including google (which means I couldn't receive any of my emails) and Facebook, but also a number of others also blocked. The great firewall of China! I had a fairly quick turnaround at the hotel and jumped in a taxi and made my way to Tienamen Square. This took an hour and was fairly expensive. It seems that using your phone while driving is acceptable demonstrated by my taxi driver who was watching YouTube videos while driving. I didn't get a chance to visit the Forbidden City (by this stage it was too late in the afternoon), but I spent a couple of hours wandering around - and I'm so glad I did because there was no other time off to explore. I was keen to not catch taxi back but used pubic transport. How hard could it be?! There is a lack of English signs around which always adds to the challenge. It did take a bit of guess work and was much more fun. The UN conference started the following day. It consisted of Bangladeshi and Nepalese (& only a small group of Chinese) and me. About 30 people in total. I had to moderate the first session (which was a new experience for me & I had to get advice on how to do this from the legendary Rebekah). The conference room had a translation booth at the back of it. Chinese to English and vice versa. We were all given headphones so could listen to the translation if required. I was amazed by the translators who could listen and translate simultaneously. It was a strange feeling knowing that whatever you were saying was being repeated a few seconds later. I could just about hear it and it was slightly off putting. I was confused when one Chinese man got up to speak; I couldn't work out if he was speaking Chinese or English. I grabbed the translation headphones which were clearly translating it in to Chinese; I couldn't understand a word he was saying. I had been asked to talk about Spontaneous Volunteers in my lecture. Basically, people that turn up to a disaster without any former training and want to help. They themselves can become a disaster if not managed, they clog up the logistics (transport, food, water, communications etc), they require careful organisation and can easily become a victim within the disaster (physically and or mentally). I found the research for this interesting and I was keen to put a positive spin on how to manage them. I spoke (note free - as requested from Bournemouth University) for 45 minutes and then had to fend off some questions (I was absolutely dreading because I wasn't sure I'd understand what they were saying)! The first day of the conference was all lecture based. The next three days consisted of field trips, with hours each day spent on the coach travelling across the city. It was at times, like a school field trip with absolutely no control over the unruly students. One video (attached) is search and rescue expert trying to show us how he uses a chainsaw in a disaster scenario. The translator is doing her best (with her loud speaker which was not very loud) while the majority of the class has wandered off and not paying any attention; utter chaos. Some of the lectures were awful. I've attached a short clip of one. I was doing my very best to look interested, but not always successfully. During the lectures - there was a constant chatting, people were always late; it was quite unlike anything I had experienced before. I had to bite my tongue and ignore all of it; that was hard for me! We did visit to a very interesting visit to a custom built post-earthquake town which was used for training. There was one building which was leaning at 19 degrees. Going inside the building was strange and upset your balance. Stairs going up were actually going down and walls were not where you expected. There was a 4 dimensional cinema - which allowed us to 'experience' an earthquake, much to the screaming delight of the audience. Other visits were not so good and I became slightly fed up with getting fairly insignificant information. However, this was not aimed at me - it was training for the others on the course. There were endless amounts of photographs taken of absolutely everything, there must be some very dull photographs taken back to Nepal and Bangladesh. On the first couple of days, I could feel photographs were being taken of me (some were trying badly to do this surreptitiously), then as we got to know each other - they were being taken blatantly. For example, the ladies would queue up on the coach to sit next to me for a couple of minutes while their friends took their photos. This was done without chatting to me. It was exhausting and did not ease up. Not only were photographs taken, it seems that business cards are the going currency. I slightly dread how many emails I am likely to receive. I may make fake cards for the next trip! Bournemouth University had told me that although the contact rate was rubbish, I would get a small amount of pay (US$500 in total). It all became rather awkward. When I asked when I was getting the money - the Chinese said there was no pay. I was horribly embarrassed asking for it and then having to fight my corner. The Chinese said that there was never an agreement for payment. There had clearly been a mix in communication with Bournemouth (and I couldn't get hold of them to help me out). I was really fed up (& felt like I had totally wasted a week of my life). I think I've managed to sort it out - but it was incredibly uncomfortable but probably the best learning experience for me during the whole trip! I know from experience that burping (men and women) and hoiking (the process of moving flem from the back of your throat to your mouth) and spitting is acceptable in Nepal (& I am quite sure also in Bangladesh). I'm not sure the Chinese were ready for it as the group were making these revolting noises throughout the week (much to my personal amusement!). Presentations would be in full flow and a lady would let out an enormous burp much to the horror of the Chinese; absolutely brilliant!! The use of chopsticks flummoxed them too - and I saw the visitors just dig in to the food as they would at home using their right hand leaving chopsticks to one side. An experience for me and my first trip as a paid Disaster Management Specialist. Not all useful but I'm sure it will add to my experience in the long run.
