Top 5 or 10 moments/events (whichever is easier) in all the "Tales of" you've played

Hmmmmm you're gonna have to keep in mind that I lost my groove of playing Tales Of games last year, thanks to a little thing called ✨ Depression ✨ so it's been a while since I've played the games so I can't remember perfectly everything that happens. Plus I haven't played Phantasia, Eternia, Destiny or Destiny 2 and I'm not even a quarter of the way through Rebirth...

1 - Luke's resolve to change in Tales Of The Abyss

Ngl, I hated Luke in the beginning part of Abyss and I was so close to dropping the game because of how infuriating and bratty he was but my friend who had been on my case to play the game for years kept saying "No, keep playing... Something's gonna happen." And then Akzeriuth happened. I knew something was gonna go bad but I didn't realise how bad it was gonna be. And then everyone turned against him and left him behind. And just... That conversation between him and Tear is so good. So, so good. Like, she wants him to make his own decisions and actually atone for what he did instead of saying he wants to atone and the way he makes a start with speaking with his actions by cutting his hair... It's just such a great scene and that single scene completely flipped my opinion on Luke and I enjoyed the game so much more after that scene.

2 - The Hymn Of Proof from Tales Of Xillia 2

This scene. It hurts me every time I see it. Like, when you learn that to reach Origin (I think that's his name? It's been two years...) You have to sacrifice a Kresnik, you immediately figure out that you have to kill Julius, you have to make Ludger kill his own brother. And just, when he becomes a catalyst and you see his fractured dimension where he just lives a peaceful, everyday life with Ludger, and when our Ludger enters the apartment and Julius just. Immediately understands and accepts what's happening. And that one simple line of "I wish I could have eaten one last pasta margherita" when you know Ludger always made it for him because it's his favourite meal. And then it shows all of their happy memories as the sound completely fades out apart from Julius humming the hymn of proof when Ludger stabs him, with that still being the only thing you can hear while the camera shows Ludger wailing. It's such a well thought out scene and so impactful. Proof? I teared up while writing about it. Also, just wanna add, J. Michael Tatum's performance is so fucking good in this scene.

3 - "Intend to? I already have." From Tales Of Vesperia

Like, I dunno, this scene just perfectly demonstrates the differences between Yuri and Flynn's senses of justice and it's great. Like, I always agreed with Yuri during the story. I mean, yes, Flynn is correct, if Yuri kills them the number of murderers remains the same... However, the number of power hungry bastards who willings torture and endanger entire towns to further their own agendas goes down exponentially so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but the way Flynn says "we need to talk" after Yuri... Has a nice little chat with Cumore, you just know that he knows and there's finally going to be a confrontation between them. But, yeah, I don't know how to describe it, but the exchange of

"Even knowing the consequences, you intend to bloody your hands?"

"Intend to? I already have."

It's just so good and both Troy Baker's and Kousuke Toriumi's delivery of that line is bone chilling. Like, I remember at the time I had really wanted a morally grey protagonist, and Yuri sure did deliver.

4 - "Will you shut up?!" From Tales Of Berseria

I love Tales Of Berseria. I love the found family trope. I love this scene. Like, Velvet is an incredible protagonist and I love how ruthless she is. And Laphicet is such a sweetheart and his development from just a number to his own person is incredible, and this is the scene that really cemented that. Like, Velvet discovers that her revenge was all for nothing and now she's lost her only reason for living so she completely gives up and accepts her death, and then Laphicet comes along and tells her to shut up and stop complaining. The shy little boy who always said sorry is now scolding the woman he found scary. And, like I said before it's been a while since I've played it so I can't remember the exact wording of it, but it's the line of "If the world tells me that it's wrong to love you, then I'll fight the world." It just gets to me, bro...

5 - Asbel accepts Lambda from Tales Of Graces

I'm gonna be honest, I wasn't particularly bothered by Graces. Like, I did really enjoy it and it has great characters, storylines and music but I just didn't enjoy it as much as other games??? Dunno why, it just be like sometimes I guess... But, one thing I did really love was the conclusion with Lambda. I don't see a lot of people talking about Lambda and that makes me sad because I personally found his story heartbreaking. I mean, he was created and loved by one man who taught him how to be human, including feelings emotions and the appropriate reactions to those emotions while everyone else around him saw him as a monster. And then his 'father' is murdered in front of him just after sending him away in a shuttle to save Lambda, and then immediately after landing on the place he was supposed to be safe, he's called a monster and attacked again. And this cycle keeps continuing with each new vessel he resides in, of course he's going to end up as a resentful entity. But then Asbel comes along and accepts him and even offers to share his body with Lambda so he'll have somewhere to belong. It was just really touching...

I didn't mean to end up rambling so much but hey, Tales Of gives me a lot of emotions and I didn't realise I still had to let them out years later and yet here we are. Sorry for giving you so much to read...

best girl?

I love Elize! Especially in the first game, I was so protective over her. She’s a total sweetheart who deserved better, and I LOVE her character design. She’s the type of character I would play in an RPG, with a combination of healing and dark magic. She’s great. :D Plus I get a kick out of Teepo, although most people seem to be annoyed by him. XD

any ship/s?

Ludger/Jude. :D I always have them linked in Xillia 2 and Jude’s affinity is usually maxed out before I’m a third of the way through the game. XD DON’T TOUCH MY SOFT BOY!!!

favorite part of the game?

There are so many parts of Xillia 2 that I loved! Some highlights are the first time you meet Chronos, any time Julius shows up and there are sibling feels, THE FIGHT WITH VICTOR, and chapter fifteen where you meet Julius before going to the Land of Canaan. (I get chills.) I just loved the entire game and I’m always excited to replay it because the story hit me so hard. Best story of any Tales game, in my opinion.

opinion on the mascot character (if applicable)?

Rollo is a good cat. Julius is a good cat mom. I would be more enthusiastic if there were a puppy dispatch instead of a kitty dispatch. XD

opinion on villain/s? (in the least spoilery way)

MAN ALL THE VILLAINS ARE GREAT. Especially in the first game, the villains all have understandable motives and none of them feel “bad.” I’m a sucker for stories where there are moral shades of gray, and it’s really easy to sympathize with the villains in Xillia. (Gaius is fantastic.) In Xillia 2, I especially love Chronos. (Even after getting my ass kicked on him on hard mode and hearing Joel McDonald’s voice shouting “TETRA SPELL!!!” in my nightmares. Good times.)

main team of 4, and who did you play as mostly?

My A team is Ludger, Jude, Elize, and Alvin. When I’m playing with others, I always play as Jude since he’s my favorite. :D I like characters that prioritize speed, and he’s a great healer, especially when linked with Elize. If I didn’t love Jude so much, though, I’d probably love playing as Ludger or Elize.

favorite town/city/area?

I love Fenmont because of the night clime! Everything looks like starlight, and it’s so beautiful. :D I was excited to go back to Fenmont at the end of the first game. I also like the Sillea Tundra, Tulea Tundra, and Kijara Seafalls.

favorite or most used arte?

My most used arte is probably Jude’s healing circle, but I also really like Cerberus Strike, Aqua Sweep, Rising Falcon and Dragon Shot. When I’m playing as Ludger, I have all of my artes set up to chain linked artes with Jude. It gets pretty crazy. XD Aside from Jude, I freaking love Ludger’s Rolling Thunder arte. The guns aren’t that powerful, but damn does he have style.

favorite music track?

“Hymn of Proof.” I play the version with Ludger’s lyrics to fall asleep at night. It’s so beautiful and emotional. *cries imagining Julius singing it*

favorite monster?

ANYTHING BUT THE GENTLEGNOMES I FUCKING HATE THEM. The dragons and wolves are cool though.
