Textile processing is one of the oldest and most highly advanced sectors. The global demand for textiles has increased exponentially, and so has the number of textile mills and the quantity and quality of wastewater they produce.

okay what I've learned from this semester and this round of grading is that if I ever use an essay prompt about premodern women again (extremely likely) I'll have to say "you cannot talk ONLY about how women were oppressed by the patriarchy or I will fail the essay" instead of "talk about the ideal woman of [insert historical time period + geographical location] vs. the reality of women in [time period/location] based on the evidence that we have" (obvs it was better phrased than that on the actual prompt and it would probably be different in another context).
I...I restructured the entire class so that we'd be able to talk about stuff Greek women actually did based on the evidence. thanks for showing you didn't come to class that day, look at the powerpoint online, or do the reading.
#me (typing with gritted teeth): you went into this with an agenda and are letting your modern biases show and cherry-picking your evidence#'this literary woman was treated as property!' yes that's because she is literally enslaved#'this quote shows women were expected to be married and pregnant all the time!' you have literally left out half the quote. the middle half#'this is a situation of extreme servitude!' you didn't actually read the passage where the writer literally says 'equal companion'#'women are portrayed weaving and playing with children showing that they were brutally subjugated'#interesting. what do you really think about textile manufacture and childcare and why do you feel that they're innately negative?#context: undergraduate 100-level greek civ class at a women's college#your girl#btw they weren't forced to talk about greek women they had a choice of five prompts and had to choose three

Dyes widely used in the textile, food and pharmaceutical industries pose a pressing threat to plant, animal and human health, as well as natural environments around the world, a new study has found. Billions of tons of dye-containing聽wastewater聽enter聽water systems聽every year, and a group of researchers from the UK, China, Korea and Belgium say that new sustainable technologies including new membrane-based nano-scale filtration are needed to solve the issue, adding that legislation is needed to compel industrial producers to eliminate colorants before they reach public sewage systems or waterways. Published today in聽Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, the study聽Environmental impacts and remediation of dye-containing wastewater聽was written by academics from the University of Bath, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, the Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH), and KU Leuven, Belgium. The research highlights that currently, up to 80% of dye-containing industrial wastewaters created in low- and middle-income countries are released untreated into waterways or used directly for irrigation. The authors say this poses a wide range of direct and indirect threats to human, animal and plant health

What has natsuo been up to since he was freed ? What have the other quirkless people done after realease ?Also how have some heroes(Like hawks) and hero students reacted to finding out that the organizatorom they served was using slave labor
Natsuo is catching up on his schooling! He's in an accelerated program and, thanks to an embarrassingly small amount of settlement money from the government, he has his own shitty little apartment in a barely tolerable area. He loves it to pieces. He isn't used to living alone, so it gets pretty lonely, but some of the other workers live close by and they come hang out pretty often. Izuku visits a lot too! He's aiming to be a nurse. Some of the others have gotten work in hero agencies for costume repair (its. ethically strained, but its the only work they know and they are happy to do it, as long as they are getting paid a fair wage.) and some others are working in activism and quirk discrimination charities.
As for reactions?
Hawks
His hands were still shaking. He'd been retching uncontrollably for what felt like hours, his hands shaking as he torn himself out of his costume. How many times had he been grateful for the hand stitched seams on his costume being gentler on his wings? For the warm leather on his googles that had already been shaped for his head, with hand written instructions for leather care tucked into the box. Fuck - he'd thought they were old fashioned for the note, not locked in a factory without so much as a fucking printer. He needed to make a public statement, the faster the better. He had to say something loudly because the HPSC had time to write his statement for him. Just. Just when his hands stopped shaking.
Endeavor
His PR team must be having a field day. Endeavor's own son, recovered from one of the factories? The man himself with nothing to say? What could he say? That he'd kept his mouth shut so his youngest son had a chance at overtaking All Might, that his youngest son could help where he failed? Ha - that'd go over well. He hoped Natsuo knew he still had a college fund. Still had a credit card in his name, a bank account his father put money in once a month, for when he was finally free. Maybe he'd take it, if it was from Fuyumi.
Iida Tenya
His brother had been upset that week. He'd come home early, corralling his parents into a meeting room and not leaving until they'd found a new costume supplier and a public statement beyond repute. He hadn't known why, not until the news story had broken that morning. Tenya had been lost, staring at the television until he was late for his train, only arriving to class minutes before the bell. He'd always wanted to be a hero. But - could he? Knowing what he knew now, about the organization he'd have to answer to?
Bakugo
His mother had screamed when she'd seen that footage of Deku, All Might carefully breaking the metal cuff around his throat. The nerd had only smiled weakly, like seeing All Might wasn't everything he'd ever wanted. He was so thin, his hands covered in small cuts, burns and blisters. He wanted to feel upset, that Deku had ruined his hero costume too - but. It was his fault. He was the one who told those fuckers Deku was quirkless, after auntie had so carefully not commited to putting anything down on paper. He and the idiots had trailed All Might once, before they knew that's who Yagi was. They'd seen the buildings, the lady with the collar. They'd put it out of their minds because they hadn't had a choice. No closure, just a creeping unease that would sneak up on them at night. Deku had been in one of those factories. Deku had been making the blast proof mesh on the palms of his gloves, the sweat wicking fabric of his winter costume, the thick tread of his combat boots. Katsuki stared up at the blank ceiling and tried not to think any more.
#among others - aizawa is incandescently furious#his capture weapon is all UA at least#so he patrols in plain clothes for weeks until UA can manufacture its own textiles and costume parts#same with a lot of the staff#it starts a bit of a silent protest within the hero ranks#countless heroes patrolling in street clothes because they cant stand the idea that costumes ment to make people feel safe had been#produced at the cost of so much human misery#asks#my fic#bnha au#indentured for life au

The Gayle and Lord textile finishing plant lays dormant and abandoned along the banks of the Great Pee Dee river in Society Hill South Carolina. This plant ceased operations in 2016 leaving behind an environmental disaster and ticking time bomb. As of 2022 the site was listed on the Federal National Priorities List (NPL) and is designated as a Super Fund site for remediation and clean up. Efforts have already begun to prevent further groundwater contamination and site clean-up.

the problem with my ocs is that the worldbuilding isnt a vehicle for them,,they are a vehicle for the 90 year economic agricultural decline of a fantasy nation due to a rock shortage. there is 5 sentences worth of some gay people and their very unique armor. back to rocks-
#kai talking#there were many other reasons for the decline but like the rock shortage didnt help#like the people with personalities will never be as interesting to me as this maritime trading power that got rich off of textiles and is#partially that rich bc theyre like the only ones who can manufacture cloth that's impervious to moisture#which is really. really important for countermagics#dont WORRY abotu it

re: prev reblog is a big reason why I don't sell textile work at the moment. i make things for myself and occasionally as gifts. i'll do mending (which i never charge for) for myself and others as i can, but too many people are unwilling to recognize the labor and skill that goes into textiles and other manufacturing. even the folks that mean well! for example i'm making a cardigan for a friend as a christmas gift. it's a fairly simple knit cardigan with really chunky yarn. i've made one before so i already had the needles and pattern, but the yarn cost about $200. i didn't time myself the last time i made the pattern, which estimates being a 12 hour project but since i'm a slower knitter it'll likely take me more. but let's say i get it done in 12 hours. were this not a gift, and i charged minimum wage $7.25/hr that's another $87. so just to 'break even' on labor and materials that cardigan would need to sell for $287, it would need to be higher for any profit. in manufacturing, these numbers get a bit more flexible, allowing costs to go down as materials can be bought in bulk for cheaper and your labor is highly skilled and even if the cardigan is still hand knit (we do have knitting machines that are able to knit a lot of things so likely this would be another time saver if machines were used though you do then need to factor in maintenance and a worker to operate them) you likely would have folks doing different steps of the process so instead of one person doing all steps chronologically you can have multiple people working on individual steps at the same time so you create more sweaters per hour even though the actual labor hours might stay roughly the same (maybe 4 people working 3 hours to make the cardigan versus 1 person working 12) and with time the timing gets honed to a balance of speed and quality that then can reduce labor costs too.
i could keep going but like yeah more folks should get involved in labor rights and understanding manufacturing

Whyyyyyyyyy do companies insist on making bedsheets that are cotton mixed with a plastic like polyester!!!! When I ask for cotton bedsheets I mean I want 100% cotton bedsheets not 52% polyester 48% cotton!! Like I get that cotton is not that environmentally friendly in terms of water use but at least once the bedsheets reach the end of their life they can be recycled easily or composted because it鈥檚 an organic material. Also I have cotton bedsheets that are genuinely decades old and they鈥檙e still going strong and they鈥檝e been used and washed a lot! So I know that good quality bedsheets will last a very long time and they feel much nicer
#trying to buy clothes and other textile items like bedsheets that contain no plastic#obvs difficult if something needs stretch or if it鈥檚 active wear#but come on I feel like brands are cutting soooo many corners when it comes to manufacturing products#and they鈥檙e taking the piss sometimes#was in John Lewis and saw a cute jumper. it was over 拢200 and was not 100% wool it was a tiny bit of wool mixed with various plastics#it鈥檚 like if I鈥檓 paying 拢200 for a jumper I am expecting it to be 100% natural materials#get fucked. I鈥檓 not a fucking mug.#it made me so angry#not that I was going to buy it anyway because who has 拢200 to spend on a jumper#but the audacity of the brand to sell that at that price. get fucked.

Founded on a vision to redefine the textile industry in Ludhiana, Oswal Group鈥檚 journey from inception to industry leader is nothing short of inspiring.
The Genesis:聽The Oswal Group鈥檚 foray into the textile industry dates back to the 1960s when the visionary entrepreneur, Late Shri Rattan Chand Oswal, laid the foundation stone of what would become a textile empire. With a keen eye for opportunities and a steadfast commitment to quality, Oswal ventured into yarn production, setting the stage for the group鈥檚 meteoric rise.
Excelling in Ludhiana鈥檚 Textile Hub:聽Ludhiana boasts a rich heritage in textiles. In such a competitive landscape, Oswal Group didn鈥檛 just survive; it thrived. Through strategic investments in state-of-the-art technology, a relentless focus on innovation, and nurturing a skilled workforce, the Oswal Group carved a niche for itself.
The group鈥檚 vertical integration, from spinning mills to garment manufacturing, enabled streamlined operations and superior quality control. This holistic approach not only ensured consistency in product standards but also bolstered Oswal鈥檚 reputation as a reliable textile partner globally.
Moreover, Oswal Group鈥檚 commitment to sustainability has been commendable. Embracing eco-friendly practices, optimizing resource utilization, and adhering to stringent environmental regulations have not only reduced the ecological footprint but also enhanced brand credibility.
Evolution in the Textile Industry:聽As the textile industry in Ludhiana evolves in the digital age, Oswal Group is poised to embrace the winds of change. Embracing automation, leveraging data analytics for predictive maintenance, and integrating IoT (Internet of Things) for smart manufacturing are avenues the group can explore to enhance efficiency and productivity further.
Furthermore, investing in research and development to explore alternative fibers and sustainable manufacturing processes can bolster Oswal Group鈥檚 competitive edge. With growing consumer consciousness towards ethical sourcing and eco-friendly products, tapping into this market segment can unlock new growth avenues.
Moreover, expanding the group鈥檚 global footprint through strategic alliances and partnerships can diversify market exposure and mitigate risks associated with geographical dependencies. Collaborating with international brands for co-branded collections or joint ventures can not only enhance brand visibility but also facilitate knowledge exchange and technological advancements.
Additionally, nurturing talent through skill development programs and fostering a culture of innovation can fuel Oswal Group鈥檚 evolution. Encouraging intrapreneurship and empowering employees to think beyond conventional boundaries can lead to breakthroughs in product design, manufacturing processes, and business models.

Watching the How Do They Do It episode [S16/Ep18] about viscose, a synthetic fabric made from trees, and it's bonkers...
They take wood pulp from trees in Sweden and turn it into cellulose fluff and then paper, then ship to Germany where it gets dissolved in caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and the resulting goop gets forced through nozzles to turn it into thread, neutralised with sulphuric acid, washed off with water, and spun onto reels.
And then shipped somewhere else and woven into the actual cloth... then shipped somewhere else to become clothes.
