i used to wonder how the tf2 community on tumblr has such horribly inaccurate headcanons (that they claim are canon) about the characters and world but then i see polls that look like this

The thing that kills me about maximum ride is that in the hands of literally any other author, it could have been great. A story about 6 kids who were experimented on in a lab and now have wings? How cool is that? Oh they’re running from the lab that created them, and being hunted down by other creations from the lab? Fuck yes!

But like. The metaphors and shit someone could do with it also. These six kids have to pretend to be normal when they venture into the real world, lest they be caught and sent to a zoo or another lab to be studied for just being who they are? The main character has a younger stepbrother who let himself be turned into a monster whose body is slowly deteriorating around him as he desperately vies for even a shred of his father’s attention, who is too fixated on the boy’s stepsister to even bother with him? A man who uses his own child to experiment on, whom he gives the responsibility of saving the entire world, whether she wants to do or not, whether she can do anything, actually save the world or not? Like I’m losing it here.

If they had let this book even pretend to be serious for even a moment and not cut to a fart joke seconds after something emotionally devastating happens, it could have been so great.
