You got any recs for learning mahjong? It's fun and I win sometimes but I cannot for the life of me remember the different hands, nor do I know how to win outside of riichii lol

to my understanding (limited, have only developed any sort of knowledge about this game in the past 4 days), all the hands of mahjong are named due to their actual makeup, kind of like a story. consider "Thirteen Orphans". this hand is comprised of a one and a nine of each suit, plus one of every dragon, and one of every wind (plus one extra wind to make tenpai).

the reason this hand is called "Thirteen Orphans" is because each of these tiles cannot possibly link with each other in any way. consider a 2 and a 4. a 2 could be linked to a 4 via a 3. that said, if you already had a 4 and a 5 with the 2, you would have no reason to keep the 2, because the 2 would only be useful if you had a 3, whereas keeping the 5 would give you a group if you found a 6 OR 3 (456, 345). pairings of two tiles can be given value this way, and that value is called its "wait" value, referring to what it leaves you literally waiting for. comparatively, a one can only link with itself and a two, and a 9 can only link with itself and an eight. in terms of wait value, they are as incompatible as possible. the honor tiles (winds and dragons) also cannot link between each other at all, and instead can only make pairs with duplicates of themselves. for this reason, these tiles which could not possibly form any sort of unit are called "Orphans".

so just figure out why they're called what they're called. you could even write em down and reference em, that aint cheating.

ok i need to talk about this somewherel. in infinite wealth you can finally play mahjong with your homies. as someone who actually enjoys playing mahjong because im not shackled to the outrageous demands of completion, i really like this particular addition. so i take the taxi to kamurocho and scoot over to good ol' lullaby mahjong. i sit down at the table with seonhee, saeko, and zhao. i just got zhao for the party at this time so i wanted to up my bond with him. and hey, zhao's pretty cool, right? even made a cameo in LJ that's just how cool he is

so it's all going ok. first 2 rounds are just draws and i get both tenpai point bonuses. then this ASSHOLE zhao just starts WINNING. FOUR games in a row and he WON WITH RON EVERY SINGLE TIME.

GUESS WHO HE WAS STEALING FROM.

ME.

AND ALMOST EVERY TIME THAT HE DID SO, I WAS IN RIICHI SO I COULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE WAS SAFE. THEY ALL SAT AROUND THE STARTING POINTS WITH MORE OR LESS FROM THE TIES. AND THEN YOU JUST HAVE ZHAO HOARDING COPIOUS AMOUNTS POINTS, WHILE KIRYU AND I PLUNGE INTO DEBT.
