I felt true, visceral fear today after I returned from work and discovered that my Huion monitor tablet wouldn't connect to my laptop. I knew that bitch was all powered up and screaming but blue-balling me with only pitch-black darkness.

I'd sure like to help. Since you say "interesting or unique" I'll skip over the widely praised usual things. Vampire basics like Bram Stoker's Dracula (looks gorgeous, great cast, perfect soundtrack), The Lost Boys (peak 80s style) or Blade (great vampire action).

Only Lovers Left Alive - vampires are somewhat immortal and living long enough brings its own bag of emotions. Dread, depression, nihilism. Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston play longtime married vampires living mostly apart and drifting back into each other's life for a bit. Also blood sucking isn't all that fun with todays diseases. Near Dark - this is a classic, but sometimes it gets overlooked. Director/writer Kathryn Bigelow tells a sorta western story, but there are vampires in it, except we don't even call them that. It starts with young dude means a beautiful woman, and oops she bites him and then he falls in with the crowd she hangs out with. Lots of violence in this one. (IMDB)

Stake Land - I really enjoy the film "Daybreakers" about a world with vampires being the dominant species and the problems it causes, that is a wider known film of that variety. "Stake Land" is like the discarded sibling, focusing on a post-apocalyptic atmosphere. A vampire hunter finds a survivor who just saw his family being slaughtered and they drive cross-country to hopefully find a safe place. If you like typical zombie-apocalypse genre conventions, then this is a nice vampire version. (IMDB)

Shadow of the Vampire - really not a hidden gem, but I have to mention it. This film tells the story of the filming of Murnau's 1922 "Nosferatu", but in this the lead actor Max Schreck is actually a vampire. Willem Dafoe gives a wonderful performance and it's just film history wrapped into vampire drama. (IMDB)

What We Do in the Shadows - this was definitely unique when it came out and hey, it spawned a whole tv show. A mockumentary about vampires just living in the real world. Just fun to watch. (IMDB)

Cronos - this is Guillermo del Toro's first feature film and tbh it's been forever since I've seen it. There is a device that grants immortality, but the side effects are pretty much turning into a vampire (the hunger for blood, not going out in the sun). An old man finds the device and a not so noble businessman desperately wants it. Fun to see early del Toro and his use of monsters vs human evil. (IMDB)

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night - an Iranian black-and-white film, about a female vampire who is drawn into some family drama about addiction. Not an easy watch, very stylistic (influenced highly by spaghetti western), but also really interesting with the themes of desire and danger. Unique for sure. (IMDB)

We Are the Night - if I'm really honest, I'm not sure I would even call this a good film. There is so much I'd like to change. BUT I also absolutely adore it for being unapologetic about a group of women doing what the fuck they want - as vampires. And there is a reason they don't turn men. Byzantium - full disclosure, I saw this once and didn't enjoy it much, but I want to give it another shot, because I think I was in the wrong mood back then. Director Neil Jordan is good with visuals and being weird like in "Interview with the Vampire", "The Butcher Boy" ot"Breakfast on Pluto". And here he tells a long interwoven life story of a mother and daughter vampire duo. In a world where vampires have a strict code and used to be mostly noble men. So there is class and gender in the mix, lots of sexuality (there is rape and prostitution) etc etc. Maybe this could be for you, idk. (IMDB)

Let the Right on in - always to be found on a list like this. There is the Swedish film (based on the book) and an US remake that made a few choice changes, but is overall still worth watching. Kinda a bummer to put it out as a vampire film right away. When I read the book I thought it was just a serial killer story and the twists and turns of who is who was a wild ride. There is a young boy who gets bullied at school, but befriends the new kid in the neighborhood who seems to live a weird life. Heavy themes about grooming and the true horror only sets in at the end. As for simple vampire action, I do love the "Underworld" series. This year's "Abigail" shouldn't have revealed it was a vampire film at all, but it's very bloody and funny, so a quick watch. Also a bloody good time is "30 Days of Night", and I stand by my belief that red blood looks fantastic on white snow. If you like animated films, the anime "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" is a great gothic vampire love story. There's lots to find.

i totes agree with your take about finn and ghostbusters, and i think it's because he's an adult. like, he was given free reign on IT to be himself and improv, but the whole characterisation was believable cos it was just kids in a smalltown? despite the killer clown lol. but in GB he's just finn in a GB costume, and i think HE felt that way too, so the immersion required as a self-aware adult to get into character was missing. this might not be his fault. idk... but i think the magic of early ST owes a lot to the lack of self-awareness of these kids who were having a blast. but now, cos of the way theyve aged, the issues are sort of the same (monster to fight etc), but the actors are now adults, so the question is: can they as performers emotionally connect with these characters in a way that makes fighting said monster believable?

this is also why i hope for a really deep psychological arc for mike in s5, cos it will give finn something meaty and grounding (like sadie had in s4) hidden in the subtext, instead of just fighting a big tentacle or something. s4 felt very performative and theatrical to me. 11's screaming and powers are getting tired too; only the helicopter scene gave me actual chills, and that was mainly down to shock + big budget effects cos it looked real. but her tricks are old. wanna be totally surprised in s5 tbh

Yes!! I think I actually need to sit down and watch the GB films beyond clips for an honest acting read but siiigh I'm just so resistant to a remake! I'm too much of an 80s diehard but for some real Finn analysis I feel like I gotta. Because what you said feels very accurate already. Finn in a costume. Where Mike was wearing a GB costume and it was a character moment haha. It's very interesting how goooood these kids were as actors and the thing is - child actors don't always grow up to be amazing adult actors (errrr, maybe not the best wording. Mind jumps to adult film 🤭🤭 anyway). Normal actors! The emotions and the humor were sooo so vulnerable and flowy when Finn was younger. I thought he was pretty good in season 4 but not as good as early seasons? The mike and will scenes were great - but honestly, they weren't as meaty acting-wise as earlier seasons (s2 in particular).

S5 is a make or break!!! S1-s4 was a story about childhood and growing up but s5 is a coming of age journey. Raw emotions. Vulnerability. Facing deep, self-reflection - I love the idea of very inward character moments in the face of an outward, dynamically changing world (the end of the world!) there are monsters to fight, but internal demons to confront. And beautiful things, too. Can these actors pull it off??? Will and mike are obviously my favorites and I honestly have no doubts that Noah can do it. Finn?? I really, really want him to do amaaaazing. Like I've said. The bits I've seen of him in other things haven't blown me away as much as young Mike and Richie have. Fingers crossed, he's still my fave regardless lol

In regards to his career in general - I'd love to see him leading or being top billed in a comedy where he doesn't play a teenager. Could be college! I know nostalgia films might be a type-cast at this point, be he's honestly the type of dude where it fits? He's an old soul. He's into retro stuff. don't want to take the time to 'git gud, n00b' because they emphatically do not enjoy the process of sucking at shit until they don't suck. and this includes those who might be interested in taking the time, but look at everything they feel might be required and think: 'i could go to film or art school for 3+ years or i could spend 30 minutes tailoring a midjourney prompt.' i kinda get this one, tbh. artistic skill is hard-won whether you're formally trained or not. i am untrained; i would say self-trained. but i never stopped drawing as a child like most people do. something visually and mentally clicked for me, something that i couldn't even articulate until i read drawing on the right side of the brain in my 20s, that allowed me to jump over the initial 'why can't i just draw what i SEE AAAAKSHDKF' hurdle. maybe this is what 'talent' actually means? that early mental/visual shift—where you come to see the world and things in it as a collection of shapes, lines, planes, lights, darks, color blocks, mostly divorced from context or meaning—is present in others like myself, and it does smooth your path. adults just draw for two, three, four years, compare themselves to people who felt some version of that aforementioned shift and/or went to art school, and conclude that they 'have no talent'. while that understandably feels like a long-ass time to go nowhere fast, three years really isn't a lot of time for organic, undirected skill development. i'm serious. inventing the wheel by yourself takes fucking forever; my drawings didn't stop sucking until i was around 11 or 12. that's half my childhood. easily. but actually taking classes or diving into hardcore study? can and will drastically shorten that time. the progress i've seen competent drawing teachers achieve with their students in weeks or months, or artists on youtube who do frequent, deliberate practice in a year is not a miracle. real progress is attainable within a reasonable fucking frame of time IF YOU WANT IT.

really, really aren't satisfied with art that looks bad to them and still want to realize their ideas. and i'm talking crying themselves to sleep over the mismatch between their own skills and said ideas. that frustration is REAL and a version of it is actually a huge factor in why children stop drawing. see all of the above. i don't know how to ease the pain of that skill mismatch. me, i sat with a lot of frustration for a long time; hell, I STILL DO. i think i'd still be halfway decent at lineart and intimidated by actually painting it if i hadn't just started pushing myself to fucking PAINT already, even if it looked really basic. being simultaneously OK with whatever you can do right now and still striving to improve is emotionally difficult. and i know it hurts to have a really cool idea and feel blocked from making it real, especially if you're just not there yet. 'THEN JUST COMMISSION AN ARTIST,' i can hear you artists screaming from the ether. yo. artists are expensive. we are, and we kinda need to be to make a decent living or a feasible side hustle (i'm not going to get into artists underselling themselves). i do think most folks in this boat are not greedy tech bros, just ordinary working class folks who want beauty that is good enough without having to shovel over half a week's paycheck for it. to which i would also argue... dude, you can just save up, too.

often only recognize certain styles of painting (realism or hyperrealism; super-glossy, shiny, high contrast digital painting) as art and want to make art like THAT. putting aside the fact that art is all-encompassing and literally anything can be art, paintings in realistic styles are what i would argue most lay people think of as capital-A art. there is a reason why dictators tend to discourage or prohibit non-realist art; why the early USSR and CPC commissioned bright realist murals everywhere; why more abstract art didn't really catch fire in the western world until the advent of photography. people can see themselves and their history, represented in full color and often writ large. that's fucking powerful and sometimes lost, i think, on those of us who see things differently. but that kind of art is even more out of reach for the lay person who wants it. it takes far longer to make and train for, and artists who work in a realistic style can and do command stupid money. not everyone has that kind of patience or pockets that deep.

firmly believe that some people have more talent than others, so skill development doesn't matter. these are usually the people i mentioned in my first point, who've actually tried for months or years to git gud but never knew how or what to practice. they've been exposed to lots of people their age who felt the shift™ and can't really explain their faster improvement. if you know this feel, gentle reader, and have no clue what's actually happening, i understand why you might throw in the towel. US culture in particular is terrible at growing and nurturing talent of all kinds, and artists don't often share the hours they're actually pouring into improving specific skills. 'talent' by itself is fucking useless; a person who is willing to work at continual improvement will mop up the floor with someone who doesn't think they need to build skill. artists know this. and if you don't feel that shift as a kid, you can learn how to unlock it as an adult.

THE ENTIRE THING DUDE XD I think it mentions in the note how it was technically a wip from... a year before? Two years before...? I had known when I wrote it that I wanted to do a social commentary Alice in Wonderland style, and I knew that I needed to draw from the Oddinary trailer in how I did it, and I had stopped back then right after Felix meets Seungmin... because I honestly wasn't sure how I could outdo Felix meeting Jisung XD His scene and the message he has was just built up so well... when I revisited it, I just had to let go of my own expectations and keep pushing ahead tbh I had to accept that some of the commentary would be more overt or more subtle and that was that! The time honestly did help in giving me a fresh perspective... I won't ever remember exactly what my initial idea with Felix's backstory completely was, but I'd been able to absorb other types of media between then, and there was one star wars media scene that ended up playing really well into what Felix's backstory is now!

Or have flashbacks to Minho's life before everything was destroyed...? But as I had these thoughts they were quickly steered into what the story wanted to be-- there was very little planning for that story and a lot of going where the muse took me scene by scene XD [goes to quickly reread and OOF THAT LIA BIT HITS HARDER WITH HER HIATUS T-T] I can think of one thing! I had this idea of Jeongin-Felix-Chaeryeong stepping into knighthood in their own rights, with the memory of their parents and the courage Chan left them with. It didn't ever fit into the flow of the story, but they would've been brave, bold, and daring in their own way, and they would've either remade or forged a new sword to give Chan that Chan would've given to one of them to carry on the legacy of their parents. But it would've taken away from MinChan so I didn't even explore it lol

There’s a chance I do know about them and just didn’t put them here, but I would rather hear one I already know of on the off chance that I’ll get a new one dropped in.

That said! Another list of games I really like that is again in no particular order!

They’re all on itch.io by the way! They tend to work better if you download them but most can be run in your browser and most are also mobile friendly so you can play them on your phone! I’ll note which ones are.

Scout: An Apocalypse Story: I love dystopia stories, I dearly wish we had more IF based in this kind of setting. Set in a wasteland that is trying to pull itself together with people trying to find out if other settlements are out there while also trying to, well, stay alive. I gotta say, I played only E’s route for a long, long time, but once I tried the other ones I haven’t really gone back. I still love E, you can pry the childhood friend trope out of my cold dead hands, but wow. Oliver. Wow. That dude has serious UST. And Sabine!! I’ve been forced out of my little “play it the same way every time” rut and I’m not sorry. I very much like that you can choose the intimacy level, as someone who’s ace. Sometimes I like reading the smut, sometimes I don’t. Options! (mobile friendly!)

Bad Ritual: I got it baaaaaaaaaad~ I do though, I love Siruud. I have terrible, terrible taste in men. I mentioned Dracula in the other list, and here there’s an actual demon. This is a game with *sass* and I always love a chance to be sassy. I think part of the reason I resonate so much with this one is because of how jaded retail has made me tbh but that’s another story.  Honestly, if you like dark settings, I recommend you play this one first of all my recommendations. It’s just such a good game and there are so many choices and even the pronoun choices are pretty varied.  It’s just good! (mobile friendly!)

Wayfarer: Another for the fantasy list! I love the worldbuilding in this one, and the character creator is just amazing. There are maps, there’s a codex, seriously if you love reading lore, this is definitely a game for you. This is like if Tolkien made an IF. It’s amazing. I’ve said that a few times but it’s true. In all honesty it might count as one that’s not so romance focused, since it does focus more on plot. If I could just sit down and make an IF, I’d want it to be like this tbh. With a beautiful framework, a well organized space of information for the players to just look at and see stuff about the world, a way to develop and build their own character in a clear cut way, and the game immediately tells you what stats are effected by what choices. I really enjoy it when games try to work in character creation in creative ways, but sometimes I just want to sit down and go, “Okay, my character has red hair, blue eyes, is short, and has a crippling phobia of lizards” and this game lets me do that. Well, except for the lizard part. (Not as mobile friendly as the others but I make it work!)

Love and Friendship: It’s a regency game and I love Pride and Prejudice. What can I say? Something about the massive amount of rules of society just gets me. Propriety! This is a game that has a set gender protagonist, female, and it actually is a bit different from the norm in that it has two female love interests and one male, when most of the time it’s the other way around. So that’s something. You can even have a platonic route with a fourth love interest, who is also male. There really aren’t enough platonic routes, but I understand why that is, since a lot of IF players are looking for romance. (mobile friendly!)

Exiled From Court: Also a bit of the same vibe simply because of how constrained everyone is by rules. Nobility, after all. There are a lot of love interests, and one is the MC’s sister’s husband, which is definitely gonna be scandalous. Will I do it? Will I? Eventually. I do like how you can act like an absolute hellion, well, as far as that goes considering. You can try to be a better person but that’s less fun, lol. (mobile friendly!)

A Tale of Crowns: This is literally one of the very first twine games I ever played. Really! It’s got a lot of wonderful intrigue and the setting is very fun. There aren’t a ton of fantasy middle eastern games, and this game is definitely one reason why we should have more. There’s a great deal of customization, and the love interests’ gender will changed based on your MC’s gender and sexuality combination. I like R & D best, and no that’s not a pun. I think. (mobile friendly!)

For the Crown: This is a different game, I swear, they just both happen to have crown in the title, lol. You get to play as an assassin, which is a great deal of fun. The lore in the game is very nice too. I tend to play with they/them pronouns though, and there were a few pronoun hiccups in the game. Seems to be an issue across all of the games made by this author, but I know how much of a pain variables can be so hopefully those will get squashed soon. There’s an explicit content choice in this one as well, and if you turn it on there is an “equipment” choice, so this is definitely gonna be spicy later on! (mobile friendly, but after each chapter the browser shifts as it auto saves. you just have to tap restore game to keep playing.)

-These games aren’t exactly twine games, but I’m putting them here because they’re visual novels that fit the IF format for the most part and are also on itch.io and I love them and for this post at least I will bend my own rules! They all have gender choice MCs and are nonbinary friendly.-

Perfumare: This game is actually being made into an IF, with the visual novel as a sort of preview of what we’re gonna get there. I literally cannot wait for that to happen, this game is so good as it is, and from what we’ve been told it’s only gonna get better. This game has an excellent world, the characters are all messy in the best ways, and ugh it has hurt me quite a bit, again in the best way.  It’s another one on the dark side of things. The powers in this game are just so fun, I dearly want a game set in this world where we can choose what powers we have! Maybe that will be in the IF, but I have a feeling the answer is no. We’ve been teased that there will be a second game with a different MC who will get to romance the characters we can’t in this one, and that alone is enough to get me to jump as soon as it drops. The love interests aren’t gender variable but there are two male ones and one female. I, a known mess, recommend Laurent for lots of repression and pain. (not mobile friendly, you gotta play on desktop/laptop)

Andromeda Six: I’ve recommended this one to pretty much everyone I know, it is such an excellent game. The cast is a mashup of misfits and makes me miss my Mass Effect crews. I specifically set my pronouns to she/her just so they’d all call me Princess. What can I say, I like it. There’s lots of pain, lots of drama, lots of world building, lots of interesting lore, and there is much breaking of cuties. Much. Can’t wait till we get to the next planet. The author has gone out of their way to say that each love interest is gonna get their own arc and will definitely get their own share of attention, so no matter who you pick you’ll have plenty of time to be with them and watch them shine. (not mobile friendly, gotta play on desktop/laptop)

When the Night Comes: Not only do you get to play a badass hunter but it has multiple poly routes! Multiple! It’s rare when you get one poly in a game, this one has three! You can also choose to romance any of them individually if you so choose. It’s dark fantasy gothic, and I really really like that. (not mobile friendly, gotta play on desktop/laptop)

Errant Kingdom: Made from the same dev as WTNC, this one is set in a more fantasy middle eastern setting. Very pretty, lots of intrigue. You can choose between three set protagonists, who can have three different storylines depending on your choices, which is very nice for replayability. It’s got two poly routes this time, and it works the same as their other game in that you can romance them individually if you’d rather be monogamous. (not mobile friendly, gotta play on desktop/laptop)

Hi, Jessica! It is I, master procrastinator who's totally not ignoring a pending essay and choosing to read fic instead, not at all, where did you hear that?

ANYWAYS, no regrets because you are such an amazing writer SO...

Firstly, that Untitled Marcus drabble made me soft 🥺🥺. I really loved how hesitant he was to express the love he so clearly feels, and how scared he is of losing Reader. The way he thinks about her is nothing short of adoring, and her feelings are obviously as strong as his. All in all, this couple makes for a very supportive and lovely pair and I wish them a life full of happiness and understanding together 😌.

"Wildflowers" is an adorable tale of a Reader in love and a lovely Ezra and I really enjoyed it. Him being so enchanted with nature on every planet was, well, adorable, and so was her being enamored with him. I'll be honest, I didn't trust the mysterious flowers at first and honestly thought they'd be dangerous in some way, but I was glad they weren't and these two could just enjoy each other's company without having to fight a murderous flower or something. And getting to see Ezra's POV was a delight, especially since we got to confirm that he is as taken with Reader as she is with him. Their kiss was really cute, and I could read Ezra waxing poetry about Reader forever.

And then we have "Zenith". I did not know I needed a fic like this, but I clearly did. Reader and Ezra's love here was just so fucking tender I almost died. Seriously, the kiss descriptions were beautiful (for lack of a more adoring word), and their conversation made me go 🥺🥺. We stan a couple who loves one another. 10/10, short and sweet, Winner of the Make Me Feel Soft In 600 Words Or Less Award.

And last but most definitely not least, we have the "San Valentín" series. "San Valentín" came into my house and murdered me. Seriously, you can't have a quickie in a supply closet full of unspoken tenderness and spoken playfulness and then end it with the reality shock of remembering these people are not in a relationship and probably shouldn't be. I'm starting to think YOU are the 'bastarda malvada'.

"Desiderium" leaves nothing to be desired. Also, RIP to Jason the CIA lackey, I'm sure you are a very cool dude and I hope you find someone, but Reader's heart is taken, I'm afraid. And also RIP Reader's confession plans. No judgement here, I'd also forgo any big admission plans if Javier Peña looked at me the way I'm imagining he looked at her. And I laughed a bit at Javi's obvious jealousy, I love this man. Aaaand RIP me when Reader actually confessed and Javi reacted like THAT. Smh, Javi, smh.

And then there's "Saudade". From the get go I DID NOT TRUST that title because you do not name a happy ending "Saudade", you just do not. Javi and Reader's awkward interactions were straight up painful, but what really hurt me was his continued rejection of her affections. Him coming to her place and telling her THAT was more than I expected, tbh. Very painful, I admit, but beautiful nonetheless. And a hopeful ending, which, again, is the best I could've expected given the title and actually makes a lot of sense for their relationship. In my heart these two are now (2020) happily married with two and a half dogs, just so you know.
