Una vuelta a Taiwán - Día 6: Taitung a Ruisui

El comienzo del día fue difícil. Los shorts ya no se sentían confortables y las piernas estaban mas pesadas, pero decidí seguir. Saliendo de Taitung la ruta sube y entra a un valle que va hasta Hualien. Estaba impresionado por todo el verde que me rodeaba, desde los bosques en las montañas a las plantaciones de frutales y arroz. La ruta seguía este valle con algunas subidas, pero ninguna como la del día anterior. La mayor parte de los pueblos están en las mesetas al final de cada subida, donde pare un par de veces por comida y refrescos.

La subida mas difícil del día fue la subida a la meseta donde el esta el monumento al Trópico de Cáncer de la costa este. La carretera estaba llena de autos, buses de turismo y unos cuantos ciclistas (aquí empecé a reconocer algunas caras de los días anteriores). Después de unas cuantas fotos al monumento al Trópico de Cáncer, descendí en Ruisui.

Visité rápidamente el pueblo y luego me fui al hostal, el cual estaba hacia las montañas y un poco lejos del pueblo. Caminando alrededor del hostal, vi un grupo de gente cantando en un improvisado karaoke. No habían muchos restaurantes cerca del hostal, así que comí en un negocio de conveniencia.

Una vuelta a Taiwán - Día 4: Kaohsiung a Hengchun

Una suave lluvia caía sobre Kaohsiung cuando empece mi viaje. Después de una mala noche, las piernas se sentían pesadas y mi ropa se mojaron rápidamente después de empezar. Al principio fue difícil andar a un ritmo constante por los semáforos, pero una vez fuera de la ciudad se hizo mas fácil. El paisaje durante la primera mitad de la ruta era gris, pasando por áreas industriales y algunas villas, en una de las cuales me detuve por refrescos.

Una vez que la ruta llegó a la costa, el paisaje cambio radicalmente. La segunda mitad de la ruta sigue mayormente por la costa, donde muchos autos paraban para comer. El sol ya había comenzado a brillar, pero una suave briza marina era suficiente como para refrescar. En este trayecto habían mucho trafico, así que la ruta ciclista era compartida por ciclistas y motoristas.

Una vez mas me separé de la Cycling Route No. 1, la cual continua hacia la costa este sobre las montañas donde el alojamiento es mas difícil de encontrar y mas caro. Por lo que seguí las Cycling Routes No. 1-9 y 1-20 hasta Hengchun, donde pararía por el día. A pesar de el comienzo del día fue difícil, la segunda mitad de la ruta fue muy buena y entretenida.

Con algo de tiempo antes del check-in en mi AirBnB, visité las 4 puertas de la ciudad y el Templo de Guangning. Después de dejar mis cosas en mi cuarto y tomar una noticia necesaria, salí a caminar y cenar.  Caminé por la viejas calles de la ciudad, comí noodles con carne y disfrute de un jugo fresco. Afortunadamente, la casa donde me quedé era bien amena, así que no tuve problemas a la hora de dormir.

Una vuelta a Taiwán - Día 3: Chiayi a Kaohsiung

Después de un buen descanso, me recuperé rápidamente. El recorrido del día era largo, pero la ruta plana. Comencé a un buen ritmo, pero aun hacia calor, así que me preparé para parar cuando lo necesitara. Sin embargo, la ruta tenia mas árboles que el día anterior, y no había viento. Mi primera parada fue en la linea del Trópico de Cáncer, a la salida de Chiayi. En el lugar hay un centro de exploración solar, el cual estaba cerrado cuando pasé, y un modelo de cohete.

Mi primer desvío de la Cycling Route No. 1 fue hacia Tainan. La ruta usa calles menos transitadas y el paisaje era agradable. Después de seguir unos canales y riachuelos, pase por Tainan y paré en un local para rellenar las botellas y almorzar. Rápidamente salí de Tainan con destino a Kaohsiung.

Entrar a Kaohsiung fue muy frustrante. Hasta el momento estaba haciendo un buen tiempo, pero los semaforos me retrasaron por lo menos una hora. Además de cansarme mas por las paradas frecuentes. Una vez que llegue al alojamiento, la ducha no funcionaba correctamente. En la noche, me junté con un amigo del trabajo que estaba visitando Kaohsiung. Fuimos al Liuhe Night Market, donde probamos la comida marina y disfrutamos de la hospitalidad local. Sin embargo, no pudimos encontrar un bar para tomar unas cervezas, así que cada uno se fue a su hotel antes de que la lluvia comenzara a caer.

Una vuelta a Taiwán - Día 8: Luodong a Taipei

La lluvia del día previo casi limpio por completo mi cadena, así que antes de empezar le puse un poco de lubricante. El lubricante no era el mejor para la cadena, pero eran el único que pude encontrar la noche anterior. Después de esta reparación menor empecé mi viaje a Taipei. La primera parte entre Luodong y Fulong iba entre parques carreteras. Aquí vi algunas personas andando en bici temprano en la mañana, algunas compartieron la ruta hasta Fulong, donde la mayor parte de la gente parecía ir. A pesar de que la ruta por la costa era relativamente plana, el viento en contra lo hizo un poco mas difícil y empecé a sentir el frio del invierno. Así que me detuve en Fulong para un descanso rápido.

Desde Fulong la ruta se interna en valles y comienza a subir. Aquí el viento desapareció pero llegó la lluvia, que se fue intensificando a medida que la ruta subía. Una vez que crucé el segundo de los dos túneles el descenso comenzó. Descender con lluvia y mis anteojos empañados era para morderse las uñas. El día estaba frio, así que hice el check-in rápidamente para tomar una ducha caliente. El tiempo y el cansancio físico no pudieron impedirme disfrutar de este día.

Una vuelta a Taiwán - Día 7: Ruisui a Luodong

Este día fue largo en tiempo pero corto en pedaleo. La primera parte fue entre Ruisui y Hualien, donde tomé un tren a Su’ao. También es posible tomar el tren en Xincheng o viajar en bici a Luodong. Sin embargo, estaba cansado y me tocó una lluvia fuerte en mi viaje a Hualien. También como era feriado, mas gente iba viajando con bicicletas en el tren (al parecer hay un limite, pero no es muy respetado). Viajar en bici hasta Luodong no es recomendado, porque la ruta es angosta (y según algunos peligrosa por los despeñaderos) y compartida con toda clase de vehículos, y no tenía mucha experiencia andando en bici en Taiwán.  Aunque solo estuve un par de horas en Hualien, las calles se veían hermosas decoradas con lámparas. 

Una vez en Su’ao, viajé bajo una lluvia suave hasta Luodong. Ahí comencé a sentir el frío del invierno en el norte, especialmente mientras esperaba para hacer el check-in. Después de dejar mis cosas, caminé y comí en el mercado nocturno, el cual tal como el de Taitung estaba repleto de gente, pero era posible caminar y comer. Luego me dirigí al Luodong Cultural Working House, que me llamó la atención cuando llegué a la ciudad. A la hora de mi visita estaba decorado con luces de colores y decoraciones de cerdos. Al final, la ruta este día fue bien fácil, lo que me permitió recuperar fuerzas para los 2 últimos días.

Una vuelta a Taiwán - Día 5: Hengchun a Taitung

Después de un desayuno liviano, me devolví por la ruta No. 1-20 hasta encontrar la ruta No. 1-9. De aquí, la ruta comienza a subir lentamente a las montañas. Mi primera impresión después de ver el perfil de elevación de la ruta y el tiempo, fue que esta iba a ser una subida difícil. Sin embargo, la subida fue mejor de lo que esperaba, solo debía mantener un buen ritmo. El paisaje por otro lado, cambió de plantaciones de arroz y frutas a bosque y humedales, e incluía una reserva de agua. El tiempo también cambió de un día soleado a parcialmente nublado con una brisa refrescante. Cerca de la cima se empieza  a empieza a ver la costa este de Taiwan, y comienza el descenso.

Para cuando llegué a la costa, ya era hora de almorzar. Así que paré en uno de los supermercados en la ruta. Harta gente, incluyendo otros ciclistas, también se detenían aquí. De vuelta en el camino, me di cuenta porque los turistas usualmente prefieren la costa este. Un viento frontal soplaba, lo que me cansó un poco. Después de 4 horas en pedaleando, me detuve por refrescos y snacks en Jinlun. Afortunadamente, el viento paró y pude disfrutar de la parte final de la ruta.

Mi cuarto en Taitung iba a estar listo mas tarde de lo que esperaba, así que fui al centro de la ciudad por una visita rápida. Ahí visité el Railway Art Village, donde ya tenían algunas lámparas para el festival. Una vez que dejé las cosas en mi cuarto, caminé al mercado nocturno. Había tanta gente que a ratos era imposible caminar. Después de este largo día, me fui directo a dormir para recuperar fuerzas para el día siguiente.
