I have one other thought to add to what I put in the tags of my initial reblog, and it's unrefined so bear with me: Each of the oldest Starklings are being set up to face a major threat or "villain." I think they will face them together (wolfpack, "the wolves will come again," also a large part of the mess they're in comes from not being together), but one of them will be the key to success for each threat, and it ties into a "lesson" they have been learning or a flaw of that villain that each kid needs to avoid. There is also a family connection to each threat (which kinda relates to what you said in your comment @esther-dot)

Sansa will be the one to eliminate Littlefinger. Likely, someone else will actually execute him, but she holds the information needed to expose him. Lesson = basically what NOT to do with power. Don't be coercive, don't seek power at all costs. (I'd say Sansa's instincts are good from the beginning on this but it is helpful to have examples of what not to do.) Family connection = LF was raised with Cat; both Cat and Ned failed to see the full scope of his machinations in the present storyline.

Bran is the key to defeating the Others. Again, a lot of other people are involved in fighting this threat, but Bran strikes the final blow. Lesson = Be careful how you wield magical power. Don't get lost in it and hold on to your humanity. Family connection = a Stark was possibly the Night's King, plus generations of northern lore about the Others and history of the Starks supporting the NW.

I think there are theories that Arya confronts Lady Stoneheart. I haven't read much about this one, but the idea makes sense to me. Lesson = Don't become consumed with revenge and lose yourself. Family connection = Mother herself 😓.

Jon: If not Dany, who? (Stannis? that is for another post). Dany makes sense thematically as discussed above. Lesson = One person/family is not exceptional. Don't self-isolate. Also, don't kill the boy; don't kill the softhearted, empathetic part of yourself. Family connection = father.

And the throughline for all of them is hold on to your humanity. Connection matters. Relationships matter, not revenge and not power.

While I agree with Ary@ killing Dany, what I don't understand why Jon will take her blame and get punished while she will end up her own adventure? Why would narrative punished Jon for Ary@ actions? Why would even killing Dany be considered as crime? While I know show ending is similar to books but Jon taking Ary@ blame and punished is not narratively good. Its worse than show. Also it will plot armour for Ary@.

I'm not convinced Arya kills Dany, but if she does, I agree with you. Jon taking the blame wouldn't work for me. Others have speculated that Arya tries to poison Dany, and my supposition is that she does, Dany doesn't die, Jon goes on to kill her. That way, it wouldn't be Jon taking the blame for Arya a la Lady being killed in the place of her losing a hand or Nymeria being killed, but it is reminiscent of the Trident incident in a way, with Arya striking the first blow in a fight to protect someone, and someone else jumping in to protect her.

I expect there will be a lot of connections to AGOT in the endgame so a reference, rather than a full redux works for me. Bran is endgame king, and the first chapter of AGOT is Ned teaching him about justice. We have the kingslayer attempting to kill him in AGOT which is another clue. I believe Martin when he says he knew the endgame way back when, so I’m guessing, many answers are there from the beginning. I recently wrote this about how Jon killing Dany fits in with AGOT Ned:

I think Jon is more likely to be the one to successfully kill her, and in a way that calls to mind Ned's opinion on it, See her tears, hear her last words. That would allow Martin to make sure we see it as just/moral, bring home the Targ v Targ issue, and it shades Ned's decisions and values in a very interesting way. After s8 fans said Ned was wrong to fight against killing Dany in s1, but Martin thinks he was right to object to killing children, so for the two Targ children he was protecting in AGOT (Dany and Jon) to come face to face and one kill the other prevents the conclusion that Ned was wrong. It was the same mercy, the same refusal to see the child of an enemy as an enemy, that saved the boy who will in turn save Westeros. IMO, it's a way to uphold the belief in mercy. I tend to think it’s also Martin’s way of addressing one his questions about his beloved LOTR (what about orc babies etc). (link)

I haven't developed more thoughts on that, but that's where I am at the moment. I talked about some possible foreshadowing with "the dead man's revenge" as well.

Another reason why I object to Arya being the killer is that she is currently operating outside of Ned’s teachings about justice, so I don’t think her killing Dany fits within that initial, crucial theme. It being hard to do the act is an essential part of the struggle with mercy/justice. Someone like Jon on the other hand would provide an opportunity for Martin to wrap up his convo in a thoughtful, albeit complex, way.

Why would even killing Dany be considered as crime?

This is another reason to suspect it will be Jon. Dany will have invaded and burned KL and made a nuisance of herself, I can't imagine how the public would view killing her as a bad thing unless it were someone killing her in socially condemned context ie kinslaying, oathbreaking etc.

I mentioned the other day, Jaime has a horrible rep, but then we find out what Aerys was planning which is a layer of complexity for his characterization, and we also find out that he was ordered to kill his dad so then that's another wrinkle. He goes from without honor, to something admirable, to a blend of several motivations, to something human. I expect Dany's death to involve as many layers. It makes the sense to me that her death involves oathbreaking/betrayal, that doing the right thing marks the killer as a man without honor by some, and that he has a personal motivation as well. The only way to have any layers with the killing of Dany (when it will be so clearly right/necessary after she burns KL) is if it's Jon. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Of course, in all fairness, if people really don’t give a fuck when Dany is taken out (and we know Bran will be king so whatever happens, the Starks end up on power and with a good rep), it’s possible Arya kills her with no repercussions, maybe because, no one knows she did it. If that happens, it could be that Arya’s actions allow Jon to get the family and home he’s always wanted which is certainly, a much happier, more desirable ending for many of us. No plot armor, just a nice little culmination of her training.

But I need to reiterate, it seems increasingly unlikely we will ever get ADOS (shush, we are getting TWOW!), none of us will ever be proven right or wrong, so we don’t need to stress about different thoughts on the endgame. We each kinda get to choose our own ending (within reason!) 😅

Tagged by @crocordile. I didn’t realize until I got to the end that I was supposed to do the questions they posted at the end. I… I'm just gonna do these. Oops.

1. What is the best breakfast you have ever had?

I honestly don’t remember. I usually scarf down my breakfast because I have to go to school or work. The times I made pancakes in college, they were good—food I cooked myself does tend to just taste better.

2. What was your favorite book when you were 13 years old?

Again, I honestly don’t remember. I think I still liked the Warriors series and Redwall and Guardians of Ga’Hoole back then, so probably one of them.

3. Describe your ideal fic (one you don’t have to write)

I could go the easy route and say that I’d love to see some Finduilas x Maeglin fic written, but I’d like to see a KOTOR II fic that runs with the AU idea that the Exile didn’t leave the Republic Army even after she was, well, exiled, and all the implications of that. I wrote meta on it earlier this year.

4. Describe a fanart you would like to see

Okay, I am gonna go the easy route here and say I’d like to see some Finduilas x Maeglin fanart. So long as it isn’t NSFW; NSFW art typically inspires a mixed response in me.

5. State 1-3 opinions on cheese

- I like good Swiss cheese; fight me

- I don’t like most stronger cheeses, though Brie (yes, my definition of strong cheeses is probably kinda pathetic) is good when mixed with fruit or fruit paste

- When buying cheese slices at the grocery store, do not skimp; buy Sargento, you cowards

6. Describe your most recent public or mass transportation experience

Probably the last time I took mass transportation was when I was on the plane back from Las Vegas two years ago, so the massive, agonizing earache I got as we got closer to the ground sticks out most in my head.

8. A random head canon for anything

Okay, let’s talk about the process by which I think Sansa is going to become motivated to turn on Littlefinger in the books.

It will start when Sweetrobin dies. Post-death, Littlefinger will reveal the way he made her complicit in the kid’s death, and forces her to be complicit in the cover-up by feeding her the same line he did after Lysa’s death: “If you tell them the truth they’ll kill you too.” Sansa will at this point be deeply frightened, guilt-stricken, but will go along with it, though her feelings towards Littlefinger will be anything but positive at this point, because she does believe that she will be executed if she exposes him.

Sometime after that, Sansa will discover part or all of the truth about how Littlefinger betrayed Ned. Maybe from Sandor once she meets up with him again. At this point, she will begin contemplating how to break away from him, speculating on how she can expose him, but still hampered because she’s grappling with her guilt over her unknowing complicity in Sweetrobin’s death, and is waiting for a moment when she can expose him without running the risk of being executed.

Then, she’s gonna meet back up with Jeyne Poole after she gets back to the North. You all remember Jeyne, don’t you? I can never take Sansa-goes-North-endgame fics that don’t include her reunion with Jeyne entirely seriously; I can’t imagine she wouldn’t want to see the girl who was forced to impersonate her sister, can’t imagine she wouldn’t feel sorry for her knowing what she went through, and when she discovers that the girl in question is her best friend, well… Jeyne will likely tell Sansa exactly how she wound up playing the part of ‘Arya Stark’, and what happened to her before then, and who was responsible. At which point Sansa is going to go “……Fuck it. I’m taking you down even if I have to go down with you.”

Combine that with the fact that she heard Lysa telling Littlefinger that she killed Jon Arryn for him just like he wanted.

There is going to be an ungodly commotion in the North.

One that hopefully ends with Stannis Baratheon executing Littlefinger for… everything.

9. What’s the nearest piece of art to wherever you are sitting right now (interpret as broadly as you wish)

I got this as a late Christmas present last year; keep forgetting to get a frame for it. @goldseven’s art is gorgeous.

10. A dumb opinion that you used to have

My “not like other girls” disdain of girls who read romance novels. Still hate romance novels, but I try not to look down on girls & women who read them.

11. Freestyle here about a really good story (of any type) you recently read

The last book I read was Alice by Christina Henry, and Jesus was it amazing. I’m not saying it’s perfect, and boy does it have its triggers, but as far as retellings of Alice in Wonderland go, it was incredibly engaging. The darkness in the book was enticing rather than tiring.
