The Great Thing About HNKNA Being An Otome Game

I had an epiphany a few months ago. I’ve talked before about how many pitfalls HNKNA experiences by nature of it being a dating simulator, and how a lot of the cooler parts of the story and lore are overshadowed by the core romance mechanic and how I’m not a big fan of it, blah blah. But I’ve also seen way too many modern Alice in Wonderland adaptations as a result of my ridiculously long-term Kuni no Alice hyperfixation, and allow me to say that there is one thing that it nails that nothing else can even come close to touching— Alice herself!

The Kuni no Alice series brings about what I think is the best modern interpretation of Alice I’ve yet to see in any media I’ve consumed. She’s quick-witted and brings the attitude, but she cares. Her reactions are realistically absurd and there are few moments throughout everything where she feels out of character or unrelatable. And I think the otome genre is crucial to why that is.

By nature, dating simulators don’t have strong protagonists. They’re supposed to be a blank canvas for the player to project onto to achieve their goals. Am I calling Alice flat? No, quite the opposite. Her story is set in a Victorian-inspired fantasy land with lots of guns and danger and a strict social structure, but it’s intended for a modern audience, and when connection with your protagonist is the key to connection with your story, a modern audience means a modern Alice.

The modern Alice is one of the hardest characters to write.

In most instances of an adapted, cool, edgy Alice in Wonderland, the most insufferable character on screen is, in fact, Alice. This is true of the Disney films, SyFy’s Alice special, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, etc. More often than not, Alice Kingsleigh, Hamilton, whatever you want to call her, is a young adult frustrated by life in an oppressive society who will only accept her if she acts in a hyper-specific way, usually at the risk of being institutionalized should she fail to comply. She argues with her parents, who want her to get married, and all of this turns her into a spiteful girl who is always on the defensive.

It’s insufferable to watch.

The character of Alice is too often portrayed as relentlessly mean, but under the guise of empowerment. The audience is tired of weak-willed women, so the director hunches Alice’s dress up passed her ankles and gives her a sword, an attitude, and an ugly man to kiss without her parents’ involvement. Biologically engineered to shatter every well-known gender role established in Victorian England and basically nothing else, movies and TV deliver their “strong female protagonists” in the form of a curt, unchangingly rude version of Alice whose words and actions are supposed to be justified by her circumstances. And god, does it fucking suck!

You can't connect to this Alice, this armed and ready, sharp-tongued, "curiouser and curiouser" Alice who lives in a world that practically clears a narratively untouchable path to every foot she plans to step on. Personally, it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. The misunderstood to confused, to disgruntled, to aggressive pipeline is overplayed to the point where the Alice of any and all modern interpretations has become, essentially, the same character, forced to loop the same 6 emotional plot points from now into eternity, no matter how many coats of science fiction you put over it.

(Yes, there is a part of me that understands this comes from the fact that Alice is most often written by money-hungry, corporate studios, led primarily by men, who do not understand feminine audiences, or how they want to see themselves represented in media. I get that. And Alice Liddell is not safe from that. But consider: she's my babygirl.)

Am I saying the character of Alice can't be mean, can't say fuck, can't have a sword? Of course not!!!! Give women swords!!! But I am saying that every time a director phones it in with that "Oh, I know that book" budget and gives a British blondie trust issues, a prophecy, and a quirked up, top hat-wearing sidekick to have unfulfilling sexual tension with, i lose my wings AND my marbles.

Enter: our Alice Liddell.

What do we have with her, really? Well, the protagonist of a mid-shelf otome game, which has sequels out the wazoo, a movie and 2 stage play runs, but still somehow only enough translated media to fill a single Barnes and Noble shopping basket about halfway. Thanks QuinRose.

But for real.

Alice Liddell is written, from the ground up, as an otome protagonist. As such, there are narrative must-haves that she can't shake. She needs to be relatable to the modern young adult, even if she's supposed to reflect the Victorian female experience. This would usually be the Achilles Heel of an adapted protagonist: you, the player, get to watch in horror as your favorite whimsical Main Girl is watered down into a bowl of nothing soup for the sake of projection and selling more copies of a game with eye candy catboys and toxicity glorification.

HOWEVER,

This necessary mundanity that is baked into Alice's character, inseparable from her very being as the taste of weed in a brownie, is what singlehandedly saves this adaptation and makes her objectively the best. Unlike in a lot of cinematic adaptations, she's not meant to be the (failed) vehicle of a "deeper narrative" about the strength and roles of women in society. She doesn't exist for any higher purpose, she isn't the chosen one who will declare "Damn The Man" and force the world to listen.

Alice is a girl doing everything she can. She's experienced profound loss. She's self-deprecating. Snarky. She's been through break ups, gotten even with bullies, cuddled with her cat on a Sunday, everything that doesn't matter. The crux of her character is that she's been burned by life and love, yet she can't truly give up on them. Hers is a story of healing, of adaptation and getting back up when life kicks the shit out of you. No matter how sharply she speaks, Kuni no Alice's Alice almost always acts from a place of concern and love for others. She crucially never wields a weapon, reacting to the violence of Wonderland with that extremely jaded "holy fucking shit, what the fuck?" energy that I think any of us would bring to the table, given the circumstances. She's not her community's """lunatic,""" she's not sailing the high seas sideways, she's not on drugs, or destiny's favorite, or anything like that. She's new in town! She's sick of these people! She just wants to go home and read!

She's you. She's me. She's a clusterfuck of a damaged girl, trying to sort out what matters, find her passion and move forward without letting her past stray too far from memory. She's someone whose self-importance and perception by others is foreign to her. She wants to matter, wants not to be left alone by the people she loves, but god forbid she ever admit it.

QuinRose gives us Alice Liddell, suffering failgirl, not Alice Liddell, conceptual landmark, and that was the best possible route anyone could have taken with this character. Alice is the main character, but she is not a hero, and that's a fucking genius move.

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

-> you know i gotta say wiwi. i have to. that character was Made For Me i swear to GOD . genuinely i cannot think about prime defenders season 2 episode 39 without feeling physically sick bc i love it so much. its the only one i havent relistened to since i heard it the first time. i KNOW its gonna make me cry again so i genuienly have not touched it even though theres things in there i need to hear again for character research. his arc is so like. narratively satisfying in a way that hits me so fucking deep to my core in an extremely personal way. and like. there were definitely some Decisions that i was REALLY ANNOYING about hating when they were brought up because im used to media with bad storytelling/creators that do not care about their characters but. looking back on it i would not change a single thing about it. i love you wiwi so much.

-> oh dude i have so many hmmmmmmm how to choose just one. i have a LOT of feelings about wiwis original death and i might write something about that when i can get over my shrimp emotions about him. dakota cole audhd truther but that ones pretty much canon anyway so i dont think it counts. vyncent and his relationship with growing up in fantasy world and then being thrown into prime and how he adjusted to that. I think he really lies shitty syfy channel type horror movies that are so stupidly bad. and also plays a lot of video games but again i think thats mostly canon already. i think tide listens to dad rock but also like. ocean man by ween. you already know about my william and ashe being each others emotional support at concerts. i think william and ashe should hang out and do emo kid things more. i also have a lot of feelings about ashe and coping with the crippling loneliness of basically growing up alone and how the pd becoming like INSTANT best friends was so much for him in sooo many ways. you already know how i feel about mark i am in the middle of dissecting him like im in a high school biology class as we speak. uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i know im gonna think of something really good after i hit the post button so stay tuned

💖Which of your fics is your pride and joy? Oh wow! This is such a good question, I love it! Erm... also hard haha, let me think.

I'm tempted to say Time Will Tell because that started as a thought experiment. Can I take a trope I don't really like and make it work for me? The answer was yes so it was a really cool exercise. However, I feel like I might be being overly swayed by the kind comments I've had on it. I have legit teared up reading them. They are frame-worthy. I have the best readers honestly.

Also it does occur to me that time plays tricks. It's easier to remember the stuff I wrote most recently, and not how I felt when I wrote things in the past. At different times, you'd get a different answer. I have more nostalgia for my older fics these days. I'm in a very different place in my life.

Honestly I think I have to go for one of the crossovers. I questioned my life choices while writing both of them because they were such an investment of time and effort. I also knew they were both niche and I could well be writing for an audience of one. However, I still wrote them and that says a lot I think.

So ultimately I'm going to say and the Sins of Atlantis. The Sanctuary/Librarians crossover. I unironically really enjoy it and I have read it more than once. Is that egotistical? Probably. But it's just so much fun.

🤷‍♀️What's a fic you didn't expect to be popular, but really took off? and the Brighter Side of Life. It's a little Librarians oneshot where Eve takes Flynn home to meet her parents. The comments and kudos just poured in (comparatively). I remember being stunned at the time. It was one of half a dozen oneshots I wrote for the Librarians Prompt Month the first year I really took part. That one just went whoosh.

🎬One of your fics gets turned into a TV series. Which one is it and what network is it on? Ooooh. Hmm... interesting. Well this goes back to what I said earlier about time. I don't feel much of a connection anymore beyond "awwww nostalgia" for my older fics. There are some cool details and dynamics, and I feel like taking notes in case I want to incorporate them somehow into a novel in the future. However, that's about the extent of my feelings.

I haven't written a true AU really since those days though. I love AU's, they are a chance to be inventive. When I read back my old fic I'm like "oooh" about the 'clever' choices I made in how to bring in various characters (sorry egotistical again). But that's the fun of AU's really, how to make it all fit together in this new way.

Anyway it's kinda hard to say about my more recent fic, being turned into a TV show because it already is a TV show - it's just missing moments, canon divergence etc.

Also I got to be honest I know nothing about various networks and what they are known for, or what networks are good and what suck. Especially because I mostly watch US TV and I live in England so I never see anything on it's original network (unless it's a multi-region streaming thing like Disney+ I guess).

I suppose... I'm picking at writing an original serial which is the closest books get to a TV show I guess. It's structured very much into episodes and seasons. It's an artifact chasing type unit ala Warehouse 13/the Librarians but based in England, with worldwide adventures and predominantly queer. The Librarians was TNT and Warehouse 13 SyFy (thanks google). I think the new Librarians is on Prime like the new Leverage? The queer MC's do make it trickier though. I think all networks suck for that. I don't know honestly.

⏳If you could go back in time and tell your younger writer self something, what would it be? Another great question!

This is difficult because I have learned so much craft over the years, and it would be amazing to go back and be like "here's what you need to know" so I could write better stories, much earlier. However, that's part of learning I guess - it's a journey. I suppose the emotion here is that I mourn the time I have lost, the stories I didn't tell, and that has less to do with skill and more to do with mental health.

I suppose ultimately it would boil down to a cliché of "don't give up" because I did. As a kid I dreamed of being a writer but when I was about 14 I told myself I had to grow up. That I had more chance of winning the lottery than making any money at it, and I had to get serious and pick a real career. I sobbed all night and a few years later had my first complete mental breakdown, but I digress.

Writing is in my soul. I always return to it. That's why I wish so much that I hadn't turned away from it. Those 'lost years' I mentioned. Back in 2016 I indie published a couple of books. I look at them now and cringe, and wonder how I ever got the nerve as I feel they are so badly written (hey maybe that means my skills have improved?). However, I was finally following my dream. Then... my personal life blew up (I was going to write out what happened but I'll spare you). In my fear and panic I made some decisions and I didn't write much for years. I gave up on my dream. It's only now - 8 years later!!! - that I'm coming back to it and I regret that so much.

So yeah TLDR - don't give up on the dream. Keep writing.

Ohh my god a canceled bad syfy network show from ten years ago should not be getting me this worked up and yet!! The way s1 made it seem like miksa’s sister and sergio finding the kidnapped kids would be a huge thing in s2 but apparently he’s barely in s2 and she’s not in it at all???? WHY THE SEVERED HEADS THING?? I guess Hatake cut Constance’s head off and like highlander they can’t come back from that but?? Who was dr. hvit and why was his head out there? *Was* Hatake’s sole reason for everything just to get Julia out there and trigger her immortality? What was the deal in the opening scene with him and peter? Why did peter pass the virus on to julia? Did Hatake tell him to? Why does alan suck so much? Why did ilaria kidnap Julia’s mom if they didn’t know that julia existed? How did julia forget she lived there as a kid? Didn’t child julia notice how the cabin was apparently only two rooms and a bunch of creepy metal hallways? Did she never think it odd she wasn’t allowed outside? and how did that creepy shed guy sell her mom out? I think Hatake stabbed himself as part of a wounded gazelle gambit to get julia to trust him and bring him along? Why was Hiroyuki Sanada so into being in garbo sci fi shows in the early 2010s? It just feels like the creator watched highlander and the thing one weekend and said, “what if i mashed both of these things up but make it worse?”

All the kind of interesting things they started just didnt go anywhere. The kidnapped kids plotline is dropped and even Miksa just dies and doesnt matter at all. Anana had potential but was just SO flat and her romance with sergio SUCKED and is also just dropped completely. Alan sucked soooooo bad. Sarah's actor was not good and her arc was even worse I'm SORRY girl I cannot advocate for you. At least Constance was kind of interesting and a fun villain but she still made NO sense.

I think the whole motivation is supposed to be hatake wants to turn julia but that's. wh. it's so fucking bizarre. and also hot take that's not what I got from the scene where he sees shes got the eyes like I thought that was more a grief thing than an 'it worked' but WHAT DO I KNOW. Its sooooo convoluted and for what. what is the purpose.

I also assumed hatake was doing a 'look I'm innocent' thing to deflect any suspicion when he stabbed himself but it was still SO unnecessary tho I guess I respect the commitment to the bit.

It's like if the thing also had zombies and it was bad. I havent seen highlander so cant vouch for that but I believe u. why WAS hiroyuki sanada in so many bad scifi shows around then. I watched some of extant and man, it also sucked. he can do so much better. someone cast him in things that are actually good please i BEG you

I know this is niche one so here is the reasons why for each Bruin being what wrestler. This doesn’t have to do with appearances more character, entrance music and overall performance.

Charlie Coyle: John Cena is a classic good guy and also is from Mass

Jake DeBrusk: Scott Steiner, I know what your thinking who? Scott Steiner is famous for his math speech where he takes his 75% chance of winning and then adds his 66 2/3 per cents to get to him having a 141 2/3 chance of winning at sacrifice. All I know is that if I had to watch Jake do math it would go along the lines of this speech.

Nick Foligno: Stone Cold Steve Austin=bald and a badass, Nick Foligno= bald and a badass sometimes

Derek Forbort: Goldberg, Goldberg never loses he also makes dumb decisions. I’m now respect the epic highs of Forbort Hockey he never has lows now.

Trent Frederic: Mankind, most famous for doing crazy stunts like getting thrown off the top of the steel cage multiple times. This guy just keeps making bad decisions so he can fight which suits Trent

Brandon Carlo: Kevin Nash otherwise known as big daddy cool diesel, honestly I gave him this guy solely because his nickname.

Matt Grzelcyk: Rob Van Dam, small and agile guys. Also out of all the bruins the one I would pick to randomly appear in a syfy shark film like Van Dam has done would be Matt.

David Krejci: The Undertaker, a person that’s just been around a long time that is consistently good. Also I feel like Krejci would have a random motorbike phase like the undertaker did.

Charlie McAvoy: Randy Orton. He has a nickname that is the legend killer and the amount of veterans of seen McAvoy ass check to oblivion I feel like he earns that title.

David Pastrnak: Ric Flair, always had the most over the top beautiful robes just like pastas suits

Jeremy Swayman: Kurt Angle who is an Olympic gold medalist, famous for winning with a broken neck. The only American I could think of here with any type of Gold medal was Sway. Wait I just done research and he won Bronze, I’ll change my reasoning too that how he is getting treated now is the same as fans chanting ‘you suck’ in time with Kurt Angles entrance music

Pavel Zacha and Jakub Zboril: Edge and Christian. One of the best tag teams to exist, childhood friends like our two boys (not the tag team parts just the friendship part).

Hampus Lindholm: The million dollar man Ted DiBiase…..have you seen Lindholms contract?

Tomas Nosek: Rowdy Roddy Pipper, Nosek is one of the rowdiest players I’ve seen, he lives for the drama

Connor Clifton: Cactus Jack/ Mick Foley. This wrestler is also Mankind (see Freddy) but this is another one of his egos which is hardcore which suits Cliffy hockey.

Mike Reilly: Heath Slater, classic loser just a jobber. Mike was on my template so I had to find someone that suits my boy.

Craig Smith: The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels. Shawn Michaels is my all time favourite, his entrance music is sung by himself and is called sexy boy which suits Craig.

And that 5,000-mile-wide gunk raft is heading straight toward the Caribbean. Since 2011, scientists have been monitoring colossal blooms of sargassum seaweed that have hit popular beach destinations in Florida, Mexico, and elsewhere in the Caribbean. Sargassum seaweed is a type of large brown algae, and there are more than 300 species in the Sargassum genus worldwide. The two types most often found in the Atlantic Ocean are narrowleaf gulfweed (S. natans) and broadleaf gulfweed (S. fluitans). Seaweed clumps floating around Earth’s oceans is not always cause for alarm—they actually play an important role in healthy marine ecosystems. According to the Sargassum Information Hub, a joint project between the University of South Florida, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, and other institutions, these floating forests, at their normal distribution, provide a critical habitat for fish, marine mammals, seabirds, invertebrates, and reptiles. That includes threatened loggerhead sea turtles, which hide in the seaweed and eat crabs, mollusks, and various other critters that call sargassum home. Sargassum blooms, however—including the giant blob that's approaching the Caribbean—are too much of a good thing. Scientists have identified several likely mechanisms behind the extreme overgrowth that turns a healthy habitat into a dangerous sargassum bloom, including warming oceans, shifting hurricane patterns, and increased runoff from deforestation and excess fertilizer use, which boosts levels of nitrogen and other chemicals that promote rapid seaweed spread. Eventually, the huge mat of sargassum sucks all the oxygen from the water, which forces out turtles and other animals and creates a dead zone. For humans, the biggest problem with sargassum blooms occurs after it hits the beaches. Cleaning up the seaweed after it washes onto shore isn't just difficult; it can also be dangerous. As sargassum rots, it releases toxic hydrogen sulfide, which can cause respiratory problems in people. The seaweed also contains arsenic, so ingesting it or using it in fertilizer can also pose real health risks. fo3 was 20 years ago...that's kind of incredible. I'm really enjoying fo4. I didn't think I would like it years ago, because I'm not much of a syfy person. But it's not exactly syfy, is it? I like how it incorporates the whole "history will repeat itself," and mixed the future with the retro. I didn't realize how wasteland it would be. The syfy feels almost minimal in this game, despite the synths, the cyropods, etc. It's the perfect mix of the past, and fictional future.

“Absolutely not, this is not happening,”Kagome sucked at her teeth, making an audible noise. She smacked at her cheeks, trying to bring herself back into reality. Since it was obvious she was hallucinating. Kagome stared at the man sitting across from her, a cold stainless steel table the only thing between them.

Could she call him a man? Person?Humanoid? Kidnapper ? Definitely not fully human. If the long (and definitely silky looking) silver hair, golden eyes and purple jagged stripes on his cheeks weren’t a dead giveaway, then the (very cute) Akita like ears on top of his head surely were.

Not to mention the fact that they were currently sitting inside of…what could she call it?

Yeah, she was absolutely hallucinating. Wake up, Kagome! This isn’t some SYFY Series.

She’d had to much to drink at Sango’s party, and after a fight with Hojo-kun, that man could not take a hint; she’d opted on stumbling her way home down the crowded streets of Shibuya towards the nearest train station.

Kagome didn’t even make it close to the station. She rounded one wrong corner, then flash. She couldn’t remember anything after that, just a blinding white light. Now she was here, playing one long ass staring contest with—

“Absolutely not?” He repeated her phrase back to her, and was that a smirk ? Was he laughing at her definite hallucinogenic experience?

Especially not half human handsome ones, and more so, people like Kagome did not get abducted. She’d just landed her dream job for fucks sake! This was all just some dream. That has to be it.

He leaned forward, speaking once again, but the noise was muffled. Wait, they were talking to her again.

Kagome cleared her throat and raised an eyebrow, “Excuse me?”

“I said, you’re welcome for the rescue. What were you mumbling “absolutely not”?” He cocked an eyebrow right back at her, and Kagome tried not to let her jaw go slack.

Apparently aliens didn’t just speak some weird form of native alien language. She’d thought he’d just been repeating her without any concept of what she was saying.

“So you can communicate with me?” She tried to hide her extreme surprise.

“I’ve been trying to talk to you this entire time,” he flicked his hair over his shoulder with a claw tipped hand, that damn smirk still plastered on his face,” I was beginning to think you couldn’t communicate with me after all that insane babbling you were doing.”

The nerve of this guy!

“Well why would I want to communicate with someone who just swooped me up off the sidewalk like that?” Kagome quipped back,folding her arms across her chest.

“Remind me next time not to save you,” he gritted out, scooting his chair away from the table, but a loud booming voice came over an intercom, filling the space they were sharing.

“Inuyasha,” the voice boomed, “sit. You didn’t bring her here for nothing.”

Inuyasha.

His name was Inuyasha, and he was growling?

Kagome eyed him wearily now, shrinking into herself slightly as he slumped back into the seat across from her. Was she imagining it or did his gaze soften when he looked at her just now?

A whoosh of breath came from Inuyasha, his hand cradling his chin as he gazed at her, “I suppose, I should start at the beginning.”
