Chapter 5: Part 1: The Vale Of Shadows
Raining Hellfire Series | Season One
Word Count: 6,233 words.
Warnings: swearing, flashbacks to past trauma, attending a funeral, finding a gun, kiss, mentions of killing (let me know if I've missed any)
[A/N: This chapter is going to be split into two parts because I just kept writing and writing and it was way too long so enjoy! Also, don't want to spoil anything but I'm screaming internally I love eddie]
Part 1: The Vale Of Shadows
When you and Nancy had walked home together, all you could talk about was the possibility that Will and Barb were alive.
You couldn’t lie, you were hopeful. It made you that much happier. But you still didn’t have all the facts. And you knew what that meant; you were going to have to talk to the party.
And, like you had somehow conjured him from air, you and Nancy found Dustin sat on the Wheeler’s front door steps. He sprung up as soon as he saw you, running over.
“There you are! We’ve been waiting for you, there’s so much we need to talk-” His ramble was cut short when he saw Nancy was beside you, his eyes widening.
“Talk about what?” She queried.
“Um… D&D.” He said, smiling. It was clearly a nervous smile. He wasn’t good at the lying thing.
“I promised the boys I’d help them out with their new campaign.” You said to Nancy and she laughed.
“Really? I thought you hated D&D.”
“No, I just… didn’t understand it. But they needed a fourth so I promised I’d help them. They’re going to explain it to me.”
Nancy nodded but she still looked unconvinced. You leaned in to her like you didn’t want Dustin to overhear.
“I just felt bad. Ever since Will…” You whispered and she quickly nodded.
“Well… have fun?” She finally said. “I… have a few things to work on.” She looked at you and you nodded back. She was going to put together a plan.
“That was a close one.” Dustin sighed, wiping imaginary sweat from his forehead. “How did you do that?”
“Practice.” You simply said, walking him inside and entering the basement.
“Finally!” Mike exclaimed, sitting next to El who… was in disguise?
“...What did I miss?” You looked at each of them, eyebrows furrowed.
“I got this.” Dustin said, holding his hand out against his friends when they opened their mouths to speak and clearing his throat. “El tuned into our radio and Mike thought he could hear Will so he invited us over and we were all like ‘dude, no way’ but he insisted. And then we needed a bigger radio so we disguised El in one of Nancy’s old dresses and a wig and pretended she was a Swedish cousin just so we could sneak her into the school to use the A.V. club’s new awesome radio which you can’t even imagine how cool it is, like it’s frequency-”
“Dustin!” The other boys say in frustration.
“Right, sorry. So we got in undetected thanks to our improvisation skills and El did her magic thing on the radio and that’s when we heard it. Will. He’s alive but stuck somewhere. Oh, and it took a lot out of El so we came back here to let her rest.” He finished, smiling to himself for explaining so quickly.
“I… honestly don’t know how to respond to that.” You said, pinching the bridge of your nose. “Okay, so this radio… you really heard Will?”
“Yes.” Lucas sighed.
“That makes sense. I think Will was taken by something, and I think it took Barb as well. They’re both alive we just need to get to them.” You said.
“What was Will saying?” Mike asked himself, his hands in his pockets. “Like home… like home… but dark?”
“And empty.” Lucas remembered, his elbows on his knees as he clasped his hands into a rest for his head.
“Empty and cold.” Dustin chimed in, “Wait, did he say cold?”
“I don’t know. The stupid radio kept going in and out.” Lucas sighed.
“It’s like riddles in the dark.” Dustin muttered.
You claimed Mike’s now empty seat next to El and she smiled up at you.
“Like home. Like his house?” Mike paced.
“Or maybe like Hawkins.” Lucas volunteered.
“Upside down.” El spoke up.
“Upside down?” You pondered, looking at the girl.
“What?” Lucas shook his head.
“Upside down!” Mike said, walking over to their D&D board and flipping it over. “When El showed us where Will was, she flipped the board over, remember? Upside down. Dark. Empty.”
“Do you understand what he’s talking about?” Lucas looked at you and Dustin. You had all followed Mike to sit around the table.
“No.” You both responded.
“Guys, come on, think about it.”
“Like… some sort of alternate reality or something?” You suggested, resting your chin on your hand. You hadn’t slept in a while and it was catching up to you.
“Yeah... well, no.” Mike said and Lucas groaned. “When El took us to find Will, she took us to his house, right?”
“Yeah. And he wasn’t there.”
You looked over at El who was listening intently.
“But what if he was there? What if we just couldn’t see him? What if he was on the other side?”
Lucas and Dustin still sported confused looks. You leant back in your chair, slowly beginning to follow along.
“What if this is Hawkins and…” He points to the board before flipping it over to the darker side, “This is where Will is? The Upside Down.”
“Okay, I get it.” You said, leaning in.
“Like the Vale of Shadows.” Dustin gasped.
“Okay, now I don’t get it.” You sighed, all three of them shaking their heads at you.
You were in for a long night of them explaining D&D to you. At least that meant you didn’t technically lie to Nancy.
Dustin grabbed what you assumed was some sort of D&D guide book and flipped to the pages he was looking for.
“The Vale of Shadows is a dimension that is a dark reflection or echo of our world. It is a place of decay and death. A plane out of phase. A place of monsters. It is right next to you, and you don't even see it.” He read, looking up as it perfectly described what you were all looking for.
“An alternate dimension. That’s exactly what I said.” You say, throwing your hands up.
“You said alternate reality.” Mike pointed out.
“Oh… shut up.” You leant back in your chair.
“But… how do we get there?” Lucas asked. His voice was quiet.
“You cast Shadow Walk.” Dustin nodded.
“In real life, dummy.” Lucas was barely holding on to his sanity at this point.
“We can’t Shadow Walk, but…” Dustin looked over at El. “Maybe she can.”
“Do you know how we get there? To the Upside Down?” You asked her. She just silently shook her head.
“Oh, my God!” Lucas sighed, defeated.
“We’ll figure it out.” You said, standing up and walking to the basement door.
“Wait. Where are you going?” Dustin asked as they all stood.
“Home.” You replied. They all just stared at you.
“I’m going to do some research, okay? I swear I’ve read a paper about alternate dimensions before. I was looking into it when I was bored once.”
“Nerd.” Dustin laughed.
“Really?” You tilted your head, “What’s Shadow Walk?”
“Oh!” Dustin said excitedly, taking the bait. “An illusion spell that helps- Hey!”
Lucas had whacked him behind the head.
“Dude!” He he widened his eyes at his friend’s gullibility.
“Oh.” Dustin finally said, realising. “Well played, Y/n. Well played.”
You smiled and gave him a small salute, opening the door and walking to the front door.
“Y/n! Glad I caught you.” Karen said, rushing over as you opened the front door. “Are you…”
“I’m okay.” You smiled at her.
“Good. I just wanted to let you know about Will’s funeral. We’re going as a family, to support the Byers’ and… Mike.” She sounded sad as she let her eyes drift to the basement door. If only she knew.
“Oh. I forgot about that.”
“Well, I’m sure Nancy has a dress you can borrow and we’ll be leaving at 9.” She said, looking at you. “But you don’t need to go, sweetheart, it’s up to you.”
“I’ll go.” You forced a smile. “And I have a dress-”
The black dress that lay haunted in your closet. You haven’t worn it in a while.
“Oh, good. We’ll see you tomorrow then.” She turned to walk back into the house, “I hope you get some sleep, too.” She noticed the dark circles under your eyes.
“I will.” You reply, already out of the door. You carefully closed it and leant against the wood with a sigh.
Deep breaths, Y/n. You did your best to calm yourself. It’s just another funeral.
“Y/n.”
“Don’t.” You said very quietly. You didn’t have the energy to argue with your boyfriend on today of all days.
“We just need to talk.” He said, his hand on your back as he tried to lead you away.
“No.” You didn’t move.
“Y/n, come on.” He looked confused. He wasn’t used to you not obeying his every word.
“No.” You finally turned to him, tear streaks staining your cheeks. “I’m not doing this with you. Not now, not today, not ever.”
“Y/n-”
“Did you not hear me?” You glared at him and he took a step back, not liking this new side to you.
“I am at a god damn funeral. Someone is dead! I don’t give a shit what you want to say. Frankly, your problems are the least of my worries right now. I told you I didn’t want to go to the party. I told you! And you still dragged me there. And now she’s… she’s…” You looked down at the casket. Beneath the wooden finish was someone you had betrayed.
“And who’s fault is that?” He glared, walking away and leaving you in tears.
Even though you knew Will was alive, it didn’t stop the sadness you felt as you slipped on that black dress.
You didn’t have any nice shoes so you slipped on your black boots and hoped that it wasn’t disrespectful. Pulling your hair back with a clip, you thought this might have been the most sophisticated you had ever looked.
“It’ll be okay, kid.” Your uncle was stood in the doorway of your room, a sad smile on his face. He could see you fiddling with the ring on your right hand.
“I see you found her ring.” He said quietly. You had found it in one of the boxes of your aunt’s things. You remembered it from when you were little.
“I’m sorry, I can take it off-”
“No. Keep it. It’s time it was passed to the next person.” He smiled. He looked tired, but sober. It was a rare sight for you. “I was the one that gave her that ring.”
You could almost see the memories dancing in front of his eyes.
“Really?
“Oh, yeah. My older cousin gave me it, his wife gave him it, and so on. It’s been passed around for as long as I can remember.”
“Wow.” You looked at the ring on your hand. “How do you know who to give it to?”
“Good question. I never quite understood it. You see,” He took a step forward, moving to the bed and perching on the end, “When my cousin handed it to me, he told me it was for strength. It wasn’t until I met your aunt that I realised it was something we gave to those we care about. Mind you, it didn’t have to be a ring.”
“To think it could have been cold, hard cash.” You sighed sarcastically, earning a low chuckle from your uncle.
“That would have been nice. But the ring… just feels more personal.” He nodded. He sat for a while before letting out a deep sigh and standing back up, facing you.
“You should keep it. Funerals… they’re hard to swallow sometimes.”
“Yeah.” You agreed quietly, staring at your reflection.
“You’re brave.” He said sincerely, stopping just outside your door, “I know how hard this must be. Believe me. You’re stronger than you think.”
“So I guess I don’t need the ring anymore.” You half-heartedly laughed, twiddling the ring.
“Oh, I still think you need it a little longer. Stay safe, kid.”
“I will.” And then he wondered off into the kitchen. You heard the fridge door open and the sound of hissing. You gave yourself one last look in the mirror and headed outside.
“Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you…”
You were stood in the cemetery beside the Wheeler’s, Mike, Dustin and Lucas to the left of you. You were barely listening. You just kept your head focused on the ground, trying to distract your mind.
“Just wait till we tell Will that Jennifer Hayes was crying at his funeral.” You heard Dustin whisper as they all looked over to the crying blonde girl. You smiled a little before Karen leant forward and shushed them. The boys kept forgetting that to the rest of the world Will was dead.
At the end, you each walked past the grave, leaving a rose on the coffin and moving on to give your condolences. You muttered yours, not daring to meet Joyce’s gaze. Everyone thought she was crazy. You didn’t want to make her believe that Will was dead too, not when you were so close to finding him.
You looked around you, seeing that the parents were holding onto their children like they would suddenly suffer the same fate. It meant that you didn’t have a chance of talking to the boys about your findings now. So instead you scouted the cemetery for Nancy and Jonathan. And… they were nowhere to be seen.
So much for working together, you thought as you wondered further away from the crowd. You needed a distraction, any distraction. Standing in a field of graves wasn’t exactly calming your nerves.
Then you noticed it. The trees that lined the far end held a shadow. A shadow that moved quickly. Your breath hitched.
You looked around again, hoping to find them but it was like Nancy and Jonathan didn’t want to be found. You looked back at the trees again, still catching a glimpse of the shadow.
“Don’t be stupid, Y/n.” You whispered to yourself. But your brain had a different action in mind.
So you started walking. Towards the trees. Towards the shadow.
You kept at a distance, following the figure’s movement through the trees. You were far away enough to not be seen but it meant you could barely see who the shadow was. Or what the shadow was.
The figure wasn’t being quiet; you could hear each crunch of leaves and twigs beneath their feet. You just hoped that they couldn’t hear you. You kept at your pace, making sure not to lose sight of them while trying not to trip over any tree roots. You almost hit a tree when the figure stopped abruptly. You didn’t know what caused this sudden halt but you were quick to try and find something to protect yourself with.
The ground next to you gave you possible choices for a makeshift weapon. You reached down and grabbed a sturdy branch that had fallen. You gripped it tightly, wishing you had that baseball bat your uncle kept by the door.
You slowly approached, eyes focused on your target. You weren’t sure how it would play out if it attacked you, but you were sure as hell going to strike first. The closer you got, the more it looked… human. They were sat at a bench that had been deserted, drumming their fingers on the worn surface. Headphones barely covering their wild tame of hair.
You dropped the branch, relief rushing through your body.
“Eddie?”
He didn’t turn, your headphones blocking you out.
“Eds!” You placed your hand on his shoulder and he almost jumped out of his skin. He sprung up and got into a karate stance, his arms held out in front of him. The sight made you double over with laughter.
“Y/n.” He breathed, removing the headphones and letting them rest around his neck. “Hey, it’s not funny. I could have-”
“Karate-chopped me straight to hell?” You laughed. His eyes brightened as he smiled at you.
“You never know.” He ran his hand through his hair and you calmed down, taking a seat.
He pretended to shake off his reaction, walking to the other side of the bench when he looked up and stopped. He just stared at you.
“What?” You say, your hand raising to your face, “Is there something on me? I swear if it’s a spider I’ll-”
“No! No. You just-”
“What?” Your inner panic was showing. Alternate dimensions with human-eating creatures you could probably handle. A spider in your hair? That was the ultimate fear.
“You look different.” He said, sitting.
“Different good?” You asked, looking down at yourself.
“Yeah! Not that you didn’t look good before. I just mean that you look… different. From usual, I mean.”
“Thank you?” You said. Deep down, you were blushing.
“Uh, so…” He clasped his hands together. “Not that I’m not happy to see you or anything but… what brings you to the middle of the woods all dressed up like that?” He smiled again. You could barely concentrate when he smiled.
“Funeral.” You managed to say. His smile faded and you snapped back into reality, clearing your throat. “Uh… Will Byers. It’s his funeral.”
“Oh. I’m sorry.” He said sincerely.
“Yeah…” You replied quietly.
“Can I… help at all? I don’t know what I can do but-”
“Oh you don’t have to. I’m okay. I mean… it’s upsetting, of course it is but…” You struggled to find words that didn’t suggest you thought he was still alive, “I’ve had time to mourn.”
“Then why do you look so sad?” He smiled softly, seeing through you.
“I-” You took a breath. “I don’t like funerals. Not that anyone does, it’s a shitty occasion. I’ve just been to more than I like to admit.”
You looked up and he was agreeing with your words.
“I get it.”
For a few seconds, you just sat in silence before you took in the scene.
“Wait. Is this the famous bench I’ve heard so much about?” You changed the subject, your eyes widening with your smile.
“Thank you for noticing.” He smiled back, sweeping his arm out to display the bench in question. “This baby has gotten me through 5 whole years of self-reflection. You see, I’m working on myself.” He held his hand to his heart, sarcasm marking his words.
“So it’s a spiritual bench. I feel honoured to be sat here.”
“You know,” He leant forward and you mirrored his movements, “You still haven’t told me what you’re doing in the middle of the forest. Away from the funeral.”
“I- I thought I saw something.” You admitted, your mind relaying to the forgotten tree branch you deserted earlier.
“So you came into the woods. Alone. With no way to protect yourself?” He smirked, hints of worry in his eyes.
“You don’t think I can protect myself?” You countered, avoiding the question.
“What? No! I mean, I definitely think you can protect yourself.” He stuttered, “I think Tommy’s face would agree.” He laughed.
Your own face has healed pretty nicely, the cut on your cheek now just a mere scratch. Barely noticeable.
You smiled, giggling slightly when you remembered the look on Tommy’s face.
“I, uh… I should probably go.” You finally said, tilting your head and smiling at him. For a while he just stared at you until he suddenly grabbed his heart and sprung himself onto the ground, rolling in the leaves.
You quickly stood up in shock, checking if he was okay. He stood just as quickly as you did and walked toward the tree behind him, laughing. It was inevitable that you would start laughing along too.
“Want to get rid of me that quickly? I’m hurt.” He smiled, fiddling with his hair.
You walked up to him, reaching your hand up to grab some leaves that were clinging to his messy curls. He stilled his movement to allow you access.
“Leaves.” You chuckled, removing them and letting them fall to the ground.
Neither of you moved. You knew you should be getting back. You needed to talk to Jonathan and Nancy and you needed to relay information to the boys so that you could try and figure out how to get to the ‘Upside Down’. But right now, you that’s not what you wanted.
You wanted to pretend like everything was okay. You wanted to focus on something other than the world that was collapsing around you. You wanted to feel safe. You wanted him.
And he wanted you.
He leant down, closing the distance. As soon as his lips brushed yours, you knew that it wasn’t just what you wanted, but what you needed.
You pressed further into him, letting the kiss happen. His hand cupped the back of your head as you slid your arms around his neck. In this moment, it felt like heaven. You didn’t ever want to leave this feeling. You felt safe, you felt wanted. And everything felt right.
A loud snap of a twig caused the kiss to break as you both spun your heads to the direction of the intrusion. At first you didn’t see anything, but the hairs on the back of your neck disagreed with your eyes. You scrunched your eyebrows, looking between the trees. A flash of grey.
“I thought for sure someone was coming to interrupt our moment again.” Eddie chuckled. You looked back at the boy to see his smile that made your heart swoon. No matter how much you wanted to stay, you knew that thing was out there. You needed to find the others. You needed to get Eddie out of here.
“Oh shit.” He said, “I’m late.” He glanced at his watch and looked at you, taking his time to step away from you.
“For what?” You asked quietly. At least it meant he wouldn’t be in the woods for much longer.
“Uh… this club. It just started, it’s nothing.” He smiled shyly.
“What club?” You laughed when he gave you a doubtful expression, “Seriously. I want to know.”
“Maybe next time.” He chuckled.
“There’s a next time?” You played along, your eyes flashing to the space where you had spotted the grey silhouette.
“Always.” He simply said, as he planted a kiss on your forehead, “If you want there to be, of course.”
“I’d like that.” You smiled at him. Your heart was telling you to stay in this moment with him. But your mind was screaming at you to leave. “Now go, don’t be late for your mysterious club.”
“I’ll see you soon, Queen of the Demogorgons.” He laughed one last time before he scooped up your Walkman and walked back the way you came, in the opposite direction from whatever creature was roaming the woods. You let out a deep sigh, your heart racing.
You grabbed the branch you had wielded earlier, making your way back to the cemetery. Just to be safe.
“I mean, it's all within a mile or something.”
“What is?” You asked, their heads reclining up to see you stood right in front of them. Your friends’ faces twisted with guilt.
“Sorry.” Nancy said, “I was going to come get you but we just got so wrapped up in-”
“It’s fine. Whatever. You got a plan?” You looked at them both. Nancy and Jonathan were huddled up in front of the rusted metal fence that lined the graves, out of sight of everyone else.
“Kind of.” She said, avoiding your gaze.
“Whatever this thing is, it's... it's not travelling far.” Jonathan looked up at you, pointing to the map he was holding. You crouched beside him, taking a look.
“You want to go out there.” Nancy looked at him, determination in her words.
“We might not find anything.” He admitted, glancing at you.
“I found something.” Nancy said.
“So did I…” You added, Nancy looking at you. You kept getting the feeling she didn’t want you there.
“But that was a while ago. It could have, I don’t know, migrated in that time or something.” He said, shaking his head.
“It’s in those woods. I think I saw it again. No. I know I saw it again.” Both of them looked at you, you shrugged. “I don’t think it’s leaving. Maybe… maybe there’s something that’s keeping it there.”
“And if we do see it…” Nancy wavered for a moment. “Then what?”
“We kill it.” Jonathan was looking between the both of you now, waiting for an answer.
“What?” You muttered, not wanting to draw any unwanted attention. “How the hell are we going to do that?”
He abruptly stood up, folding the map up and shoving it into his coat pocket. You and Nancy struggled to keep up with his pace as he headed toward a car that you didn’t recognise.
He opened the door and pulled out what you think was a bobby pin and began to hack the lock on the glove box. As soon as you saw what he was doing, you took a step in front of the open door, blocking anyone from seeing your friend commit a small crime.
“What are you doing?” Nancy, on the other hand, was being much less inconspicuous.
“Just give me a second.” He said before you heard the glove box open. You still kept a look out, trusting he had found what he was looking for.
“Are you serious?” You heard Nancy say and you spun around to see Jonathan, the boy who wouldn’t hurt a fly, holding a gun.
“What? You want to find this thing and take another photo? Yell at it?” He said, grabbing the bullets and getting out of the car.
“He’s got a point.” You said to no one in particular.
“This is a terrible idea.” Nancy crossed her arms.
“Yeah, well, it's the best we've got.”
“At least we have something to protect ourselves.” You placed a hand on Nancy’s shoulder but she shrugged it off, taking a step back.
“What? You can tell someone, but they're not gonna believe you. You know that.” Jonathan said, noticing Nancy’s unusual behaviour.
“Your mom would.”
“She’s been through enough.” He said quietly.
“She deserves to know.” Nancy insisted and you rolled your eyes. They were taking so long that part of you just wanted to grab the gun and take care of it yourself.
“Yeah, and I’ll tell her…” He looked at you and then back at Nancy, “when this thing is dead.”
“It took Will. And it took Barb.” You said quietly, looking back to the woods, “We need to stop it before it hurts someone else.”
“But what happens if it hurts one of us.” Nancy mumbled before she walked back to her family, avoiding your gaze.
“Why do I get the feeling she doesn’t like me very much lately.” You asked Jonathan.
“Her mind is just focused on Barb.” He sighed, looking at you for a moment. You could see there was something he was holding back.
“What aren’t you telling me, Jonathan?” You tilted your head.
“I don’t want to ruin anything between you-” “It’s already ruined. And I don’t like people keeping secrets from me.”
“Okay. Okay, just… remember that she’s just going through something right now.”
You just stared at him, waiting for the reveal.
“Right. She, uh, might have said that you… you didn’t care. About Barb. Or anything, in particular. That you were more focused on the Munson guy than you are on finding Barb.” He looked up from the ground with a wince on his face, patiently waiting for you to react.
“Thanks for telling me.” You said quietly.
“Y/n-” Jonathan was cut off when he saw that people were calling for him.
“Time for the wake.”
“You act like it’s all about you, Y/n. Try caring about someone for once in your miserable life.”
The memory replayed in your mind over and over again. There were people filling the space of the home you were once familiar with. It used to feel warm and safe. Now, you could feel eyes burning into you, begging you to leave.
You stood from the chair you had sunk into once the wake started and made your way across the floorboards, heading out of the door. You tried to ignore the glares of the people that barely knew you. You stepped out into the cold atmosphere, hugging your torso as you walked up the path, turning to look back at the house.
You craned your neck to look up at the corner window, remembering nights where you had laughed, even cried, with someone that you weren’t ever going to see again. All because she thought you didn’t care enough.
But the truth is, you cared too much.
“Y/N!” You heard Dustin’s strangely mixed whisper and scream caught your attention, causing you to look up from your empty plate. Your head was resting on your hand as you turned slightly to see the three boys.
“Hey guys.”
They all sat down at the table, leaning forward and looking at you.
“What?” You asked, your voice a little harsher than you intended it to be.
“So?” Mike said, unbothered, “What did you find out?”
They all nodded, still looking at you.
“It’s creepy when you stare at me like that.” You muttered, straightening up, “Okay so the paper I found was on Hugh Everett's ‘Many-Worlds Interpretation’.”
“What?” Lucas asked.
“Right.” You leaned in, trying to find the right words to explain it to them. “Basically, there are parallel universes. Just like our world, but just infinite variations of it-”
“Yeah, that’s not what we’re talking about.” Mike interrupted.
“Yeah, no, we were thinking more of an evil dimension like the Vale of Shadows.” Dustin added.
“Not this again.” You sighed, slumping your head down to the table.
“I don’t know if you remember but the Vale-”
“Yeah, yeah, its an echo of the material plane, where necrotic and shadow magic can blah, blah, blah.” You said, surprising them that you managed to take in all the information they had given you last night. “Now, will you please let me finish.”
“Go ahead, Y/n.” Lucas nodded.
“Thank you. So… how do I explain this?” You grabbed your empty plate and searched for a pen. Noticing one across the table, you pointed at it and Lucas passed it over to you. You then began to draw the idea you were trying to explain.
“Okay. This is all theoretical, keep that in mind. Picture… an acrobat… standing on a tightrope. Now, the tightrope is our dimension. And our dimension has rules. You can move forwards, or backwards. But, what if... right next to our acrobat, there is a flea? Now, the flea can also travel back and forth, just like the acrobat. Right?” You added, making sure that they were following along.
“Right.” They all murmured, staring at the paper plate.
“Okay, so this is where I think you’ll find the theory really interesting. The flea can also travel this way along the side of the rope. He can even go…” You moved your pen down the plate, underneath your roughly drawn line, pausing for a little dramatic effect before drawing your little dot. “Underneath the rope.”
“Upside down.” They all breathed, looking at eachother.
“Exactly.” You nodded, a smile on your face.
“But we’re not the flea, we’re the acrobat.” Mike stated.
“Uh, yes, I guess.”
“So we can’t go upside down.” Lucas sighed, defeated.
“Actually… there is a way but it was written to be impossible.” You said, dropping the plate and putting your chin back onto your hand.
“Well what is it?” Lucas leaned in.
“You’d have to create a massive amount of energy. More than humans are even capable of creating at the moment. It would open up some kind of tear in time and space and create some kind of…” You waved your hand, looking for a word. You just grabbed the paper plate, folding it in half and plunging the pen through it.
“Like a gate?” Dustin suggested.
“Sure. Like a gate.” You agreed.
“But… but what if this gate already existed?” Mike asked, giving you a knowing look.
“You think one’s already opened up?” You tried to remember what you had learned from your research last night. You were definitely smart but you also had a bad memory problem these days. “Uh, well, it would disrupt gravity, the magnetic field… uh, our environment. It might even swallow us up whole.”
You looked at Mike who seemed deep in thought about it all. Lucas had his head in his hands and Dustin was looking at you with a goofy smile.
“What?”
“I always knew you were secretly smart.” He said.
“Secretly?” You questioned, “Wait, did you all think I was dumb?”
“Uh…” Lucas tried to change the topic but came up with nothing.
“Boys, it’s time to go.” Dustin’s mother approached the table. You’ve met her a few times before, she was always nice to you. But, as much as she was lovely, most of her time was spent on her cat rather than her own child.
“We… were thinking of going to Mike’s, mom.” Dustin said with a sweet smile, “So we can… have our own wake. You know, in the basement.”
They all smiled up at the woman while she stuttered.
“Uh, well, I suppose… if it’s alright with Mrs. Wheeler…”
“Thanks, mom!” Dustin jumped up and hugged her before they all ran outside.
“It was nice to see you again.” You smiled, hurrying after them.
You caught them talking outside with Mrs Wheeler who began nodding. You supposed that meant that they were going to talk to El. If anyone could create a gate to the Upside Down, it would be her.
You looked back at the house and saw that Jonathan was stood in the corner, attempting to avoid his father.
“Hey, Y/n! You coming?” Dustin ran up to you, taking your arm to lead you with them.
“I… I can’t.” You said and he looked up at you with a frown. “Look, I have stuff I need to take care of. And I think… it will help us find Will, okay?”
He still didn’t look convinced. “But we need your help.” He added, pouting.
“Don’t make that face. You know I can’t say no to that face.” You sighed, rubbing your temple, “Okay… how about I try and give you a pointer-” You stopped, a thought popping up into your mind.
“What? What is it?”
“Compasses.” You said.
“What about them?”
“If this gate is disturbing the magnetic field… then the compasses will show the way.” You were going to explain more when you saw Jonathan ushering you over, pointing to the back of the room. “Look, I really need to go now. I’ll speak to you later!” And with that, you hurried back inside.
“Way to be cryptic!” You heard Dustin say in the distance. You wish you could be spending more time with them, but you had a mission of your own.
As soon as Jonathan could see you were inside, he made his way across the room as you followed his direction. You ended up in his room, Nancy in the corner. As soon as you saw her, you felt a twinge of something you didn’t recognise in your stomach.
“Okay, we’re here.” Jonathan said, closing the door quietly.
“What’s up?” You asked, avoiding her eyes.
“Tonight.” Was all she said before made her way over to you.
“Is… definitely a night.” You nodded. Jonathan gave you a weird look and you saw he was trying to hide a smile.
“No. Tonight. We’re going to kill it.” She said with so much determination it almost scared you.
“Okay.” Jonathan agreed. “Okay, tonight.”
“Y/n?” She looked at you as if you would say no.
“I’m in. But you and I are gonna need weapons. Jonathan’s got a gun but what if it’s faster than we think?”
“What do you have in mind?” The boy next to you asked.
“I know it’s not much but I have pretty sturdy baseball bats.” You shrugged. If you had time, you would make them a little more dangerous. “Obviously the gun is Plan A.”
“Meet me out back in two hours.” Jonathan nodded at you both.
“Let’s get your bats and change our clothes.” Nancy said to you once you had both left the house. She was rigid, like she was purposely trying to pretend it wasn’t you she was talking to.
“Hey Nance…” You began quietly. You noticed she softened a little at the nickname. “I’m sorry.”
“What?” She stopped and turned to you.
“I know I’ve been all over the place lately. And I just wanted you to know… I’m here. With you. And we’re gonna find Barb because that’s my top priority right now.” You took a deep breath, waiting for her reply.
“Okay.” Was all she said. She gave you a quick smile but continued walking without another word.
“Okay.” You whispered to yourself.
You just felt like you’d screwed up.

STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK - examples are linked!
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make a masterlist or graphic of your favourite faceclaims. A masterlist of names. Plot ideas or screencaps from a music video preformed by an artist. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags. Guides on culture and customs.
