The reason given was Hardik’s fitness being a concern. Unless he was a certainty for all games, it was not a risk worth taking. Surya, to be fair, has done an excellent job as skipper and his handling of Sanju Samson, for example, has helped get the best out of the merfcurial wicketkeeper-batter.  The captaincy isn’t the point anymore. Surya has settled into the job and is doing it well. But what about vice-captaincy? In the T20 side against England, Axar Patel has been named Surya’s deputy. And once more, Pandya has been overlooked. First things first – this is not a reflection on Axar, who has done well for India in the opportunities that he has been given. He could even captain Delhi Capitals in the forthcoming IPL.  But that doesn’t explain why Pandya wasn’t chosen.
