“I was musing captions for this 📸 of our house & streetscape & specifically why Victorian houses are a perfect backdrop for all things holiday & enchanted. But when I started typing “why are Victorian houses …” into Google, it auto-filled “why are Victorian houses so creepy.” 👇 the 🐇 hole I go. Top article was a 2016 Scientific American blog w/ this thumbnail blurb: “The world had become a corrupt, dirty place, and Victorian-style houses were a physical manifestation of this stain; they represented the persistence of corruption and thoughtlessness that was thought to have originated in the Gilded Age.” Stain? Thoughtlessness? And here I thought Victorian architecture was just all things fairytale & fantastic. Thankfully, the intelligentsia @ Scientific American & Google predictions are here to correct wrongthink & remind me the Victorian era was a period of great social disparity & crappy mass-produced goods (as if ditching Victorians would change this). Another article went so far as to praise the progressive post-war architectural elite who advocated mowing down the Victorians or at least gutting & modernizing all of our quirky, lurking 19th century McMansions. Lest they be here to suggest sins and venalities of our past. Erase them all! Science says Victorians are mementos of all that is vulgar, crass & corrupt! Visions of progress must dance in your head! That’s an order. Personally, I think Victorian homes became maligned b/c FINALLY fanciful & unique architecture was made available to the hoi polloi. Nothing pisses off the uber elite more than prosperity of the masses. Plus some ppl are just super judgy & controlling & most happy when they’re ruining someone else’s fun. Anyway, that’s my rant for the month. May your Halloween be happy. And if you ever have a chance to live in a Victorian, do it. They really are magic. 💫🧙” Image & caption from @thebeigeblues
