I got to bed last night and put my ear plugs in. I could still hear the ventilation system hissing away and I thought about how I was never going to get to slee…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I wake up 5.20 am, still excited to be here in Calgary. I grab my stuff and head out the door, camera in hand to turn left and left and again and start walking down toward the river. The light is still low so I’ve got the camera racked up to a sensitivity of iso 2000 which lets me shoot in lower light but can give odd red dots on the images.
At first, I don’t see much to take photos of, a few nice reflections in windows, a statue of a pilot and people going to work but then I head into a park and the sun is just coming over the horizon and playing a good tune on the trees. I spy a few black squirrels and some swirls in the river that look…nice…(word failure again).
I stand up from taking a shot along the length of the river and hear a rustle behind me. As I turn around a Beaver (or Otter, I don’t do animals…could have been a swimming Badger for all I know) is looking straight up at me from the other side of the bridge and I just don’t have the chance to take a shot before his head pops down under the water again. I sneak over toward the water’s edge and sit quietly for a couple of minutes and finally I spy him again and get off a few shots. I’d have loved to have caught what I originally saw when I first turned round but hopefully I’ve got something to take away.
The light in the park was beautiful and I could have stayed longer but I needed to get back for the sake of coffee and a shower. Andy messages me at just after seven so it was lucky I got back. He’s in a fine mood although his arms are feeling the strain from all the getting around yesterday. I think the place is doing us both good; hopefully, some of this Canadian cheerfulness will rub off on the both of us miserable Brits.

We’re heading off to Calgary zoo today with Charlotte and Chollo so decided to have breakfast in the hotel. I had a ‘slim’ omelette which was surprisingly tasty and Andy had a mound of egg, sausage, bacon, salmon and other bits and pieces that left him with a huge grin of satisfaction. He’s still getting used to the idea of having free coffee refills and so got himself a caffeine high to kick off his day.
We wandered off to the outside hotel pool that’s some three floors up and in the open air. The pool was drained but we got some nice views of the city and the chance to do some people watching.
Off to the zoo we go in a taxi driven by a guy who only recently came over from India; he drove with a vague sense of road discipline and certain disregard of safety that made us both pay a lot of attention. Having met up with Charlotte and Chollo we spent a long lazy day meandering about the enclosures taking pictures and have conversations over bits of the past and what Charlie is planning to do and…stuff. It was really nice to spend time with her. I see her after two years away and I remember how much I miss her every day. Bollocks…I’m getting mushy. It was fun but after a few hours my feet started to ache and Andy was getting a blister on his hand so we headed back to the car, back to the hotel and here I am.

As Calgary has a large Indian community we decide that we’ll try the local curry. Chollo wasn’t able to make it but we met up with Charlotte at the Green Chilly in some outskirt of Calgary that had a look that made me half expect to see Saul Goodman pop out of a nail salon. I’m not sure how popular the place is but on this particular evening, we were the only patrons; not that we minded too much as the conversation rumbled along as the beers went down.
On the menu was goat curry and, in the spirit of holiday adventure, I thought I would give it a try. It’s an unusual taste. It had the greasiness of lamb but the texture of beef and each mouthful tasted worse than the next. The sauce was nice but goat clearly isn’t for me. As we get back to the hotel the ground suddenly shifts…no…not the ground, although it feels like it, the goat curry is on the move. Time for a period of privacy…oh lordy.
To Calgary…the zoo and rumbling goats I got to bed last night and put my ear plugs in. I could still hear the ventilation system hissing away and I thought about how I was never going to get to slee...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…
