Day 8: Pulgcerda to Vic Sau
87.4 miles, 6:36, 7,454' ascent
The morning air was crisp as the riders reluctantly departed the nicest hotel of the trip, most wore light jackets which they stowed at the start of the climb after leaving the city.
As we approached the first climb we could see clouds near the top and knew we'd be among them before too long.
The first climb was > 10 miles long but it wasn't too steep so we reached the summit relatively quickly. While stopping at the van to refuel we donned jackets for the speedy descent through the clouds.
Because today's ride is so long, the scale of the elevation map is compressed so tens of small climbs aren't discernible, but trust me they are there. Although the ride after the initial climb was a net descent, all the little climbs collectively exceeded the ascent of the first big climb.
The weather was quite warm, especially after lunch. My Garmin hit 122f, but I think that's because it was sitting in the sun.
The route required us to climb the last 10k to the hotel, but we were rewarded with a good property with working AC and WiFi. All the riders are anxious to see the ocean tomorrow.

Crawford Classics por David Blazejewski Por Flickr: Having traveled 29 miles from North Conway and run around beside the historic former Maine Central depot at Fabyans, Conway Scenic Railroad's 470 Railroad Club is about four miles into their eastbound return trip. They are seen here at MP 85 of the old Maine Central Railroad's Mountain Sub passing the historic Crawford Depot at the 1900 ft high point of the railroad. Ahead looms the long 1400 ft 2.2% descent down the mountain through Crawford Notch. The splendid little Queen Anne style station was built in 1891 sixteen years after the opening of the railroad. It's primary purpose was to serve the Crawford House Hotel that had been built nearby in 1859 (for the second time) and was the largest of all the great 19th century New Hampshire resort hotels at the time it was erected. The Crawford House outlasted most of the other grand White Mountain hotels of that era, but it ultimately closed in 1975, nearly 120 years after the building was constructed. It was destroyed by a fire two years later, on November 20, 1977, and the property was subsequently acquired by the Appalachian Mountain Club, which constructed the Highland Center on the site. The depot, which had been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, was also acquired by the AMC and serves as a visitor center, small museum, and gift shop. Both units are owned by the 470 Railroad Club and are original Boston and Maine locomotives wearing their as delivered EMD designed scheme. 4266 was built in Mar. 1949 and was acquired for preservation in 1981 off the Billerica deadline. Restored a couple years later, she has called North Conway home ever since and has been operational off and on for the past four decades. 4268 was built in Oct. 1949 and ran for the very first time in almost a half century just earlier this year. I'm not sure when her last run was, but I can find no photos of her in service after about July 1974. She languished for a decade behind the Billerica shops after being stripped of all major components including prime mover, main generator and traction motors. In 1986 she finally left Billerica by truck after being acquired by George Feuderer who displayed her in a field in East Swanzey, NH until acquired by the 470 Club and trucked to North Conway in October of 1991. She received a cosmetic restoration in 1993 and had been prominently displayed at the Conway Scenic in the company of her operational sibling ever since. After years of planning, the club began restoration in earnest in 2018 with the full support of the railroad and its shop using ex New Hampshire Northcoast GP9 1751 (ex PRR) as a major parts donor for the four year long restoration project. Addendum: thanks to Carl Byron for supplying the fascinating historical information below that I'd never read about before. The 4268A was actually built in March, 1949 as Engineering Test Dept Locomotive #930. Used for high altitude component testing on the DRGW's Soldier Summit among other locations. It spent some of that summer masquerading as a CB&Q locomotive leading their passenger car display at the 1949 Chicago World's Fair. It was then was cleaned up, re-engined, and made into to a standard F7A and offered for sale at a "slightly used demo" price. The B&M bought it and it was renumbered and painted into the B&M livery and shipped east, so while the builders plate may well say 10/49 but it certainly had a prior interesting career. ALIS Panel Focuses on Sustained Recovery in Hospitality Sector
Held in Los Angeles in January 2024, The Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) brought together professionals from across the hotel sector. The backdrop was one of sustained industry growth, with leisure and hospitality hiring since late 2020 in the 6 to 19 percent range. This far outpaced the national average across all industries of 3.7 percent. However, the baseline was one of such massive labor cuts, that this had not yet brought the industry back to its pre-pandemic employment levels.
As the moderator of an ALIS panel on the people component of the hospitality industry described it, there was much “repair work” to be done in the wake of the “devastating yet necessary” layoffs of 2020 and early 2021. The global president of Aimbridge Hospitality noted that, for his company, the hiring rebound had been significant and sustained. With 40,000 recent hires and 600,000 applications, the company was back to having around 90 percent of open positions filled.
One major change witnessed was a shift toward contract work, which at the key brand Remington had been 8 percent pre-COVID and was now approaching 16 percent. At the same time wage pressure, which had eaten into profits, was starting to normalize, with a healthy number of applicants for available jobs. As the executive described it, this labor market renormalization was something the company wanted to maintain moving forward, as the corporation focused on consolidating productivity gains.
The president and CEO of Choice Hotels International noted that his company was in growth mode, having added 300 positions in the past year and building toward 80 percent of corporate staffing needs met. One reason for this steady growth had to do with low annual attrition rates, of 8 percent in an industry where 20 percent is standard. From his perspective, significant new talent was being attracted back into the hospitality space.
The executive did note that hotel labor dynamics were often market specific. For example, in Washington, D.C., Choice Hotels was competing against other major hospitality employers, such as Marriott and the Hilton, as well as federal jobs in the area. To attract the most highly qualified candidates, the company was emphasizing support structures, with a focus on mental wellness support and shift flexibility. Programs are now available for employees to take well-being days when issues such as family stress reach levels where a break is needed.
The Remington Hospitality CEO described this flexibility as what attracts many workers to the industry in the first place. Many people in their 20s see travel as a life priority, rather than settling down and purchasing a vehicle or home. With that in play, working in a fun and dynamic industry with other interesting people is a major asset. There are still many ways to advance in what is a very entrepreneurial industry, with room at the top for those who persevere and generate positive results.
As reported in Business Insider in July 2024, industry milestones have been reached since the ALIS conference. In May, the leisure and hospitality sector finally surpassed the February 2020 pre-pandemic employment benchmark. This milestone arrived well after the US economy as a whole, which surpassed that benchmark in June 2022. With service industries highly sensitive to the overall economy, this growth slowed dramatically the next month, with only 7,000 jobs added across the sector in June, the traditional start of high season at many properties. This was described as a rolling recession scenario, where interest rate-sensitive sectors such as housing and tech were hit first, and this eventually carried over to hospitality. The silver lining is that these sectors are historically resilient. The American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) Foundation forecasts 12 percent growth in the hotel industry across the next five years, in contrast to 8 percent for the economy as a whole.

US will still pay at least twice as much after negotiating drug prices (Reuters) The U.S. government’s first-ever negotiated prices for prescription drugs are still on average more than double, and in some cases five times, what drugmakers have agreed to in four other high-income countries, a Reuters review has found. The U.S. Medicare health plan, which covers more than 67 million people, recently unveiled new maximum prices for the first 10 high-cost medicines negotiated under the Biden Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act. This is the first time Medicare has disclosed actual drug prices, which are largely hidden behind a complicated U.S. system of rebates and discounts. The lower prices will result in savings of $6 billion in 2026, the first year they take effect, Medicare said. A Reuters review of publicly available maximum prices set by other wealthy nations—Australia, Japan, Canada and Sweden—show that they have negotiated far lower prices for the same drugs. A 30-day supply of nine of the 10 drugs will cost $17,581 for Medicare in 2026, compared with $6,725 in Sweden this year. Comparable prices were not available for the 10th drug.
How China extended its repression to a US city (Washington Post) Chinese diplomats and pro-China diaspora groups based in the United States organized demonstrations in San Francisco that harassed and silenced protesters opposed to Beijing’s policies, including through violence, during Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s visit to the city in November, a six-month investigation by The Washington Post shows. The events in San Francisco illustrate how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is willing to extend its intolerance of any dissent into the United States and target people exercising their First Amendment rights in an American city. It is part of a broader global pattern of China attempting to reach beyond its borders and suppress parts of its diaspora advocating against the CCP and ongoing rights abuses in Tibet, Xinjiang, Hong Kong and mainland China, the U.S. government and human rights groups say. The Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles paid for supporters’ hotels and meals as an incentive to participate, according to messages shared in WeChat groups reviewed by The Post. At least 35 pro-CCP Chinese diaspora groups showed up to the APEC summit protests—including groups from New York, Pennsylvania and Washington state.
Governor's ex-aide charged as China agent (Reuters) A former deputy chief of staff to New York Governor Kathy Hochul has been charged with acting as an agent of the Chinese government. Linda Sun was fired from her role in 2023 after the governor's office discovered "evidence of misconduct" and reported it to the authorities. She and her husband Christopher Hu face 10 criminal counts, including violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, and money laundering conspiracy. The couple pleaded not guilty to the charges. The indictment details a series of actions Ms Sun took "at the order, direction, or request" of Beijing, including preventing Taiwanese diplomats from speaking to New York officials. In return, prosecutors say Ms Sun was given rewards totalling millions of dollars, and the couple laundered large amounts of money to buy luxuries, including a Ferrari and property in Hawaii and New York.
Four people were killed in a school shooting in Georgia (NYT) A 14-year-old student opened fire today in the hallway of a Georgia high school, killing two students and two teachers and injuring at least nine others, the authorities said. The shooting—the deadliest episode of school violence in Georgia’s history—took place at Apalachee High School in Winder, roughly 50 miles from the center of Atlanta. The suspect surrendered when he was confronted by law enforcement and is in custody, officials said. He will be charged with murder as an adult.
Nicaraguan congress gives legal footing to practice of prosecuting exiles and seizing their property (AP) Nicaragua’s Sandinista-controlled National Assembly approved criminal code changes Tuesday that allow the government to try opponents in absentia and seize the assets of the condemned. It’s a practice that’s already carried out but will now have legal foundation. The proposal from President Daniel Ortega was approved unanimously in the state party controlled legislature. Opponents and organizations that have fled or been forced into exile in Ortega’s years-long campaign to silence critical voices could be fined, sentenced to lengthy prison terms and see their property seized by the government under the approved changes. Last year, the government exiled more than 300 opposition figures, stripping them of their nationality. Far more Nicaraguans have fled into exile themselves to escape the repression that followed massive 2018 protests that Ortega dubbed a failed coup with international backing. Also on Tuesday, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Office said in a report that the government is “persecuting not only those who express dissident opinions, but also any person or organization that acts independently or is not directly under its control.”
Christmas in Venezuela kicks off in October, President Maduro has declared (AP) The world’s attention on Venezuela has been focused in the last weeks on the fallout from a highly contested presidential election that both the ruling party and its opponents claim to have won, the ensuing persecution of critics and the arrest warrant against the former opposition presidential candidate. But as political tensions escalate, President Nicolás Maduro decided there was a more important matter to discuss: Christmas and the need to kick off the jolly season a tad early this year. In October, to be precise. “It’s September, and it already smells like Christmas,” Maduro said Monday night during his weekly television show. “That’s why this year, as a way of paying tribute to you all, and in gratitude to you all, I’m going to decree an early Christmas for October 1.” This is not the first time that Maduro, in power since 2013, has declared the early arrival of Christmas. He did so during the COVID-19 pandemic, but never this early. Also, this year the political mood is particularly tense, even if Maduro said the season will come “with peace, happiness and security.”
Grenfell inquiry blames 'dishonest' firms, governments and fire service in damning final report (BBC/Reuters) The Grenfell Tower fire that killed 72 people was the result of "dishonest" companies, successive governments, and a lack of strategy by the fire service, a scathing 1,700-page report concludes. The report says a cladding product manufacturer “deliberately concealed” fire risks, while coalition and Conservative governments “ignored, delayed or disregarded” concerns. All deaths were avoidable, inquiry chair Martin Moore-Bick says. The fire was Britain’s deadliest blaze in a residential building since World War II. PM Keir Starmer pledged that the government would work to prevent similar tragedies occurring in the future. Prosecutors say they will decide on possible charges by the end of next year.
Gap in perception of Channel deaths (BBC) The capsizing of a boat off the French coast in the English Channel has left 12 people dead, including six children and a pregnant woman. The tragedy has renewed a sense of frustration among French people who see this as a British-made crisis. In the UK, officials have been quick to focus on—and to condemn—the smuggling gangs. Each incident, each death, is seen as the result of cynical criminal activity. Which, of course, it is. But for French politicians and civilians in resort towns scattered along this coastline, the reaction to yet another deadly incident is not to focus on the criminality of the smugglers, but on the motives of the migrants, on what still drives so many of them to attempt this dangerous crossing. And the blunt conclusion, repeated to me so often—by local mayors, by pensioners, by couples out walking their dogs on beaches where they now fear they may come across bodies washed ashore—is that this is Britain’s fault. France’s interior minister, Gerald Darmanin, focused on the lure of what he views as Britain’s loosely regulated job market, that acts like a magnet, drawing young Eritreans, determined Sudanese, Afghans, Syrians and Iraqis to this coastline, convinced that they if they can just make it across this last, short stretch of water—or even halfway across—they’ll end up in a country where they can find work, even without the right paperwork.
Back to school in Ukraine’s embattled Kharkiv means heading underground (Washington Post) It had been more than 2½ years since Polina Zamorska last set foot in a classroom, but she was determined to return for her final year at School 80. To do so, she’d have to go underground. On Monday, the 16-year-old donned a traditional white smock with colorful embroidery and headed with her mom to Ukraine’s first permanent subterranean school. Carved out of the earth almost 20 feet underground, the million-dollar school features a long corridor of classrooms painted the colors of sorbet: lemon lime, tangerine. With its sophisticated ventilation system and walls stenciled with evacuation arrows, it looked more like a spaceship than an educational institution—but it was better than attending class in a subway station or spending yet another year studying at home. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 left thousands of schools in rubble, and last year—with no safe alternative—more than 900,000 children across the country were forced into another year of online schooling.
Worked to the Bone, India’s Doctors Fear for Their Safety, Too (NYT) Exhausted doctors resting in crowded on-call rooms with no locks, two to a single bed. Frustrated relatives of patients angrily challenging a physician’s diagnosis. Too few security guards to keep the peace. These are everyday realities in Indian government hospitals. Young doctors describe multiday shifts and harrowing working conditions in rooms and wards often lacking in safety and hygiene, where learning is frequently interrupted by the crushing load of urgent cases. Their plight has come to light in recent weeks after the rape and murder in Kolkata of a 31-year-old junior doctor who had been resting after a grueling 36-hour shift. The case has prompted nationwide protests, with doctors, students and human rights activists demanding justice for the victim, as well as better protection and safer workplaces for doctors and women. Many doctors also went on strike.
Lebanon detains former central bank governor accused of financial crimes (Washington Post) Lebanese authorities on Tuesday detained Riad Salameh, the country’s disgraced former central bank governor, after an investigation into his financial dealings with a Lebanese brokerage firm, the state-run news agency reported. Salameh, who served as the head of Banque du Liban for three decades and was credited with reviving Lebanon’s post-civil-war economy, left his post under a cloud more than a year ago. He was blamed by many for the stunning collapse of Lebanon’s banking sector and was under investigation, along with relatives and associates, for corruption by authorities at home and abroad. In August 2023, shortly after Salameh left the central bank, he was placed under sanctions by the U.S. Treasury Department, which said Salameh’s “corrupt and unlawful actions have contributed to the breakdown of the rule of law in Lebanon.”

ET GLOBAL BUSINESS SUMMIT 2023 HIGHLIGHTS
“Humanity will be proud of itself after 100 years by studying the capability shown by India during the biggest crisis in 100 years”
India has entered the 'Amrit Kaal' of its independence, a period of national development and glory. To achieve the Prime Minister's vision of becoming a USD 5 trillion economy, the nation's Business leaders, State Governments, and Visionaries must work together to drive 'Economic Change'. Global Business Summit, a flagship initiative of The Times Group, will provide a platform to bring together visionaries, thought leaders, heads of state, policymakers, climate advocates, academicians, and corporate heads to cohesively drive this agenda and exert the momentum needed to achieve this glorious vision.
Global Business Summit 2023 seeks to provide solutions to key macroeconomic challenges by curating government-to-government interactions, business-to-government meetings, and business-to-business engagements to secure investments from domestic and international allies.
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, addressed the Economic Times Global Business Summit at Hotel Taj Palace in Delhi on 17 February 2023. He noted the changes that have taken place since his last appearance at the ET Global Business Summit three years ago when WHO declared Covid a pandemic leading to massive rapid changes globally and in India. He also discussed the concept of 'antifragile' and the collective determination of 140 crore Indians during the three years of war and natural calamity. The Prime Minister explained how reimagination came into play when the country gave the current government an opportunity to serve in 2014, and how the government can improve welfare delivery to empower the poor and create infrastructure in a more efficient way. The Prime Minister elaborated on reimagining welfare delivery and talked about the delivery of bank accounts, loans, housing, property rights, toilets, electricity, and clean cooking fuel.
He also remembered former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi's remark that 15 paise out of one rupee reached the intended beneficiaries. Shri Modi said that 10 crore toilets were constructed after 2014, taking sanitation coverage from below 40 percent to 100 percent in rural areas. He also gave examples of aspirational districts, such as institutional deliveries increasing from 47 percent to 91 percent, fully immunized children in the Aspirational District Barwani of Madhya Pradesh increasing from 40 percent to 90 percent, the success rate of TB treatment increasing from 48 percent to nearly 90 percent, and number of Gram Panchayats with broadband connectivity increasing from 20 percent to 80 percent. Regarding clean water supply, the Prime Minister said that only 3 crore tap connections were there in 2014, but in the last three and half years have added 8 crore new tap connections. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, highlighted the transformation of infrastructure in India, from political ambition to a grand strategy.
He noted that highways are being built at a speed of 38 km per day and more than 5 km of rail lines are being laid every day. The number of operational airports has doubled from 74 to 147, and 3.5 lakh kilometers of rural roads and 80 thousand kilometers of national highways have been built. He also highlighted the 1600-plus data layers of infrastructure mapping available on the GatiShakti platform, which can be linked to AI to decide the shortest and most efficient route. The Prime Minister also highlighted the reimagining infrastructure in India's aviation sector, which resulted in 128 air routes being opened up for civilian aircraft movement today, saving both time and fuel. This decision has also reduced 1 lakh tonnes of CO2 emissions.
The Prime Minister of India highlighted the achievements of his government in the last 9 years, such as laying 6 lakh kilometers of optical fiber, increasing the number of mobile manufacturing units, and reducing the rate of internet data. He also highlighted the 'Mai-Baap' culture of the past, which led to an atmosphere of mutual distrust and suspicion between the government and the citizens. After 2014, the 'govt-first' mentality was reimagined as a 'people-first' approach and the government worked on the principle of trusting its citizens. Examples of self-attestation, abolishing interviews from lower rank jobs, decriminalizing small economic offenses, Jan Vishwas Bill, collateral-free Mudra loans, and the government becoming a guarantor for MSMEs were given. The Prime Minister highlighted the reduction in taxes for the increase in gross tax revenue and said that taxpayers get motivated when they know that the tax paid is being spent efficiently.
He also touched upon faceless assessment and the Income Tax Department processing more than 6.5 crore returns this year. He emphasised that India's prosperity is the world's prosperity and that the theme of One World, One Family, One Future chosen for G-20 contains solutions to many challenges. He called upon everyone present to get involved in India's development journey as much as possible, as it gives them a guarantee of growth.
He told the world to keep an eye on India because we are going to create history by growing at the most exponential rate known to mankind.
Come, Grow with India.

10 reasons why you should visit Valley of Flowers
Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Valley of Flowers Trek has long been a trekkers’ favourite. The trek takes you through a beautiful mountain region, all the way to a floral valley covered in length and breadth with numerous flowers, including some endemic species. The rich floral biodiversity of the Valley of Flowers National Park has earned it the reputation of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trek starts from a quaint Himalayan hamlet called Ghangaria, a beautiful village nestled amidst high mountains. From here you can trek to the Valley of Flowers and also to the highest Gurudwara in the world – Hemkund Sahib. The interspersing of nature, adventure and spirituality makes this trek one of a kind. So if you are wondering why you should choose the Valley of Flowers Trek, here are some compelling reasons why you should do the trek.
An adventurous escape
The trek offers a perfect blend of adventure and natural beauty, making it an ideal escapade for thrill-seekers. While presenting a moderate difficulty level, certain sections of the trek challenge your endurance, but the breathtaking rewards at the summit justify the effort.
It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Recognized for its rich biodiversity, the Valley of Flowers secured its place as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. With around 600 species of flowers and plants, including exotic and rare flora like the Himalayan blue poppy and Brahma Kamal, it has become a haven for naturalists.
Visit the highest Gurudwara in the world
Adjacent to the Valley of Flowers, Hemkund Sahib stands as the highest Gurudwara globally. The trek to this sacred site, perched at an elevation of 14,100 ft, is a bit challenging but incredibly rewarding. Visitors can partake in the delicious langar and take a refreshing dip in the holy Hemkund Lake.
Solo traveller friendly
Ideal for solo travellers, the trek provides lodges and hotels along the route, eliminating the need for camping. With organizations offering fixed departure trips, even solo trekkers can embark on this adventure without the hassle of forming a group.
The beautiful base camp Ghangaria
Serving as the base for both the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib Trek, Ghangaria is a picturesque Himalayan village. Open for a limited period each year, the village witnesses devotees heading to Hemkund Sahib and adventurers gearing up for the trek to the valley.
Get to see the stunning Brahma Kamal
The trek unveils the legendary Brahma Kamal, an exquisite and rare Himalayan flower found at altitudes of 3500 m to 4500 m. Blooming at night, this flower, the state flower of Uttarakhand, possesses both fragrance and medicinal properties.
Witness some rare animal species
Beyond captivating flora, the trek might grant a sighting of rare animal species. The sub-alpine forests house wildlife like the Blue Sheep, Asiatic Black Bear, Brown Bear, and the elusive Red Fox.
A paradise for photographs
From Ghangaria to the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib, every corner is a spectacle of natural beauty. The trek becomes an ideal canvas for photography enthusiasts, offering stunning vistas of mountains, flowers, waterfalls, streams, and wildlife.
Interesting mythological connection
With a mention in the Puran Ramayana, the Valley of Flowers holds a mythological significance. It is believed to be the origin of the 'Sanjeevani Booti,' the life-saving herb given to Lord Rama's brother, Laxman. Hanuman carried the entire mountain to save Laxman from a fatal arrow blow, adding a fascinating touch to the trek.
Extremely beautiful in monsoon
While many Himalayan treks close during monsoon, the Valley of Flowers opens up to reveal its natural splendour. The monsoon enhances the trek's beauty, with lush greenery, blooming flowers, and mist-draped mountains creating a pure monsoon delight.
The Valley of Flowers Trek promises an extraordinary adventure, whether for the thrill of the journey, the rich biodiversity, or the spiritual aura that envelopes the entire experience. Each step unfolds a surprise, making this trek an absolute must-have on any adventurer's list.
