Welcome to the Slither In Fest 2023
A fest made specifically for Bottom Tom Riddle | Voldemort works.
By hosting this prompt fest, we hope to encourage more bottom Tom | Voldemort works within the HP fandom! We hope you'll consider joining us.
Tumblr media
Basic Info
There is no minimum requirement for a prompt fill. Please feel free to produce anything you’d like! This includes drabbles or one-shots for writers, or sketches and doodles for artists. All forms of art are welcome!
Please send any questions to our ask box here, or via e-mail at [email protected].
Alternatively, you can also find us on Discord at Voldemort’s Bathtub, an 18+ Tom Riddle | Voldemort rarepairs server.
Tumblr media
Rules
1. This is a NSFW fest, which means those under the age of 18 are not permitted to participate.
(Prompting Guidelines)
2a. At a minimum, please submit one broad prompt and one detailed prompt so there is variety. Broad prompts should be open-ended and flexible (i.e. any ship + a trope or setting), whereas more detailed prompts can include specifics (for those prompts with built-in plot points).
2b. To avoid confusion, list any triggers or squicks you do not want involved in your prompt. (Please be respectful when fulfilling prompts.)
(Claiming Guidelines)
3. You don't need to pick a prompt in order to submit a piece! If you do, please pick a prompt that is not your own and not already claimed. Let’s aim to make as many people happy as possible. Please also avoid picking more than one prompt from the same person if you choose to claim more than one.
(Submission Guidelines)
4a. Fics should be edited for spelling, punctuation, and grammar to the best of the author’s ability, or else given to a beta reader for editing. Works that fail to meet the bare minimum may be removed from the collection.
4b. Entries must explicitly include bottom Tom | Voldemort representation. Sexual acts must either be depicted or described/referenced clearly. For this reason, all ratings should be M or higher.
4c. Finally, please email the mods once you've submitted your piece to the collection so that we can go in and approve it! Thank you for participating!!

Think of the one day of the year when the sun sets and the year's longest night occurs. See the moon rise early, view the twinkling of the stars, watch as your air culminates into wisps of clouds. Tis the season of long winter's night, when Earth neither leans nor tilts towards its lover, the Sun. Darkness reigns here fully, whether you embrace that or not is fully up to you~

Hi there! My name is Fay Roberts, and I’m the founder of Allographic Press, which has been running since August 2011.
In this post, I’ll be telling you a bit about Allographic, about the new initiative we’re launching this week, and how you can submit work to the next anthology.
And if this is all a bit much to read, we have a simplified checklist here.
About Allographic
Allographic’s founding aim, and continuing mission, is to platform the voices less heard, raising marginalised stories into mainstream view as much as possible. So far we’ve mostly achieved that through open mic guest artists, hosting special performances, supporting the Other Voices show at Edinburgh Fringe (intersectional feminist spoken word cabaret), and focusing mostly on publishing single collections by people of marginalised identities.
New Venture
Now we want to go a step further, bringing back the Small Word anthologies we used to do, and theming them for a variety of experiences less explicitly well-represented on the publishing scene in the UK. The initial plan is for them to come out quarterly, in limited runs of 100 printed copies of A6 pamphlets, plus using ebook technology on a variety of platforms, to make the work more accessible. Please follow this blog and our various social media outlets, for news of the anthologies as they come up.
Submit to the anthology
So, to kick off, we’ll be producing an anthology based around the notion of neurodiversity – whether that’s autism, ADD/ADHD, synaesthesia, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, hyperlexia, Tourette’s Syndrome, or any of the other experiences that sit under the banner of neurodivergence – we want to publish your poems, stories, essays, photos, and original artwork (though please note that the latter two will be in black-and-white in the print versions). Please note that, for the purposes of this publication, self-diagnosis is perfectly valid as a basis for writing about the experience of neurodivergence. The working title for the anthology is currently Synaptic Resonance, but we’re definitely open to alternatives if you come up with something better!
Submit via this form.
Timelines
The deadline for submission is 28-Feb-23; we’ll be closing the form at midnight on 1-Mar-23 (GMT), with an aim to publish at the beginning of April 2023, with an online launch event shortly afterwards. It’s free to enter, and, if your work is selected, you’ll receive a free copy of the printed pamphlet and ebook. As with all these themed anthologies, we’ll be asking about your personal connection to the theme, as we’ll be prioritising selecting the work of folk who are neurodivergent themselves in this instance. The limit on entries is 3 pieces, with no limit on length (though we may reserve the right to publish an excerpt with a link to the full version online, especially for essays/ stories, etc.), and each piece must be submitted in its own separate file (see form for details – MS Word, ODT, and RTF files are fine, ditto PNG and JPG for artwork, but no pdfs). If you submit more than one piece per file, we will ignore anything beyond the first piece. Please note that for poetry and prose we are after pieces that are completely or mostly written in the English language, as we currently do not have the means to proofread other languages beyond Google Translate! You should hear within two weeks of the closing date whether your piece has been selected. Please note that we do not have the capacity to give feedback on individual pieces at this time, and we will not be accepting unsolicited manuscripts, or submissions via any means but the form provided, mostly because we’re a tiny team and there have to be some limits!
Please note that, if you want to ensure that we experience your poems (especially concrete poems) in the format/ layout you intend them, it will be best to download our template and submit your files based on that.
Link to docx template
Link to doc template
Link to odt template
If your images include text, please try to use the Verdana font, as that’s what we’ll be using, for the sake of accessibility and consistency. Likewise, we’ll be asking you to supply image descriptions for any visual work you submit so that we can embed that in the ebook versions to improve accessibility.
Conclusion
So, talk to us about the trials and tribulations of communication and executive dysfunction; the joys and marvels of a brain that sparkles in dark places and sees the usual rules as guidelines at best. We want to hear everything, from across the spectrum (yep, we went there) of experience.
We look forward to seeing what you’ve got for us!

First, thank you to everyone for your submissions! It's been great seeing them all come in and reading all the propaganda. There's characters from a pretty wide range of things, so it'll be a fun challenge to get them all matched up and I'm really looking forward to starting this tournament.
Since we're only a few days away from the final submission deadline, here's the list of the characters submitted so far, so that if anyone has a character they want to submit who isn't on the list yet, they can still get them in!
I'll also be noting which characters are currently going to be going through preliminary polls to determine if they're eligible for the main tournament. There aren't very many characters on this list, and everyone who is on it is either there because someone who submitted them indicated that they weren't sure if the character was eligible or not, or because I was personally familiar with the character and felt they were in that gray zone of eligibility for this particular tournament. I don't know all the characters and media submitted, though, so if anyone who is familiar with a character not already on the preliminaries list feels someone should be moved there, you are welcome to let me know.
After April 30th, which is the last day I'll take submissions, I'll put the handful of preliminary polls up. Please feel free to send in more characters until then!
The list of characters currently in the tournament can be found below!

The Terror Reverse Bang 2023 🔄💥
Tumblr media
TL;DR -> Mini Reverse Bang. 2 artworks. 7500 words. Sign up in December. Post in May.
Tumblr | Twitter | Discord
Hello hello! The Terror Reverse Bang (TTRB) is a creative event for fans of season 1 of AMC's The Terror.
In a regular big bang event, writers create fic and artists create artwork to go along with it. Here, we flip it and reverse it: artists create the concept and pair up with writers to create the story.
This year's TTRB will be a mini-bang: minimum of 2 pieces of art and 7500 words of fic (though if you find yourselves making or writing more then GO FOR IT) We'll be tracking #the terror reverse bang 2023 on tumblr and #theterrorreversebang2023 on twitter.
See more details about how this all works below, and rules at the bottom.

Sign-up phase | Dec 17 - Jan 2
Once the sign-up period opens you can sign up for TTRB using an online form (link to follow).
You can sign up as an artist, writer, beta reader, pinch hitter, or combination of the above.
This event is a mini-bang. It’s meant to be light and easy compared to a normal-sized big bang event. But even a mini bang is a significant commitment of time and energy!
We TTRB mods ask, before you sign up, that you consider the time investment of participating in this event against your plans and obligations in the coming months and make sure you can confidently make a commitment. Dropping out is a fact of life in fandom events and we'll do everything we can to make it work if it happens, but the easiest way to avoid the chaos of drop-outs is to make sure you can participate in this event in light of whatever else you've got going on.
Once you've signed up we'll add you to the participants roster and artists can start working on their concepts (though you're welcome to start earlier if inspiration strikes!).
Feel free to follow us on tumblr and twitter for updates, and join the event discord server if that's your jam.
Concept phase | Jan 2 - Jan 15
Artists will have two weeks from the time sign-ups close to produce a concept that we'll use in the claims form.
Your concept shouldn't be a finished piece. It can be a sketch, a moodboard, reference photographs or images, anything that the writers can use to get a feel for the story you're trying to tell. That said -  it should be visual.
Your concept should be something that you haven't posted or communicated to others in the fandom before.
It can be an idea you've had as a WIP for a while! But in order to be as fair and impartial as possible during the claims process it's important that your concept be a new idea that others in the fandom haven't seen already.
Can I submit more than one concept?
If you feel confident you can invest the time and effort to create artwork for two concepts then yeah, absolutely. There will be an option in the concept submission form to submit a 2nd concept.
We're expecting the number of writers to be slightly higher than the number of artists so two concepts is not at all a problem - so long as you have the time and energy to invest in supporting two writing partners!
During the claims period we will pair off everyone’s 1st concept first and then dip into 2nd concepts if we have additional writers.
I'm not sure what you mean by concept?
Two weeks isn't a lot of time to produce artwork (you speed demons aside!) but it should be enough time for you to come up with some early sketches that will help your writer understand the story you want to tell. Any references you're using or a moodboard is also helpful. All we need at the end of the concept phase is enough content for the writers to be able to know which ideas they're interested in writing for. If this still doesn't make sense, feel free to ping the mods and we'll figure it out together.
Claims phase | Jan 16-28
Artists: you'll fill out a form (link to come) with your concepts, a short blurb, the key ships and characters, content and trigger warnings, and the fic rating you have in mind. The mods will take these submissions and collect them into a claims form for the writers.
Your concepts are due Jan 16th.
Writers: when claims open you'll get a link to the claims form where you'll see the concepts. You'll be able to select your first, second, and third preference from the list. You’ll have from Jan 18th - Jan 20th to submit your preferences.
Concepts must not be discussed, publicly or elsewhere, during the claims phase. This is to ensure the fairness of the claims process.
Starting on Jan 21st, the mods will go through and match artists to writers per your preferences. We’ll send an email to each pairing with the result. These emails should go out no later than Jan 21.
Depending on how many participants we get, we might need to do a second round of claims. If this happens, that'll take place the second week of the claims period. We'll keep going until every concept has a writer assigned to it.
There is a slim chance, given the historical trend of writers-to-artists in Terror fandom events, that not every writer who signs up will get assigned to an artist. If that happens please please don't take it personally or as any kind of comment on your writing ability. The claims process is both anonymized and randomized - we don't actually know who you are when we're pairing up participants. But if it does happen, we hope you'll still participate as a beta reader and/or pinch hitter!
What should go in the blurb for my concept?
Imagine you're describing your idea to a friend in their DMs. That's what the blurb should be. It can be short and very vague, or hyper-detailed and specific. But there will be a 300 word cap, so the writers can read through all the available concepts in a reasonable amount of time.
What if I don't know all the ships or characters who will show up in the story?
That's ok! Stories evolve as they go. But you should know who the main characters are, that way the writers can make sure they're choosing concepts they know they can write for.
What if I don't know what content or trigger warnings my story will have?
That's ok too! But if you're anticipating including content that falls under the standard AO3 content warnings (non-con, graphic violence, character death) or content that you suspect might be worth a content warning, call it out here. Again, this is just to make sure that writers choose the concepts that they're best able to write for!
What if I don't know what rating my story will be?
Mark down if you know your concept will involve NSFW content or not. Not all writers are comfortable writing explicit content - though some are and that's absolutely what they're looking for. Here's a link to the rating descriptions on AO3.
Working phase | Jan 21 - Apr 30
Time to get down to it!
For the next 14 weeks writers will write and artists will art.
Again, this is a mini-bang, so the requirements are 2 pieces of visual art and 7500 words of fic at a minimum.
We'll have regular WIP Wednesdays in the discord server for both artists and writers to help keep you motivated!
On Thursdays, we'll solicit submissions for Sneak Peeks - sketches and snips that you and your partner are comfortable with us sharing on the event blog! (Promotion doesn't come easy for everyone, so let us do it for you!) These are absolutely not required but if you want to share and help build hype for the event then please do!
We'll also have four check-ins with each team throughout the working phase: two check-ins for the artist and two for the writer. Each check-in form will cover the works from both partners - just to make sure you're on track to finish by the deadline and you don't need any help from the mod team.
As for how you work with your partner - that is 100% up to you so long as you're ready to post on the deadline. If you want to collaborate heavily with each other, that's great! Artists, if you want to be surprised by the fic then tell your writer so, though they'll probably still have questions for you. If you want to check in with each other once a week or so and share WIPs back and forth, also great. Whatever works for you and your process, so that both partners reach the end with something they're proud of.
During the working period works should be kept between the partners and the event discord, to avoid spoilers. This is another reason why we'll do Sneak Peek Thursdays!
Deadline -- Apr 30
All fics need to be posted to the AO3 collection and all artwork ready to go by Apr 30. Writers, we'll provide you with a guide on posting to a moderated collection. This can be a bit unnerving!
Artists should post their artwork to the platform of their choice on their scheduled posting date, the same date the mods release the fic.
How many works per day and how long the posting period runs will depend on how many works we end up with. Might be a few. Might be a lot! The mod team will be in communication with you about it as the date approaches.
We'll also make a post on the event blog for each piece, with links back to the fic and art. And at the end of the event we'll post a master list of everything you've created, and pin it to the event blogs for reference.
We'll be using #the terror reverse bang 2023 on tumblr and #theterrorreversebang2023 on twitter for updates and posting works
And that's it! That's our show. We'll be using #the terror reverse bang 2023 on tumblr and #theterrorreversebang2023 on twitter for updates and posting works
Rules
This is a Terror event and as such the fanart and fanfic should be for The Terror. Any and all AUs are fair game, as are supporting OCs - so long as it's still a fanwork for The Terror
Explicit content is allowed and encouraged! Explicit content must be appropriately tagged with the appropriate ratings and content warnings / trigger warnings.
Concepts should be original to this event, as in a concept that hasn't been posted to social media or discussed with other members of the fandom. This allows claims to be as impartial as possible, so all the participants have the opportunity to work on a concept that matches their preferences as best possible.
During the working phase, if your partner doesn't respond to you for two weeks, please inform the mods immediately so we can begin the process of hunting for a pinch hitter.
If at any point you find yourself unable to complete your art / fic, please inform the mods ASAP. Dropping out of the event, while not the outcome anyone hopes for, is something that happens from time to time. No harm, no foul - but the sooner you let us know the better chance we have of finding a pinch hitter or making other arrangements. Waiting until the last second will leave your partner and the people cheering for you disappointed - so let us know if you run into trouble!
Art and fic should be posted as complete works on the assigned posting date. Fics are to be posted all at once. Installments are not allowed. Art should be posted as a final polished piece, not a WIP or a sketch.
If you have any other questions please let us know!
❤️, TTRB

Insert The Clash Reference - New Year’s Revolution Commentary
Tumblr media
I will be the first to admit this was not one of my stronger contests. As I alluded to in the initial post, I had intended to run something else entirely, but articulating what I wanted people to give me proved entirely fruitless despite around 8 hours of concentrated sentence-construction. So, thus, with the deadline looming, I audibled into something else entirely that I put no prior thought in. I think this showed itself somewhat in the submissions, as people seemed to take different lessons from the same post, and I sincerely apologise for any misgivings due to my poor communication of my intentions.
That said, y’all ran in some real delightful directions with this one. I definitely did not expect to see most of the twists on Rebels-as-a-concept that you decided to bring to the table, and seeing everyone’s little takes on how Rebels could be done was an absolute delight. Thank you all wholeheartedly for your submissions this week.
With all that out of the way, a cut!
Tumblr media
@an-anarchist-shapeshifter - Double Agent
Thrilled to see that tumblr user an-anarchist-shapeshifter has partaken in the political unrest contest, though I am slightly bewildered that you were not the one to submit the sole Rebellious Shapeshifter of the crowd. Regardless, the card you actually submitted: Absolutely lovely saboteur effect. Leaving the card draw as optional is an incredibly clever choice, as it can allow you more flexibility to choose between adding to your own hand and decreasing theirs in less than ideal scenarios, while still allowing you to generate nauseating amounts of card advantage when everything lines up. Absolutely delicious mechanic to fit on a four mana 2/3, so excellent work there. My main sticking point for this particular rogue element is its use of skulk. See, I played standard back when Shadows of Innistrad was released, and I still vividly remember how skulk played out in practical terms: Namely, 1 power skulk creatures were essentially unblockable, 2 power ones were Difficult, but Manageable, and 3+ power ones had an extra line of flavor text. Skulk as an evasion mechanic is very narrow and I don't think I have ever found it particularly fun, playing with or against it, and that sour taste has yet to leave me even after all these years. That said, I will commend you for selecting the only vaguely interesting Skulk Number. If you gave this menace instead I think it would play out very similarly, while also avoiding any and all unforeseen Ancient Judge Grudges that may still be lying around. An otherwise delightful card somewhat marred by a slightly unfortunate mechanic choice.

@demimonde-semigoddess - Jabberhouse Hand
This card is delightful and I very much wish it existed, but unfortunately, as I am currently judging the Rebel Contest and not the Cards I Like Contest, I cannot fully endorse this card, as I am having quite a bit of difficulty figuring out where the Goblin bit ends and the Rebel bit begins. Plinking people? That's just standard Boggart Shenanigans. Milling everyone? A lil weird for Goblins but I'm not sure it exactly screams "I'm a Rebel!" either. Caring about things what cost 2 or less? No idea. I just can't really tell why this particular Goblin has selected Rebellion as a profession rather than Roguery, aside possibly from the flavor text association with Grenzo, which is itself tenuous as he himself is also a Goblin Rogue. Could I envision a set where Grenzo tries to upend the monarchists from his dungeon-throne, and acquires the Rebel typing while doing so? Sure. But I'm just not confident I'm getting that entirely from this card, unfortunately. Like I said though, love it mechanically, just not sure it was the ideal execution for this contest.
Tumblr media
@dimestoretajic - Backroom Recruiter
Let the workers unite! It is rather unfortunate that their union contracts only extend to the end of combat, rather than end of turn, as that will almost certainly result in unintentional union-member casualties, when your Union Bear becomes a 4/4 and becomes blocked by another 2/2 and emerges triumphant, only to lose its coveted toughness and die to the very damage it previously powered through at combat's end. Fix that tiny little thing, though, and this is genuinely one of my favorite mechanics submitted this week. Absolutely in love with the idea of recruiting all my creatures into The Union. Although I will say I'm not totally thrilled with the concept of the union counters, I can definitely understand why you would feel motivated to include them on your singular submission for this week, as this definitely strikes me as a mechanic best demonstrated with friends. All in all, you almost made the cut, and this entire card is extremely endearing, but the mistaken timing on the toughness buff just barely took you out of contention.
Tumblr media
@foxgirlbeans - Spartacus, Boisterous Rebel
Finally! Some consensus on the identity of Spartacus: It's this guy. Thrilled we've finally worked that one out. Goofs about impassioned acts of solidarity aside, this is an absolutely fascinating card that I would absolutely love to play at a table with, like, 4+ people but would loathe to encounter against a single opponent. I will get into more detail about that criticism in a second, but first, I'd like to address a templating concern. First, the regenerate. Magic the Gathering has not seen a new use of the regenerate mechanic in approximately seven years. As of late, they've all but replaced that mechanic with temporarily granting indestructible, which by and large is going to accomplish the exact same thing as regeneration without a large amount of the associated rules headaches (Speaking as a former Rules Advisor Who Judged Some Local Tournaments, regenerate does A Lot Of Things and people have a very easy time forgetting about most of them.) This is rather fortunately a simple thing to address: As stated, you could pretty easily swap that regeneration shield for temporary indestructibility and be entirely above board.
Slightly larger problem: The permanence of the control-changing ability. Red/white doesn't generally get to steal things from people, even if winning a die roll is required to do so. Additionally, in one-on-one games of Magic, having a creature out which incentivises you to spend all your time attempting to steal other people's creatures with coinflip odds seems potentially frustrating for everyone involved, as, if you win the flips, your opponent has a bad time, and if you lose the flips, you have a bad time. I think the single simplest fix for both of these issues would be to have the control change only last until the end of the new controller's next turn. That way, they're guaranteed at least one attack with their newfound ally, but there is significantly decreased chance of permanent estrangement. All in all, I'd love to play this with a larger table, but it very much needs a bit more iterating before I can really endorse it for use in any other format. Clever idea though.
Tumblr media
@helloijustreadyourpost - Brazen Bruiser
I am slightly concerned about this mechanic, as I am a bit afraid that the range of benefits you can grant to someone who succeeds in being Defiant is much smaller than is desirable. As is, I'm worried that this mechanic, in spite of the attack trigger, will actually cause people to not want to attack quite as much, for fear of enabling an opposing Rebel's Defiance. Flavor is great, and the card itself is pretty well executed, and very solidly within the range of Effects That You Can Get Away With, don't get me wrong, but I'm just inclined to believe that it won't quite have the kind of effect on a game you were looking for, unfortunately.
Tumblr media
@hypexion - Angel of Revolution
Very bold of you to submit an Angel of Revolution that does not need to turn even a meager 90 degrees to attack. Trigonometry aside, this card is perfectly reasonable, and the mechanic seems like a delightful addition to the Rebel arsenal, especially considering how... interesting some of the additional creature type choices get for some of these things (looking at you, Trenching Steed). Not much more to say, honestly. Good mechanic, solid card, maybe could have used a bit more of a flavor anchoring to really allow it to rise above the competition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@i-am-the-one-who-wololoes - Deep-Cover Agent
The aforementioned Rebellious Shapeshifter, not to be confused with any tumblr users that might be present. The flavor here is pretty immaculate honestly, but I'm not sold on how much that second ability is doing. Putting this at uncommon was definitely a wise choice, but even then, having access to a repeatable pump spell and also a repeatable shrink feels a bit excessive, when either one of those by itself would make combat in complex boardstates borderline nightmarish. If you just picked one (probably the one that encourages you to use the first ability, honestly) I think I'd be a bit higher on this card than I am, but as is I think it still just does a little too much for a little to little.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@izzet-always-r-versus-u - Voice of the Masses
Adding "reference to a cycle of Urza's Saga Angels" to my list of Things I Very Much Wasn't Expecting this week. Nor was Rebels-As-A-Group-Of-Heretics, honestly, and I'm kind of down for that? That's a cool idea, thank you for sharing it with me. I think my main concern with the card itself is the tax ability. I know decks full of legends are generally pretty niche, but they still very much do exist, and that's a pretty steep bill to add to an entire supertype/deck archetype, especially given how aggressively costed the actual body is. I know they're not a fan of the establishment but I do feel that making things cost 1 extra would have more than sufficed here. Regardless, this is I think a relatively small gripe strung from the worlds tiniest violin.
Tumblr media
@reaperfromtheabyss - Aimless Renegade
A rebel without a cause! Absolutely delightful. Tragically, this was yet another victim of I Can Only Pick Six Winners. Though I do think that a stronger flavor/setting leaning would've pushed this a bit further above the competition. Also, not to nitpick, but it should "attack each combat." rather than each turn. That's about it honestly. Great card! Lovely concept. Just not quite enough steam for me to exalt it further.
Tumblr media
@snugz - Amphin Frostmage
You alluded to the possibility that this could end up just kind of being an evasion ability in your submission text, and, well, yeah. This mechanic, in any sufficient quantity, will be Pretty Much Skulk, But More Words. Like, if you get down more than two of these I'm not sure many non-desperate individuals would dare block your Rebellious Salamanders at that point, as that would mean getting their creature locked down for nearly the next half-century. It certainly is an interesting concept, and I'm thrilled to see you've brought the Amphin into this of all things, definitely a novel source of rebellion. But yeah, this can pretty much be boiled down to Evasion, But More Verbose, and I'm not sure that's gonna play out as the best use of textbox space in the world. Perhaps something more akin to afflict, where you have a set payoff for getting blocked, if only to save on text space? I'm not sure honestly.
Tumblr media
@squeezyboi - Simic Dismissers
Absolutely in love with the concept of this card, and the idea that maybe some of the Simic's experiments aren't quite as enthused with their outcomes. Mechanically, as well, I think this is quite delightful, letting you profit off of any excessive accrued counters that your evolve or adapt creatures may have generated. The only thing that really put this behind the Defiant Gateless for me is that I'm not sure what broader implications it could have. Like, yes, these are rebellious Simic victims, but what else are rebels doing on Ravnica? I'm sure one could conjure a cycle of guild-"aligned" Rebels in similar fashion to this, but I just don't see it being as cohesive as other entries, which is I think the main thing that brought it out of contention for me. All that aside, lovely stuff here.
Tumblr media
@wolkemesser - Defiant Aesthete
Rebellious Lorwyn Elf who wants to protect those that the ruling Elf class deem undesirable? Oh absolutely. Your flavor direction here is honestly immaculate. Mechanically, though, I'm a bit less impressed. Anti-ward is definitely an interesting direction to take things, though I'm not confident it will play quite as well as its more traditional counterpart, as it relies more on the owner of the Thing People Want To Kill not leaving up enough mana rather than the person doing the killing having enough mana, which means that the Defiant in question is pretty much gonna survive whatever gets thrown at it so long as its owner is sufficiently motivated to allow it to do so, which feels like it would be rather frustrating to play against, especially in quantity. Regardless, the flavor is absolutely lovely, the enters the battlefield ability is quite nice, and I appreciate that you reached out with a new mechanic this week, even if it didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
Tumblr media
@yd12k - Farmstead Rallier
Fantastic flavor, love that, and the flavor text itself is absolutely stellar. Largest strike against this for me, honestly, is that the Rebel bit feels real tangential to the whole experience. Like, this card? Great. Fantastic Peasant Tribal experience. In the context of this contest? I think you may have been slightly better served submitting something that demonstrated the utility of these Rebel tokens which you alluded to in your submission text, more of a Rebel Payoff than a Rebel which might incidentally generate More Rebels. All that said, it is still definitely a very lovely card, I'm just not confident it was the best demonstration of the concepts in your set in relation to the prompt.
That’s all from me for this week, barring me continuing to ride this inexplicable wave of executive function through some backlog commentary. (Again, I sincerely apologise for that, my brain is filled with bees and everything is difficult) but yes. Thank you all for participating!

Defunkt Magazine is looking for submissions on queer pride! Deadline is March 31st!
About ECLIPSE
“I find I am constantly being encouraged to pluck out some one aspect of myself and present this as the meaningful whole, eclipsing or denying the other parts of self.” - Audre Lorde, Sister, Outsider.
People who are biracial, nonbinary, multicultural constantly find themselves not being able to fit into the mold of what our society expects of them. Michelle Zauner in the essay/memoir Crying in H-Mart speculates on her mixed-race identity following her mother’s death. Audre Lorde in the essay “Age, Race, Class, and Sex: Women Redefining Difference,” published in Sister, Outsider, talks about her inability to fit into the “mythical norm”—a knowing at the edge of our consciousness that says ‘that is not me’” when we look at what our society reveres as “normal” (i.e. straight, white, cis-het men). Rachel Charlene Lewis, a mixed-raced queer essayist-poet writes in the essay "Queering Gender, Queering Genre," published in Electric Lit, “There is, for me, validity to be found in space less easily labeled.” All of these great writers, thinkers, and creatives recognize that they do not fit on the binary scale of life and seek to break that scale. While society might reject our outsider status, within our work, all the many parts of ourselves are allowed to live freely and without judgment or definition. We want to read the parts of you that are not easily defined. We want all your facets, all your sides, all of your phases. No longer will we eclipse the parts of ourselves to better fit into a binary, we will become the sun, the stars, and the moon, all wrapped up into one.
Those chosen will have their pieces published online and in print as well as receive payment. Payment varies based on our Patreon subscriptions. Volume 10 contributors received $8.50/person and ANATOMY contributors received $13, and we expect that number to increase or stay the same for this volume.

FAQ
What are the zine requirements for art and fic content?
Art and fic must feature a character or characters from the TV show BBC Merlin. For artists, the art should be 8.5 x 11 inches (2550 x 3300 pixels) at 300 dpi, with the final submission format being PNG.
For writers the fic limit is 2,500 words, and also the ratings for all works should be no higher than PG-13.
Additionally, I ask that participants please refrain from making artwork/writing that includes incest for the zine.
Who are the mods? What experience do they have?
There are no mods yet besides me, Cris (hot-house-orchid on tumblr). This is my first time making a zine, but I have participated in a couple zines before. There may be more mods soon!
How many contributors of each type will be selected?
Depending on how many contributors apply, I would like to accept as many as possible!  It would be great to have many creators all in one zine.
What is the Excalibur (BBC Merlin) Zine about?
The zine is for BBC Merlin fans to make art and fiction about a character or characters they like from the BBC Merlin TV show. Including shipping in writing/art is totally up to the participants!
Will the zine be digital or physical?
This zine is going to be digital!
What is doctors without borders?
The proceeds of the zine will be going to https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org , which provides medical humanitarian aid to people impacted by conflict, natural disasters, epidemics, and more.
What rating will the zine be?
PG-13, though artistic nudity and non-sexual intimacy is okay.
How does the application process work?
Applications for artists, writers, and mods will be through google forms. The applications will be open from October 13, 2022 – November 14, 2022.
Then, applications will be reviewed from Nov. 14, 2022 – Nov. 19, 2022.
Lastly, approved applicants will be contacted and have from Nov. 20, 2022 – Nov. 25, 2022 to confirm their acceptance into the zine.
What if I want to provide both writing and art for the zine?
That’s awesome! Just make sure to fill out both the writer application and the art application.
What if I would like to collaborate with another artist/writer for the zine? (ex. writing a fic and having an artist make an illustration for it.)
That can be done! Both collaborating participants have to apply as a writer or an artist to the zine, though.
Are you accepting most applicants?
Yes, lots of Merlin fans working together to make a project would be awesome.
What if I need to drop out of the zine?
That's okay! Please just let me know.
If I have further questions, where can I reach you?
You can send me an ask or message me directly on tumblr at https://excaliburzine.tumblr.com/ or send me an email at [email protected]
