Astarion frowned as he and Tav entered the modest boutique. It was small, but clean; organised. It had an almost rustic charm to it, featuring large windows adorned with delicate lace curtains, which were tied back just enough to let the sun shine through. That was appreciated, as Astarion had grown weary of the dark.
He said nothing as his cheery companion scanned the outfits on the walls, cupping her chin as she considered and rejected each one. Carefully curated as they were, she seemed to be looking for something specific. The soft beams accentuated racks of unique frocks, hand-knitted sweaters, and artisanal jewelry, but she passed them all by.
Why did she bring me to this rundown shack?
Astarion huffed. Has she noticed how old my clothes are? No, she's not that perceptive.
His eyes widened as her finger suddenly pointed at some lingerie behind the shopkeeper's counter. His heart sank.
Of course ... she wants to dress me in something risqué. Expose my body. Why am I not surprised? There's nothing more "sexy" than a vampire, after all. He bit the tip of his thumb, feigning indifference. So in the end, she's just like all the others. A horny, selfish little—!
"No, no! Not that!" she laughed. "The one beside it."
Astarion flinched, trying to hide his shock as the shopkeeper passed her a plain ashmeadow outfit. It wasn't particularly bright or stylish, but the pattern was subtle, casually elegant, and paired with lightweight trousers, likely designed to ease movement.
"What do you think?" she asked, unfolding the pieces for a better view. "Doesn't it look nice and comfy?"
Astarion hesitated. His eyes narrowed as he scrutinised every inch. Overall, the outfit was dull, at least compared to his usual garb, but pleasant in all the ways that mattered. It wouldn't grab attention, but it wasn't hideous. It wouldn't make a spectacle of his body, but it would complement his figure, his hair, his eyes. For one brief moment, he felt oddly respected, but he quickly recoiled in mistrust.
Is this a trick?
He quickly waved at the suggestion, bidding the shopkeeper to take the outfit away, but Tav clung to it, staying his hand.
"Wait, what's wrong with it? You don't like it?"
"I appreciate your confidence in me, darling, but I don't think even I could make that dreary ensemble look good. That's something you'd see a pig farmer wearing." He gave her a seductive grin. "Surely you'd like to see me in something more ... exotic."
Disgusting, but I need her protection. Just fuck me, already. Get it over with. Why the song and dance? Why the charade? Am I not being forward enough? Perhaps I should should try the 'lonely bachelor' angle. That tends to work on sensitive women like this.
Tav raised a brow, her confusion genuine, but Astarion didn't believe it. He couldn't.
"No, I just think this suits you," she said.
Astarion scoffed, thrown by her sincerity. There was no hint of sarcasm or trickery in her tone. No indication that she was fulfilling some mundane kink by picking such an outfit. But it didn't make sense. He hadn't been particularly kind to her, and he was only good for one thing: sex. Surely that's what she was after.
"Did you not hear what I said?" he snapped. "That's something a pig farmer—"
"What's wrong with being a pig farmer?" she argued. "They work hard, live free, and dress for comfort."
"And I'll have you know, that outfit is not for farming," the shopkeeper added, visibly offended. "I mean, I suppose you could. It's certainly durable, but it's more for ... sophisticated roving."
"There you go," Tav giggled, harmlessly. "Don't you want to be a 'sophisticated rover', Astarion?"
He pulled back defensively, pursing his lips to hide his fangs. They live free? Dress for comfort? As if I ever had such a choice. She has no idea! His fingers curled into a fist.
"Are you ... mocking me? Is that what this is?"
Am I just a toy to you?! A doll to be dressed up to your liking?!
The air around him felt charged, a palpable tension that made it difficult to breathe. A deep red flush spread across his neck, creeping up towards his pale face. The anger was sudden, but uncontrollable, and he didn't know why.
Calm down, you fool. This is nothing. You've been through worse. He screamed internally. So then, why does it hurt more than usual? Why is it worse when it's her?! I ... I don't want her to see me this way, but I know she does! Who wouldn't?!
"Mocking you?" Tav asked, breaking the silence.
She tilted her head, the simple act pulling Astarion from is raging stupor. Her eyes were innocent, unassuming. And of course they were—he hadn't yet told her the truth about Cazador. The details. The depravity.
Hold on. Is this ... real?
"What are you saying?" she peeped. "I brought you here because of how worn out your clothes are." She pointed at the seams of his waistcoat. "Thin with crooked replacement stitches. I always see you fiddling with them."
Astarion's throat tightened. So she did notice. He tried not to blush.
"I'm sorry if that came off the wrong way. I wasn't trying to insult your clothes, I just thought you might like something new."
"I ... see."
"If you don't like the black and white..." She smiled and gestured to the shopkeeper. "We can order something with colour. Do you take commissions? Can my friend here make alterations?"
Friend?
"He can. And we do indeed sew to order, but it might take a while. I'm down a seamstress this month."
Astarion paused, their voices fading. He looked down at the sleeved tunic and accompanying vest that Tav held close to her chest. It was thick, surprisingly well crafted, and more fashionable than he initially dared to admit. For a moment, he felt his unbeating heart flutter. New clothes. A whole outfit, just for him. He'd forgotten what that felt like. What shopping for anything other than a victim for Cazador felt like.
Against his better judgement, he reached out and rubbed the material between his fingers. Twill. Handcrafted. Warm. He felt a tingle as he realised Tav didn't choose that outfit at random. She'd put a lot of thought into it.
"I want this one."
"Sorry?" Tav said, glancing up at him.
"This outfit." He tugged at the sleeve, gently. "I want this one."
She smiled. "Are you sure? You didn't seem overly thrilled about it a second ago."
"Tch! Well, I changed my mind," he hissed. "What can I say?" His eyes softened. "It's grown on me. Just like your ... annoyingly infectious positivity."
"Alright, alright," she laughed, ignoring his jibe. "Can you ring this up, sir?"
Astarion's back stiffened as she reached for her coin purse. Money, right. That hadn't crossed his mind. As horrible as Cazador was, everything was provided. When allowed to sleep on a bed, it was there. When Cazador's guests wanted wine, it was there. Anything needed to rope in victims was given. He hadn't had to buy anything in nearly two hundred years.
"Wait, I—"
"It's no problem," Tav said, sensing his conflict. "I'm happy to do this."
"But..." He frowned, crossing his arms. "Well, don't expect anything back. If that's what you're after, you're going to be sorely disappointed."
"I don't expect anything back, Astarion." She handed the shopkeeper a roll of gold coins, then turned to him with another tender smile. "I'm just glad to help out a friend."
Astarion stood in silence, his brow twitching. A thought occurred to him—two words he hadn't felt the desire to say in two centuries. Two words he'd almost forgotten. He shifted from side to side, looking anywhere but at her, desperate for an escape from the vulnerability pressing down on him.
But I think she truly means it.
"I..."
His mouth opened, then closed again. He cleared his throat, trying to speak, but the silence lingered. He could tell she expected nothing, but for once he wanted to give a part of himself, by choice. Just a few words. The feeling inside him grew, a swell of gratitude he couldn't quite contain. Finally, he sighed and met her eyes with a smile.
"Thank you."

The many faces of John Quincy Adams based upon his portrait by John Singleton Copley.
In 1797, Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, quite unexpectedly received a shipping case. It contained this portrait of her twenty-eight-year-old son by John Singleton Copley, which Mrs. Susanna Copley had asked her husband to paint as a gift for her old friend. Abigail was delighted, and she wrote to John Quincy Adams on June 23, 1797, “It is allowed to be as fine a portrait as ever was taken, and what renders it peculiarly valuable to me is the expression, the animation, the true Character which gives it so pleasing a likeness . . . It is most elegantly Framed, and is painted in a masterly manner. No present could have been more acceptable.” John and Abigail Adams had visited London in the 1780s and had become friends with the artist and his wife, and Copley had painted a full-length portrait of John Adams in 1783. Copley had also painted a likeness of Abigail Adams, daughter of John and Abigail Adams, probably at about the same time, which was subsequently destroyed by fire. John Quincy Adams responded to his mother in a letter dated July 29, 1797, enlightening her on the circumstances under which his portrait had been painted: "The history of the Portrait which you received last March was this. While I was here, the last time, Mr. Copley told me that Mrs. Copley had long been wishing to send you some token of her remembrance and regard, and thinking that a likeness of your Son, would answer the purpose, requested me to sit to him; which I did accordingly and he produced a very excellent picture, as you see. I had it framed in a manner which might correspond to the merit of the painting, and after I left this Country it was sent out by Mr. Copley. . . . It is therefore to the delicate politeness of Mr. and Mrs. Copley, that we are indebted for a present so flattering to me, and in your maternal kindness so acceptable to you. They are well, with all their family and continue to remember you with affection."
John Quincy Adams was serving as the United States Minister to the Netherlands in 1796 when he sat for Copley, having been appointed by President George Washington in 1794. He was resident in London for several months in 1795 and 1796 to conduct negotiations concerning the ratification of the Jay Treaty, which resolved many issues remaining from the American Revolution. Even though Adams was a relatively young man, he had been chosen for these important positions because of his extraordinary education and upbringing. Since he had often accompanied his father when he was sent to Europe on government business, the younger Adams had traveled to France, Spain, the Low Countries, England, the German States, Russia, and Sweden by the time he was seventeen. Often John Adams’s business required lengthy stays, and John Quincy Adams had therefore been enrolled in schools in Paris and Amsterdam. Back in the United States in 1786, Adams entered Harvard College, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated the following year. Subsequently he studied law in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and then began to practice law in Boston.
Adams recorded seven sittings for his portrait from February to April 1796. Two of the notations provide an elucidating glimpse into the experience of posing for Copley. On March 4 he wrote: “At Mr. Copley’s all the morning sitting for my picture. Conversation with him political, metaphysical, and critical. His opinions not accurate, but well meaning.” On March 28: “At Mr. Copley’s all morning, sitting again for my picture. Stayed there too long gazing at his Charles [Charles I ], and at a portrait of the three youngest princesses [The Three Youngest Daughters of King George III, 1785, Royal Collection, United Kingdom], a finely finished thing.”
In a stylish oval format, the portrait shows a rather debonair John Quincy Adams with powdered hair, dressed in a black frock coat with a white stock and a glimpse of a pink waistcoat. He is set against a red curtain and a crepuscular landscape. Copley carefully delineated Adams’s features but painted the costume and background with dashing and loose brushwork.
Shortly after the portrait was completed, Adams became engaged to Louisa Catherine Johnson in London. He went on to a brilliant political career, serving in the United States Senate, as Minister to Russia, as Minister to England, and as Secretary of State. In 1825 he was elected the sixth president of the United States, and after he lost his bid for re-election, he represented Plymouth, Massachusetts, in Congress for the rest of his life. Adams also went on to have his portrait painted by many of the leading artists of his day; in all he sat for at least sixty likenesses. Of all these portraits, Adams decided that “Copley’s Portrait of 1796, Stuart’s head of 1825, and Durand’s of 1836 . . . are the only ones worthy of being preserved.

My new dream is becoming the Victorian middle class now.
(Without the work and only the clothes and certain ways of speaking to eachother)
Do you have any tips on how I can adapt to this in a good way without interfering with my usual day to day routine? If not, then welp- do I always wear vests or is it specific occasions only?
(i hope this makes sense)
Ok full disclosure I wrote a really long answer to this and Tumblr ate it, and idk if I have the energy to write it again
I think my biggest advice would be not to worry about fitting a certain aesthetic, or following any rules - wear what you would like to wear! Speak how you would like to speak!
I think it's hard enough to figure out how to dress for any particular occasion, without trying to factor how a certain demographic of people might have done so 130+ years ago.
But if you want to add a little late Victorian flavour into your wardrobe, I guess here are some ideas?
Coats and jackets - peacoats, frock coats, capulet coats, ulster coats...
A lot of styles of woollen coat that were popular at the turn of the 20th century still work today, and are fairly unisex.
I always smile at how modern Inspector Lestrade looks in his stylish peacoat:
But I think any woolen coat in a vintage style can have the right vibes.
As for waistcoats/vests, sure go for it if you'd like!
2. Accessories
I think hats and gloves can be a lot of fun! I actually started wearing hats all the time for ADHD reasons, because I kept leaving them everywhere. I realised either I had to stop wearing hats, or I had to decide to wear them all the time. So now I tend to always wear one when out of doors.
Everyone who knows me knows I love straw boaters, which were wore by men and women.
I posted a picture a while ago of me wearing a Tam o'Shanter, which I associate more with the Edwardians than the Victorians, but hey who cares if it's cute.
Funnily enough I feel like a lot of middle class hats are the ones that would seem far too formal to wear casually these days - top hats and bowlers etc.
But hats that people would have worn in the countryside or the more working-class hats are still popular.
Like the old button top hat, or flat caps... *sigh* deerstalkers.
Patterns.
I guess another approach would be to focus on patterns that were popular at that time, rather than the clothing styles themselves?
Black and white photos can cause us to forget that the later Victorians loved maximalism. They liked paisley patterns and eye-boggling colour.
(Like oh my gosh this coat)
I keep seeing clothes with William Morris patterns on and going YESSSSSSSSSS
So yeah, I hope that's the kind of thing you wanted!
I'm going to post this now and hope Tumblr doesn't eat it again.

continuing thoughts about The Gilded Age:
Some comments I've read online about it complain about the liberal use of greenscreen and CG to fill in the backdrop of 1880s New York City. I mean, you've got to do something because New York very much does not look like that any more. Just now I'm looking at an establishing shot at the start of S01E06, "Heads Have Rolled For Less," the scene of a disastrous train wreck. The crumpled carriage we see first is pretty clearly CG but parts of the wreckage the rescue workers are picking their way through look fairly real to me, as if they existed on location (it is, at least, a location shot in a place with grass and trees, and I think the Red Cross tents are real). And honestly, I don't care. It isn't horrendous. I don't feel that actually they should have spent the money to built a full-scale munted train carriage for an establishing shot, nor do I begrudge them the choice of establishing shot to remind us of the tragedy that we heard happened at the end of the previous episode and make it clear what a serious crash it was. Could they probably have made it look more realistic by allocating more of a budget to it? Probably, but I hope they spent the money on wardrobe instead.
Fuckin' love the wardrobe on this show. Just smashing frock after smashing frock. The dresses in particular look richly detailed and (as far as I'm any judge) well-made, nothing half-arsed. As they should because fashion is such an important part of conspicuous consumption and conspicuous consumption is Bertha Russell's whole thing.
Peggy Scott's well-made and stylish clothes (but still more humble in some ways than the white ladies' - she wears much more plaid than they do and it sets her apart visually in addition to her skin colour) make it very clear from the beginning that she's both prosperous and polished, which makes Marian's abject tomfoolery in taking a carpet bag of old shoes as a charitable gift when she dropped in uninvited to Peggy's parents' substantial and handsome Brooklyn house all the. more glaring. Seriously, Marian. Dumbass.
Marian's pretty bland guys. Seems perfectly nice. Pretty hair. Very bland. Apparently the actress is one of Meryl Streep's daughters. For how much time we spend with Marian I wish she had more of an "I want" about her. She thinks she'd like to find some useful work to do. She doesn't have an ambition or any talents we've seen. She's just generally wishy-washy.
That grumpy lady is probably going to smother her pie-wasting hag of an invalid mother, right?

Dumortierite aesthetic moodboard!!
Dumortierite:
Appearance: Dumortierite stands tall and imposing, his entire form a deep, dark blue with intricate black patterns and veins coursing through his skin, giving him an almost marble-like appearance. His gemstone, a square-cut jewel, is prominently set on the nape of his neck, glowing faintly with an eerie luminescence.
His eyes are a piercing blue, filled with a steely determination and a hint of the battles he's endured. His hair is a midnight blue, cut short and neatly styled, fitting the refined yet rugged look of a Victorian gentleman.
Attire: Dumortierite's attire is both practical for his dangerous profession and reflective of the Victorian era's fashion. He wears a dark blue, tailored frock coat with black, intricate embroidery along the lapels and cuffs. The coat is long, reaching just above his knees, and cinched at the waist with a wide, black leather belt adorned with various pouches and holsters for his weapons and tools.
Beneath his coat, he dons a high-collared, light blue dress shirt with a black cravat, adding a touch of elegance to his otherwise utilitarian outfit. His dark blue waistcoat, embroidered with black patterns, matches his coat and provides additional storage with its multiple pockets.
His trousers are made of sturdy, dark blue fabric, tailored for ease of movement while maintaining a sophisticated appearance. They are tucked into knee-high, black leather boots, which are both practical for the rough terrains he often traverses and stylish, fitting the era's fashion.
Dumortierite also wears black leather gloves, fingerless to allow for better grip and dexterity while handling his various weapons. Completing his look is a dark blue, wide-brimmed hat with a black band, providing some protection against the elements and adding to his mysterious and formidable presence.
Personality: Dumortierite is a stoic and determined individual, driven by a relentless pursuit of the supernatural beings that plague the Victorian world. He is highly intelligent, with a keen mind for strategy and a deep knowledge of the occult and the creatures he hunts.
Despite his stern exterior, he possesses a strong sense of justice and a desire to protect the innocent from the horrors of the night. He is methodical and meticulous in his work, always prepared and armed with a vast array of weapons and tools tailored to combat different monsters.
He carries the weight of his many battles and the losses he's endured, which has made him somewhat aloof and distant. However, those who earn his trust and respect find a loyal and courageous ally in him.
