I feel like something people need to know (especially on the tiktok side of fandoms) is that
putting a different queer identity onto a character with a pre established queer identity is still erasure of the previous queer identity
the statement "he could be bi" is thrown around a LOT on the eng hsr fandom (especially regarding blade, but aventurine too, dan heng does still get this treatment from the found family shippers too) on tiktok and it, really makes my blood boil because that's such a shitty argument (my post is mainly going to be about making canonical gay characters bisexual or lesbians but this can be used for making bi/pan characters monosexual or doing the flip flop for making lesbian characters bisexual or gay but lets go)
the statement "he could be bi" is so shoddy, because of the word "could," characters shouldn't have to look directly into the camera, and go "i am a homosexual" for a sexuality to be confirmed. A male character who shows exclusive attraction to men, should be enough to go "he is gay." Also censorship is a thing that would make coding extremely important. Like also what proof do you have of him being mlw? cmon? something that isn't fanon? where's him being ATTRACTED to women? oh that's right there is none!
also not to mention, a lot of the "oh he could be bi" crowd doesn't even CARE for bi representation, they just wanna ship a gay man with a woman, that's it. Also important to mention that 99% of this crowd will pretend to care about biphobia and then turn around and hc canonically bi characters gay/lesbian
tl;dr: respect canonical queer identities, there are thousands upon thousands of characters you can headcanon whatever you want, but these FEW characters are already confirmed, leave them alone

We're delighted to announce that we received more indirect backlash!
While it's satisfying to see that our most insignificant opinion is still sparking so much outrage, it's sad to see people who quote our posts verbatim and still won't debate with us -about the things they care so deeply about-, and instead prefer to indirect us after inhibiting us from answering.
But since we aren't the part that's afraid of confrontation, we're very happy to address all your concerns -because we're clearly not talking about arguments here-.
Tumblr media
Let's start with @kingtycoon13 ; we're happy you enjoy Gale's romance with a male Tav so much, to each their own.
We hope that the fact that two people, the two admins of this blog, reading his character as straight doesn't ruin the kind of story you enjoy playing and fantasizing about.
Because if this were the case, we wouldn't be the ones who are limiting you and your imagination, but the fact you can't enjoy something unless everyone in your space wholeheartedly supports it. Judging by the outrage that pervades your post, our concern isn't far from the truth.
About the old but gold parroting of "Larian said every character is pansexual", we actually have a really good post that addresses this argument, quoting the very interview that is so dear to every one of you, so we invite you and every one who is concerned about the sacred canon to check it out: https://www.tumblr.com/absolutehomosexuals/752166291461292032/after-all-the-backlash-we-received-we-decided-to?source=share
Tumblr media
The second half of your post is what worries us the most. As we already stated, you claim you can't just enjoy your favourite romance because the whole fandom doesn't agree with you.
You realize it isn't the supposed biphobia that is making you shake, it's the fact that your personal interpretation of a character, something that depends on your personal taste, isn't what every single person who's ever played BG3 shares.
We're the ones that made a blog specifically about the sexual orientation of a particular character, and yet we aren't the most pressed ones about the matter. That's ironic to say the least.
But let's talk about the other user who answered your prayer now.
Tumblr media
So @onlyancunin is convinced that we lack imagination -because that's the only reason why you'd interpret a character as straight. Or gay and lesbian I guess, since the "problem" you're pointing out is specifically about not seeing a character as bi or pan.
What you're saying is that reading any character as not attracted to both sexes is a lacking approach. You're stating that thinking Gale isn't attracted to men is limiting, and following that same argument you could say that reading Astarion as gay or Lae'zel as a lesbian is the same: it's boring.
That's the thing we despise the most about this fandom: the fact that it's widely accepted to say that any sexual orientation that isn't bi/pansexuality is boring, less imaginative or limiting.
And as two lesbians, this approach pisses us off to an immense degree: trust us, we hate sounding like those people who throw their sexual orientation in the discussion just to gain sympathy points, but specifying this is crucial to the argument.
Because why is interpreting every single companion as the same exact thing more interesting than recognising some of them as lesbians, some as bi, some as gay and some as straight? Why don't you think every sexuality is equally enriching for each character's personal story?
We're not here to convince anyone, to instil pity in you crying out about any kind of -phobia and oppression, to guilt trip you into caring about headcanons that simply aren't your cup of tea.
We're just pointing out how ridiculous the approach to this discourse is getting.

Hi, I would like to talk to you about your comment under my friend Summer's post. As a lesbian, I have to say that saying that "bisexuals exist" under a post about a character being seen as a lesbian/lesbian-coded is pretty lesbophobic of you even if you didn't mean it, as many times posts about characters being seen as lesbians whether canon or not get derailed with people saying that the character "could/should" be bi(and thus making it so that the character is into men). Also Summer is a bisexual Black woman so them getting rid of Percabeth isn't misogynoir and it's certainly not bisexual erasure because, like they said, Percabeth is incredibly cisheteronormative and REEKS of comphet. Also a lot of lesbians see themselves in Annabeth and agree that she is lesbian-coded and that her relationship with Percy can be seen as comphet, including myself. Respectfully, this was not your place to go "bisexuals exist". Yes, we know that bisexuals exist, as op is a literal bisexual himself, but that doesn't excuse derailing a post about a character being perceived as a lesbian with "okay but they could be bisexual ackshully". Yes, bisexual erasure exists, but a character being seen as a lesbian when they are portrayed straight in canon ain't it. Women and lesbians in particular face a lot of pressure to be into men and to center men in their lives, so you saying "bisexuals exist" is adding to that societal pressure even if you think it's not, even if you think you're doing something good. If you see Annabeth as bi, then make your own post about it. Don't come onto a post about her not liking men to remind us/op that she could like men. We already know that women are expected to like men. I'd appreciate it if you apologized and deleted your reblog. Thank you.
Hi thisismisogynoir, I appreciate that you and your friend are of a certain opinion here wrt Annabeth being lesbiancoded.  But I’ve been in fandom for over 20 years, and I’d like to share my perspective.
There are two fundamental topics going on here, race and queerness.
First, race: there’s this urge when there’s a racebent female character (and Annabeth is now Black) that fandom wants to sever her ties to the main character and usually its romantic.
For example, take cw’s the flash. In the comics, Iris was white but for the tv show the CW hired Candice Patton, a black woman. Lots of people were angry about this and  were insisting that the white redhead in the cast (caitlin snow played by danielle panabaker)  should be Barry’s love interest instead. They were very persistent and made fandom unbearable.  Another example, the original Roswell series had Maria DeLuca played by a white actress, but for the reboot, Roswell New Mexico, they racebent Maria Deluca and cast the afrolatina Heather Hemmens in the role.  Now that Heather was Maria, everyone wanted Maria to not be in love with Michael anymore  and the showrunners just so happened to give Michael another love interest, the whitepassing Alex. Michael was still one of the main characters and Maria, who was now a Black girl, was separated from him in favor of this whitepassing male character Alex.  There’s even an older, much more blatant example of this in the form of Nyota Uhura (yes I know she’s never been racebent but bear with me).  Back in the original series Uhura had chemistry mainly with two people, Chapel and Spock.  (  Now granted I loved original series Chahura (not really sure on the actual spelling of their shipping portmanteau sorry) shipping but now in the reboot Kelvin timeline there’s this urge to declare Uhura a lesbian again, when she has a canon romance with Spock.  There are plenty more examples of this pattern.
I realize you’re both Black and I’m not, and I really don’t want it to seem like I’m dismissing your lived experiences.  With all due respect though, it kinda doesn’t matter that you’re Black in this case?  It doesn’t really matter that you don’t intend misogynoir but rather what the impact is of this particular post. If the intent is to make Annabeth a more fleshed out character, that I can wholeheartedly agree with.  However you’re opening up a dangerous avenue where white fans can point to you and say "well here’s two Black women who agree with me that Annabeth should be kept far away from Percy!!!”  except they won’t word it that way they’ll use your words and say “here’s two Black fans that want Leahbeth to be a lesbian because she’s lesbian coded!!”
Speaking of, let’s talk about queerness.I get that there’s lots of different readings for canon but I’m kinda worried that you are mistaking your fanon reading of Annabeth as a lesbian and trying to project it on Leah/Annabeth, Imagining additional experiences unaddressed in canon is fair game, but it’s honestly hurtful to undercut, take away, and reduce a character’s experiences. IMHO you can advocate for a more fleshed out characterization of Annabeth without excluding the fans like me who really appreciated Percabeth. And yes I am biromantic asexual so I would love to see another bisexual character be the main focus of a new, mainstream show.

hi! what are your sexuality headcanons? for byler and any other characters! :) feel free to go into depth if you'd like 💛
hello!
cracks my knuckles. i got u, brother 🫡
will: gay! he loves boys and wants to kiss them and marry them and make his own place in the world with one. he has always known this and has never had the privilege of not knowing this. he is Very Gay and the love he feels for one boy in particular makes him feel like he isn't a mistake at all.
mike: gay gay homosexual gay of the homotron 6000 variety. "whether you love what you love or live in divided ceaseless revolt against it, what you love is your fate" sums it up perfectly. he can't escape his heart and the truths it holds, no matter how hard he tries sometimes. following it is instinctive and the best thing he's ever done, yes, but it can also be very hard to adjust your eyes to the light after living in the dark for so long.
el: i don't think she's too keen on labels. she's sure of her attraction to women, feels safer with them and has always thought they were pretty, but she isn't totally sure of her attraction to men. sometimes she thinks she does like them, sometimes she thinks maybe she just expects herself to or wants them to like her (which isn't the same thing). it all just depends on the person. she doesn't want to rule anyone out. show her love and maybe she'll show you some in return, too. i also hc that max was her sapphic awakening hehe. she made her feel so loved, so seen and cherished, that she wondered for the first time if she could love a woman like that. her answer to that of course was, well... why not?
dustin: this post. overly enthusiastic straight ally friend that vows not to get married until everyone can get married. would 100% wingman for you unprompted. tries to set everyone around him up and talks about their love lives with the same ease that he talks about his own. love is love and all that shit, you know.
lucas: "straight" but with a hint of unearthed bisexuality in him. he assumes everyone thinks people of any gender can be handsome and pretty. he's a devoted, kind, and attentive person, so his platonic and romantic crushes aren't too distinct; and as such, he's just never caught on and no one's ever assumed anything either. mike gushes to him about will and lucas is just like "??? and this is a big deal, because...? 🤨 we all have eyes, mike." mike gets so caught up in lucas thinking will is attractive + his resulting slightly possessive outburst that he forgets to focus on the "lucas thinks men are attractive, too" part. i mean, he grew up around mike and will, fell for a tomboy, and erica jokingly calls jason his boyfriend. that boy has bi potential, but is living in blissful ignorance. (max sometimes wants to burst his bubble, but decides he'll get there on his own someday. ...eventually, maybe.)
max: bisexual! she doesn't mention it, but if you somehow assume she's straight then tbh that's on you at this point. (tomboy gnc max from s2 you will always be famous.)
jonathan: jonathan talks a lot about bowie, likes his music, is way too passionate about being a "freak", doesn't care to be normal and isn't, gets called queer, and has always encouraged will to be true to himself. he's either the best straight guy on planet earth + best honorary member of the lgbt community + the best straight gay icon or he's pansexual but quiet about it because it's not exactly like he's a hot commodity so he mostly just doesn't really focus on it. he has bigger fish to fry anyway.
argyle: mr "try before you deny" with his rainbow socks that humbled mike immediately after he broke will's heart is undoubtedly pansexual, too. why do you think him and jonathan bonded so fast? birds of a feather flock together, man.
nancy: sorry, but she's straight.
steve: also straight. i have eyes, okay? joe is not leaning in to the fruitiness of his male scene partners lol.
robin: lesbian dyke lesbian lesbian lesbian dyke lesbian lesbo lord 9000. she loves women, she wants to kiss women, she wants to date women, and she also likes boobies. a lesbianic lesbian of the lesbo variety of lesbians.
vickie: bisexual!
murray: i feel like he's Above it all. you have to be THAT bitch for him to even think about thinking about you like that. you have to be on his Level. you have to be Built Different. you gotta have real eyes that realize real lies. he's a malewife girlboss self-sustaining icon. he doesn't Need u. he has to Want u. you have to bring something to the table that he hasn't already set out. so, like... already, his options are very limited, because he's operating on an entirely different level, playing a whole other game. so, like, technically... bisexual, i guess. but he just hasn't found anyone that does something for him that he can't do himself. so, like. .. no-sexual... ? bye-sexual...? he doesn't care—about your gender, you, or playing games. bring the heat or stay out of the kitchen tbh.

I swear I'm going somewhere with this
So lately on my Instagram I've been getting a lot of anime posts recommended to me (idk why I only follow like a couple Jojo fanartists on there...) and these accounts are very obviously run by cis straight men. And I'm always going on about how liking stuff is cool and expressing your enjoyment of things is great. Being embarrassed about liking things and ironic enjoyment is out. Genuineness is in. But then I get confronted with the side of fandoms that I don't normally interact with and they just seem to care about how "cool" something is and knowing Facts and arguing about what is cooler/stronger (while thinking women or queer fans are dumb for caring about relationships and emotions...?) and the way they talk about female characters in anime or women or queer people in general in fucking 2022 (some people still act like women aren't into geeky things??? at this point I was probably playing Sonic 2 and Primal Rage on the Sega Genesis and watching Sailor Moon and Digimon before you were BORN. Like people were wrong to say this in 2002 but the wrongness of saying it in 2022...) is, well..
youtube
And I have gotten asks from people (actually might just be one person, it's hard to tell since most of my asks are anonymous) about men in particular who enjoy shounen manga/anime and I usually side step is or go "yeah cis male fans sucks" because I am consciously aware, like I know in my brain, that basically all societies teach largely men that having emotions and being vulnerable isn't manly and men should only and always be stoic or aggressive and I know that must really suck. How terrible to think you can never be vulnerable or show most emotions. But emotionally I'm really tired of having to deal with these people that don't realize they been duped by society and don't want to learn or grow so I have to listen to them say dumb shit all day. You know how it is.
Anyway, that's a lot of preamble to say I've been thinking, I'm going to keep blaming Kishimoto for shit, don't get me wrong, but it seems that it's largely women or queer people (lesbian Sasuke stans rise up), if anyone, that realize Sasuke had a point. And if we as a society were more emotionally vulnerable and honest and didn't, say, call someone emo for having a negative reaction to their family getting murdered, would more people be on Sasuke's side. Like yes, a large portion of the Sasuke=bad thing comes from Kishimoto leading readers that way, but could more fans having the emotional intelligence to have sympathy for Sasuke and having them voice that and celebrate him have changed anything. If not with the manga then with anime additions like what I was saying about the ample possibility for more Uchiha stories that the anime continues to ignore despite them wanting to milk the franchise for all it's worth. Just my thoughts for the day.
