the fact that charles was so gentle and sincere with his answer to edwin's confession is something I could never forget... because that's what love is about, right?

love is in the way charles could never hurt edwin on purpose, is in the way he protects him, in the way he knows when edwin needs to be seen; love is in the choice of every one of his words, in the way he knows that being honest is the only right answer.

there's still forever waiting for them, there's still forever waiting for charles to figure it out, to discover if he loves edwin in a romantic way too, and it doesn't matter if is not romantic in the end, because that it's just a side of the love they share.

i think is so important not to overlook something like that, not to let that pending romance overshadow the fact that they already love each other in every other way.

because in the end, we are talking about two boys that have experienced excruciating pain, that have seen horrifying things during all their existences, and in spite of it, or maybe because of it, are capable of loving each other in a way that's so pure and strong and relentless...

reducing the importance of it to a reciprocated romantic love seems so simplistic and inconsiderate to me.

Snippet from yet another fic I'll never write. In this AU Max has long sharp teeth like a wolf sort of and other characteristics that make people call him "feral". This is set in an unspecified f1 season.

It's Jonathan who tells him.

It's rare for Jonathan to show up in Max's driver room. They talk a lot, obviously, but it's usually in the garage, or on the pit wall, or in one of the meeting rooms. He doesn't usually come knocking, especially when Max is just sitting down with some food and some data between interviews. It's probably one of the reasons why it immediately feels foreboding, even without the grim expression on Jonathan's face.

"Something wrong?" Max asks, setting down his fork and his tablet, forcing himself not to fidget.

Jonathan eyes the seat on the couch across to Max's chair, but then he stays standing. His expression doesn't lighten.

"I am not happy to tell you this, but the FIA has taken a decision regarding a rule during race weekends, effective immediately," he starts.

The bad feeling in Max's chest grows: Jonathan doesn't usually hesitate this much, he likes to go straight to the point, just like Max.

"A rule?"

Jonathan eyes the small couch again, and this time he sits down, sighing slightly.

"They have decided to reinstate the rule regarding preventive and protective devices."

Max feels the food in his stomach go sour.

Preventive and protective devices. The muzzle. They're bringing back the muzzle.

"I..." he stops, blinking, feeling suddenly lost. "Why?"

Jonathan's hand twitches a little, as if he wants to reach out, but then he decides not to.

"I don't think it's because of anything you have done, Max," he answers gently, an underlayer of anger in his words.

Max understands what he means. The mounting tension, the journalists turning yet again against him, the whispers and prejudice that have been growing louder again...it makes sense that this would be brought up again too.

But it doesn't make sense for the FIA to go along with it. He has been good. He has been calm and quiet, and careful not to ever scare anyone. It doesn't make sense.

"Max," Jonathan says, bringing his attention back to him, "we'll fight against it okay? It's not right, and we'll do anything we can to make them take it back again."

Max nods, almost robotic, none of Jonathan's words really registering. Effective immediately Jonathan has said, which mean...

"From today?" he asks, sounding young and lost to his own ears. He hasn't had to wear the muzzle in years, and even if he knows someone still carries his old one around, as per the rules, he hasn't even checked the fit for so long. They'll probably have to get a new one.

Jonathan nods, grimacing again, then opens his mouth. For a second Max wants to ask not to say whatever he's going to say, Max doesn't want to know, doesn't want any more bad news, but he won't be childish. Even if it means swallowing bile and clawing at his own legs, trying to will himself not to shake.

"They have added a new clause."

Max is going to throw up. He tries to breathe, tries to keep the whine climbing up his throat down.

"You'll have to wear the device" Jonathan spits the word with probably more hatred than he would use for the word muzzle, "that they provide, not the one we have. To make sure it is compliant with the regulations."

Max stares, the words getting lost in the buzz of his brain.

"I don't get it," he feels himself say, so far away it's like it's not even his mouth moving. "I didn't..."

He's numb and on fire at once, ants crawling up his legs, fingers trembling.

His teeth, his damn teeth, sink too hard in his bottom lip, and he tastes blood.

Hey, so... what if... I went a little insane for a minute? What if I just... concepted a character... for the sequel... to an AU... I've told no one about... and haven't even finished writing yet?
