No you know what. I thought Joker 2 was good. And I’m tired of pretending that it wasn’t. Reasons under the cut bc of spoilers.

Because the thing is… Arthur was never the incel power fantasy that a lot of people made him out to be the first time around. He was never a true figure of “white male rage” because fundamentally he was a figure of an extraordinary level of social/classist and interpersonal abuse that led him to violence that liberated him from that (as is the case with MANY mentally ill and socially disenfranchised people in the world), but the violence was absolutely never the thing that defined him as a character, but that’s always the first thing that people miss when a character is reduced to black and white elements in the zeitgeist. But this movie definitively proved that all of the incel dude filmbros, as well as average detractors who reduced him to that “white male rage” narrative the first time around were not reflective of him as a character because in the end, even ARTHUR HIMSELF held himself accountable for his crimes, even fessing up to killing his mother in the eleventh hour. And his subsequent death after this revelation even further drives home the point that how he exists as a figure of nuance could never survive in the world that created him OR the world that allegedly “embraced” him. And I think that’s kind of beautiful from a meta-narrative standpoint and VERY faithful to how the first film operated.

Ghost doesn't believe Soap the first time he says 'I love you'.

He hears the words, appreciates the sentiment. But he can't (or maybe won't) accept it as the truth. He thinks Soap must just be infatuated; once he sees who Ghost really is, he'll hate him and leave.

And then a grenade knocks a wall onto Ghost. He's pinned beneath the rubble, and it's like being in that damn coffin all over again. When the team finally frees him, Ghost is trembling and sobbing and dry heaving from utter terror. Soap tries to comfort him, but Ghost snaps. Shouts that Soap doesn't understand. That he's not fucking helping. That he should piss off and leave him the fuck alone.

Yes, Ghost is being unkind, and that's not okay. But Soap knows Ghost doesn't mean to hurt him. He's panicking. He's having flashbacks and wants to hide his pain and fear from the world. Doesn't want anyone to see his weakness and take advantage of it.

Soap refuses to leave.

He waits outside the door of the supply closet Ghost locks himself into. He waits and waits and waits. When Ghost thinks Soap has finally left, he opens the door. Only to find Soap there, still waiting. With tears in his eyes, Ghost asks why he stayed. After every hurtful word he threw at him, how could Soap still stand to look at him?

Because I love you, Soap replies. And this time, Ghost believes it.

(ID: Kirby series fanart of Galacta Knight and my personal interpretation of his Mirror World counterpart. GK hovers above facing slightly to our left, his feathery wings spread wide, shaded in lilac and tipped with gilded wing talons, a swallow-like tail visible. He holds his shield forward in his left hand (our right) and his lance to the side in his right (our left), a single magenta eye leering at the viewer through the visor of his mask. A halo of heart spears floats and shines angelically behind his horns. Below him, M!GK hovers in the same pose but flipped horizontally and without the halo. Visually, M!GK has mostly the same features as GK, with his color palette being darker and less saturated (dusty purple body, dark gray armor, gray mask, maroon lance, rose-gold horns and weapons accents). Hey, so... what if... I went a little insane for a minute? What if I just... concepted a character... for the sequel... to an AU... I've told no one about... and haven't even finished writing yet? What if I then... pulled the salt shaker labeled "ANGST" out of the pantry and just... unscrewed the cap all over this poor lad? Oh, and Galacta Knight's here, too, I guess.
