Evie (eh-vee, by the privates), Sister Gruh-Neer (by Aldo)

Born 1918, Montréal, eldest of 11. Catholic.

3 of her siblings died from tuberculosis in 1932, when Evie was 14, including her youngest sister, aged 2 at the time. Caring for them while her parents went out looking for work is what drove Evie to become a nurse.

Studies nursing at McGill university 1935, graduates in 1939 (aged 21).

Joined the war effort as a Nursing Sister as soon as she was eligible, 1940 (aged 22), with the Royal Canadian Air Force medical branch. As a Nursing Sister, she is given the rank of lieutenant.

Serves in England, caring for soldiers in hospitals, 1940-43. (She meets Sgt. Donovan Donowitz for the first time at one of these hospitals. They spend the night together and neither expect to see the other again.)

Is sent to France to act as medic and interpreter for a special American unit nicknamed "The Basterds", December 1943. (She meets Sgt. Donovan Donowitz again.) She is discharged and sent home for getting pregnant, May 1944 (aged 26). The father is KIA, that same year.

February 1945, her son is born.
