Josh doesn’t even recognize Eddie at first. He’s out at a gay bar, trying unsuccessfully to be picked up, when he sees a guy with a mustache sitting alone at the bar. He’s about to slide up next to him when he realizes, oh shit, that’s Eddie Diaz. They haven’t exactly kept in touch since Eddie left dispatch to go back to firefighting full time, but they run in such tight circles that it’s not like they’ve been able to avoid each other either. Josh has seen Eddie on a number of occasions over the last few years, most recently at Maddie’s wedding. He did not have a mustache then. Eddie looks… well, he’s always been hot, but this is on another level. He’s got a kind of Freddie Mercury thing going on now. Maybe Tom of Finland, if he were wearing more leather and less clothing. It works on him. It really, really works on him. But Eddie also looks miserable. He’s staring down into his drink (Josh thinks maybe it’s whiskey?) not even frowning, not like he’s deep in contemplation, just completely blank. Empty. The mustache is hot, obviously, but it’s not a good sign. Something happened to Eddie that made him need to change who he sees in the mirror, and from the expressionless way he’s throwing back straight liquor he’s not dealing with it well. A wave of annoyance washes through Josh. Fuck. This is his problem now. Josh would love to walk away, would love to leave Eddie to do whatever he came to a gay bar to do, but he’s so clearly in the midst of a crisis. Josh’s first responder instinct won’t let him walk away from someone who needs help.
