they’re both intensely isolated, good at engineering, they grew up idolizing guardian figures they never really got to know and only have afterimages of, interested in combat, they both live in the middle of the ocean surrounded by vesitges of alternian culture (dirk with the drones, jake with the lusii), they’re both not great at communication and too scared of vulnerability to be up front about their feelings

the difference comes from their methods and attitude. jake is interested in escapist fantady stories to distract from his loneliness the same way dirk is interested in knowing everything he can about history, both are chasing stories that already ended. jake’s obsession with heroic stories leads him towards idealism and a somewhat simplistic view of heroism and what his options are as an individual; dirk’s obsession with history, the grim genocide of humanity and the events that led up to him and roxy being the only humans left alive bring him to a cynical attitude based more around subtle manipulations and making his friends “stronger” out of a fear of what he knows is coming for them.

they’re identically different. jake’s upbeat attitude complements and even helps dirk’s cynicism, we saw that in the dream memory when dirk decided to build hal because jake said he believed dirk could do it. similarly, dirk’s realism complements jake’s idealism and is able to keep jake from making risky moves (or trying to, like when lil seb had to scoop jake out of a burning derse while the rest of the group was KO’d). yeah, they’re both flawed, and the way dirk goes about some things is unfortunate, but they’re also kids and they’re best friends and they have mutual feelings for each other in canon, and they make each other better in many ways

It hit Kirk then.

Hit him like a sledgehammer but that didn’t mean he believed it because-

“Chekov.” He yanked the navigator back without thought, every hint of joking gone as he pressed closer. “Are you…Are you telling me that you’re engaged to Mr. Sulu?”

Kirk finds out something about his helmsmen he didn't know. How did he not know?
