Daniel hates the lab. He hates the stainless steel, the sharp angles and equipment wrapped in plastic. Everything is white and gray, bright fluorescent lights washing everything out, the purples and blues on pale faces of sleep deprived lab workers adding to the white-gray-blues of the place. Everyone is in a constant hurry, fuelled up on instant coffee and nervous energy, fast walking from one desk to another with a notepad or dragging one of the identical shiny stainless steel tables with them.
It reminds Daniel of a hospital. Of course it does, he thinks. The main difference being that unlike in hospitals, the rooms and tables here are filled with dead bodies or their remains.
Max's office is different. The walls are painted in warm orange, the floor covered with a plush brown carpet and a couple of cozy looking couches. Between them sit a glass coffee table covered in journals and magazines about something Daniel can't even begin to understand.
The walls are lined with cabinets filled with books and binders, glass shelves full of memorabilia from Max's trips and expeditions: a bunch of old and scary-looking skulls, a few small statues and a wooden sculpture that suspiciously looks like a dick.
Max is sitting at his desk, looking at a piece of paper with a tired and bored expression, his blue lab coat a stark contrast to the warm oranges and browns of his office. Daniel is sure that Max would never take his lab coat off, if he could wear it outside of work.
“Hey, Bones,” Daniel says with a short knock on the glass door.
Max looks up, a little startled, but quickly his face takes an expression of annoyance.
“I asked you to not call me that, Daniel.”
“And I told you to call me agent Ricciardo, so there's that. Did you want to see me?” 
Max nods his head at the question.“Yes. I have thought about your offer and came to a decision,” Max says without breaking eye contact, as Daniel steps fully into the room and sits in a plush chair by the desk.
“I agree to working with you and the FBI on solving cases. But—” 
It's Daniel's turn to look annoyed. Of course there's a "but".
“—But. I want to go on the field with you, investigate the scenes, do interrogations,” Max says, touching his fingers as he lists things. But Daniel quickly interrupts him.
“Absolutely not. Bones, don't even think about that.” Daniel stands up and looks down at Max with a stern expression. “This,” he gestures to the space around him, “is your place. The field is my place. What if you get hurt there? Lew will chop off my head with one of his scary blades if you do.”
Max looks up at him with an arched brow.
“You know that I can defend myself. You were there when I did.” And yeah, Daniel was there, saw with his own eyes how Max decked a guy for grabbing his arm.
“And what if you need my help on the field? What if you find remains that need to be assessed as soon as possible, or need my expertise knowledge on human anatomy, or if a suspect speaks one of the many languages you don't know but I do?” - he again taps his fingers at each scenario. 
“And if you are so scared for my safety, I can always learn how to shoot a gun.”
At this Daniel jolts and shakes his head. 
“You will not pick up a gun while I'm alive.” Daniel furrows his brows and looks Max in the eyes. Max looks up at him triumphantly. Daniel sighs. 
“Fine, you can go onto the field with me, but I'm the boss there, right? You will listen to me and follow my lead.” Daniel points to his chest with his thumb as to make the point more clear, but Max isn't listening. His face is split with a smile so big his eyes crinkle. It's like Daniel told him the best news in the world instead of allowing him to potentially get himself killed at work. Still, Daniel returns the smile.
After a moment, Max takes his eyes away from Daniel's face and looks at the time.
“Do you have time? It's my lunch break, maybe we can go grab food together?” If Daniel didn't know him, he would think Max looks nervous.
“Sure, let's go.” Max smiles again and stands up to take off his lab coat. He is wearing a white t-shirt underneath it, but Daniel still looks away.

I was wondering if you might be able to help me nail down some details for an idea that's been rattling around in my brain for over a year now, especially since being a mortician makes you the perfect person to ask!
Question #1 - What does the room where the cadavers are prepared smell like? (an odd question, I know!)
Question #2 - In funeral homes, are there cameras recording what goes on in the embalming room as if it were a hospital?
Question #3 - Here's a more...complicated one. All modern embalming tools seem to be made of stainless steel, but, what about...older ones? Ones from, let's say, the 1920's to the 1940's?
Might they have been, oh, I don't know...chrome plated? 👀
Any help is very much appreciated, and if I eventually make something of it, I will quite happily credit you for the help!
hello my friend!! I am always happy to answer mortuary questions as best as I can!
#1: the embalming room itself usually smells like disinfectant, unless an embalming is actively taking place. then it smells like embalming fluid. the smell of embalming fluid is really hard to describe--chemical and synthetic. they add fragrance to it, so it smells kind of like...nondescript sweetness. not fruity, not flowery, not organic at all. just...sweet.
of course, sometimes you get a decedent in there who has a fragrance all their own. that's a whole nother story.
#2: if a funeral home is equipped with cameras, they will predominantly be in spaces frequented by the public. I have been in many embalming rooms and never seen a camera inside one. I have seen a camera pointing at the door to the embalming room, but there are all sorts of dignity and privacy concerns about filming an actual embalming even passively.
#3: now this one is trickier. as far as I can find out, surgical instruments have been made of stainless steel for centuries. embalming instruments are the same or very similar. I can find information about chromium plating nowadays, but not so much historically. good luck on that one!

I am bringing expectations into this space. Expectations that feel as much like direction as they do a burden. Considering the need for new choreography, to move through and be in this space in a way I haven’t thought of before. Am I holding too tightly? How to see and speak with the past in a way that’s not clouded by the smog of use-value? I am asking wikipedia how snakes learn to shed themselves, how they know when it’s time. 
I am bringing a past that has leaked into the present like a body I drag behind me. It has been leaking and my hands are stained with my own blood. 
To call memories to the surface; is that consenting to a haunting?
To speak of lies and ask: 
What is the relationship between the truth and the past? 
Who are the arbiters of the truth around telling what happened in the past? 
Whose past is taken as truth?
And: How do you remember? How do you forget?
Forgetting is easy. Almost an involuntary twitch, the impulse of muscle. I forget like an animal. 
Forgetting is surgical, an anesthetized process. I don’t think I choose to forget, it doesn’t feel like an active process, but maybe that’s just because I’m good at it. I want to think there must be a moment of choice, even if it’s just a split second, where forgetting is active and decided upon. When I make a choice to forget something, am I aware of it? Do I notice it in the moment it happens? What sound does forgetting make? Can you hear it echo if you do it in a quiet room?
What’s the difference between forgetting and not-remembering?
Remembering is hard. Hard, because it’s directional, a reorientation that requires movement. 
Remembering is not as involuntary as forgetting, except when it is. Except when ‘remembering’ isn’t a choice; when it’s a flood, an intrusion of the past boiling into the present. When do I consent to remembering? When we remember, we are time travelers— what do I bring with me through the portal? 
The past takes on the shape of the tools I use to carve into it, the chisel I use to breach my memories; regret, shame, love, absolution, curiosity, anger, lust, fear, uncertainty...
To remember a past, I must know where to find it, I have to be able to locate that site called ‘past.’ I often feel lost, like I buried my past in the desert and didn’t memorize the landmarks correctly. So I wander, kicking at mounds of dirt hoping I might unearth myself from where I left it. Remembering feels like exploring a haunted house, one you know is haunted before you even open the door.
Is deliberate mis-remembering is a type of forgetting — or is what’s forgotten a total absence of memory?
How to remember without carrying the burden of truth?

the elevator opens to a hallway that leads through a set of two white doors. they open silently, swinging outwards at the press of a button. grey carpet.
it’s the fifth floor. the scent stays the same from elevator through the rest of the floor. a smell like purified air, constantly circling in vents, and rubbing alcohol, cleaning products. the smell of a hospital. they say its ammonia, but it’s different than that, sweeter, softer. medical grade soap and plastic, starched fabric and stainless steel. against the white, green and wooden accents serve as psychiatric gestures. down the hallway, a series of small bedrooms branching to the left, 4 doors leading to small rooms. Behind each door, identical wooden closets, cots, and small desks. the rooms have windows that look out over a courtyard, into more buildings, across at more windows. more white squares.
it’s always cold, but just cold enough for it to not be warm. on the right, a convex counter in the shape of a mandible. a small space to the right of the counter with couches and bean bags, a television on the wall, a rolling cart of medical equipment, blood pressure cuffs and thermometers, disposable dixie cups stacked in a tower.
When I try to write myself back into the space of the hospital, my jaw starts to hurt. When I remember, all my vital life force seems to concentrate in my joints, my jaw hinges. I’m not clenching my teeth, my muscles coil themselves deeper, forming tight spirals in the hollow pits of my skull. I need to swallow, but hesitate. I let myself pool up inside myself. I need to pee.
I want a past to open up to me, I want a keyhole to become a door.

Features: This bottle is equipped with a UV-C light in the cap, which self-cleans and purifies the water by neutralizing bacteria and viruses. This makes it excellent for international travel or areas where water quality might be uncertain. It also keeps water cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours.
Concerns: It requires charging for the UV feature, so you’ll need access to power, and it’s a bit pricier than standard bottles.

Phu Quoc, Vietnam, is a beautiful, laid-back island destination that offers serene beaches, cultural sites, and relaxing experiences ideal for senior solo travelers. Here’s a list of the main attractions and reasons why Phu Quoc is worth visiting. 
The beaches include Long Beach, which has calm, golden sand and clear waters that are perfect for gentle strolls on the shore. There are many resorts, restaurants, and cafes. Sunsets are stunning. Find a beachfront restaurant and enjoy your visit. Also, Sao Beach is similar, but with white sand, turquoise waters, and a great place to read a book and relax.

This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a beautiful escape into nature. Its trails are suitable for all fitness levels and feature tropical plants and wildlife.

This is Vietnam’s largest wildlife park, home to a range of animals worldwide. It’s well-maintained and offers a safe, comfortable way to see animals in spacious enclosures.

5. Ho Quoc Pagoda
A Buddhist pagoda with ocean views is located on a hilltop. It’s peaceful and an excellent place for a quiet moment of reflection.
Tip: Morning visits are lovely, with cooler temperatures and fewer people.
6. Fish Sauce Factories and Pepper farms
Phu Quoc is famous for its fish sauce, which is used throughout Vietnam. Visiting a fish sauce factory offers an interesting glimpse into this traditional process. The town is also known for its Pepper Farms.
7. Phu Quoc Cable Car
This record-breaking cable car ride connects An Thoi and Hon Thom Island, offering spectacular aerial views of the coastline and nearby islands.
This is a great way to see the islands from above, and Hon Thom has quiet beaches for a relaxed visit after the cable car ride.
