St. John House Rentals on the Beach: Your Guide to Real Estate and Life on St. John, US Virgin Islands
St. John, the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, offers breathtaking natural beauty, tranquil beaches, and a welcoming island community. Known for its laid-back charm and pristine beaches, St. John has become a favored destination for those seeking house rentals on the beach, investment properties, and land for sale to build their dream homes. With much of the island preserved as part of the Virgin Islands National Park, St. Johnâs real estate holds unique appeal for vacationers, long-term residents, and investors alike. Hereâs a comprehensive guide to St. John house rentals, real estate options, and the perks of island living.https://340realestatestjohn.com/listing/desert-rose-villa/
1. St. John House Rentals on the Beach
Whether you're planning a tropical vacation or looking for a long-term rental, St. John offers an array of stunning beachfront rentals. Renting a beach house on St. John allows visitors to immerse themselves in the island lifestyle, waking up to ocean views, and easy access to snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing.
Luxury Villas: St. Johnâs beach house rentals include luxurious oceanfront villas, complete with private pools, spacious decks, and direct beach access. Areas like Chocolate Hole, Peter Bay, and Cruz Bay are popular for upscale rentals that offer high-end amenities, privacy, and stunning views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea.
Family-Friendly Cottages: For families or larger groups, St. John also has beach cottages and villas with multiple bedrooms and kid-friendly amenities. These rentals are often located near Cruz Bay, where families can enjoy a variety of local restaurants, shops, and nearby beaches such as Maho Bay and Trunk Bay.
Vacation Rental Investment: St. Johnâs booming tourism industry makes beachfront house rentals a lucrative investment opportunity. Many buyers purchase properties specifically for vacation rentals, allowing them to offset costs with rental income while also having a private retreat to visit throughout the year. St. Johnâs consistent flow of tourists ensures high demand, particularly during peak seasons.
2. St. John Land for Sale
For those interested in building a custom home, St. John has land parcels available for purchase. Buying land on St. John allows you to design a property that meets your exact vision, whether youâre dreaming of a luxurious estate or a cozy beach house.
Prime Locations: Areas like Bordeaux Mountain and East End offer expansive plots with spectacular ocean views and natural surroundings. Land in these areas provides seclusion and tranquility, making it perfect for custom homes or private retreats. Coral Bay, a quieter part of the island, also has land available for development and offers a slower-paced, community-oriented atmosphere.
Environmental Considerations: Given St. Johnâs commitment to preserving its environment, itâs essential to be mindful of zoning laws and building regulations, especially when constructing near protected areas. Working with local architects and builders who understand the islandâs landscape and environmental policies can help you navigate the building process smoothly.
Investment Potential: Purchasing land on St. John is not only ideal for personal use but also holds strong investment potential. As a limited resource, land on the island is in high demand, and its value can appreciate significantly over time, particularly in scenic or secluded locations.
3. Real Estate Guide to St. John

Residents and visitors alike can enjoy world-class snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, and sailing. Popular destinations include Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, and Reef Bay Trail, which showcase the islandâs diverse wildlife and scenic landscapes.
Proximity to the Mainland: St. John is easily accessible from the U.S. mainland, with regular flights to nearby St. Thomas and a short ferry ride to St. John. hello have not been on here in literal years and reactivated simply to post my modern bridgerton hcs that came to me as i was falling asleep would not let me go until i wrote them down! enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~
the entire family is still very much british upper class - they regularly interact with the royals and attend all the family event like wimbledon and ascot. they are regularly featured in the pages of the tabloids much to their annoyance. they also went to either oxford, cambridge, or st. andrewâs (franny)
- anthony - still who he is, took over edmundâs position in the family business. huge company either a law firm, business like real estate or holdings. heâs ceo and damn good at his job. still viscount but it is really in name only.
- kate - still very much who she is, i can see her either going very much a lawyer or the artist route but i like to think of her as leaving her art as a hobby that she does simply for the pleasure of it.
- benedict - artist can do either painting or photography but has become very famous for it, initially it was because of the family name but then people started seeing his talent for what it is. his photos have been featured a bunch of times in british vogue and he is one of their go to photographers.
- sophie - very much a primary school teacher because of her experience with araminta as a child she was determined to not let that happen for other children so she makes damn sure that while they are at school in her class they know some one is looking out for them.
- colin - travel writer. he works for some magazine and has his own column. the magazine is owned by like some big media company that has their own building.
- penelope - pen works for a different magazine that is owned by the same parent company as colinâs so they work in the same building when colin is not on assignment. she secretly still runs lady whistledown that is like deux moi and once she gets outed she starts her own mini media empire. still besties with eloise.
- daphne - she is very much the perfect socialite philanthropist that is so perfect she seems like she would be a bitch but truly is that nice. is still married to simon after they fake dated due to some media scandal. lives her absolute best WAG life and has the season down to a science.
- simon - is a huge sports star, think david beckham. technically was still the duke but officially gave up the title to piss off his father. this man was born to be girl dad.
- eloise - once she realized just how much privilege she has, she put her money where her mouth is and is constantly going to protests much to anthonyâs annoyance (not because he doesnât agree with the cause just because she is giving the family a bad name in the press, he actually super proud of her.) el went to school for a degree in women and gender studies and is super involved in academia when not getting arrested.
- phillip/a - a botany professor at the university where el is based out of. still has the kids from their previous relationship with marina but they were able to get a divorce because it is the 21st century and co parent the twins quite well. their gender honestly doesnât matter for this, they love plants and eloise - the order of that is not important.
- francesca - autistic, it is important to me that you know that. she is a film composer, she loves getting to create the score for movies and that it doesnât require that much human interaction.
- john - still unfortunately passes away, but prior to that was some kind of finance guy. was generally the nicest guy and loved fran with his entire heart.
- michael/michaela - hot. like the most beautiful human being you have ever laid eyes on. they work as an actor because itâs fun but secretly are insanely smart and like build computers for fun.
- gregory - anthonyâs mini me and he wouldnât have it any other way. he works for the family company and loves it. generally small bean like but is insanely tall, like taller than benedict much to everyoneâs annoyance but no one more than hyacinth. he worships the ground lucy walks on but they only have three or four kids because they have access to birth control.
- lucy - a mini kate. also a lawyer whoâs family firm got bought by kateâs and then started working under her where she eventually met greg when he was visiting his favorite sister kate for their monthly lunch date. has ocd.
- hyacinth - a child prodigy, started university at like 15 (which she never lets greg forget) works as a ta (or whatever the uk equivalent is) for agatha who is an old family friend through whom she meets gareth. her field is like archeology or some other super niche thing. (agatha does not have to teach, she does it because if she doesnât how else will the new generation ever be taught the right way to do things)
- gareth - is so fucking chill but absolutely matches hyacinths freak. no one is quite sure what he does, he has explained it many times but no one truly knows even hyacinth.
- violet - was besties with princess diana (old money england) she unfortunately passes around the same time as edmund and she just loses it. luckily it is the modern days was able to get help but it took a little while. though once she is back on her feet she is a force to be reckoned with. she runs the family foundation which focuses on mental health and allergy awareness.
thank you for reading this! i will take no criticism at this time but welcome any addition thoughts!
On April 4th 1617 John Napier, the mathematician, died.
I hated maths with a vengeance at school, I'm not talking about counting, I can hold my own with that, but real maths. algebra, geometry, topology and worst of all logarithms, which we have Robert Napier to "thank" for, he introduced them in the early 17th century as a means to simplify calculations, aye right!
If John Napier had been born a common man he would maybe have been burnt at the stake, nothing to do with him and his maths nonsense but because he dabbled in the occult at a time when we were routinely setting such people on fire!
James VI was on the throne and his obsession with devilry consigned hundreds of unfortunates to the flames. Unless you were born of a noble family of course. A wee bit background on the Napier's his father was Sir Archibald Napier of Merchiston Castle, and his mother was Janet Bothwell, daughter of the politician and judge Francis Bothwell, Lord of Session, and a sister of Adam Bothwell who became the Bishop of Orkney. Archibald Napier was 16 years old when John Napier was born. John, as was the common practice for members of the nobility at that time, he was privately tutored and did not have formal education until he was 13, when he was sent to St Salvator's College, St Andrews. He dropped out of Uni and toured Europe for a time before returning to Scotland aged 21.
Back to his links with sorcery, several members of John Napierâs family â respected and wealthy participants of Edinburgh society - were commonly known to be wizards or sorcerers. Their necromantic power was feared by nobles as well as peasants from far and wide.
The family wizardry started with Napier's father, Sir Archibald, seventh Laird of Merchiston, who successfully predicted when Mary, then the former Queen of Scotland, would leave Lochleven Castle, where she was imprisoned. The story goes: "Claude Nan, the Queen's secretary, wrote that 'the Laird of Markyston (Sir Archibald), who had the reputation of being a great wizard, made bets with several persons to the amount of five hundred crowns, that by the 5th of May Her Majesty would be out of Lochleven." Mary escaped on 2 May 1568 â and the senior Napier was presumably wealthier for his prediction.
Sir Archibald married Janet Bothwell, sister of Adam, Bishop of Orkney, who the paper said was "a notorious necromancer", so that their son, the future mathematician, inherited "a double inclination towards the magic arts". This might explain some of John's odd behaviour. A necromancer is a wizard or magician by the way, I had to google it!
Tenants who lived on the vast Merchiston estate south-west of Edinburgh thought John to be a bit mysterious at times, Napier would be seen many evenings wearing a long gown, pacing outside his tower chamber, a private work area where he often would pass many long hours alone.
Many people thought that his pet black cockerel was a familiar â a supernatural being which assisted witches and wizards in their magical practice. However, the Napier family held the hereditary role of Kingâs Poulterer and Napier may have kept the cockerel on a whim but I have read he travelled not only with the bird but also with a black spider in a small box, not normal behaviour.
The Scottish writer and translator Sir Thomas Urquhart, who, told of a demonstration of devastating artillery Napier devised against the threat of invasion by Spain.
"He gave proof upon a large plaine in Scotland to the destruction of a great many herds of cattel and flocks of sheep, whereof some were distant from other half a mile on all sides and some a whole mile,"
A well as being a wizard and mathematician Napier was also a fervent Protestant, much of his writing is vehemently anti-Catholic even by the standards of the time. He was a man of contradictions though, as he is said to have had friends who were Catholic, including Alexander Seton, the Earl of Dunfermline, although the vast majority Catholics back then had to hide their faith.
The last interesting, and worrying, fact I found out about John Napier is that his cause of death according to wiki he died "from the effects of gout" at home in Merchiston tower, now I suffer from gout and it is bloody painful but I didn't know it could kill you!
back on my bullshit y'all. implausible historical scenario: southern alexander hamilton (pt 1: lavien & laurens version)
Part 2: Washington's son dramatic-ass version
my favorite hobby is shoving historical figures into impossible scenarios so i can get them to do what i want. once again made up some convoluted series of events just to create a hamilton wildly out of character- god forbid, a southerner who might even get along with thomas jefferson. here's the first implausible scenario that make it possible.
Alexander goes to live with his half brother Peter Lavien.
Peter Lavien was the legitimate child of Rachel Hamiltonâs first marriage. He moved to Beaufort, South Carolina in 1764 at eighteen and became a prominent merchant and member of the church. However, he returned to St. Croix in 1769 to settle his motherâs estate, aka get everything that she had wanted to go to James Jr. and Alexander. In 1769, the two boys were taken in by their cousin Peter Lytton (who died), and then Lyttonâs father, who also died a month later. Probable that this happened after Lavien had once again left St. Croix, but letâs just imagine that he for some reason takes pity on the boys - and takes them with him. Nothing makes sense here, roll with it.
It would be even sadder and morbidly funny if he only took Alexander. I say this because in his 1778 last Will and Testament Lavien left âAlexander Hamilton and his brother Robert Hamiltonâ a fairly substantial amount of money. One brother mustâve left a greater impression on him and maybe poor James Jr. hears this half brother who took his inheritance say âAlex and Robert can come with meâ and goes âWho tf is Robert, fuck thisâ and peaces out.Â
Now, politically: Extrapolating since Iâm not sure how prominent âprominent merchantâ is, but maybe this means that Alex has the chance to meet prominent southerners early on, who like many others, are charmed by his energy and precocity. Does this mean he has more affection and allegiance for South Carolina than he did in real life for St. Croix? Does his politics and economic experience change? Assuming that like Washington, wartime experience is enough to make him a nationalist and he still had some experience at Crugerâs (and maybe helping Lavien) and thus does not have differing economic beliefs, his enemies would lose out on a major attack: perceived bias to the North. His connection to the Schuyler family would still serve, but maybe without as much weight, since he has those southern connections.Â
I love the idea of a South Carolinian Alexander Hamilton who grows up in a fairly secure American home with a steady guardian. The personal implications! The family drama of being forced to rely on a half brother who resents you for taking his mom, and who you resent back for taking your inheritance! Does this give him more issues, less issues? No idea! Even worse, Lavien was apparently a Tory, so thereâs that. Two brothers who perhaps got closer over the years, split apart again by political differences. âI take pity on a bastard brat and you repay me with this?â type shit. Lavien moved out to Georgia in 1777, and apparently died in 1780 or 1781 which means Hamilton wouldâve been a prominent aide de camp to the commander in chief, and potentially married into a great New York family when it happens. How would he react to that?
And I canât give up the idea of Colonel Alexander Hamilton of South Carolina meeting John Laurens of South Carolina. Maybe I push it further and say they meet early on and become childhood friends, even.
This is really stretching it but idc, they get to be childhood friends and Hamilton gains the favor of Henry Laurens. Maybe they even go to Europe together, wreak havoc on everything, and then disobey both Laurens' worried father and Alexander's Tory brother to join the army as aide de camps.
Maybe in this universe, Hamilton is chosen to go to South Carolina instead of John Laurens and their fates are switched. Maybe Henry Laurens who still wants to keep his kid out of danger asks Hamilton to go in his stead and pushes Washington about it, and Hamilton, wanting a command, readily agrees. Maybe that continues on after Yorktown, when Hamilton returns to South Carolina. Maybe Laurens has to learn that Hamilton died in a skirmish through a letter from his father and vows to continue on their shared dreams and Hamilton's plans, becoming the influential but even more abrasive leader of the federalist party. i want to see the switch, where it's the more idealistic laurens who isn't a good politician either (the two of them are a disaster) enters the public arena to be slandered and corrupted - laurens who is isolated from his fellow southerners and who seems to be mourning someone constantly and washington knowing exactly who it is. a laurens who looks back and yearns for a promising, brilliant young man who could've done so much more if he only had the chance WAIT WHO SAID THAT-
#i'm sorry but this has been rotting my brain for days#i don't care if it would've never happened it's real to me#and i need to get the roadtrip across europe with lams and the homies coming of age movie#and then i need to see the utter tragedy afterwards#alexander hamilton#peter lavien#john laurens#historical hamilton#amrev#lams#historical lams
Days Without End by Sebastian Barry. Stunningly lyrical prose, especially the descriptions of the early US landscape. Also a nuanced, complex, and difficult read about American immigrants, indigenous peoples, the way forces beyond their control pitted them against each other and the moments of love that shine through regardless. The main character is queer in a way that is very simple and natural, which I enjoyed as well. Definitely a hard read with no heroes and a lot of villains, but well worth it.
2) A book I recommend:
Easy Beauty by Chloe Cooper Jones.
Y'all. READ THIS BOOK. An intimate portrait of what it's like to live with a severe and very visible physical disability. Cooper Jones has a PhD in philosophy and is interested in how we conceive of beauty, and what that means for someone who's body will never be considered conventionally beautiful. However, it's written more like a memoir, and is super accessible and imminently readable.
3) A book that I couldnât put down:
The Wager by David Grann. Great real life shipwreck story, including a bunch of excerpts from the diary of famous poet John Keats' uncle, who was one of the shipwrecked men. What really, really got to me in this one was the division into factions and the various reactions to offered help from the indigenous people.
4) A book Iâve read twice (or more)
Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. Wanderlust, ecological grief, complicated romantic relationships, and a protagonist who can't stop leaving but loves so hard she's willing to die for it. Plus, boats! Scientific research, sort of! Found family! This book was like reading my own soul.
5) A book on my TBR
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. I've been meaning to read it and just picked it up at an estate sale!
6) A book Iâve put down
Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold. I read The Curse of Chalion and loved it, but this one just didn't grab me the same way. Maybe it wasn't the right time.
7) A book on my wish list
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. I've wanted to read it for ages but just haven't gotten around to it.
8) A favourite book from childhood
Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith. I read it so much my copy it's basically disintegrating. I really resonated with the complexity of Mel-- a young woman who is very practical and unimpressed by fanciness/politics but who comes to understand and value these things, and the people who use them, without losing herself.
9) A book you would give a friend
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. Really interesting take on what a flu pandemic that wipes out 99% of the world's population would leave behind, with a focus on the importance of art. I'd have them read it and then FORCE them to watch the TV series of the same name, because I am DESPERATE to talk to someone about the changes they made (which I absolutely LOVVVVEEE)
10) The most books you own by a single author
Probably Tamora Pierce?
11) A nonfiction book you own
LOTS but I'm gonna say Kon Tiki by Thor Heyerdahl. One of my very first true adventure books and so near and dear to my heart. Those guys really did float on a raft from Peru to Tahiti! For science!
12) what are you currently reading
Just started Lucky Red by Claudia Cravens. I'm a ho for queer westerns.
13) what are you planning on reading next?
I have a couple possibilities on deck, so it just depends on what grabs me (or what comes in from my library holds first). Wavewalker by Suzanne Heywood is by next hold on Libby--I'm fascinated by memoirs about what looked like a charmed life from the outside but was in reality anything but.
Alexander Miles (May 18, 1838 â May 7, 1918) Born near Circleville, Ohio to Michael Miles and Mary Pompy, he is an inventor known for patenting his design for improving the automatic opening and closing of elevator doors. The patent was issued on October 11, 1887 (US Patent 371,207).
He moved to Winona, Minnesota in 1870 and met his wife, Candance J. Dunlap. In 1879, he relocated his family to Duluth after the birth of their daughter.
Before moving to Winona, Minnesota, he began exploring his passion for inventing, first by creating hair care products while working as a barber in Wisconsin. He began operating a barbershop in the St. Louis Hotel. By using his earnings to purchase a real estate office, he became the first African-American member of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce. In 1884, he erected a three-story brownstone building in Duluth, transforming the surrounding area into âMiles Block.â began developing his concept to improve the function of the elevator door.
Despite John W. Meakerâs patented invention of the first automatic elevator door system (US Patent 147,853) in 1874, many elevators still required the doors and the shaft to be manually opened and closed. He became concerned with the dangerous risks associated with elevators once he noticed a shaft door left open during a ride with his young daughter. Although Meaker received the patent first, it was his innovation that made electric-powered elevator doors widely accepted around the world. Today, the influence of his patent is present in modern designs for elevator systems in which automatic doors are a standard feature.
He and his family relocated to Chicago, where founded The United Brotherhood, a life insurance company that sold life insurance primarily to African Americans who could not get coverage from white-owned firms. Due to Chicagoâs economic challenges at the time, he and his family relocated once again to Seattle. Partly because of the success of his invention, he was known to be the wealthiest African American in the Pacific Northwest region. In 2007, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
