she's not a fictional character but she is a brand so... close enough.

i used to listen to blank space and interpret it as a fun and clever satire of her persona. unfortunately, now blank space feels like an accurate description of herself and her lifestyle instead of an exaggeration.

I have successfully modified the Soul locket. Mr. Woods can choose to push a button, allowing the spiritd to manifest in spectral form outside of the locket and his body, although they are still tethered to the locket. Ten showed me a picture of Genie from the original Aladdin movies as a comparison and I do believe he is correct

Week ending: 16th March

After a very silly track last week, I think I was ready for something more serious, a "proper" non-novelty song. And you know what? This was exactly that. I didn't know this song going in, and hadn't even heard of the artist, but it's a fun little number - if a little unflattering to its subject.

You Got What It Takes - Marv Johnson (peaked at Number 7)

We start with an almost calypso rhythm, played on drums and sax, with a tambourine jangling along. It's a bright, cheery sound, and it's doubled by what sounds like a pennywhistle, too, in a move that makes me think of nothing more than Elias and his Zig-Zag Jive Flutes, a South African kwela band who we heard a full four years ago with Tom Hark. It's an unexpected addition - we haven't really heard any pennywhistle since Tom Hark - but it gives the whole thing a sort of eclectic charm, not least because of the way that the whistles seem to have been recorded from a completely different room? It gives the whole thing a rather chaotic vibe, but not necessarily in a bad way, more like there's some sort of party going on in the background of the track.

And then Marv comes in, with this really distinctive, characterful voice - it's not a resonant, rich voice, but rather a thinner, clearer falsetto, very soulful, but also very laid-back sounding. And the lyrics are really something, too, all about his love don't drive a big fast car / No, you don't look like a movie star / And on your money we won't get far. Yikes. Fortunately, he does then concede that baby, you got what it takes to satisfy / You got what it tajes to set my soul on fire / Oh yeah, you got what it takes for me.

It's cute, I guess, a song about Marv looking past the superficial and loving somebody despite them not being rich, or conventionally attractive. In an era of overblown, cliché love songs, it's refreshing, in a way, and kind of sweet, a real "love is blind" message - you can fall for anyone, even somebody who isn't exactly a supermodel, on a supermodel salary. That said, I do think it feels a bit mean-spiritd at times, especially in the lines later on about how you don't dress in the best of taste, or about how nature didn't give you such a beautiful face, both of which just feel that little bit too specific and targetted. Certianly, if I was the recipient of this song, I think I wouldn't be best impressed - at some point, Marv, you've got to realise that you're digging yourself a hole!

It's a funny one, because I also think that having a man sing this one makes it feel a bit meaner - I could imagine Connie Francis doing a banger version that I wouldn't feel quite as conflicted about. Perhaps it's because of the increased social expectations on women to be attractive and dress well - for better or for worse, calling a woman ugly or badly-dressed feels like more of an insult than it does for a man. That said, it is kind of funny, and at the end of the day, it's a lightweight bit of R&B fluff - I'm not going to read too much into its gender politics. Not least because Marv is just about charming enough to pull it off while still sounding like he's completely besotted with his girl. Also, we got some pennywhistles, which, like I said, really do elevate the track.

Chaotic stuff, and probably not "all time classic" material, but I appreciate the attempt to do something different, lyrically. I also enjoyed the slightly chaotic feel to this one. Plus, it's always nice to get a some proper R&B into in the charts - especially R&B that isn't a ballad. I do still think if I was Marv's girlfriend, he'd be getting an earful. But I'm not, so...
