Humphreys was raised in Bridgeton, NJ, and San Antonio, TX. It was said that the family were of part Mexican Native descent. An apparent trans child who played with dolls, and wore girls’ clothes, Humphreys wanted to do people’s hair. As Rachel she graduated in hair-dressing at a cosmetology school in Bayonne, NJ, (north of Staten Island, across the river from Manhattan).

She was a regular at Max's Kansas City, the hip and glam rock nightclub on Park Avenue South. She also frequented the 82 Club on E 4th St which was in transition from a transvestite performance club to a glam rock and then punk club.  The New York Dolls did their first show there on April 17, 1974, when they performed in drag, except for Johnny Thunders who refused. They were followed by Wayne County (not yet using the name Jayne) and short-lived glitter bands like Teenage Lust and Harlots of 42nd Street.

It was there at this time that Rachel met Lou Reed, the musician. Lou described Rachel in an interview with Bambi magazine:

"It was in a late night club in Greenwich Village. I’d been up for days as usual and everything was at that super-real, glowing stage. I walked in there and there was this amazing person, this incredible head, kind of vibrating out of it all. Rachel was wearing this amazing make-up and dress and was obviously in a different world to anyone else in the place. Eventually I spoke and she came home with me. I rapped for hours and hours, while Rachel just sat there looking at me saying nothing. At the time I was living with a girl, a crazy blonde lady and I kind of wanted us all three to live together but somehow it was too heavy for her. Rachel just stayed on and the girl moved out. Rachel was completely disinterested in who I was and what I did. Nothing could impress her. He’d hardly heard my music and didn’t like it all that much when he did. Rachel knows how to do it for me. No one else ever did before. Rachel’s something else.”

She moved in with him right away. He was then living in a modest one-bedroom apartment at 405 East 63rd Street. Lou had already written a few songs about trans women, and with the single, “Walk on the Wild Side” (which referred to the Andy Warhol-sponsored trans stars, Candy Darling, Holly Woodlawn and Jackie Curtis) had his biggest hit. Rachel was at this time oscillating. Some days she was Ricky, and others he was Rachel. People who knew Lou and Rachel used either pronoun. One journalist referred to Lou’s ‘boyfriend named Rachel’. Both Lou and Rachel enjoyed the confusion and further muddied the water by wearing each other’s clothes. She was street-wise and spunky in a way that Lou only pretended to be. She was said to always carry a knife, and was good in a fight – which proved useful when a concert at the Pallazzo dello Sport in Rome turned into a riot 15 February 1975.

Lou had been working on his fourth solo album, Sally Can’t Dance – the title track and spin-off single assumed to refer to trans woman, Sally Maggio, who was manager at the 220 Club, another trans bar where Lou went drinking. Sally would in the 1980s open Sally’s Hideaway, and then Sally’s II, again a bar for trans persons and with trans performers. However it was Rachel whose image was on the obverse of the Sally Can’t Dance LP sleeve, drawn as if reflected in Lou’s shades.

She supported him on some of his tours. In New York, they lived for a while in the Gramercy Park Hotel, and then an upscale apartment on East 52nd St at FDR Drive where Henry Kissinger, Greta Garbo and John Lennon had lived. In 1975 they began to frequent the rather grimey but seminal punk club, CBGBs. Lou was recording Coney Island Baby, released January 1976 and several tracks refer to Rachel. At the end of the follow-up tour, Rachel was mugged and assaulted. A doctor was called, who inevitably referred to Rachel as ‘she’, even though Lou was saying ‘he’. As Aidan Levy says:

“Rachel had been contemplating gender reassignment surgery, but the transgender rights movement had not yet solidified, and not fully understanding the nature of the decision, Lou was adamantly opposed to any operations, a growing source of conflict in their relationship”.

Despite this, a friend commented: ““I think that Rachel was the glue holding Lou together, or at least keeping him in the public view in many respects … I know that he doted on her. If there was a light shining, it was the two of them together. It doesn’t mean it was the healthiest relationship in the world.” The cover of Walk on the Wild Side: The Best of Lou Reed, 1977 is of photographs of the two of them.

Rachel acted as road-manager on the next tour, managed the money, and watched over the road-crew. They were in London for their third anniversary and ordered a three-tier cake to celebrate, and Lou gave her two diamond rings. He said:

"Rachel knows how to do it for me, no one else before ever did”.

However by the end of 1977, Lou and Rachel were fighting more and more, and frequently it was about the issue of transgender surgery. She had a date for surgery but backed off as Lou said:

“Well why are you doing that? I love you because of the way you are”.

The title track of Street Hassle, 1978, is about her, and an article in Rolling Stone referred to Rachel as the raison d’etre of the album, although in fact it marked the end of their relationship. Lou moved on, having met Sylvia Morales, who became his third wife in 1980.

Reed completely refused to talk about Rachel after 1978. He desisted and decided to go straight. Both his later marriages were with cis women.

Rachel died in 1990 age 37 at St Clare’s Hospital, which specialized in treating AIDS patients, and she was interred in the gigantic pauper burial site on Hart Island off the Bronx coast (which contains over a million corpses).

Lou died in 2013, aged 71, from liver failure.

As an active member of society, Kid Pro has tapped into a higher knowledge that most don't possess. To simply put it, Kid Pro keeps in mind that there's always room for improvement. If he isn't venturing into his own Cons & Pros "The protagonist been laying low/Charging up like a proton." then he's encouraging others to "think global" & to "never get stuck on the locals." (ProZilla)

Bleeding yellow, red & blue — Kid Pro basks into his Columbian heritage with pride.

Even though he's from Parsippany, NJ where the music scene isn't booming, Kid Pro has found a way to make it work. "It’s a big enough town to hold two high schools, but small enough to where everyone pretty much knows or knows of each other."

Asides from being an MC, Kid Pro is an influx of other things.

On the whole he's an producer, engineer & even a father of two who teaches them about life. Yet he also learns more about himself in the process. In a word, KID PRO says it's an enjoyable journey that continues to levitate with time. " My constant pursuit is to be the best version of myself that I can be. I’ve gotten to a point in my life where I can no longer stand by & just do nothing. Any day spent just lounging around is a wasted opportunity to learn a new skill, improve on an old one, read a book, write a new song, etc. I hate that it takes death to appreciate life, but Nipsey’s passing hit me harder than I thought it would because of all the good he was doing outside of music. We were practically the same age & he was able to change & affect so many lives for the better. That continues to speak volumes to me and it’s been one of my sources of inspiration."

The moniker he chose stands for three important elements needed in order to live a prosperous life, "K stands for “Knowledge”, I stands for “Intensity”, & D stands for “Determination." According to the artist, if one wants to become a Pro at anything, these things will get them far. Hence "KID PRO."

If it wasn't for “Midnight Marauders” by A Tribe Called Quest, Kid Pro's love for hip-hop wouldn't be so massive. Still, them along with 9th Wonder & Little Brother have paved the way for his conscious sound.

His music journey started off with poetry in a middle school English class, which then transitioned into rapping in a basement on a $10 USB microphone & posting songs on Soundclick & MySpace.

According to the MC it was just something he thought was cool because he always watched music videos & listened to rap. But over time, it became his passion & therapy. For Kid Pro, making music allows him to express himself in ways that he isn't able to with just speaking. In fact, he can perform those same songs on a stage in front of people & have them relate to what he's saying. "My life was all about music." Kid Pro adds.

Thus far, Kid Pro has been blessed with many opportunities. He's traveled to different open mics/showcases/competitions & always meet new acts that are bringing new energy & rocking new flows that keep him on my toes. To Pro, the new generation of MC’s in that 20-25 year range look the absolute hungriest & impress him with how they’re able to command a huge presence not just on stage, but with social media in order to help push their brand. 

Ultimately, Kid Pro is moved by those that go beyond their boundaries & don’t accept any limitations because the idea of making something out of nothing & presenting it to an audience to help them feel something comes with great joy & a never ending addiction. But his main source of inspiration comes from those he holds dear to his heart: His family.

As he asserts into lyricism, Kid Pro takes into account that music is forever changing. "I would say my strength comes in not being afraid to explore new concepts, flows & beat selection.” Kid Pro adds "You never want to get caught up in recreating what’s hot currently, but being a trendsetter for the next wave. I enjoy every aspect of the writing process. Being able to tell a story over a beat, rhyme & have consistent imagery & metaphors throughout, all while keeping the listener engaged with a melody is not the easiest thing to do. If it’s done right(& marketed right), you can change the world, & that’s what I aim for each time I pick up the pen."

Likewise, Kid Pro's main message to the crowd is to always strive to be the best version of yourself at all times. After all, tomorrow is never promised for anyone & we all have to live life as if we won’t get to see another day. "Before I get off stage at a show, I always recite a small “poem” I wrote randomly a few years back: “Keep Your Eyes Open/Open Your Mind/ Mind Your Business/ Business Before Pleasure/ Pleasure Your Life/ Life Is Good/ Good Night”.... It means a lot to me." he adds.

With this in mind, Kid Pro overcomes all in order to achieve true greatness. He gives those listening a crash-course on how to perceive, act & think about obstacles. He's learned how to deal with the source & never the middle man. And so, he aims to test his limits. Wait until mid-June, Kid Pro will be releasing an upcoming collab EP with @obbeatzz titled “KICKvSNARE” on all streaming platforms along with a solo project which will release in the Fall.

In the meantime, check out his freestyle series called #VersesAboutNothing. In this series he films & edits his own music videos. Kid Pro also showcases his lyrics over classic beats & original beats from producers he's met throughout the years.

P.S: His favorite song to create was Cons & Pros which has two versions! (He even performs it frequently via acapella.) It consists of a rhyme scheme using words that start with “Pro.”

It’s like starting this huge 10,000 piece puzzle: at first it seems impossible, then you start connecting more and more pieces, and before you know it, it’s all coming together flawlessly. The song also has a great message behind it and not just me rhyming a bunch of “Pro” words. I believe in the power of lyrics and always make sure I’m bringing some sort of positivity and knowledge to the listener."

The proper/full name of the soiree was Ova the Rainbow: DreamBoxXx, which is where most of these photos were taken, with a few from Death By Audio Arcade X Dreamhouse I; the photographer on the behalf of Gothamist was there for both opening & closing parties, to help add color to their story...

... BTW, the arcade will open one last time, this Friday (June 8th). Doors open at 7!

Fatboy Wilson and Old Viejo Bones is a new project from acclaimed Brooklyn folk and blues musicians Samoa Wilson and Ernesto Gomez. There self titled debut album features five brand new original songs as well as inventive interpretations of a diverse range of folk and blues songs.

Samoa Wilson is widely regarded as one of the best blues, jazz and folk singers in New York City.  The New York Times calls her singing “sweet, effortless, old-timey” and Nat Hentoff has called her style, “the essence of unaffected musical storytelling.”  Wilson grew up with music in her family, and began singing jug band music, early jazz and blues with her uncle Jim Kweskin at a young age.   Ernesto Gomez, originally from the Union City, NJ has been writing songs and playing blues harmonica and guitar for a number of years with his band the Brotherhood of the Jugband Blues. His influences are broad and include Cuban, Mexican and rap music along side classic blues sources.  Gomez was schooled by the late blues great Carolina Slim and Down Home Radio has called him “an authentic blues man.”

In addition to stellar versions of the classic and obscure blues and folk songs, the album also features five originals by the band.  Gomez’s song, “Black Snake” reflects on his experience on the Standing Rock Sioux Indian reservation in North Dakota, opposing the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.  Wilson’s “Ballad of Luis Reyes” and “Ridgewood Blues” depict her experience of living and working in contemporary New York City.  Her lighthearted song “It Don't Hurt Nobody” asks listeners to live in peace. On The Rise (Premiere): Kev Rodgers Remains Hopeful Through ‘B.A.D. Things’ Project

Kev Rodgers, an upcoming New Jersey rapper and producer, is back with his most impressive project yet. Titled “B.A.D. Things”, the mixtape takes listeners along as Kev Rodgers navigates through the turning points of both his music career and personal life. “B.A.D.” stands for “beauty and depression”, as the projects narrates the ups and downs.

After spending his fair share of time selflessly prioritizing the music of his peers above his own work, he’s ready to focus on his own sound, and has been working to master his craft ever since. He began producing at the age of 14, and his skills behind the boards play a heavy-handed, crucial role in all his projects.

Take us back to that moment you decided to take your own music seriously, focus on your own material and put it at the forefront. What got you to take that step and really commit? That moment was December of 2014. I was in my room questioning myself on what I wanted to do: stick to producing or be an artist. I was working on my project, “King of the Wood” at the time. I caught myself producing a lot of my own songs and it brought out an authenticity that I wasn’t having before. I ended up becoming comfortable as a artist and also grew as a producer.

Describe your creative process behind “B.A.D. Things”. Also, in general, what were some things you did personally to keep the creativity flowing? “B.A.D Things” came along January of 2016 and I recorded the whole album at night. Sometimes I would go to the studio and record myself mumbling the melodies for references or I would just listen to new music that’s not rap for inspiration. Becoming an artist/producer after my first solo show, I started experiencing growing pains in both parts of my life. My connections with certain people started to lose spark and I was becoming more distant. Some of them blamed it on me, some understood my goals. At the same time, I was experiencing some success and getting known by some of my biggest influences for my work for the first time in my career. It became the ultimate high and ultimate low, so “B.A.D” stands for beauty and depression.

How would you describe your sound? My music has an aggression to it while still being soulful. It’s influenced from experimental to trap with neo-soul and gospel.

Which track, verse OR beat are you most proud of (on “B.A.D. Things”) and why? The track I’m most proud of and the beat I’m most proud of are two different answers. The track I love the most is Way Up. I feel as though it describes the album and it’s the start. The song focuses on the progression in music shows and mental approach on life. It’s the ultimate high. My favorite produced record would be Bad 4 Me. Me, Kil Confirmed and Kenif Muse got a chance to collaborate for the first time and it came out beautifully. The sessions were great. Kil Confirmed adding guitar to it was amazing.

Who is your biggest musical inspiration and why? My biggest influences are Kanye West, Travis Scott, 50 Cent, Drake, Michael Jackson and R&B music from the 70’s to the 90’s. Honestly, Kanye West because we’ll focus on what’s best for the record instead of what’s best for the artist.

How important is it to you to rep your city? My town, Collingswood, NJ, means a lot to me for more than just the town, but for the people I met in it. The diversity allowed me to grow and learn different sides of life. My music is a reflection of my environment.

When people hear “Kev Rodgers”, what’s the first thing you hope pops into their minds? In other words, what do you want to be “known as”? “Kev Rodgers” is a template and can be anybody. It’s an artist who reflects on just being human through the ups and downs. I believe Kev Rodgers is a personal and inspirational artist. That’s what I hope to be known as.
