sorry if this has been answered before (i tried looking but tumblr search sucks), but what size canvas do you use?? and what are your brush settings for your lineart brush?? i love how smooth and clean your lines are : 0
hello!💖 i’m so sorry for the extremely late reply but ohhhh i don’t think i’ve answered what canvas size i draw on before and it’s been awhile since i answered an ask my brush settings so i’ll update that too!<3 tbh my uhhh my drawing process isn’t the most straightforward and my brush settings are something i’m still figuring out myself so this might change again later and i want to say there’s probably a more convenient way to go about everything than my approach but i’d be more than happy to answer with my current process just in case!
gonna leave my answer under the read more since i might go off a bit haha
here are my sketch/lineart brush settings on paint tool sai! i happen to use the same brush for both of these drawing stages and for the the brush size i usually switch off between 100 and 120! c:
as for the canvas size i usually draw on, i start off with like maybe an 8x8 page at 300 dpi for my thumbnails and sketches so i don’t draw straight to the final size immediately! for example, if i need to work on an illustration/comic with certain dimensions, i’ll take the final dimension size, use the bucket tool to fill the canvas with a random color, make a selection, and then resize it down to the 8x8 canvas! this personally helps me to sketch something down faster while still keeping in mind what space i can use within the final dimensions rather than me taking a guess! [below the small rectangles were resized from a 5x8 canvas size (the actual size the final piece is going to be drawn on) laid out on an 8x8 canvas)
next, i’ll do my rough sketches on these thumbnails and then when i find i’m happy with the composition layout, i’ll grab my thumbnail sketch to transfer over to the final canvas size and resize it until it fits the whole canvas. once the thumbnail is all sized up, i’ll clean my thumbnail sketch so it has more polish and it’s closer to what the final lineart might look like! (sorry it might be hard to tell bc i didn’t use a different color BG for these sketches to see the edges but on the left is my small thumbnail sketch and the right is my sized up clean sketch!)
and yeah!! i think long story short, i use different canvas sizes at different stages! for my sketch/thumbnails, i prefer to draw smaller and then when it comes to clean sketch/final lineart i draw on the final dimensions which are usually set for print! it varies between projects, for example, the final dimensions of my saiou dog comic was 5x8 inches but if another project for let’s say a zine illustration has a template for 8.5 x 11, then i’ll work on that size for my final lineart! c:
but waaa sorry i really went off and if this doesn’t really make much sense, when i draw i usually feel scattered and tend to go back and forth a lot until i come up with something i’m happy with but please feel free to let me know if there’s anything you might want clarification on and i’ll do my best to answer! thanks again for asking and it means a lot that you enjoy my lineart! hope this helps even a little<3
