content warning- this information will contain discussion of a gang rape case but no photos or detailed descriptions or anything. No one should feel ashamed for having to avoid reading things like this, a couple of years ago I would absolutely not have been in a place where I could read it. I try to tag everything accordingly so you can avoid it if necessary. I post news reports like this here to show the reality for Korean women juxtaposed with the news of the ridiculous ideological witch hunts from men that companies treat like gospel. You need to have an understanding of the full reality for women living there. this is why I would hesitate to refer to the situation as a “gender war” many of you may have seen youtube “video esssayists” call it, especially the ones that try to relate it to its affect on gacha games, the niche subject this blog was made to report on. when you start to learn information like this you may agree with my thoughts of calling it something more like misogynistic terrorism…

"반가워용~ etc" was so sweet and funny :) i've had some shitty experiences with korean men and I'm literally not the same person since the whole soranet/illegal cam came to surface but even I can understand how everyone have been/are victims of the state. I still feel hopeful for korea because looking back, it has always changed for the better (though it feels slow). so it's realllly tiring to see non-koreans be racist/cynical (kpop fans too lol) if all they know comes from twitter threads. xx
i'm so sorry that happened to you, i can't even imagine how that messes with physical and emotional safety/wellbeing. a lot of my formative painful experiences were with korean men as well, and it took me so much work and learning to gain a political framework where they are also my people that i want to see freed. koreans as a whole are such a maligned unrecognized people just historically and this stuff is the same, people with a stake in the empire punishing the colonized for replicating colonial violence to each other. also a lot of complete lies and willful ignorance. it is tiring, but it's also really nothing new.

"Overflowing 'OO University Rooms,' What is the Ministry of Education Doing?… 'Universities are a Platform for Deepfake Sex Crimes"
Call for Comprehensive Sex Education and Victim Protection Measures
Deepfake Sex Crimes Confirmed at Over 70 Universities Nationwide Students Demand a Full Investigation into On-Campus Deepfake Sex Crimes
published oct 18 2024
this article is originally in Korean and has been mtl and edited into English here. it’s not going to be 1:1 but the basic info should be there, if you see any discrepancies though lmk and I’ll edit it asap. thanks everyone for your continued help and understanding.
On the morning of the 18th, at Gwanghwamun Square in Jongno-gu, Seoul, a press conference organized by the "Deepfake Sex Crime OUT University Student Joint Action" was held. Participants called on the Ministry of Education to establish prevention and response systems for deepfake sex crimes on university campuses. Holding signs and banners, they urged for action despite the rainy weather.
Since the discovery of a deepfake sex crime incident at Seoul National University in May, the existence of "OO University Rooms" at over 70 universities nationwide has made the issue a hot topic in society. University students gathered to criticize the pervasive rape culture in Korean society and demanded that the Ministry of Education and university authorities take measures against deepfake sex crimes.
"Conduct a Survey of Victims of Deepfake Crimes at Each University" "Strengthen Support for Comprehensive Sex Education"
Despite the rainy weather, about 30 students gathered at Gwanghwamun Square on the morning of the 18th to voice their concerns towards the Ministry of Education and university authorities.
Kang Na-yeon, an operational committee member of the Seoul Women's Association's Feminist Student Union Club, stated, "Universities are one of the platforms where deepfake sex crimes occur," and emphasized, "Students at these universities have become content that perpetrators of deepfake sex crimes enjoy simply because they attend these schools."
An image from the "Deepfake Map" showed the locations of schools where illegal synthetic materials (deepfakes) were found, marked with red arrows.
She continued, "Students have turned around to sign petitions when they heard the term 'deepfake' while walking down the street," and added, "Young university students know well how deepfake sex crimes shake the foundation of trust in society, and how bleak the present and future are in a society that does not view those around them as equal fellow citizens."
The "Deepfake Sex Crime OUT University Student Joint Action," the group hosting the event, had previously gathered signatures from 1,108 young university students condemning the Ministry of Education for neglecting deepfake sex crimes.
There was also criticism that deepfake sexual exploitation stems from the entrenched rape culture in Korean society. A member of the feminist editorial committee at Korea University, identified as A, pointed out, "Digital sex crimes have flourished for nearly 30 years, nurtured by a culture of rape and fueled by indifference."
She noted, "In the 1990s, there were youth exploitation videos, in the 2000s, websites like Soranet, in the 2010s, incidents of harassment in group chat rooms and the Burning Sun scandal, in the 2020s, the Nth room sex crime involving webhard cartels, and in 2024, deepfake sex crimes that have claimed the lives of many women."
At the press conference held on the morning of the 18th at Gwanghwamun Square, participants held signs and banners urging the Ministry of Education to establish prevention and response measures for deepfake sex crimes on university campuses.
Lee Mi-geon, head of the Mirror Regional University Human Rights Union Club, said, "Universities are establishing advanced technology departments such as artificial intelligence and semiconductor departments or including coding as a required general education course for non-science and engineering students," criticizing, "There is technological innovation, but no ethical responsibility."
She further called for the Ministry of Education to "establish measures for protecting and supporting victims on campus and conduct investigations on victims and a comprehensive survey of deepfake sex crimes at universities."
Since the "Nth Room Sexual Exploitation Case" in 2019, the government has made it legally mandatory for university staff and students to receive sexual violence prevention education, but only about half have actually completed the training. According to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the completion rates for university students were 49.7% in 2019, 46.5% in 2020, 53% in 2021, and 55.1% in 2022, barely exceeding half.
In a performance that followed, participants revealed the harsh realities of universities, including the irresponsibility of the Ministry of Education, inadequate gender equality education systems, and depoliticization. They expressed their determination to hold the Ministry accountable and to create a gender-equal and safe university campus despite the gender-based violence on campuses.
They urged the Ministry of Education to:
△Conduct a comprehensive survey of victims and deepfake sex crimes on campuses
△Establish measures to protect and support victims on university campuses
△Expand the budget and professional staff for university human rights centers
△Strengthen support for comprehensive sex education, and the group called on the Ministry to take responsibility for addressing the issue of deepfake sex crimes.

I saw on Twitter that a Korean feminist from WOMAD was arrested, is this true?!
Is she arrested??? I only saw that the authority issued an arrest warrant. This is so sick. We've been calling on police to shut down Ilbe and Soranet for almost 10 years. And women shows slightest hate to men, they shut down the whole site?? National backlash at its best, I guess.

Intimacy - blog 9 Hobbs, Owen, and Gerber
Hobbs, Owen, and Gerber disagree with Bauman’s argument that ‘digital dating and hook-up applications’ accompanied with individualisation has resulted in a ‘liquefied’ form (fragile, weak bonds that can be easily reshaped) of love and relationships. Instead, the authors argue that these platforms act as a tool for the pursuit of a meaningful, long-term relationship. However, I propose that though both these authors points are valid, as with any technology there are both pros and cons, what is more important to look at is more than insular level, individual issues, but how the dilution of the meaning of love, sex and intimacy has resulted in complex, societal wide problems, such as human trafficking and digital sex crimes. I argue this on the basis that the affordances of technology, internet and apps has further facilitated this dilution and distorted view of love, sex and intimacy.
From this angle, I will now bring in some examples that highlight the culture of diluted and distorted view of sex, intimacy and low, and explain how the internet has facilitated that.
One trend we can observe is that the internet has increased the ease of finding hook-ups, one-night stands and casual relationships. Looking at Singapore alone, from personal experiences, the internet has facilitated a new behaviour of this generation, where it is the norm to sleep around and cheat on their partners.
One might think that this is just an individual problem and only affects the involved parties, however, I would like to shift our attention to the fact that this is the first step in the loss of value towards marriage and love, which leads to a cycle of diluted ideals, which results in a whole series of issues that impacts the entire society, such as the telegram sex crime scandal in South Korea.
As Sue-Jung Lee, a criminal psychologist at Kyonggi University says “This kind of distorted sexual culture is becoming the norm". (Shafrir & Darcy, 2018).
Recently in South Korea, there has been a highlight and crackdown on digital sex crimes, exposing societal breakdowns and marginalisation of a class of society. In early 2018, the #MeToo movement took root in Korea, a protest against the issue of cyber voyeurism varying from recordings of women urinating to sexual acts secretly videotaped by someone's boyfriend and released later as "revenge porn” on websites such as Soranet (Kwon, 2019).
Other cyber-sex crimes continued to surface such as the “Nth Room”, “Guru Room” incidences, triggering public outrage. These rooms acted as illegal encrypted telegram group chats, sharing explicit pictures and images of women and young girls. Victims were recruited by offering them part-time modelling jobs, and eventually coerced them into making pornographic material by threatening to spread their personal information and images. They recruited members by luring them with teaser videos and promised exclusive rooms with access to women and girls, which Cho (the founder) calls slaves as they could instruct them to create sexually explicit material. Buyers would pay $1200-$3000+ USD with bitcoin to enter these rooms, and more expensive rooms had “more beautiful” females.
According to authorities, there were over 100 victims, including 26 teen girls.
These cybercrimes tend to occur in a fashion such as Ji-o’s (not her real name) case. Korean teenager Ji-o was threatened, stalked, and pressured into taking sexually explicit photos of herself by men on the internet, which started at the age of 11 and lasted for three years. According to Choi Yunu, from a non-governmental Mental Health organization in Korea, Ji-o joined Twitter hoping to make friends, and she found a way to make money just by sharing pictures of her breasts (Seo & Hollingsworth, 2021). This was how online criminals tricked many young girls and then used these as blackmail materials. Ji-o encountered a few different criminals, one of which threatened to tell her father what she was doing if she did not take explicit pictures for him. Another set a rule that she must respond to his messages within two minutes or he would send men to beat her up. She was terrified and would sleep with earphones to hear the notification. Once, she refused the former man and he spread private details of her online, which she does not know how he got hold of (Seo & Hollingsworth, 2021).
To conclude, this scandal highlights how the meaning of intimacy and sex has been radicalised, enabled through the development of the internet and technology. Now the problem is no longer confined on an insular level but has risen to a new level where society is affected, and marginalisation of people group increases.

Oh!!! MY GOD!! Our government asked for cooperation from the tumbler headquarters but was rejected. News part!! "In the parliamentary audit session held in October last year, punitive punishment for foreign Internet sites such as tumblers and other foreign websites was on the rise. However, Tumber said, ” Tumbler does not exist in Korea, but the South Korean government rejected the request. “ So anyway Our government could not investigate child sex crimes without the cooperation of tumblers. ‘Spycam’ epidemic seizes South Korea’s women | News
South Korea is within the grip of a “spycam” epidemic with covert footage of intercourse, nudity, and urination posted on-line in what quantities to a “social loss of life penalty” for 1000’s of feminine victims.
The footage could also be taken surreptitiously by boyfriends or captured on covert units as small as automobile keys. Day by day digicam checks at the moment are a part of life for cleaners in lots of public bogs.
The spy digicam phenomenon has reached such epidemic proportions in tech-savvy South Korea that tens of 1000’s of ladies have taken to the streets to march for motion.
Beneath hearth for transferring too slowly, the federal government enacted a slew of measures, together with the formation of a taskforce to assist victims and elevated inspections in dangerous public locations.
In April, the 16-member process pressure launched a free service to assist victims take away illicitly filmed footage from the web – the workforce has been inundated. Up to now, it has dealt with some 15,000 requests to take away footage and counselled three,000-plus victims.
“The state of affairs is getting out of hand,” mentioned Ryu Hye-jin from the government-backed Ladies’s Human Rights Institute of Korea, which oversees the taskforce. “Because the institution of the duty pressure, many victims have known as and reached out to us.”
‘Social loss of life’
Perpetrators sometimes use tiny units that may simply movie girls in public locations, akin to bogs or altering rooms, and later promote the footage to pornography websites for revenue.
The footage reveals girls undressing or having intercourse and may be bought for as much as 100,000 received ($90).
In lots of instances, the filming is finished by companions – with or with out consent – at properties or in accommodations, and later used as a type of revenge if the connection turns bitter.
“It sends the victims into melancholy as a result of there isn’t a finish to it. It’s on the web endlessly. It is a social loss of life penalty,” mentioned Ryu.
Ladies who fall victims to the hidden digicam have beforehand turned to “digital laundries”, non-public companies that take away the movies for a payment, giving rise to a profitable, new business. Nonetheless, the brand new process pressure now affords the identical companies without spending a dime, and has taken over the majority of such work.
The variety of spycam instances jumped to just about 6,500 in 2017, from about 2,400 in 2012, in response to Yonhap information company.
Campaigner Park Soo-yeon mentioned many victims weren’t even conscious they had been the topic of such movies, and had been reluctant to talk out after they did discover out, cowed by social stigma.
“These are the people who find themselves attempting to cover themselves as a lot as doable,” Park, who at all times carries a hidden digicam detector, mentioned at her workplace within the suburbs of the capital Seoul.
A fierce authorities critic, the 22-year-old activist based the group Digital Sexual Crime Out in 2015 and was credited with bringing down a infamous porn web site, Soranet, in 2016.
The illicit web site, arrange in 1999 and which had claimed greater than 1,000,000 customers, had hosted 1000’s of movies of ladies that had been filmed with out their consent.
“What we have to inform folks is that it is a crime, that is sexual violence, this isn’t porn,” mentioned Park, who known as for the gross sales of hidden cameras to be tightened and controlled.
By no means gone
It’s nearly unimaginable to wipe all on-line traces of illicit pictures.
“These web sites are all around the world and each nation has totally different legal guidelines. It’s actually onerous to get to some extent the place we will punish all of the perpetrators,” mentioned Track Eugene, a counsellor on the taskforce.
She mentioned it has been troublesome for victims to talk up in regards to the subject in South Korea, the place discussions about girls’s rights are nonetheless generally seen as taboo in a male-dominated society.
“It is essential for girls to talk up in regards to the subject to create consciousness in regards to the ache that has been inflicted.”
Ryu mentioned there was no strategy to cease such crimes as long as girls had been routinely seen as intercourse objects. “What we’d like is to vary the way in which our society treats our girls,” she mentioned.

3331 Arts Chiyoda
(*Media Today “http://www.mediatoday.co.kr/?mod=news&act=articleView&idxno=130092”) @
彼らの活動は、多くの場合、DIY(Do it yourself.
(* image from “https://tumblbug.com/mersgall4”)

Introducing Korean feminist movements to Japanese art audience at Girls Power Cafe
@ Tomorrow Girls Troop’s installation at 3331 Arts Chiyoda
This is Myeongsoon Kim, a Korean member of Tomorrow Girls Troop (TGT). I visited Tokyo last week to attend the Socially Engaged Art (SEA) exhibition held at 3331 Arts Chiyoda from Feb.18 to Mar. 5, 2017. In the show, TGT’s recent works were presented along the renowned artists including Ai Weiwei, Pedro Reyes and Susan Lacy.
TGT had two pieces in the show. The first one is their new project, <Believe> campaign, which pushes Japanese government to revise the hundred-year old law regarding sexual assault. Coming from the old era, the current law is favorable to offenders. The second work is a site-specific project, Girls Power Cafe (GP Cafe) in the exhibition hall that resembles a feminist study room or an information booth, displaying a table of feminist books and zines, TGT designed feminist t-shirts,... etc.
During the exhibition hours, one of the TGT members sat on the Cafe table to engage the audience. This time during my visit, I had an opportunity to introduce the recent feminist movements in Korea at GP Cafe on the 25th. My presentation was followed by another talk about Chinese feminist art by our member Qiqi. In the below, I will briefly introduce the recent movements in Korean feminism based on the presentation I gave in GP Cafe.
@ Myeongsoon Kim giving a short presentation at Girls Power Cafe about the recent feminist movements in Korea.
Feminist movements rapidly spread out in Korea from the end of 2014, gaining massive attention. It was induced by the long-lived misogyny of the internet culture in Korea, yet triggered by an accidental event. In May 2015, there was a news broadcast that two Korean women caused the MERS epidemic in the country by refusing doctor’s advice. Netizens accused entire Korean women for being ignorant and selfish, which was based on the long tradition of insulting women on the internet. Few days later, it turned out to be a wrong broadcast, but women did not tolerate this time. Feminist actions had been spreading on the internet, such as hashtag movements on twitter (#IamFeminist) from 2014, however, it was the MERS epidemic that brought together large number of women in solidarity. These anonymous group of women came together as Megalians. The group, Megalia, which borrows its name from MERS epidemic and the Norwegian novel Egalia’s Daughters, gained a huge attention for mirroring the way how Korean men treated women online. For example, they made fun of the men’s small penises as a counterpunch for being complaint about small breasts. The feminist movements in Korea have gained broad attention, became active and popular since then. Megalia’s activities went beyond teasing men online, engaging in many social activities. For example, they played a huge role in closing down the porn website, Soranet, which was a hotbed of crime as a platform for sharing sex videos taken from hidden cameras.
@ A subway advertisement by Megalia. It reads, “Do not take pictures with a hidden camera”
Nevertheless, Megalia has faded out from feminism scene since the winter of 2015 due to an internal conflict. Among Megalians, some feminists actively positioned themselves as man-haters insisting to exclude queer issues from their interests. The others who did not agree to the argument, separated from the group. Megalia stopped being active since then, but I think it played a role of an ignition point for the current feminist movements in Korea.

Another incident that brought wide attention to feminism was a murder crime in May 2016, at the public restroom near Gangnam station. 23-year old woman was brutally murdered by a schizophrenic man, who waited for a woman to enter the restroom after letting go six men. He said the reason he killed the woman was because “women ignored him”. It was an obvious hate crime, yet the court announced it was not, because the criminal was a mentally ill person. Numerous women identified themselves to the female victim, reflecting on their lives in Korean society as young women. Many people left condolence post-it messages to the victim at Gangnam station exit 10.
One of the active feminist groups formed around this time was Femidangdang, who executed a ‘mirror action’, marching on the street with mirrors. These mirrors were in the form of a portrait picture of the deceased, implying that any person (woman) could have been in the position of victim. A member of this group joined our conversation at GP Cafe on the 24th introducing the group’s activities. The ultimate goal of Femidangdang is to establish the first feminist political party in Korea.

@ ‘Femi-zone’ at the massive protest for president Park’s impeachment in Dec.2016, initiated by Femidangdang.
Femidangdang and couple other feminist organizations came together to create a misogyny-free protest zone, where people can avoid unpleasant encounter to sexist comments or actions. The misogyny within protests has been stressful dilemma for feminists, which you can easily run into at massive protests in Korea (ex. sexual harassment towards young women, protesters yelling sexist comments, etc).
Including Femidangdang, many of the recent feminist movements in Korea are initiated by young women. Their activities are often based on the internet involving DIY activities. Last year, numerous feminist goods and zines were produced and distributed. I introduced variety of these activities at GP Cafe by showing examples of books and goods that I brought from Korea.

@ Megalia’s Facebook(FB) Korea lawsuit project in June, 2016 was one of the largest funded feminist projects on Tumblebug, the biggest crowdfunding website in Korea. Most DIY feminist activities had been crowdfunded by this platform, Tumblebug (cf. Kickstarter). Megalia’s FB page was closed down multiple times by FB Korea due to “offensive contents”, while a FB page run by misogynists, “Kimchi Women” displaying even worse contents, was never put into trouble. Megalia FB page proposed an online crowdfunding to file a lawsuit against FB Korea for their unfair actions. The t-shirts in the above image were produced as rewards for funders. This project has gained a lots of attention and collected around 1500% of the initial goal, reaching approx. 116,000 USD. However, the project was put into controversy, because Megalians were received as man haters, but not “proper feminists”. For example, a voice actor of a game company was fired from her work after uploading her selfie on Instagram putting on this t-shirt. The company was afraid that her t-shirt would offend their male customers. This affair brought a large conflict between some feminists and the general public who were against Megalia.
@ Feminist goods designed by Bozziparty (i.e pussy party) (https://twitter.com/bozzyparty)
Bozziparty is one of the creative initiators of feminist goods, who started their activities in 2014. They made t-shirts, pussy shaped bread, and pussy coloring book.
@ Aladdin online book store also joined the trend of feminist goods in 2016 Feb. They gave out feminist themed mug cups for customers who purchased feminist theme books over 20 USD.
The two books below written by a young feminist writer, Minkyung Lee, are my favorite feminist DIY projects among all. They were initially self-published by Tumblebug crowd-funding, but currently sold in major bookstores as they gained huge popularity.
@ A hands-on manual for having conversations about feminism. (2016.7)
The above is an image from the crowdfunding website Tumblebug, which shows the book and following rewards. This book gives you advices on how to deal with endless questions and arguments by people who don’t understand feminism. According to the book, the most important thing to remember is that you don’t have to be engaged in every conversation! The writer says, if the person is not willing to listen, you should rather save up your energy. It also provides you couple of predictable scenarios and how to deal with them.
@ Korean feminist history workbook. (2016.9)
Created in the form of a workbook, this educational book includes a brief history of Korean feminism. It emphasize the importance of recording, remembering and celebrating past struggles to bring changes in society. Thus, the book is created to celebrate the often forgotten/belittled feminist achievements. It was accompanied by a calendar that has illustrations of Korean historical feminists in the image below.

@ Zuzn (*means ‘wet’ in Korean) magazine claims to be an ‘alternative porn magazine’ made by women. (http://zuznshop.co.kr) (2014~)
The pictures below are taken by me at feminist goods pop-up store, which took place at Sunshine bookstore from December 2016 to January 2017. Sunshine bookstore is a queer independent bookstore, which is sometimes utilized as an event space.
Coming from my personal observation, the story narrated above and given examples are not based on a thorough academic research. They may not include all the important feminist activities happened in Korea, yet I believe they still provide a rough picture of the recent atmosphere and movements here.
I hope you enjoyed my report. It was a great honor to share my research at GP Cafe. I am happy to see the growing interest in feminism in Japan, and look forward to the change in our societies.
