If you thought replacing/upgrading a PS4 HDD was easy, you'd be wrong.

After hours of fighting with it, I am depressed and defeated.

As I mention in the video, a few weeks ago the PS4 was acting a bit funny, and I've noticed some corruption in its video recordings from time to time, so I figure the HDD is on its way out. I bought a Crucial MX500 to replace it with. Came highly rated, there are guides out there about how amazing and easy it is to swap out the old platter HDD for this new SSD. Even Sony's official guide is pretty straight forward: back up your current data, take old HDD out, put new HDD in, reinstall the system OS, restore personal data.

I fought with it for hours, got it to work one time, and when I went to restore my backup saves/account data, it crashed and seemingly bricked the HDD because it refuses to work a second time.

Is the HDD bad? It's not impossible they just sent me a defective unit.

Is the SD card containing the OS bad? It's only 1-2 years old and has only ever been used maybe twice. It is, however, exFAT, and Sony's install guide says you should be using FAT32. The fact that it seems to work when prompted leads me to believe it's fine, it's just getting to that prompt.

Is it the PS4's fault? I think there might be a short in one of the USB ports because when I first got it, I was testing out the media player by watching a video from a flash drive. In the middle of playback, the PS4 dumped me back to the dashboard and from that point onwards refused to see the flash drive. Pulling the drive out, it was almost too hot to touch. From that day onwards, that specific USB port refused to accept any flash drives (though it still works with controllers, and once the flash drive cooled off it has remained functional).

That being said, the PS4 has three USB ports. Surely I could just use one of the other ones, right? Sure, if I could reliably get the damn thing to boot into Safe Mode. I don't know why, 9 times out of 10, it won't. And even when I get it to boot into Safe Mode, another 9 times out of 10 it won't read the install file on the USB.

I'm at a loss. I have no ideas on what's wrong or where the problem can be solved.

Dude we don't have Amazon here... Or well I can order from Amazon if I REALLY want to pay an insane amount of shipping for them to use a private courier company and send it to me via Germany. But at that point it's not even Amazon any more. We don't have direct access to Amazon. We also don't get the Alexa here.

We do have Starbucks but by that I mean there is 2 in the city of Joburg and one is in the international lounge at the airport. And I think there's maybe 2 in Cape Town but that is IT.

In some cases it fucking sucks. When I needed to get me PS4 repaired I had to get an IT guy to help me because all the Sony representatives have left the country as we're no longer considered profitable to them.

We also don't have any form of public transport at all which considering the majority of the country don't have a car is... a problem.

But that's a different matter.

But yeah, a LOT of really massive American things just aren't here. No Amazon, no Wallmart (or Target or any of these big warehouse megastores) basically no Starbucks, No Taco Bell, no Subway, uh.... what else....

We do have a LOT of KFC because it's very popular here, and we have a lot of McDonalds because it's cheap food. We do have Burger King but they're not very common. (My nearest one is a 40 minute drive away).

PS5 has stopped reading discs. What should I do?

PS5 has stopped reading discs. What should I do? A few days ago, my PS5 (original model) stopped reading any game discs. Both PS4 and PS5 have stopped working. Whenever I put a disc in, it spends a while reading it before giving me an “unreadable disc” notification. My discs are not broken and I currently don’t have the equipment on hand needed to clean out the disc tray, but anything I’ve seen also implies it’s a software issue. I have reset my PS5, restarted it from safe mode, and rebuild the database from safe mode. Right now, I just turned it off, unplugged everything, and am waiting a few hours before trying again.One thing I have not tried is going into safe mode, going to “clear cache and rebuild database” and selecting “clear system cache” just because those words scare me. Is this a possible way to fix this issue considering what I’ve already done, and what does clearing the system cache actually do? I assume it’s not going to erase all my accounts and progress (that’s another option in a different menu), but I’d just like outside confirmation that it won’t before I try it.If this does not work, my current plan is to bring it into a local game store and seeing if they have someone to repair it there (I know it’s a service they had, but last time I checked in 2021, they were down their technician due to the pandemic) but don’t know what to do if that doesn’t work out.A substantial part of my PS5 collection is physical. It’s how I prefer to buy new games when I have the option. If these options don’t work, is there anything else I can do? Is this an error born out of a recent PS5 update and is Sony likely to address it in a future update? Or am I better off just selling my physical games since I can’t afford a new PS5 even if I trade in my current one and rebuilding my library over time through digital only or when I can afford a new PS5? Nintendo Just Had A Record-Breaking Quarter Thanks To Tears Of The Kingdom

Nintendo just had one of its best first quarters since the launch of the Switch in 2017, thanks in part to sales of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The company’s latest financial report reveals that Tears of the Kingdom sold 18.51 million units from its release to June 30. This led to Nintendo having the highest “global sell-through of first-party” for a first quarter since the launch of the Switch. It says sales of Tears of the Kingdom also drove hardware sales, as Nintendo sold 3.91 million units in this quarter, which ran from April 1 to June 30, 2023.

US game revenue sees a 9% jump in June

During June, US consumer spending on games hit $4.7 billion, a 9% increase year-over-year, according to the newest Circana data.

Software reached $4 billion during the month, as the segment was up 7% compared to last year's performance.

Consumer spending on gaming hardware saw a 22% year-on-year bump as it amassed $454 million. Circana said, "This is the highest video game hardware spend for a June month since the $617 million reached in June 2008."

Sony's PlayStation 5 console was the top-selling system for unit and dollar sales during June. The report adds that the system remains in the lead units and dollar sales performance for the 2023 hardware market.

I saw you say on deviantart that the ‘marvel spider man’ series is only on PlayStation because Sony own spider man movie rights. That not truth. Marvel actually approach Microsoft to make a marvel game for Xbox! Microsoft say no, so marvel went Sony instead. wretchposting and awake too late, but man trying to get proficient w/ my arcade stick is endlessly disheartening. I keep wearing out my arm in 5 minutes and seeing my inputs disintegrate. Over a month of practicing on it; nowhere near able to play the game with it.

Constantly something like Sony's substandard thermal paste in the PS4 or their fragile D-Pad and lacking repairability in the Dualshock 4 (leading to arcade stick...) is screwing me over. From tekken moves that become unreactable online to input lag on my TV making it unsuitable for playing games.

My headphones broke again last week and are not fixed yet. I think probably the best thing technology does is break. At my most unhappy I think of people as akin to that, stuck in the same patterns, thinking staticky or cracked in key places, trash and more trash.

When tragedies happen I shrug, but to forgive things that are simply faulty is beyond me. everything is faulty, though! most things seem poorly made. how do people tolerate it?
