#sometimes the protagonist of a queer historical romance has no self esteem and isn't even self-aware about it#and THEN they're also really dumb and don't understand basic logic OR genre conventions#and you're like. well. maybe you should feel bad about yourself. but maybe not that bad#like man this author needs a therapist#but sometimes you've already read the queer historical fictions that fit your genre and tone needs#and definitely all the qhr's#and sometimes this book was actually a rec by one of your top favorite writers#and you're like. really?? you?? with your emotional intelligence and slick plotting?? enjoyed?? this??#like i have a high tolerance for protagonist bs i'm also dumb and full of insecurity#but i might have to stop reading if the protag doesn't show signs of growth#(or at least they shouldn't be always self-flagellating while kissing the ground the love interest walks on)#(that dynamic is not appealing—esp when played entirely straight and with the endgame pair rather than as a learning experience)#tag rants
