Suspected NPA rebel nabbed in NegOcc
#PHnews: Suspected NPA rebel nabbed in NegOcc
BACOLOD CITY – A suspected member of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) was arrested in joint police and military operation in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental on Monday afternoon.
A police report on Tuesday identified the suspect as Warren Lozano, 26, a resident of the southern Negros city’s Sitio Cantupa in Barangay Caradioan.
Lozano, alleged to be a part of NPA hit squad Special Partisan Unit or SPARU, belongs to the Sentro De Grabidad 3, Regional Strike Force of Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros-Cebu-Bohol-Siquijor.
Around 4:55 p.m., Lozano was cornered by personnel of Himamaylan City Police Station and 94th Infantry Battalion (94IB) of the Philippine Army in the neighboring Sitio Ubay.
Lt. Col. Angelo de Guzman, 94IB commander, said Lozano is an active member of the NPA although they have yet to confirm his links with the SPARU.
The suspect was found in possession of a caliber .45 caliber Colt pistol loaded with six live cartridges and a black sock containing two cartridges for an M203 grenade launcher.
The police report said Lozano “failed to present legal documents for the lawful possession of firearm and explosives” and was detained in the station’s custodial facility.
In a radio interview, Maj. Romeo Vargas, acting police chief of Himamaylan, said Lozano denied being a member of the CPP-NPA and claimed that the firearms and explosives recovered from his possession were planted.
The suspect will be charged with violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act and Republic Act 9516 or illegal possession and manufacture of explosives.
The CPP-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. (PNA)

1-Bromodecane As Your Siding Contractor
1-Bromodecane As Your Siding Contractor
1-bromodecane is a bromine styrenate hydroxy compound used as an oxidizing agent in the manufacture of paper. It is also used to make paper towels and napkins hard enough to withstand many years of daily use. The compound is also used in paper manufacturing as a stabilizer. Most paper is 1-bromodecane; paperboard, ink-jetting toner, furniture adhesive, and printer toner are some examples of paper that contains bromodecane. It was introduced in the market in the late 1960s, and at that time it was known as Bromex and Bromodecane.
In its natural state, bromodecane is stable without oxidizing agents. It becomes unstable when exposed to oxygen or when exposed to air. It will degrade over a period of time; therefore, it must be protected from oxygen. Paper that contains bromodecane, like bond paper, paperboard, and thermal paper, has to be stored in an area with low or no oxygen. This is because direct sunlight can cause the colors in the paper to fade.
As mentioned earlier, demand in the market is projected to increase because people find it convenient to use. The use of this bromodecane is mostly for paper production and to make napkins hard enough to withstand the activities in the kitchen. Paperboard is mainly used to absorb oil and other solid wastes produced by cooking. Because of these, paperboard market is expected to grow in the future.
There are other paper products that contain 1- bromodecane. For instance, pillowcases, disposable towels, and disposable cups have been manufactured using it. Some manufacturers even use it to make tissues, socks, and disposable diapers. Because of these, we can expect to see a lot more bromodecane in the market. Although it has many uses, it is still being controlled meticulously by various chemical industries in order to avoid pollution.
Bromodecane was first made available for consumers in the year 1970. It was first used as a filler in a variety of paper products including folders, booklets, and advertisements. After this, the demand for bromodecane grew. Several companies started producing and distributing it. It became popular because it's cheap and can be found in abundance in nature. That is why, you can find bromodecane in real, natural sources which makes it a renewable source.
The popularity of bromodecane market research report spread worldwide. It is being used in various paperboard products. Paperboard is a great source of packaging, although, its natural sources may no longer be sufficient.
Paperboard was being widely used until the late 1980s when its production was becoming more expensive. It was then banned in several countries including the United Kingdom. However, recent reports showed that its production is starting to rise again. It is now cheaper and is available at a better price than its older counterparts. Moreover, it has become environmentally-friendly and can also be recycled into other products like foam.
You might not have heard about 1-bromodecane, but you have probably used it before. It is still in use in paperboard and other similar products. Its uses are numerous and can be used for different purposes. But because of its usefulness, 1-bromodecane should be protected from misuse. It is now finally getting the attention it deserves from the paperboard manufacturing industry.
Its main properties include being flame retardant, biodegradable and recyclable. These are the reasons why a lot of companies are now starting to use it. It has been producing products which are more hygienic and safer for the environment.
With this chemical, they are not releasing any hazardous emissions. It also keeps the color of the paperboard bright even after it gets exposed to fire or other elements. You don't have to worry about it staining your paperboard because it won't fade when it is constantly exposed to heat or sunlight. Also, when you expose it to water or moisture, you won't have to worry of it being ruined because the material it is made from is able to withstand high temperatures. And if you are looking for an environmentally-friendly packaging option for your papers, you should definitely go for this one.
So if you are going to use 1-bromodecane as your paperboard siding contractor in the future, you can be sure that you will never run into any problems with it. This chemical doesn't produce any harmful emissions and it also has no effect on the color of the paperboard. So what are you waiting for?

How to Start Your Own E-Commerce Business in the Philippines
If you want to become an entrepreneur, starting your own e-commerce business in the Philippines is a great idea and gives you several unique advantages:
It is an inexpensive way to start a business.
Low maintenance costs.
Easier to market and promote products and services.
Business is open 24/7.
Wider scope and reach.
So what are you waiting for, let’s get your e-commerce business in the Philippines started!
1. What is Your Business Idea?
In the Philippines, the top selling e-commerce items are ranked in order of sales:
Electronic Goods
Special Interest
Fashion Apparel
Furniture and Home Appliances
Food, Cosmetics, and Pharmaceuticals
Punchdrunk Panda is an example of a successful e-commerce business. The company sells Filipino-made products which include fashion accessories, bags, socks, headphones, camera straps, wallets, and pencil cases. According to them, they started with a free trial first to build their online store using Shopify and was amazed by how idiot proof or user-friendly it is.
Nonetheless, once you’ve determined the products and services you want to offer on your e-commerce website, the next step is to look for suppliers.
2. Register Your Online Business
If your e-commerce business exchanges goods and services for cash, then it will be considered a source of income. You will be required to issue official receipts. This means you have to register your online business.
If your type of business is either a proprietorship or partnership, then you should register it with the Department of Trade and Industry or DTI. If you plan to set up a corporation, you have to register it with the Securities and Exchange Commission or SEC.
Related:
5 Essential Business Permits and Licenses in the Philippines
The advantage of being a registered entity is that it will be easier to gain approval and favorable terms from suppliers. In order to find the best suppliers, you have to go straight to the manufacturer and secure a referral.
Manufacturers will be more receptive to legally organized and registered businesses than those that aren’t.
3. Build Your E-Commerce Website
Your e-commerce website is your bread and butter. Although there are programs that can help you set up your own e-commerce website, it is always better to sign up the services of a professional web designer.
One of the best e-commerce platforms to use is Shopify. Punchdrunk Panda shifted to Shopify because it is user-friendly, offers outstanding support services, comes with many interesting features, and offers risk-free 30 days trial.
It’s not enough to just have an e-commerce website. It should have the following qualities:
Responsive Design – 65% of online traffic now comes from mobile. If you want to be discovered, your website has to be responsive to mobile devices.
Focus on Speed – Search rankings are affected by site speed. Studies show that a 1-second delay in speed can result in a 7% decrease in conversion rates.
Make it Accessible – Search isn’t just about Google, Yahoo! or Bing. Other Internet users may prefer Firefox, Mozilla or Safari.
Don’t Make Customers Think – If your e-commerce site appears too complicated to use, the customer will click out. It’s all about giving them a memorable User Experience or UX.
It Should Look Good – Think of your e-commerce store as your window to the Internet. If it looks good and inviting, more people will visit your store.
Decide on Your Checkout Counter – Once you have your customer at the checkout line, you want the payment system as clean, easy and convenient. If consumers are hesitant about credit cards, you can have PayPal or Shopify’s own payment system.
4. Fortify Your Delivery/ Shipment Systems
One reason why e-commerce is slow to develop in the Philippines is a general fear of delivery and shipment problems.
In the case of Punchdrunk Panda, although the founder is based in Canada, the company has a local team which handles all shipping and delivery in the Philippines. Some e-commerce businesses use standard courier services such as LBC or Aboitiz 2GO to deliver merchandise.
If you plan to sell your products in the US, you may wish to consider Shipwire which works well with Shopify. Punchdrunk Panda uses Shipwire’s services for their customers in the US. Make sure the orders are easy to track down in case of delays.
5. Market and Promote Your Website
Marketing and promotion are important functions to carry out in order to grow your e-commerce business.
Here are a few tips on how to market and promote your e-commerce website:
Optimize Your Web Pages.
Create relevant and engaging content on your website.
Distribute content through social media.
Use social media to build your brand, increase awareness and grow your network.
Use Google Ads, Facebook Ads and AdRoll for remarketing; a process whereby relevant ads are shown to the site visitor across multiple devices.
Introduce product discounts, special offers, coupons and other purchase incentives.
Include testimonies on your website.
Post customer reviews and comments on your website.
Integrate a form of customer service on your website such as chat or e-mail support.

Bataan and Corregidor 1941-42 Part 2, The Curtain Rises
Tumblr media
(This article is credited to Jason Weiser. Jason is a long-time wargamer with published works in the Journal of the Society of Twentieth Century Wargamers; Miniature Wargames Magazine; and Wargames, Strategy, and Soldier.)
Author’s Note: Though both Philippine and American units fought in Bataan, I will refer to them as “American” collectively.
As we discussed in Part 1, we’re looking at the Japanese assault on the Philippines as a potential wargaming scenario. To flesh out such a detailed scenario, though, it’s best to know what happened during the historical event.
We already talked about how the American garrison in the Philippines was found completely unprepared for the storm about to engulf it. Worse, while the means to alleviate many of the deficiencies that were extant were being sent, it was a case of “too little, too late.”
That said, the Americans fought very hard with what they had and managed to disrupt the proposed Japanese timetable of 50 days. They held out on Bataan for 99 days alone and denied Manila Bay to the Japanese until the early part of May 1942, when Corregidor was forced to surrender.
The campaign opened like all Japanese strikes across the Pacific, with thunderclap surprise from the air. The attack on Pearl Harbor, some 5,000 miles away, had invalidated any hope of relief for the Philippines. The heart of the American fleet was burning or settling on the mud of Pearl Harbor, and the airfields across the island were filled with the wreckage of burning aircraft. In short, the Philippines was doomed.
The Asiatic Fleet got the first word of the attack on Pearl Harbor, receiving the famous message “Air Raid on Pearl Harbor; this is no drill” at 0230, 8 December 1941. The Army found out an hour later through commercial radio broadcast. General Louis Brereton, commander of the U.S. Army Air Forces, Far East, wrote later: “I knew, we could expect an attack from the [Japanese] anytime after daylight.”
Meanwhile, the Japanese airfields in Formosa (Taiwan) were socked in, and the timetable for the attack was disrupted, giving the Japanese no end of worry. On the American side, paralysis was the order of the day, with Brereton going to see McArthur at 0500 on December 8th to get permission to hit Formosa with his B-17s before the Japanese hit him. MacArthur’s chief of staff, General Richard Sutherland, told him to continue with planning to do so, but await orders from McArthur. Brereton repeated his request five hours later and again was denied. But by 1120, McArthur had relented, ordering two squadrons of B-17s to hit targets in southern Formosa later that day.
The bombers were gassed up and filled with bombs. The P-40s covering Clark and Nichols Fields were low on fuel and had to land. It was the moment where all could go wrong, and it did. The first wave of Japanese bombers appeared just as the B-17s had finished fueling up, and the P-40s at their bases were lining up to get back into the air. The Japanese had, like at Pearl Harbor, taken another Allied force completely by surprise. American anti-aircraft fire was ineffective, exploding 2,000 to 4,000 feet below their intended targets. Many of the shells were, in fact, duds, and the most recent ammunition had been manufactured in 1932. The Japanese bombers were unopposed and wrought havoc. After two waves of high-altitude bombers and one of fighters engaged in strafing runs, Clark and Nichols Fields were left a sea of flames and wreckage.
Only three American P-40s got into the air, and they shot down three or four Japanese aircraft (claims vary). Some older P-35s also got into the air and got three more kills, but many other dispersed fighter bases didn’t even get the word there was an attack, with the main communications center at Clark being knocked out during the attack. The Japanese also hit Iba, a major American dispersal field, catching most of a P-40 squadron on the ground. By the end of December 8th, USAFFE was effectively destroyed, and all it cost the Japanese was seven aircraft.
The Japanese Come Ashore and the Breakout From the Beaches
Tumblr media
The Japanese soon turned their attention to other targets and bombed everything with any sort of military value on Luzon. Over the next two days, they bombed the Cavite Naval Yard, and again hit Clark and Nichols Field, rendering both airbases unusable. They then followed up, hitting every fighter dispersal base they could find and smashing American airpower in the Philippines flat.
On the 10th, the Asiatic Fleet's major naval units were ordered south to link up with Allied fleet units in the Dutch East Indies. The naval defense of the Philippines had now fallen to submarines and PT boats. By the December 11th, U.S. airpower was made up of some 28 P-40s, between five and eight of the P-35, and less than 5 P-26s. The numbers of heavy bombers were even worse, with only three ready to fly any high-altitude missions. By December 15th, these numbers had been reduced further, as what bombers could be flown out were moved to Australia.
The first Japanese landings in the Philippines occurred on December 8th, with the Japanese seizing Batan island, a small island north of Luzon, to use as an airbase for strikes against Luzon. The landings were unopposed, and it seemed that at the time, American forces were unaware that any such landing had occurred.
More landings by the Japanese Tanaka Detachment occurred two days later at Aparri and Gonzaga along Luzon's north coast. Winds and rough seas almost undid the landings, but most of the force managed to come ashore at Gonzaga. This time, the Americans knew about the landings, but the American commander of the North Luzon Force, General Johnathan Wainwright, was convinced that “the landing was a feint ‘to pull some of my forces up to that point and weaken the already weak defenses in the Lingayen Gulf region.’”
The only potential resistance at Aparri that the Japanese faced, a company of American infantry, withdrew in the face of the superior Japanese numbers without a fight. There was also a raid by two B-17s against the Japanese landings at Gonzaga, which produced a Distinguished Service Cross citation for Captain Colin Kelly, who supposedly sank the Japanese Battleship Haruna. By 1300 that day, the Japanese had overrun the airfield at Aparri and had advanced six miles inland to Camalaniguan, where they seized yet another airfield. By December 12th, the Tanaka Detachment had moved 50 miles inland to the south against little to no resistance.
At the same time, another landing of the Kanno Detachment took place at Vigan, also, in northern Luzon. Like at Aparri, the weather and rough seas proved the most threatening to the Japanese landing efforts. A P-40 flying a recon mission was the first warning the Americans had about this landing, and the Americans readied a force of 5 B-17s and a fighter escort to bomb the landings. The Japanese managed to only put a small force ashore before the American planes attacked the landing party, strafing and bombing the Japanese with apparent gusto. But the Americans achieved little, with the Japanese losing two transports and a minesweeper, with damage to the destroyer Murasame and the light cruiser Naka.
These were the last effectual efforts of American airpower during the campaign. The battle for Bataan and Corregidor continues in the third and final piece. Keep your eyes peeled for the concluding chapter of this deadly battle.

The $400 billion outdoor industry sounds alarm on Trump’s trade war tariffs
Tumblr media
Columbia sportswear unveils a new shoe collection with Zedd, a DJ and music producer.
Source: Columbia Sportswear Co.
Representatives from VF Corporation, Columbia Sportswear, Nester Hosiery, and NEMO Equipment met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill this week, letting them know just how hard the U.S.-China trade war is hitting their bottom-line.
“We want our message to get across that this is effecting American businesses, American jobs, American innovation and it’s just delaying all of that,” said Katie Kumerow, sustainability manager for Nester Hosiery, which manufactures specialty socks.
From September 2018 to July 2019, outdoor recreation businesses have paid $1.8 billion more in tariffs compared to the year ago period, according to new data released Thursday by the Outdoor Industry Association. This tariff increase is nearly triple what outdoor industry companies paid last year, according to the trade group’s latest data.
“Our growth is being hampered right now because we are not able to expand our workforce,” says Brent Merriam, Nemo Equipment Chief Operating Officer, who joined fellow association members on Capitol Hill Thursday.
NEMO Equipment, a 30-person New Hampshire-based manufacturer of sleeping bags and tents, has paid $175,000 in tariffs so far. While that might not seem like much, Merriam says it means a lot to his business, and has resulted in putting three jobs on hold.
NEMO Equipment has also had to dedicate time and resources to finding new supply chain partners. Merriam traveled to the Philippines last fall as part of an effort to relocate a line of camp chairs from a supplier in China.
“The resources that we normally would’ve applied to innovating new products have been diverted to making the same product we already make somewhere else,” Merriam said.
Nester Hosiery, which is based in Mount Airy, North Carolina, has faced its own set of challenges when it comes to sock production. Its largest supplier was based in China, but luckily had facilities based in Europe and was able to move operations there to avoid the coming wave of tariffs. The process took nearly six months, and even now, the lead time for ordering materials is three to four weeks longer than before.
“We’ve also already undergone a year and a half of absolute, utter uncertainty,” said Kumerow, following meetings with members of Congress. “Even though we are just being impacted for the most part right now, starting in September, we’ve been scrambling for a year anticipating what might happen.”
Columbia Sportswear provided lawmakers with a mockup of a “tariff price tag” that shows the impact of President Donald Trump’s trade war in a photo taken Sept. 12, 2019.
Mary Catherine Wellons | CNBC
The outdoor recreation economy accounts for 2.2% of the U.S. GDP, or $412 billion, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The trade group estimates that the industry supports 7.6 million American jobs and accounts for $887 billion in consumer spending, factoring in everything from apparel and footwear to airfare and ski lift tickets.
What has been a robust slice of the economy faces job losses and price increases for consumers if the trade war drags on. Emily Vedaa, Columbia Sportswear’s global customs and trade manager, said she hoped to provide lawmakers with tangible examples of the trade war impact.
One of those examples: “tariff price tags.” Columbia mocked up price tags that show the sticker price of a Columbia fleece jacket — along with the regular duty tariff of 32% and additional punitive duty of 25% imposed in recent months by Trump. What starts out as a $100 jacket jumps up to $157. Columbia Sportswear wants the price tags to hammer home how the tariffs are impacting consumers.
“We haven’t raised our prices yet, but we are in the process of considering what and when and how much we can actually do that,” said Vedaa. Columbia’s products were hit hardest by the 15% tariff increase on about $111 billion in Chinese goods that went into effect on Sept. 1, and Vedaa said the company had to scramble to import as much product as possible ahead of that deadline. While Columbia has yet to raise prices on consumers, it’s still absorbing the cost of the tariffs in the meantime.
The outdoor retail group’s members met with lawmakers from nearly a dozen states. The group started the day meeting Rep. Greg Gianforte, R-Mont., where the outdoor recreation economy generates 71,000 jobs and $7.1 billion in consumer spending according to the group.
“No one wins with a trade war,” Gianforte, said in a statement to CNBC. “I’ve urged trade negotiators to quickly resolve talks and announce new trade deals that work for Montana.”
The need for certainty has never been greater as companies who have tried to absorb the cost of tariffs until now, but must contemplate inevitable price increases that will ultimately hit the American consumer.
“There’s so much value in having our members come to Washington,” said Patricia Rojas-Ungar, a lobbyist for the group. “It is that pressure from Americans coming to talk to their elected officials and making calls to the White House that is causing the President to rethink this policy because the policy is not working, and it’s the American people that are being harmed.”

Plastic Infographic Project: Pollution and Waste Research
21.01.19
Our new assignment is to research, develop, design and produce a one to one and a half minute long infographic about the life cycle of a disposable, everyday life plastic item (bottle, coffee lid, spoon, wrapper). The animation will be made for Greenpeace, and will be a viral awareness campaign.
What are disposable plastics, and how are they disposed of effectively?
Single-use plastics, also known as disposable plastics, are only used once before they are just thrown away or recycled. These are items like plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, soda and water bottles and the majority of food packaging. 300 million tonnes of plastic is produced each year and half of it is disposable.  Worldwide, only 10-13% of plastic items are recycled. Around 40 countries have banned disposable plastic bags, with charges or outright prohibitions in place in China, Rwanda and many others including Bangladesh.
Most likely the easiest way of recycling plastic is landfilling. It is highly wasteful and requires a vast amount of space. In countries where landfills are poorly managed, plastic wastes can be easily be blown into waterways or carried out to sea by flood water. In addition, when plastics decompose in landfills, they may leak pollutants into the soil and surrounding environment. So, terrible for the environment. Then of course, recycling is the best way of disposing of plastic, albeit not very effective, as plastics take time to recycle, with plastics bottles taking around a week to fully recycle. Adversely, when left in a landfill, it will take around 100 to 500 years to fully decompose.
Tumblr media
Which countries have the lowest rate of pollution? Which have the highest?
China is the world’s largest plastic producer as of 2013, accounting for nearly one fourth of the global plastics production. In 2012, approximately 58 million tonnes of plastics products were produced in China, with the total sales value of the plastic product manufacturing industry in China amounting to 1.65 trillion yuan, which translates to 242,797,005,000 American dollars, or 188,966,083,762 Great British pounds. The Philippines is the third largest source of discarded plastic that ends up in the ocean. The Philippines generates 2.7 million tonnes of plastic waste annually and 20 per cent—or half a million tonnes—of that leaks into the ocean.
As for the cleanest countries in the world, Finland sits at the top, with a score of 90.68 EPI, also known as the Environmental Performance Index, and is a method of quantifying and numerically marking the environment performance of a a state’s policies. Another country that is incredibly clean, would be Sweden. It has garbage-free streets, minimal air pollution, and sanitary facilities everywhere you go.
How does the UK dispose of plastic?
Across the United Kingdom, as part of local authorities waste management, nearly all councils provide plastics recycling collection. This plastic is then ‘post-consumer’ plastics packaging waste, and is provided to the recycling sector. The amount of which is collected and recycled generally increases year-on-year. In the past few years the UK has seen rapid growth in the volumes of plastics collected and separated for recycling across both the public and private sector.
What innovative ways have plastics been recycled and used again?
Adidas have recently revealed that they have sold more than one million pairs of trainers made from ocean plastic with its partnership with Parley. Footwear made from sustainable sources is starting to gain serious prominence, with more companies jumping in, like Nike. Each shoe uses an average of 11 plastic bottles per pair and incorporates recycled plastic into the shoe’s laces, heel webbing, heel lining, and sock liner covers. Milk jugs and other plastic containers—bottles and containers used for milk, shampoo, laundry detergent and household cleaners are lightweight and tough—but they are usually made from a different type of plastic than beverage bottles. When recycled, they can make new bottles and containers, plastic lumber, picnic tables, lawn furniture, playground equipment, recycling bins and more.
Tumblr media
What are the consequences and long term effects of plastic use? How has plastic effected the environment and what is being done to tackle it?
An interesting article that I found talks about how in 1992, a shipping crate containing 28,000 plastic bath toys was lost at sea when it tipped overboard on its way from Hong Kong to the US. Nearly 20 years later, those same rubber duckies would still be floating the world’s oceans. Anyway, plastic debris is found absolutely everywhere, from the Arctic to Antarctica. More than floating around in the water column, plastic trash is found in the guts of more than  90% of the world’s sea birds, in the stomachs of more than half of the world’s sea turtles, and it is even choking the life out of whales. At the rate which plastic is accumulating in the oceans of the planet, it is predicted that by 2050, the mass of plastic in the world’s oceans will exceed the mass of all the fish which inhabit it.
Plastics are also one of the main products of fracking, which is “the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks, boreholes, etc. so as to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas.” Not all plastic is recyclable and not all recyclable plastic is recycled, and the majority of plastics unfortunately last forever, well-demonstrated by the seemingly immortal 1992 rubber duckies that I mentioned earlier that have survived under the harshest conditions, such as floating around in a marine environment under blistering, unrelenting sunshine or frozen into Arctic ice for years before finally reaching some faraway shore even today.
Tumblr media
The United Kingdom has been cracking down on waste plastic pollution. Some of these ways include banning microbeads, which are inside of toothpaste and gels and body wash etc. These tiny plastics were so prolific that as many as 100,000 could be washed down the drain in just a single shower. They are also going to make plastic-free aisles in supermarkets, as well as banning cottonbuds and plastic straws and disposable coffee cups.
What are some creative solutions to plastic use?
People are using plastic products such as bottles for reuse instead of simply trashing them. DIY no-sew zipper case: it’ll help organize your life, for almost no cost at all. You can use them to store all sorts of art and craft supplies. Maybe a soda bottle sprinkler? Simply poke two holes in a 2 litre plastic soft drink bottle, insert the hose into the bottle and wrap some tape to fix the hose to the opening of the bottle, and simply turn on the tap. Bottle cap mosaic: if you want a gorgeous and eco-friendly piece of mosaic art for your walls, start gathering all of the plastic bottle caps you take off. If you don’t have enough, collect them from friends and neighbours. You can even simply make a DIY storage container from an old plastic bottle.

15 TO WATCH: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/NEWS/BUSINESS/MARKETING/ENDORSEMENT ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 16
With Jamie Swimmer
President-Elect Donald Trump’s sports industry involvement has been well chronicled, especially his golf resort holdings. What’s not as transparent is the impact his foreign policy decisions may have on the global sports industry -- and on sporting goods and apparel in particular. Overall, China exported about $482 billion in goods to the United States in 2015, more than any other country exported to the U.S., according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative. It’s no secret that the vast majority of the world’s sneakers are made in China, Indonesia, Korea, and the Philippines. But look at Callaway golf clubs – the leading American club maker designs its sticks in California, but parts come from China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, and many clubs are assembled in Mexico. Likewise Wilson tennis racquets are manufactured in Shanghai, as are Head and Prince. And Spalding basketballs are officially pieced together in Seoul. Within golf, four of the world’s top golf cart companies manufacture their vehicles in China, including No. 1 Marshell Electric Vehicle Co.; No. 10 EVT is in Thailand. If Trump is able to implement his anti-import trade proposals, including a 45% tariff on goods imported from China and a 35% tariff on Mexican goods, it could hit the American sporting goods industry especially hard, and may even curtail sports leagues’ expansion into Asia. Time will tell if the new President’s tough talk on trade will pan out – as a businessman with complex golf resort ties around the world, he may take a step back and reconsider some of the ramifications of his proposed policies, on sports and elsewhere.
The San Diego Chargers are officially moving to Los Angeles. The Southern California city that had no NFL teams last year will soon boast two teams for the foreseeable future. According to SportsBusiness Journal, Chargers Chain Dean Spanos made the official announcement that his team will be moving to L.A. beginning with the 2017 season. The Chargers will play their home games at Carson’s StubHub Center, which can hold only 30,000 spectators. That marks a massive downgrade in size from Qualcomm Stadium, representing the NFL’s smallest stadium by a longshot even with upgrades. The team passed up on using the Rose Bowl as a home, though they will join the Los Angeles Rams in their new $2.6 billion stadium in Inglewood upon completion. The Chargers "will change its logo to feature the letters L and A, arranged similarly" to the Dodgers' logo. It also will "have a lightning bolt." Franchise musical chairs is almost over – at least for now.  Chargers economics dictate that a share of a larger pot of revenue in Los Angeles is better than more time and effort chasing stadium projects by themselves. Now, it is the Raiders turn to take center stage.
As the dust settles on the San Diego Chargers announcement that they are moving to Los Angeles, attention now focuses on the market they’re leaving behind. What will the day to day impact be on a Charger-less city? While the game day economic impact will mostly be felt by stadium-adjacent small businesses like bars and restaurants, parking facilities, and Uber drivers, the biggest hits will likely affect the region’s nonprofits, and tourism sales. Despite the knocks it is taking for current franchise relocations, the NFL tries to be a good corporate citizen. The NFL Foundation hands out millions of dollars each year through its Play 60 Challenge, “A Crucial Catch“ American Cancer Society partnership, and individual player foundation grants. In San Diego, the Chargers have contributed or facilitated about $13 million to local charities, including providing 1.3 million meals to the San Diego Food Bank and helping the San Diego Blood Bank save 200,000 lives through blood drives. As for tourism, “I can’t pay for that kind of exposure,” Tourism Authority CEO Joe Terzi told the Union-Tribune, referring to the beauty shots of sparkling beaches and sunny skies during televised Chargers games. Bottom line: the intangible benefits of having an NFL team in your city matter much more than season ticket sales and naming rights deals.
The pro tennis circuit goes Down Under this week, and for American fans, it might be time to Sock It to Me. Young Nebraskan Jack Sock, 24, just won his second career title in New Zealand – one of the run up tournaments to the Australian Open beginning on Monday – has amassed $4.8 million in prize money. Ranked No. 20, Sock needs only three wins in Melbourne to supplant No. 19 John Isner as the highest-ranking American on the ATP Tour. On the women’s side, all eyes are still on Serena Williams, as she continues her race against Father Time and off-court distractions like her burgeoning fashion career and just-announced engagement. The tennis calendar’s first Major has raised its total prize money purse to $36.2 million (AU$50 million), "continuing the tournament’s stunning growth," according to the Melbourne Herald Sun. Both the men's and women's singles champions will receive a record $2.7 million -- an increase of $218,000 -- while "first-round losers will walk away" with almost $36,000 each, up more than $8,000 from 2016. Prize money has been boosted by 14% overall. More good news – according to the Physical Activity Council, U.S. tennis participation has increased to 17.9 million players, up 1% from 2013, meaning a slightly bigger pool from which to farm much-needed future American stars.
In a unanimous decision, FIFA has voted to expand the World Cup field from 32 to 48 teams starting in 2026. According to the London Independent, the new format will feature 16 groups of three teams “that sees the top two qualify for a knockout round of 32.” This replaces the current format that sees the top two teams from all eight groups advance to the round of 16. The 2026 World Cup is likely to be hosted in North America, with the United States, Canada, and Mexico preparing to submit a joint bid. The plans will see the total number of games "increase from 64 to 80," and the new format is expected to generate around $1 billion extra for the governing body from the World Cup alone. Critics of this move slam FIFA President Gianna Infantino for making a “selfish move” to deepen his personal pockets as well as those of everyone else in soccer’s main governing body. While any tinkering has its critics, kudos to Infantino for attempting to “shake up” the World Cup format – and also to increase global participation on an unprecedented scale.
Carl Edwards stunned the racing world with his decision to retire and “pursue other interests outside of driving,” according to Foxsports.com. Edwards will not compete in the upcoming 2017 season and will be replaced by Daniel Suarez, who won the Xfinity Series championship last year. Over his illustrious 13-year career, Edwards won 28 Cup races and “might be the best driver of this generation to never win a NASCAR Premier Series championship.” NASCAR insiders figured that the 37-year-old was good for at least 5-10 more years competing on the track, hence the “totally shocked” reaction by the motor sports community. "Carl Edwards is the type of guy that once he’s done with racing, he’ll probably never, ever delve into any type of racing….The sport takes a step back without guys like Carl Edwards. We need more Carl Edwards-type individuals in racing,” said Brad Daugherty, co-Owner of JTG Daugherty Racing. Another example of an athlete walking away in his prime for reasons other than money and fame. Good for Edwards to focus on other endeavors as he moves forward.
A new economic study commissioned by LA 2024 reveals that hosting the Summer Olympics is Los Angeles could generate as much as $11.2 billion in economic output for the city. According to the Orange County Register, the analysis done by Beacon Economics and the UC Riverside School of Business Center for Economic Forecasting & Development shows that the LA 2024 Olympics could create up to “79,307 jobs” and between $152-$167 million in additional tax revenues in the city. The analysis “projected 3.3 million visitors would attend” the Games, with the average visitor “staying in the city 5.5 days and spending an average of $230.07 per day.” While these studies are often a bit exaggerated, a huge selling point for Los Angeles’ hopeful bid to land the Olympics is that the city plans on using existing arenas and stadiums throughout the Southern California area. Some question these “civic studies,” arguing they are self-serving. For the most part, this one reflects the tremendous economic potential that the Games will have for the region. Most studies also ignore the positive branding, public relations, and international awareness benefits that come to a region after hosting a two-week mega event.
While our recent spate of bad winter weather has caused millions of dollars in damage and travel nightmares for the general public and stranded sports teams alike, it’s a ray of profit sunshine for the winter sports industry. The mounds of fresh powder piling up in California and Nevada ski resorts – more than 20 feet of new snow in some areas – ski resorts are seeing visitor numbers 5-10% higher than the same time last season. And those prime ski conditions are extending across the country, according to the National Ski Area Association, a trade group for the $3 billion industry. Ski resorts in California and Nevada reported 7.25 million skier and snowboarder visits during the 2015-2016 season, a huge jump over the 4.4 million the previous season. This year will see even more visitors, but they’ll be paying higher prices: Vail Resorts Epic Pass, which offers full season access to Vail resorts nationwide, will cost you $809 this season, a 5% increase over last year. While every snow cloud has a silver lining, resort operators wouldn’t stand to profit as much on Mother Nature’s bounty if they hadn’t focused on “the fan experience” every bit as much as their more mainstream sports peers.
The San Francisco 49ers are suing Santa Clara after the city claimed that the team violated its contract. According to the San Jose Mercury News, the 49ers have invited auditors to Levi’s Stadium to review documents with the intention of proving the accusations to be false. The “team wants a judge to settle the score by requiring the city to sign documents verifying no breaches occurred.” The legal battle between the 49ers and Santa Clara has been going on for months now, but this lawsuit marks an escalation in tensions between both sides. The lawsuit states the Stadium Authority has "embarked on a scheme to concoct and fabricate false accusations of breach or nonperformance…to create a pretext for terminating the Stadium Management Agreement.” This dispute originally started when Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor “suspected taxpayer dollars were being spent on the venue in violation of the voter-approved Measure J.” While the stadium continues to bring in significant international events such as the Super Bowl and major soccer festivals, the parties continue to litigate over emotional “performance” issues. Hopefully, they can be resolved quickly in order to focus on the bigger picture.
The New England Revolution have been in search of a soccer-specific home stadium in Boston for years now, but a final plan stills appears to be out of sight. According to the Boston Globe, Revolution Owner Robert Kraft’s effort to settle down and build in Rochester is “all but dead,” as the Boston Teachers Union will not budge on their land. The union is reluctant to give up the 2.7 acres that their headquarters has called home for four decades, which has stunted Kraft’s plans. The union is “asking for a deal that Kraft…thinks is too rich.” Kraft “needs about 10 acres for his stadium, and much of that would come from UMass.” But the stadium “doesn’t work without Kraft taking over the adjacent property, too.” The union is asking for at least $15.7 million in cash to settle the issue. Kraft “wants a soccer stadium in Boston, but not if it feels like he’s being ripped off.” The Kraft family has looked long and hard for appropriate stadium solutions, using the successful model of Foxborough/Gillette Stadium/Patriot Place as a guide. Hopefully, something can be done quickly.
As the Atlanta Falcons prepare for the AFC Conference Championship, Atlanta Hawks General Manager Wes Wilcox is being disciplined after making a “racially charged joke” during a season-ticket holder event last month. According to ESPN.com, the unspecified disciplinary action came from within. Deadspin initially reported that Wilcox responded to a few challenging questions from attendees by saying he had “a black wife and three mixed kids, so I’m used to being angry and argumentative.” The team conducted an internal investigation following the comments and concluded that Wilcox in fact did not use the worlds “angry” and “argumentative,” but did mention race. Hawks Senior Vice President/Community and Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer Nzinga Shaw said, "…I am not convinced that what we heard and read in Deadspin is a direct quote…Wes, however, certainly did make his off-color statement, which included elements of describing his wife's race…We certainly do not approve of this behavior and we are going to handle this manner internally." Sensitivity rules the day, and those dealing with the ticket buying public should be held to a much higher standard. This is especially the case with a team fighting for its rightful market share and competing with two new stadiums opening within the next year.
South Korea has announced that it will spend approximately $780 million to prepare for next year’s PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympics. According to the Korea Times, this number comes from the country’s Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism, as the governing body is setting up for South Korea’s first-ever Winter Olympics. Most of these expenses will be used to support “operational preparations, national team athletes’ training and facility construction.” South Korea is heavily investing in its athletes for the 2018 Olympics, as “it will pay for overseas training for athletes, recruit more foreign coaches and help secure more time for the athletes to train in the Olympic facilities.” The largest portion of the budget, approximately $608.3 million, has been allocated for construction of facilities. The overall spending budget for the Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism has been reduced “following the revision of laws that allow the organizers to pursue various business activities and receive tax benefits.” All Olympic cities are acutely aware that they will be evaluated on budget performance, as well as overall legacy. Will the South Korea Games be more like the successes of London, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Sydney; or will they be evaluated in a lesser light like Sochi, Athens, and Beijing?
The San Jose Sharks have a new ticket pricing guide: sales history. According to the Silicon Valley Business Journal, the Sharks are “now able to research the sales history and current demand for each individual seat at the SAP Center.” The team has used row-by-row data historically, but has since found that seat-by-seat data is far more accurate to appropriately price seats. This season’s 16 different available ticket prices will jump up to 32 different price levels for next season, and price increases will be nearly universal around the SAP Center. The biggest price hikes will be for Premium Glass seats, which sold for between “$137 and $222 per game last season.” Those same seats will go for between $300 and $400 next year” under the new pricing model. The SAP Center can accommodate up to 17,562 spectators, making it one of the smallest arenas in the NHL. As usual, SAP Center leads the way in technological and market innovation. Using the parent company’s vision and business acumen, the building now has added ammunition with which to appeal to consumers and maneuver in a highly competitive market.
MLB’s push to create more African American pitcher and catcher prospects may pay off this year with high school pitcher Hunter Greene “projected to be the first player chosen” in the MLB draft. Greene, a 6-4, 205-pound right hand pitcher, currently attends Notre Dame High School in Los Angeles. MLB's African-American population is "hovering around 8%." If drafted at the top of the class this June, Greene would become the first right-handed high-school pitcher to be selected No. 1 overall. There were “only 14 African-American pitchers on opening day rosters last year – 1.6% of all major-league pitchers.” "If you see a guy like Hunter become a really high pick as a pitcher, I’d be thrilled,” said MLB VP/Youth & Facility Development and Director of MLB's Urban Youth Academy Darrell Miller. “Talking about it is one thing, but seeing guys come through the academies, and the impact he could have on the mound, it gives these kids a vehicle, knowing there’s a chance.” The success of diversity programs must be evaluated with patience, deliberation, and long-term vision. This is one of those cases. Look for increased and consistent talent payoff in the times ahead.
Budding high school football players now have an alternative to attending college for three years before turning pro: Pacific Pro Football. According to the Washington Post, this upstart league offers players “a salary and instruction they feel is lacking in the college game.” NFL agent Don Yee, who serves as Pac Pro CEO, said that the goal is to “give young prospects a professional outlet to prepare for the NFL.” The league launches in the “midst of a growing debate about amateurism and a college model that rewards student-athletes with scholarships but not salaries.” While the NFL has shown interest in starting a developmental league, Pacific Pro is not affiliated with the NFL at all. Games will take place in smaller stadiums, “perhaps at a community college or a Division III college campus.” If the first season goes according to plan, the league hopes to expand into Northern California and potentially, the Midwest. Interesting concept that identifies an underutilized niche in the market. The league has been in the planning stages for a while, reflecting the deliberate business approach of its founders. After the WFL, USFL, and World League of American Football, the sporting public may be looking forward to another fresh alternative.  It has certainly been a long time since the last one.
