once again marvel demonstrates its dedication to uncritical nationalism over, whatever, human rights, i guess
technically, this isn't a new superhero - "sabra" as a character was invented two years prior to the sabra and shatila massacre, and ostensibly her name refers only to the slang term describing Israeli-born Jews. she is, and always has been, however, a nationalist and a cop who's been directly responsible for the deaths of Arab children, so. maybe a participant in genocide written by white American gentiles is not the best choice for the first explicit representation of a Jewish hero in the MCU, idk, just a thought
anyway if y'all want to read more about this most interesting decision here's a pretty good article unpacking it:
marvel has a new superhero who is israeli & named after the sabra massacre of palestinian and lebanese muslims & she’s in a movie called captain america: new world order. are you fucking joking
#marvel#mcu#sabra#linden cites sources#apparently the term ''sabra'' was used most commonly during the mid-1900s; described the culture of Israeli-born Jews#by comparing them to the sabra plant - a fruit which is prickly & tough on the outside but with a sweet & refreshing interior#u can read the wikipedia article it comes up in the first 5 results if u google ''sabra''#not included in this link but in another article i decided against citing bc it was badly written & prob not super reliable:#director's explanation for the ''new world order'' title allegedly involved yammering about sam needing to build & find a place in the new#post-steve world ig. fascinating stuff :)#also scarlet witch doesn't count as jewish rep bc they went out of the way to put crosses on her walls in wandavision#so yeah i'm p sure this is the first jewish character in a marvel movie that isn't a villain. hi magneto my beloved#nationalism#palestine#american propaganda machine#linden interacts#current events
