Hii, I saw your latest post and your art style is so pretty?? What?? I have a question though. How do you do the paint one? Or rendering in general. Like genuinely, I have a problem with rendering and I can't seem to quite understand it on my own. Do you just start with flat colors? Do you do lineart or colors right after the sketch? Is the "lineart" just added later? Painted over? Erased to give thinner and thicker lines?? I'm really curious!!

hi! im not the best painter tbh! though i do have a background in painting but ill try my best to explain

diff artists have different approaches to how they paint but generally yes, you would start out with big shapes first and then go into the details - work big picture first. like, if you squint and the drawing makes sense in terms of value and colour and shape, youre on the right path.

i can kinda show this with a warmup in-class speedpaint exercise we did a couple weeks ago where we were tasked with painting an eye in about 30 minutes (i was late and only had 20 lol)

luckily ive got the layers for this. i start of with a base layer, kind of like a underpaint layer since that's how i personally learned to paint traditionally. i did have a sketch before laying down this base layer under it but i ended up using it for final rendering details lol

after that i started laying down the big blocks of colour. i wasn't necessarily aiming for complete colour accuracy here, i just wanted to match the value. i chose a pink underlayer to influence my colour choices because the underlayer will peak through the blocks of colour i paint over it

and then (forgive me if this seems like "draw the rest of the owl" in terms of progression) but this is where i started going in with finer detail. i did the rest of the render on the sketch layer i had so you can see some of the lines from the sketch here

here's the layers completely seperate from each other

even for the flat colour version of my character, i had an underpaint layer! i used yellow and orange since i wanted her colours to be warm and used a semi-opaque brush to put her colours in rather than using a completely opaque brush

when i wanted to do the painted version, i put the lineart on multiply and reduced the opacity and brushed in some some quick shadows on seperate layer on hard light mode to give me a good base to start painting with

and then i did all the rendering and details on a new layer ontop of everything. i keep the lineart light so i can paint over it easily and also colour pick from it when i want a more distinct line to seperate certain shapes. i unfortunately dont know how to explain this part because a lot of this is intuitive to me and i'm still learning. but you gotta make use of different types of "edges" in painting, and you would generally have more contrast in the focal point of your painting than in other places to draw the eye to that point. i suggest researching the use of edges in painting if you really wanna learn more - because im a terrible teacher haha

for fun here's what the rendering layer for this one looks like on its own and the finished thing for comparison

there's other things you need to learn too, like bounce light, atmospheric perspective, ambient occlusion... and colour theory is always important! i could go on for a long time. there's a lot of pieces to the puzzle and it may seem overwhelming but there's tons of resources online and it will all become second nature to you as you keep practicing

Jonathan was nursing the lukewarm watered down punch that filled his styrofoam cup.

He couldn’t believe he's actually here, let alone the reason why he's even here to begin with.

All dressed up in a formal suit and not in his long lab coat or his…costume for his alter ego, he dons now and then, especially on nights like this one.

Professor Crane was off in a corner, shuffling in his dress shoes.

He dictated whether he should take this opportunity to talk to you or just give up when the getting is good, knowing that any attempt to approach you would likely be futile.

Oh, but he adored how you seemed to glow under the mini spotlights highlighting your art exhibition.

You are the apple of Gotham State University’s eye. You’ve won a handful of teaching awards, many of your students brought many accolades to the university…and now here you are exhibiting your new collection in one of the most prestigious art galleries Gotham has ever developed.

At first he expected to loathe you. The way you were so bright eyed, cheery. Your very presence dripped in nauseating positivity…

That is until the first time you shined your light his way.

Your smile, your voice…whatever disdain he had for you dissolved into something else entirely the opposite, though he didn't dare put a name to it.

Much like the rest of the staff, Jonathan became deeply infatuated with you.

“Oh, Mr. Crane, I didn't expect to see you here! I'm so glad you could make it!”

Your sweet sing-songy voice broke him from his thoughts of the past to the present moment.

“Oh, uhh…Yes of course, I wouldn't miss this for anything!”

You giggled. “That's very sweet of you, have you got a chance to see it up close yet?”

“Um..not yet, I was waiting until the crowd dispersed so I can enjoy your pieces to the fullest.”

If Jonathan could pat himself on the back for that save, he would, perhaps it helped that it wasn't entirely untrue.

You nodded. “I understand, I definitely wasn't expecting so many staff and students from school to show up this evening…”

Beautiful, personable and modest…

What the hell was Jonathan thinking he even had a sliver of a chance with you.

Jonathan was slowly closing in on himself and was about to retreat back to his corner and allow you to go back to your exhibition…

“Oh look, some of the crowd has died down…” You looked over your shoulder to see some of the attendants have begun browsing other pieces in the gallery.

“Would you like me to bend your ear about my work, I promise I won't ramble for too long,” you giggled as you reached your hand out.

Jonathan was like a deer in the headlights, and your hand close to him was like the oncoming car.

As trivial as the gesture was, he never suspected to be able to feel your touch so soon.

God, not that he believed in one, but Jonathan silently prayed his hands wouldn't be sweaty or clammy as he gently rested his hand in yours.

“Gladly-”

Jonathan gasped as your hand readily clasped around his. Not an ounce of hesitance or delay in your reaction nor on your face.

The professor voluntarily allowed you to whisk him away and directly in front of your work.

“So..technically these pieces have a chronological order, but I tried to keep it mostly up to interpretation-”

As you began your spiel, Jonathan soaked in every word.

You are so brilliant, none of these average viewers or professors could possibly appreciate your thought process…

But Jonathan sure would…especially as your work leant itself to the human psyche.

“I'm sure that as a professor of psychology, you could…appreciate what I'm attempting to portray…”

Without even thinking of how he may sound or what he was actually saying, Jonathan responded full heartedly.

“Oh absolutely….”

The millisecond it took Jonathan to blink, he quickly realized how idiotic he must sound. “Uh, erm..I mean…it's a successful attempt to me…”

“I'm glad you think so…I worry it may have gone over some of the other staff's head, but it's the effort of coming out to support that counts.”

Jonathan internally gritted his teeth. That was absolutely not enough. You shouldn't have to accept just any minimum effort.

“Which…now I'm curious, Professor Crane-”

“P-Please, you can call me Jonathan…”

How he wished he could have caught your small beaming smile for a moment longer, so that he could commit it to memory with the utmost detail.

“Jonathan…” You tested. “What do you specialize in your field? Any studies of interest?”

You had no notion of the can of worms you just cracked open.

“Why, my main focus is on fears, my dear. Phobias…”

Now that you have brought upon his fixation, confidence slowly enveloped the scrawny man.

Even more so when he noticed your eyes lighten slightly.

“Fears? Such a simple term for a myriad of things, yes?”

Jonthan chuckled. “Yes, indeed…”

Soon the roles of speaker and listener were reversed.

You have never seen Professor Cra-Jonahan be so animated before. It made you elated to witness this side of him.

You wanted to high five yourself for having the guts to ask a rather basic question, but gaining the best outcome.

You leaned in closer. His words of phobias and their potential to push the human mind's capacity beyond what we comprehend now…intrigued you.

“Oh…erm…sorry I didn't mean to ramble for so long-”

“You're fine, Jonathan, really! It was nice to hear you speak so passionately about something you are clearly well-versed in.” You giggled lightheartedly.

“Really?”

“Absolutely!” You assured him. “Um, I know it's getting late, but I would love to continue this conversation another time? I'm already feeling pretty inspired for my next series…if you're comfortable with that, I mean…”

Jonathan felt like a fish that came to the sudden realization that he was still in fact out of the water.

He managed to keep breathing somehow for this long, and he did not want to ruin this opportunity that seemed to bless his efforts.

“Y-Yes…I would be delighted too!” Jonathan confirmed, hoping he didn't come off too gleeful.

“Perfect, here-” You glanced down at your clutch and quickly swiped a business card and pen.

You scribbled your personal home phone and offered it to Jonathan. “I know we see each other at work periodically, but figured this could help us stay in touch.”

“Excellent…erm…see you on Monday?”

“Yep!” You nodded with a sweet beaming smile. “Thanks so much for coming tonight, I appreciate it, Jonathan.”

“Of course, my dear. I wouldn't miss it for the world!”

Jonathan rarely looked on the bright side of things, it's done nothing but blind him in the past…

However, looking at your warm smile, your overall welcoming aura…one that you've now shared almost a couple of hours exclusively with him.

Needless to say, he wanted more. Your precious light, your intrigued enthusiasm, your name presence. Now that he had you for a brief moment, he longed for more…to be your one and only muse.

Uhh so way, way back in the day, I wrote YuGiOh fic over on fanfic.net (okay stay with me), and I had this big multichapter fic called Homecoming that was pretty popular and I never finished it and for this I will never be forgiven. I started posting it in 2008 (💀) and last I checked, as recently as 2022 it was still getting the odd comment, and honestly I feel so, so bad about it and more than once I've looked back at it and been like, could I finish it?

But I can't, because I was a literal baby child when I started it and it just doesn't work for me anymore.

So then I was like, okay could I rewrite it and make it less like something my baby child self wrote? But that didn't feel right either—people like the original for what it is, and if I rewrote it as an adult, it would change so drastically that it would really just be a different story.

So then I was like. Okay well if it would end up a different story anyway. Why not just write a different story.

😂 All this to say that Once More, With Feeling is sort of like a spiritual successor to that old fic. It's similar in a lot of ways, but also different in a lot of ways. I guess it's my way of asking 'okay, how would I tackle this now?' The title is in reference to uh, the fact that I'm trying this again and also that the characters have sort of been here before and now I'm making them do it all over, a bit to the left 😂

I can't say for sure whether it'll ever see the light of day, I certainly won't post it without writing all of it first. Not again 💀

When Ryou enters his apartment's main room, he's hit with the smell of something delicious cooking. Malik has taken over his tiny kitchenette and is working at something with great concentration at the stove; Ryou goes and hooks his chin over his shoulder to investigate.

“Your landlord still hasn't fixed that burner,” Malik says with annoyance, jerking his head in the direction of the front right stove burner, which hasn't worked in several months.

Ryou shrugs. “I know. He hasn't fixed the hole in the ceiling, either, so I'm really not holding my breath about it.”

“I'm going to find out where he lives and put a brick through his window,” Malik mutters.

“He probably won't fix that, either,” Ryou says with a snort. He prods Malik in the side, making him jump and then look at him, narrow-eyed. “You're making pancakes.”

“Good observation,” Malik says, carefully flipping the pancake currently in the pan to reveal its perfectly cooked underside.

“You don't like sweet things for breakfast,” Ryou says, a fresh smile tugging at his mouth.

“Don't go mistaking this for a selfless gesture,” Malik tells him. “It's a blatant bribe to keep you sweet so you won't bail on going to see Yugi today.”

Ryou's face morphs into an indignant scowl. “I'm not going to bail.”

“Sure,” Malik says, leering at him with a very punchable smirk, the effect of which is somewhat undercut by the fact that he's still diligently making Ryou pancakes.

so ! basic character ! there are only really two characters that actually have a presence throughout the novel, the rest are here for one part and then because of time travel, they never show up again.

it is dual pov, the characters are two siblings. the older one is a 15 year old boy named ernie solace, he is very quiet, studious, the loner type. very much has got anxiety. also is queer but it only exists as subtext because i wanted to experiment on characters whose orientations are never specified but you just know. the youngest sibling is 12 years old, her name is lizzie and she's the opposite of her brother. she is extremely loud and blunt, very kind but she can be a bit too flashy and a bit too much. they have very contrasting personalities, you see. a lot of the books revolves around them doing risky activities that might threaten their life. ernie is very cautious, they almost didn't go time travelling because he was not into the idea. lizzie, however, is all about the adventure, seize the day, never doubt yourself. a lot of her decisions do stem from her burning wish to be the same always, never grow up, never leave the present moment. so you can probably guess she is most open to time travelling.

the actual time travel thing. the first chapter of the novel, their uncle whom they have never seen before, he shows up. he is a scientist and at the end of his visit, he confesses that he is here for them. apparently, there was another obscure scientist in the 1830s who had found the answer of time traveling and had even done it himself, traveling to the past. but the thing is, he is trapped. he cannot return to his present time, he is stuck in the past forever. he did leave behind journals, which were found by the uncle and had given instructions on how to save him. but, it was very specific on who could save him.

I don’t know. I have taken steps, in case I fail to return back on my own, and I am positive that even if all fails, these tasks shall prove to be what I need to return home. I have been precise of what needs to be done and how exactly it shall be done, the only question is: who will do it for me? I do not hesitate to call myself a lonely man, it is only the truth. I have no one to do favours for me, I can only rely that someone discovers this journal and pities me enough to find me in some hidden corner in time. Well, Reader, if you are reading this, I do need help. What are the chances that you know of me or have some fondness for me to partake in these tasks for me? I do only wish to return back home, if you will allow me — It will be laborious and I think it can be done by only some. It is not to be done alone, a pair is necessary by all means. Two people, siblings or friends, two people who have trust in one another and it is characteristic for them to work together. Different mindsets perhaps, two people who think in different ways. It must be too much to ask but I want them with love. I want them to love, I think, if they love, they shall find these tasks only an adventure. Curious people, who will find more than the objects I tell them to find. Suffering should not be characteristic for this pair. In the end, I think the only thing I expect from them is hope. There are very few grown persons who match this description, only children have that hope and curiosity and love in their hearts. the uncle thought lizzie and ernie seemed to match the descriptions, so he had asked them. eventually, they did agree though ernie challenged him. they are to travel through five periods and find five objects.

1884 - a single diamond earring that belonged to a girl named mariana.

1850 - california gold rush where they have to find a specific quantity of gold

1648 - a map of a sea voyage, acquired from a pirate ship

october 14, 1066 - battle of hastings, a cloth of linen dropped by a fallen soldier

something like 10 million bce? - a leaf and drops of dew, untouched by human beings.

the theory was that, if all these items scattered and found from different times were brought together, these could cause such an anachronism that it would revert all the changes that were done to by both the scientist and lizzie and ernie, placing all three of them in their actual present time. it doesn't work on the scientist's end, spoiler alert. yeah, he just realized something huge and opened something that was more huge. the second book is about that, basically.

the book is essentially about hope above all. hope that the scientist has for his life, hope that lizzie and ernie have to save him, hope matters in a personal and character-specific way too. lizzie's hope is that nothing really changes for her while ernie doesn't mind change but he just hopes that whatever comes, it's going to be okay. it plays around with sibling dynamics and that familial co-dependency. even their last name, solace, means comfort and hope.

Warriors AU: A Superhero society of cats!

Each cat is born with their own superpower with a unique title that is said to be StarClan-given; not every superpower is unique tho, since multiple cats can have similar powers (e.g. lightning, super speed). So if two cats had the same superpower (e.g. fire power) the titles for their superpower will be different (like "Fire Blaster" & "Rage Flame"). For the powers regarding The Three, I'll talk more about them later on!

The ranks in this AU go like this:

Kits -> Kits

Apprentice -> Intern

Warrior -> Hero

Medicine Cats -> Medics

Deputy -> #2 Hero

Leader -> #1 Hero OR Superhero

In this AU, The Three still have their powers like in the books. But the difference with them is that they are known as The Superstars!! They can take their superpowers and reach it to maximum heights by briefly evolving into a Superstar Form! <- I'LL MAKE A SEPARATE POST ABOUT THIS CONCEPT LATER

When Firestar got revealed to be the Fourth cat in the prophecy, his Superstar Form is literally just him going Super Saiyan mode LOL!!!

By the end of the Great Battle, they've fulfilled the prophecy and can no longer take on their Superstar Forms. Just like in the books, they also lose their own superpowers altogether in this AU.

BloodClan in the AU!

I'M HONESTLY SUPER EXCITED TO TALK MORE ABOUT MY AU BLOODCLAN,,,,, UHH SORRY THIS ASK RESONSE IS LONG ALREADY LOL!!!!

BloodClan in this AU are a squad of punks that reside in Radioscream City, an abandoned city that was once sprawled & bustling with many people. All-over town are cardboard forts and LOOOTS graffiti. The members in BloodClan are referred to as grunts; their vibes have inspirations taken from Pokemon rival teams, specifically Team Yell!!!! Much like Team Yell, BloodClan grunts are HUUUGE FANS of Scourge & also have like,, posters they draw fanart on to show support for him. Even after Scourge is gone, BloodClan basically lives on as a Scourge fanbase haha

BloodClan cats do have superpowers, but they all share the same kind: Graffiti Saliva, where their saliva has become toxic paint they use to graffiti anywhere they go (i created this concept years before pokemon came up with grafaiai who's literally just my bloodclan concept- im p sure the concepts used elsewhere too but man lol)

A VERY TL;DR (NOT REALLY) BLOODCLAN LORE: growing up, Scourge (as Tiny) grew up being obsessed with video games, vampires & loved dark-colored aesthetics & graffiti-styled stuff (got it from one of their owner's kid who he liked to watch while they're gaming). When he ran away to Radioscream City after the Tigerclaw incident, it was overrun with cats without a name for themselves.

When Tiny called himself Scourge, he created BloodClan out of the stray cats & introduced them to graffiti painting. His otaku, vampire-loving side never changed & he references video games in life a lot. Scourge'd also say something like "LAWL" or "WE ARE TEH HAWTNESS o3o" or "GET REKT". After Scourge obtained Graffiti Saliva, he found a discarded painting mask that he wears 24/7.

I'll start off by saying I'm somewhat of a multishipper, as I enjoy and ship many ships at the same time, even those with same characters 👁👁

That being said-

I really enjoy mc ships. What I really love about hpma fandom is how creative it is with each MC's (and other ocs in general) personalities and how great they work in dynamic with canon characters (mostly Cassandra, Ivy and Daniel from what I've noticed). And tbh, I kinda envy them in a way, cuz my ass can't ship my mc with Dan despite me wanting to 😭😭😭 (I mean, I have Melly/Cass but it's not exactly mc/canon ship).

If we're talking about mc as a character within the game, I enjoy think their dynamic with characters like Cass, Dan, Ivy and Lottie. They are really adorable and if romance option happens I'm pretty sure it'll be ever cuter! 👁👁

Anyway, mc ships for the win!

I do enjoy most non-mc ships and if anything, I'm more of the active shipper for those :"D

I do have ships I don't particularly like. Not that I hate them, if anything I find some of them cute, they're just... Not my thing. For reasons.

Speaking of ships I do enjoy, Kevin/Robyn (or Revin) is one of them! They have one of the cutest and most entertaining dynamics in the game and I honestly wish for them to become canon as soon as possible 👁👁 Really hope they won't end up together by Y7 cuz we need to see as much of them as a couple as possible 😭

I also enjoy any sapphic Cassandra ship, such as Cassivy, Cass/Lottie and Cass/Robyn(but mostly as a joke). I also fancy Ivy/Lottie quite a lot.

The rest I'm either more on a neutral side (as in, high chances are I'll find them cute but I won't go feral mode when I see them) or I don't particularly like(just not my thing, again)

As for Daniel/Cassandra...

I'm sorry guys, I truly am, but a time has come for me to come out as a CassDan shipper. It's a guilty pleasure ship of mine and I'm embarrassed of the fact I love this ship as much as I do😭😭😭 Year 3? Y3 what??? I don't know it haha (I'm in denial)

Like I swear, I have no idea why I like it am but I hate the fact that I do 😭😭😭

Anyway, THAT BEING SAID, there's a catch: ❗I quite frankly don't ship them as they are like canonically❗(which why I PERFECTLY understand those who reasonably hate this ship) as in I have sort of my own silly interpretation of their dynamic as frienemies/rivals sort of(which is what sidequests actually suggest but main storyline really doesn't agree with that), but like on equal level? As in,there isn't a power dynamic, like between a bully and a victim, they are being shit to each other without one having more significant advantage over the other. But again, that's my own personal interpretation. And that's the one I'm gonna stick with, thanks 😃😃😃

So uh.. I got like a bunch of new followers recently, so first off.. Hi everyone! 🙂 (Where did you all come from??) And second, I feel like it's been a minute since I've annoyed anyone with random useless voice acting trivia, and I need to warn remind people that this blog is also a lot of me rambling about German VAs in particular, because I’m a German obsessed with voice acting and I just can't help it.. It's a strange hobby. 😂

I’ve kinda mentioned it before on here (and I will probably never get tired of talking about it lol), but I just need you all to understand just how funny it is that Solas legitimately sounds like he could be in his twenties in German and how that makes him so much more suspicious in a way?? 😂 (To my ears, at least.) Like, judging solely by their voices, Solas genuinely sounds like he could be the youngest out of all the companions in DAI. Yes, he partially sounds even younger than Cole. (And fun fact, I actually looked it up, and his VA is in fact the youngest out of the entire main cast. lmao)

See, his German VA is known for voicing a lot of teenage boys. But that's what's so hilarious about it. Solas has this super young voice, but then he suddenly talks like this wise old grandpa with this incredible eloquence, who has apparently seen a ton of war and tragedy?? 😂

And then you just sit here on your first playthrough like.. how on earth does this work, like something doesn't add up here. Either he has to be some kind of super brain “prodigy” or he's *definitely* hiding something.. because regardless of just how long you've been "visiting the Fade", there's NO way you know about all this stuff and have THAT much experience, when you.. just came of age. lol

In general, the way he speaks he sounds like a 100 year old with the voice of a 20 - 30 year old man in a 40ish year old body. And then you just sit here talking to him, like "What even ARE you???" 😂

This is especially hilarious to me when he tries to teach Sera about how to lead a rebellion, calls HER a child and gives her all this advice, when in German, he sounds just as old as Sera if not even slightly younger than her.

I remember this one banter with Blackwall about being a war veteran on my first playthrough when he was like "You should've seen me when I was younger" and I stopped in my tracks "What are you talking about?? Aren’t you, like, 25??"

Another little thing I found funny was how they made him say "Weidmannsheil" ("Hunt well") to the Inquisitor at the Winter Palace, which is like a traditional wish for good luck among hunters around here, but also something I have NEVER heard someone under the age of 80 actually say. lmao

Idk, I just feel like it gives his character this additional interesting but kinda bizarre note, where he comes off as so young and brash, which stands in complete contrast to his extensive knowlegde and wisdom and the way he talks.

But that's also what I actually kinda love about it and in a way, it's what I picture *actual* young Solas must've been like... because, being literally called Pride, the very counterpart of Wisdom in DA, it fits so well with what seems to be his internal conflict or maybe even his own past, assuming the Wisdom spirit turning into Pride theory is true.

Like, in a way, I feel like he wants to be the person he claims to be in Inquisition, to be just himself, the man who is nothing but a humble wanderer who shares and seeks wisdom, because that’s who he truly is at his core, what is left if you strip away all the weight of history, duty and rebel leader strategist. But it’s his pride that prevents him from being that person. And given his description of himself in his “youth”, I feel like the Solas of ancient times had that pride and impulsiveness turned up to 11. 😂

Which is also why I just can't get over how much BioWare's choice for this particular VA for Solas fascinates me (and I just want to believe that there must’ve been some good reason behind this choice, given how they knew how big of a role he was going to play.. And from what I’ve heard, BioWare is very considered when it comes to casting their VAs, especially for the companions, even in different languages).

Because with all due respect and credit to the German VA of Solas, Ozan Ünal, I love his work, but with him they chose a voice actor who's mostly typecast to voice the young, nerdy, soft, kinda bubbly protagonist guy with a heart of gold. Like, just to imagine him going any kind of antagonistic route is so funny to me, because that is really the total opposite of what he usually does.

Some casting director at BioWare really sat there and listened to *this* voice and was like "Yep, that's our next antagonist". 😂 And I'm gonna be super honest here, guys.. But regardless of the other 3000 reasons why I don't think that Solas will be the ultimate threat in DA4, this is actually part of the reason why I just can't picture him as a "true villain". Or rather, I'm just super curious to see if his VA could pull that off. 😂

Like, with Gareth David-Lloyd, I feel like he can do literally anything, but Ozan Ünal sounds just way too innocent to be really taken seriously as a threat, you know. 😂

i have! i used to do that ALL THE TIME when i first got into fanfiction, but lately not so much. i miss it though, it was such fun, and it helped me get even more ideas for fics. we'd have groupchats for fics, and sometimes even go like RPG-wise to develop scenes / dialogue. when i stopped co-writing often, i would still pitch in with a few chapters / scenes for my friends’ fics, and they’d do the same for mine. i loved it, and i think the readers thought it was fun too!, but i stopped writing frequently altogether so its harder to do that, i guess. maybe now that im getting back into writing in general i’ll get back into that too. also, renée and i are planning to co-write something soon, so !!

How long do you let an idea incubate in your brain before you sit down and start on it? Do you make an outline first or just kind of start and then get together an outline?

How many ideas do you have floating around right now, and how many of those do you think you’ll write?

How long does it take you to write a chapter (I know your chapter lengths change, but let’s say 7K words. Because honestly your quality in your chapters is soooo good and only improving so I wanted to know how long it takes, how many times you reread it/edit it, etc!)

What’s the thing you like beat about your writing style that you think you do really well?

Again I was just curious for a closer look into the way you write because I think it’s so fascinating!! Hope you’re doing well! :)

FIRST OF ALL you are so sweet, i'm really honored that you like my work enough to be interested in hearing about stuff like this!!!

second of all i'm so sorry for the ramble you are about to receive haha i am incapable of being concise

- OKAY, first question: often times i'll have some vague concepts in my head for several weeks or months, but either intentionally put them on the backburner bc i need to work on other stuff or have some roadblock preventing me from starting on them--for example, with constellations i'd always wanted to write a childhood friends au, but i hadn't been able to come up with an interesting explanation for how juno and nureyev could meet as kids and didn't want to start outlining a story for that idea until i did. which ended up being for the best, bc once i finally did figure out how they'd meet (aka nureyev coming to hyperion as an illegal stowaway with a group of brahman revolutionaries), that informed pretty much every other major plot point that happens in the fic.

i do always make an outline first--i'm usually pretty uncomfortable going into writing something without having at least a general idea of all of its story beats from beginning to end (with some exceptions.....). but i also almost never turn a concept into an outline until i'm actually ready/have time to write the fic that goes along with it, bc once i have an outline i become rabid and need to write the thing asiufhaus.

- how many ideas do i have floating around right now? uhh idk, i do have a document just called "fic/art ideas" that has base concepts for a bunch of different potential works, but i don't even remember half of them. i think in a way i have a sort of... idea holding area?? full of stuff that might be cool but i don't have serious intentions to write, and then every couple months some of those ideas might float up to surface and become more developed before eventually being written.

so right now i'd say i have about five things that i'm either actively writing, have outlined, or intend to write soon (constellations ch11, bang fic, short multichapter, one shot, sequel to [spoiler]), then ~three beyond that which have no clear plans but are Likely to be written someday, aand then a dozen miscellaneous ideas that may or may not ever go anywhere.

- how long does it take me to write a chapter? (thank you btw i'm so flattered ;u; and surprised you feel like they're getting better bc tbh i was worried they were getting worse lol) hmmm, that one's tough just bc i'm so often working on multiple things. like there was a little less than a month between the two chapters i wrote most recently, but that's because i also wrote a separate one shot during that time.

i'd say maybe two weeks? but it also depends on my motivation to write the thing. i've written 10k one shots in a matter of days in the past bc i was just that inspired. constellations tends to take a bit longer just bc having to write a fic in order is the bane of my existence and i'm always writing other stuff alongside it bc if i was stuck working on only one story for seven+ months straight i'd physically die asuifhsa

as for how many times i reread or edit them.... maybe three times? i tend to read over a chapter or one shot a couple times while writing it, then one last time as an ao3 draft so i can see it complete and in its final format before posting it. if i'm working with a beta, it could be like seven or eight times though lol.

- favorite thing about my writing style.... i guess one of my favorite things in stuff i've read is the use of understatement, and so i'm proud of how i've been able to incorporate that into my own style. like, deliberately underplaying an emotional moment or stating a Very Big thing very simply as a way to underscore just how big it is. i always think of this section from the poem "ten love letters", which i also once named a fic after: "Here is the truth: It is hard to be in love with someone who is in love with someone else. I don’t know how to turn that into poetry."

i adore the idea of an emotion or circumstance being so awful that you can't even put it into words--or you have to simplify it down into something smaller in order to swallow it. which uhhh i guess i should now relate to my own work since that was the question lol. i've probably written lines inspired by that idea countless times, but two examples from ch9 of constellations are "[annie] doesn't come back in thirty minutes" and juno's line about how there's no one left to water the flowers anymore. juno doesn't actually care about the flowers, but it's a way of turning his grief into something smaller, something that can be voiced and apologized for.

UHHHHH YEAH i guess that's it asiofjsif, sorry for how long it was. i was honestly feeling pretty down earlier but this ask really helped distract me and cheer me up, so thank you so much <3

I probably won't know the fandom you'll be talking about, but I'm curious about the wip that could be made GoT or pirates or both, because that's a really wide range to cover ^^"

djf;alkhdsaoihs Okay okay I'm gonna be real honest about that draft. It was written on my phone, and was the result of seeing some really nice cross-over fanart for Star Wars and GoT, I'll reblog or edit with the artist if I can find them again. But uhh the premise was that none of the star wars characters really take place in the main plot of GoT, not directly anyways. Anakin was a Targaryen (its been so long since I've talked about GoT) Padme and Obi-Wan were distantly related to each other and Margery Tyrell, Ahsoka was a norther who wanted to learn sailing from Anakin- since he sorta ran off at some point to sail with Greyjoys, got his own crew sailed back south because you know he hasn't stopped thinking about Padme. Meanwhile, theres a group of pirates working between Dorne and Kingslanding raiding ships and sometimes straight up stealing the ships and the crew either ends up missing or stranded in life boats. Margeary ends up asking Obi-Wan to look into it, who had just gotten back in touch with Anakin and they're supposed to put a stop to it. Most of the story was going to be about "stopping" the pirates, and then Padme trying to do humanitarian things for villages caught in battles and stuff, Anakin and Dany and Jon having weird Targaryen confrontations- I did not think it through really other than Anakin looking at Jon and Dany as extremes of what he could be and do, and it turning out that Padme had been paying the pirates the whole time and she and the Captain were besties. And I think there was something about Qui-Gon still being alive, or dying as part of Robert's rebellion, and Palpatine, Little Finger and Varys being the most terrifying people in Kingslanding. Its been a while since I thought about this WIP mostly because this was all I had typed on my phone:

There were three things Sir Obi-Wan Kenobi was absolutely sure about. The first being that despite Lady Margaery's and Olena's reservations about Padmé's plan, he was confident that it was going to work. At the very least he would be able to put a face to the pirate looting their ships on the way to Kings Landing. Truthfully, he felt there was more to it than trying to make easy coin, as the only ships that seemed to be getting robbed were those carrying food and grain to port. Still even then, for some reason they never cleaned the ship out. Obi-Wan was intrigued to say the least, even if he couldn't let his curiosity show.

The second, was that inviting his former squire Anakin Skywalker was both the best and worst decision he could have made. Some time ago Anakin had decided he no longer wanted to be a knight, that he wasn't sure he truly saw the point in it. For a while Obi-Wan had heard rumors of his former apprentice claiming a Targaryen lineage, only to receive a letter telling him the exact opposite, that he, Anakin, a former knight trained by one of the best in Storms End and the Reach, had found himself among the fishermen and pirates in Pyke. Obi-Wan supposed he shouldn't have been surprised. Anakin did always always love being on the water. The only thing Anakin had seemingly mastered other than his blade work, was his ability to sail. Obi-Wan couldn't help but wonder if that was what drew the young northern girl to his former squire's side as she eagerly climbed to the top of the mast.

The third and final thought Obi-Wan had as Anakin pulled the ship away from the port, was that no matter how necessary it was, he HATED sailing.

I can't tell whether you're just really good at describing people or making fan casts because holy shit, that is EXACTLY how I pictured them, Nicky especially. He is precious!!! All I want to do is hug him! So so badly. Wow, Ethan really does look like his dad. And the twins!!!!! Ohhh they're adorable! Erica and Nicky... I love them so much. Nicky being such a wonderful father is so powerful. Him remembering Reggie never fails to destroy me. The end of regenisis haunts me. I swear, I've read the whole thing at least 6 times and every time, it hits hard.

And yeah, that Nicky and Reggie prompt was me. Shocking, I know. I wish I could tell you how many prompts I sent in, but honestly, I don't even remember at this point. I kind of freaked out when you opened prompts, and impulsively sent as many as I could think of.

(Oh yeah, I also sent in the Julie and Carrie and the Alex and Reggie prompts. And I loved them both so so much. But that tends to be a given with your writing. I'd read your grocery lists dude, I'm sure they'd be riveting)

off topic, but! I checked out your playlists! "All I've Ever Known" is SUCH a jukebox song, I was happy to see it there! I'm curious, do you happen to have any songs that you associate with any of your universes? I like linking songs to stories, plus, you have great taste in music.

Anyways I'm still lowkey screaming about your update tonight!!!! That was seriously so good. I love how you write Julie and Carrie's relationship SO SO MUCH. You just get the nuance of that tension, the awkwardness, that specific flavor of pain so well. I'm so glad the band is getting gigs! The boys plans to haunt Carrie are hysterical. They are such himbos. I love that premise and how you executed it so so much.

I didn't even think about the POSSIBILITY of you writing something for the Pattersons in that universe! When I tell you that I have literally been thinking about that all day, I mean it! Oh my god. OH my god I am not ready. I am going to sob through it, I just know. Your Patterson pieces are just...god I don't even know where to begin. You write them EXACTLY how I imagined their relationship the first time I watched the show. Emily and Luke's relationship is utterly fascinating to me, and you just find all the little things, all the broken pieces that make up the tragedy and pick through them to create the most stunning character studies. I'm so excited ( and terrified) to see what you do. And I've never seen anyone explore the messy possibilities such a revelation would bring, and I've been thinking about that since I watched the show and now YOU'RE WRITING IT and I shall scream with joy.

I've seen you talk about your sister before and i'm so sorry for your loss. The catharsis is clear, the emotions in everything you write... There's just so much love in your stories. There's so much power, so much honesty and understanding. It feels like you're sharing your heart with us. That's the only way I can think to put it.

oh god, vampire anon, you're going to kill me!! i just... thank you so much. thank you. a little piece of my heart goes into every story i write... and these past few months, it's been almost a relief to give some of them away.

you know that feeling when you've broken a glass, or a figurine, and there's just... pieces everywhere? tiny shards, jagged little fragments, and you think to yourself "... okay. maybe i can fix the bigger pieces, i can put it back together close to what it was before, but i don't know what to do with all these little, painful pieces?" and every time you touch them, they jab you, and you regret it??

that's what i've felt like, and writing has helped me get rid of those awful pieces. i'm thinking specifically, like... if i didn't know better, probably magic, cuts like broken glass. those are the pieces i'm most proud of, i think... the most cathartic ones?? like, regenesis (specifically the chapters where they're dealing with "reggie might be dying, can we really let him go") was so cathartic for me, because it really mirrored losing my sister. it's... funny what comes out when you need it to the most.

being able to look back at a painful period of life and see something you've accomplished, something worth being proud of... something that didn't just make you happy, but spread joy to other people?? like... being able to make people laugh, and cry, and feel so deeply that they connect with every word in a story... that's the gift of a writer, i think, and it's insanely powerful!

okay, so listen, i'm gonna take a while with the prompts (slow bitch with 20 wips here) but they will all get done!! hopefully they'll all be pretty good, or at least entertaining lol.

i've been working a lot on the carrie fic right now --- the outline is all finished, it's freaking going places! let me tell you, there's gonna be so much himbo activity (with a huge focus on female friendships, and repairing that painful rift between carrie, flynn, and julie!! and a bit of soul stealing, potential character death, and general spookiness in there). hopefully it will actually get finished!!

Okay so role-playing in general was always something me and my siblings did. That was mostly how we played growing up. Then, and this will probably sound dumb but oh well, when Pokemon added the chat room feature me and my sister would write out our roleplays over that at night from our bedrooms. I had to lay at the foot of my bed for the wireless connection to work back then but it was worth it lol we had some great roleplays. So really dumb ones too but we had fun. My parents used to be real strict about computer use and as a result we snuck social media accounts at the public library. To avoid getting caught we would use a fake name or a character and roll with it. My first Facebook page was for Jack Harkness actually xD my role-playing just progressed from there until I accidentally stumbled on the Tumblr rp community. Yes, it was an accident. I didn’t know Tumblr rp existed. I created this blog as a blog for me to be Spike for my own enjoyment and then people found me. I was immediately pulled to Spike as a muse the moment I met him. We have a lot in common, he and I. A lot of the same habits and feelings and pastimes. Even, as it keeps being pointed out to me, mannerisms and facial expressions. The way we approach or perform certain things (which my boyfriend likes to mention sometimes lol). I feel a very strong connection to Spike, I really do.

How did I get good at it? Uhh…well I mean it’s all relative and opinion I guess, whether or not I am decent at role-playing. But for me it’s just like how I approach acting (my life has always revolved around the stage ever since I started acting in 3rd grade). I just try to get into their head. Figure out what makes them tick, both the good and the bad. I reread everything as i write, imagine it playing out or imagine them say it/say it to myself to see how it feels. If it doesn’t feel right I will redo it until I have something can post.

So actually my first encounter with Spike wasn’t even visual. My parents love the btvs movie (it’s a great movie I love it too) and we were raised being told that the show was completely different and therefore not worthy watching. That it was bad. Later in life I was told I should watch it and kind of waffled over the idea. What finally grabbed my attention though was listening to the omwf soundtrack while my fake sister drove me home from school. I was very interested in all the songs but Rest in Peace really struck me for some reason and after learning the song in her car I went home and looked it up so I could listen to it more. Wound up pulling up a bunch of Spike clips and watching those, my brother asked what I was doing and I told him I didn’t know who this character was but I needed to watch the show now because I needed to know. Spike is what pulled me into btvs and he didn’t disappoint.

And now onto the boyfriend. We met on here. Mutuals who didn’t talk a bunch or really rp together. Would sometimes talk ooc. Would talk more around the holidays sometimes because he was willing to talk to me while I was trying to not die at my family get togethers as they don’t like me and holidays cause a lot of anxiety and depression for me so I would ask for people to talk to. Then we started talking more on cosplay stuff and medication stuff and he would suggest shows for me to watch. Met in person a bit over a yea ago at Motor City Comic Con 2016 and it was great. We mad plans for him to come out here for my local con this year and stay with me and I asked him out right after. We’ve been together 5 months now as of yesterday (Monday the 21st)

7. How often do you use references?

Not very often. (Maybe just to look up how a new tmnt character looks lol) I know using references of body poses and angles is good, very very good and useful, lots of my friends use them but I just prefer to figure stuff out on my own, I guess… When I do use references I usually study the photo or drawing for a minute trying to understand how and why everything is as it is and then I put it away and still try to come to the similar result on my own. Or I use myself as a reference. I do the weird difficult pose I want to draw, and feel and look down at myself to see where everything is positioned then I just try to picture myself from the angle I’m drawing the character in. I guess my way of doing it is kinda odd but it works for me.

But the above only applies for my personal drawings of people. At school we do live drawing where you kinda have a “living refrence” to draw. :P And when it comes to backgrounds, sceneries and bigger more detailed man-made constructions I might as well drown in references because that is so hard to draw!

9. How much time do you spend drawing on an average day?

Not as much as I used to and a lot less than I’d like. :( On regular days maybe an hour or not at all (unless you count little scribbles in the corners on notebooks). But then there are days when I actually go full on artiste and make something (usually fan art sadly :/) from start to finish. On those days I can spend the whole day just drawing one piece. :D

12. Is it okay for people to ask you about your process?

Ahh, yes, I love that! Because (speaking as mostly a fan artist onilne) it shows they’re actually interested in my art and not just the characters in it. That’s a big praise in my book.

I’m a big art nerd and love to analyze the construction of great art pieces. Especially the use of colors! And It’s always nice to see another nerd do the same with my art! xD

I usually promise people I’ll put up step by step pictures of a drawing but my bad memory mixed with my lazyness usually ends up with me forgetting! :P

15. How long does an average piece take you to complete?

Uhh! That’s kinda hard to answer since I rarely regulate myself. Simple pieces that most of my gallery is made of is let’s say from 3 to 6 hours. But since I usually color digitally I often spend a third of that time online. :P

But big pieces like my comics (the ones done with traditional lineart) and more detailed drawings/paintings go up to 20 hours of work. …And then there’s this piece that I spent 30+ hours on and I still remember loosing my soul while drawing the shells! xD

21. Do you like to challenge yourself?

Yes! I love to. Mostly from actual curiosity at how to achieve something than anything else. Though most of my fan drawings always follow the same routine I do get moments when I try approaching a piece in a completely different way eager to unlock a hidden level in my skills. :P I also love traditional tehniques! I love trying my skills in those the most but I don’t do it often because money! 

And to be honest I feel like I’m challenging myself almost whenever I draw. Even if it’s with something I’ve drawn many times already. Drawing doesn’t always come that easy to me so even with making something I already did in the past it’s still always a question of “can you still do it?” or “can you do it better this time?” :)

27. For digital artists: how many layers does a typical piece require?

Ahahaha! Okay, I hate this question because I’m kinda a layer freak… :P Especially with bigger works.

For small stuff it’s usually up to 10 layers or less. One with the (scanned) lineart, few for character color (flats, lights, shadows) and a few for the background color …and then there’s also my signature on top. :)

But then there’s big stuff like art for the Jungle AU where I sometimes use so many layers I actually folder them all so I don’t get lost. These drawing files usually have around 30 layers but “Body Paint” takes the cake with around 200… yeah…
