being an oc/canon creator in fandom feels a lot like having your own corner in the playroom where, while everyone else is participating in a big game of tag, you're playing a game of house with dolls. sometimes you'll get people coming over to check out what you're doing between turns, but most of the time you're alone.

until one day, a fellow oc/canon lover or creator finds you and spends all of playtime in your corner listening to you explain the background lore of the house and what's happening in the story.

they're the best thing to happen to your little corner.

Since I did it for Abe, I might as well also introduce you to Cavan. An OC of mine that serves a more plot relevant purpose in the narrative I've constructed with @british-hero.

So here you go, a few (slightly darker) facts about Cavan:

He was the second Larger Seagull engine to be made, making him the second oldest of his class;

As a result of his shared older brother status, Cavan took it upon himself to be a gentle guide for his younger siblings (a teaching style that contrasted heavily with his older brother, Bartholomew's, firm hand stance). He felt responsible over his kin, and did everything in his power to teach them and encourage them in their self-discovery journeys, with varying degrees of success...

Despite his nurturing and well intentioned nature, Cavan's constant attempts to placate conflict and keep everyone positive often made things worse, as he came off as either too forceful in his efforts to keep everyone smiling, or downright condescending because he didn't seem to be listening to what troubled his siblings;

Things between him and Edward were not very good at the beginning, as his constant struggle with Bartholomew to get their youngest brother to settle down post rude awakening (something which was ultimately the railworkers's fault), only seemed to infuriate the new-build. This resulted in an incident that ended with Cavan derailed and damaged due to a struggle for control over a double-heading task;

Cavan was originally the engine assigned to go to Sodor on loan, but after his accident he pleaded with his owners to let Edward go in his place. Seeing as his youngest brother seemed so unhappy being constantly put down or forced into uncomfortable situations, he thought maybe being given some responsibilities would help Edward mature a little without his siblings constantly pressuring him to fit a mold. He was ultimately correct in his assessment;

When the Furness Railway covertly sold off the Larger Seagulls to help them avoid the cutter's torch, Cavan wasn't very lucky. He was bought by a group who had some rather troubling plans for him and several other engines that they'd acquired through various (and often illegal) methods;

During his time in the Ring, an underground organization of modders that pitched heavily modified engines against each other for entertainment purposes (think robot wars crossed with dog fighting), Cavan was used mainly for test runs (as a training dummy). He was battered to such an extent that his wheels and tender were taken for scrap. Leaving him immobilized and rather miserable. Luckily he befriended another engine who took it upon herself to look after him;

After being rescued and taken to Sodor by happenstance, he was reunited with Edward. The two reconciled and opted to start over (deciding that focusing too much on the past wouldn't do either of them any favours), and while Cavan's damage was far too extensive to turn him into a working engine again, he suggested the fat controller reconfigure him into a portable generator. So long as he could still be useful, he didn't mind needing to be pushed or pulled by other engines to wherever he may be needed;

Cavan has a rather odd fascination for birds (especially seagulls). His favourite past time is bird-watching, and he can identify a bird by sight or sound alone. This of course means he's most happiest when serving as a backup generator at the harbour or, occasionally, near Henry's Forest;

While not as eccentric as Abraham, Cavan is often referred to as the Crazy Bird Engine by many engines who've found his interest for birds to be exceedingly peculiar. The ongoing rumour is that he's amassing an army (which he has done nothing to discredit as he would definitely not mind having an army of feathered friends);

Cavan seems envious of Harold to some extent, as he wishes he were able to fly. Nothing seems more freeing to him than souring through the air with no clear destination in mind.

Who is your OC that is the most fleshed out? Anything you care to share about them? What is a small detail about them that you rarely think about?

Ooh, um... That's probably Meira Winchester, my Dean/Cas/Gabe baby who's the star of a (currently) four book series over on Ao3 XD

She's the only one of my Next Gen OCs that not only has a family, childhood trauma, and general personality traits, but also relatively well fleshed-out friends, hobbies, a favourite weapon, and a college degree. (Although, by that standard, my flame-retardant SmoAce baby would come in a pretty close second, but since I'm currently reworking her entire backstory, I'm not sure she really counts right now... I'm working on it XD)

Um... Most of what I want to share about her is already in the fic I'm writing, tbh XD Honestly, the thing I haven't talked about much yet that I really want to is her friends; Azura, Jack, and Lucy. Only Azura's been mentioned in the fic so far, but the four of them have become my babies, and I love their dynamic together so much (they all of them think they're the Only Sane Man, and they're all fucking wrong XD)

But, uhh... I suppose I think it's really interesting that Meira is... at least the third (possibly fourth or fifth) in a line of my OCs who are recklessly confident social butterfly daddy's girl eldest daughters who've been condemned for something out of their control and who end up in a queer-platonic polycule with their main friend group. I'm honestly not sure what that says about me as a writer or as a person, but it's gotta say something XD

(There's Meira Winchester, of course, Gol D. Morgana and Altaria Lokdon, and then also possibly Phoenix Halliwell and Jennifer Strange... and Wei Feihao probably counts once she recovers from the childhood trauma... possibly a few others who aren't really well fleshed out enough to count, but... I can feel them taking shape that way and laughing at myself for being so damn predictable XD)

The detail that I keep forgetting and then have to remind myself of is that Meira went to college and got a degree in anthropology. It honestly wasn't a planned part of her backstory, it just came up as I was writing and I realised she would have gone to college, given the opportunity, and she would have loved it. And she would have wanted to study people, but things like sociology and psychology and such really didn't feel right, so in the end I settled on anthropology.

It keeps slipping my mind all the time, and then I'm like 'oh yeah that happened' and, honestly? I think that's probably how Meira would be about it, too, so XD

So, um. Basically I'm trying to like, start an OCverse. And you know, if you want to collaborate, and help, and bounce ideas, and have fun because this isn't supposed to be that serious all the time, and stuff, you know, that would be, COOL

It's still just a little sprout, my verse. Actually let me tell you how this started. Well you see I'm in this fandom....and I made a lot of stuff for this fandom.....and now I realised that workload is way, way too much, and I'm FINALLY just keeping it solidly on the side, or atleast trying to. People who've known me for a while will know this fandom is for the 2019 game Smile For Me. People who've known me longer than that while( if I've told them) will know I eventually accumulated all that Stuff into an AU, which I go by calling Roseverse these days.

But, Well! You don't really need to know all that,

Because, you see, this OCverse ( working name is Fading Edge after one of my first Tumblr usernames HA) started out as me OC-fying that AU, but now after a few weeks in incubation it's becoming it's own thing.

And...well....look...I have my friends, but the ones I'm talking to about this right now to try and develop it are, well Busy. So I'm reaching a branch out to you good folks on Tumblr....please, if anyone's interested, help me write!

To let this not turn into a giant ramble ...let me just put down the Qualifications(LOL) that you need to get ON THIS WAGON!;

--Uh, please be tolerant of LGBT/Queer stuff. I know this is Tumblr but one can never be too safe. I'm, like, bi, so if you hate me we can't really make this a good partnership man.

-- Not required but if you're Indian as well, Hi! I am too and most likely the majority of the OCs or atleast the main ones will be so we may have an easier time with that aspect due to our shared background, maybe. The MCs are of Tamil descent if it matters.

I think the last general thing you gotta know is that my writing is by no means a set of structured written stories but instead I prefer it to be a dialogue between me and a friend where I'll send memes, make shitty jokes, good jokes, a lot of jokes really, try for character introspection, connect the dots together and have really satisfying moments when they click, probably get Writing Blocked, have large bouts of anxiety, make lots of art, just fucking. Goof around and get over emotional ( i WILL cry) in general and maybe if the dear sun shines upoun us I will produce writings and such things of varying quality.

meet my lovely (and terribly traumatized. what's new) oc sidero "sid" aetos!! meaning "the iron eagle"

he/him

he's 20, born on october 1, 2001. currently a 1st year at dahlia academy for magical novices

his family is. very very greek. though his parents have lost touch with their culture, they named him after his grandmother

incredibly intelligent and a very talented water elemental. he's become known as a child prodigy and was personally invited to attend d.a.m.n when he had turned 18, but he didn't begin attending until just before he turned 20

he's very quiet, most people he meets just assume he's mute because the only people who've heard his voice currently are alex, his parents and the maids back home. big introvert

despite this, he's incredibly charismatic– communicating through sign language with unempowered people and telepathy with empowered people

also. he's kinda toxic

he's incredibly cunning and manipulative, completely willing to use people to attain his own goals

also. a Huge control freak . but we'll get into that

he's working on some of his toxic habits and behaviors, but only so he can be a better friend to alex. he frankly doesn't give a shit about being good for anyone else

even though he works so hard to be good for alex, something deep in his mind tells him that he doesn't deserve to be around someone so lovely

he lives in a nice apartment about a 15 minute walk from campus, shared with alex. after learning about the full certification program, he quickly signed up and is working to round out his magical prowess more. he was actually in a few water elemental classes with kody, in which they often sat next to each other. kody showed interest in sid after seeing (and feeling) the strength emanating from his core. not to mention his reputation as a prodigy

his interest was only spurred on by the sinister air that seemed to float around, not enough to feel from a distance, just enough that you’d find it if you were looking. they had met up in certain places scattered across campus a few times, during which they spoke briefly and exchanged numbers

before they could get closer, sid heard of something happening between kody and some first-year freelancer which ended with him leaving the school and running off to mckinley

he doesn’t exactly know what happened, but the fact that kody ran from his issues was definitely a dampener in his interest. but not too much, of course. sid keeps meaning to text him, but he’s pretty forgetful when it comes to things like that

he also shares most of his classes with damien. they’ve only spoken once or twice since they sit so far from each other; damien usually opting to sit at the front of the room while sid prefers seats closer to the back. they have a mutual respect after seeing each other’s magical abilities at work

he's currently unemployed. he technically won’t need a job for at least another few months, depending on how he spends his money, but he wants work experience. he just needs to find a job that he can have some control in

morally, sid is very much chaotic neutral. his mind is set on what he wants in the moment, which currently happens to be some sort of control in his life. He ran off to dahlia without caring of what it would mean for his family’s reputation, he just needed to have some agency. as seen with his magical experiments, he is more than willing to pass into the darker areas of magic work; the more taboo aspect, in order to get what he wants

the only person currently that he genuinely and fully cares about is alex

he grew up in mckinley

the only child in the wealthy aetos family- his father, mattias, is a successful prosecutor and his mother, daphne, is a well known politician in the empowered community. they're both water elementals :]]

throughout sid's childhood, his parents used their wealth to pay for the most competent (and expensive) tutors to help him hone his abilities

they focused on water elemental magic, but they also got him a wide variety of tutors who specialized in different magic fields, general education, and violin lessons. you can't have a rich kid without the violin lessons

they found that he was most proficient in telepathy, second to water elemental magic, obviously

growing up, he didn't see his parents much. they were almost always at work or on work related trips. on the rare occasion he did see them, they were at his throat to stay on top of his studies so he could represent the family well

needless to say, he wasn't very close with them

they controlled every aspect of his life, obsessed with their reputation. so much so that they almost completely cut off his contact with other kids, save from a boy 5 years older than him named alexander who served as sid's 'babysitter'. they met when sid was ten and alex was 15, and he soon became sid's best (and only) friend

despite his parent’s controlling nature, he often tried to live his life the way he wanted to. was caught, on multiple occasions trying to sneak out at night to a party he’s heard of during his classes or sneaking social media onto his phone/laptop to get some sort of social interaction

he was (almost) always reprimanded harshly by his parents, often being yelled at and lectured on how he’s disgracing the family by acting out. his only forms of comfort were his pet cat, zenith, and alex's limited abilities to reassure him

after years of feeling like none of his words truly mattered in his household, he kind of just. stopped talking. he can talk, and does so very occasionally, but usually relies on telepathy/sign language as mentioned

due to him feeling like an afterthought his entire life, he's got insanely low self esteem when it comes to him own opinions and ideas

he also began to suffer from panic attacks when he didn’t have some kind of control of a situation. this was mostly due to his lack of control throughout his childhood, thanks to his parents <3. he became so obsessed with control, in fact, that he began wondering how far he could push his water manipulation abilities

he started with small animals, trying to use the water in their bodies to control their movements. he had more than enough failures (which definitely didn’t help the disturbing thoughts that would creep through his mind), but soon enough, he became very skilled with using the water in living bodies to control their movements without harming them

at some point in his testing, he had asked alex to be his ‘lab rat’ of sorts. he didn't have any ill intent, but he also didn't have much experience with boundaries like this due to his lack of a social life growing up

alex, of course, agreed, wanting to help his friend in any way he could. through his testing, sid learned that he could not only control people’s bodies, but if he put enough work in, he could somewhat control their thoughts with telepathy. this put them in a temporary puppet-like state; similar to a vampire's trance, but not nearly as strong

he could only influence a person's thoughts with his telepathy, and his water manipulation skills were only strong enough to control a non-resistant body

of course, he kept these experiments a secret. controlling people is frowned upon in the magical world, even for vampires who use it to feed

he doesn't use these abilities much, either. there's not really a need for them in his day-to-day life at the academy
