just you. (p.js) *ೃ༄
pairing: soft dom! jay × female reader
genre: smut, fluff, soulmate au! kind of angsty it has a happy ending I swear (praise, making out, protected sex, oral (f-receiving)).
summary: in a world where everyone gets the name of their soulmate tattooed on their wrists when they turn 18, finding out your best friend is your soulmate was not how you planned your 18th birthday to go. now, what’s so bad about that you might ask? you see, jay despises the thought of soulmates. but maybe he doesn’t despise them so much when it comes to you.
please note, this work is purely that of fiction. and not meant to represent what the enhypen members are like in real life.
A/N: guys no why am I so soft,, anyway I’ve been wanting to write this for a while now, so I hope you enjoy!! and I'm reposting this now, as this didnt get a lot of notes on my old account cause of all the reporting and stuff!
word count: 3.4k
warnings: mentions of heartbreak, crying, mentions of food.
1 week ago
you bit your nails as you paced up and down your room, a nervous habit you’d picked up in your junior year of high school whilst dealing with the tremendous stress and pressure school put on you. well lucky for you, you had graduated now and your 18th birthday was just around the corner. specifically, exactly a week from now.
your best friend jay sat on your bed staring at you with amusement written all over his face as he quietly observed you, before moving up to stop you and pull your hands away from your face. “you’re going to wear yourself out” he mumbled softly, pulling you to sit next to him and rubbing your shoulder in a comforting manner.
“I know I know, I’m just nervous, what if they’re all the way on the other side of the world? or even worse, what if they’re someone I know??” the panicked expression on your face was seemingly too much for jay to handle as before you knew it, he had almost rolled off your bed, laughing his ass off at you.
you see, your “dearest” best friend jay never believed in soulmates. he himself never actually got a name on his wrist, a sign that his soulmate had not reached the age to get theirs. to say he was ecstatic would be an understatement as he was at a party that very night, hooking up with a random girl before going over to your house the next morning with a massive hangover and a sullen expression.
it hurt you to see him that way, hooking up with random people, praying that he wouldnt run into his soulmate. and it hurt even more when you thought of how his soulmate was probably so excited to meet him even if they didn’t know him yet.
if only you knew where you would be a week later, wishing it was you who never met him.
present day
the time on your phone read 11:57, and jay had shown up to your house at exactly 11:30, punctual as always, giving up his usual saturday night parties to spend the night before your special day with you instead. he held your hand in his, one thumb running up and down the expanse of your knuckles soothingly, the only thing grounding you in the tense moments before what was basically the biggest moment of your life. your eyes never met his once, only flickering from the clock to your wrist every few seconds, almost as if it would appear before time if you stared long enough.
12:00 a.m.
it was almost as if everything stopped in that moment as the words appeared on your skin. the crickets stopped chirping, that one car alarm outsode your house stopped beeping and both you and Jay stopped breathing, even if it was just for a few seconds. one by one, letter by letter, black ink slowly trailed up the soft skin on your clean wrist, marking your skin for the rest of eternity. you watched with bated breath as tbe letters curved their way into your skin, into your soul.
“P-A-R-K” looks like your soulmate would have the same last name as your best friend. “J-O-N-” that was when the realisation of what was about to happen dawned upon you. “no, no, no, no” was all you could think. “this wasn’t supposed to happen”
meeting jay’s eyes for a split second, you could see the shock on his face, the same shock you knew was written all over your face at that very moment. yanking your hand out of his warmer one, you stared at the 2 words displayed on your wrist. “park jongseong” you whispered as a one lone tear ran down your cheek, falling to you chin before disappearing into the soft material of your sweater.
this prompted jay to push up his own sleeve, the words that seem to have appeared on his wrist confirmed what you both already knew by that point. jay park, your best friend since you were 5, your rock, your everything, was your soulmate. if the situation were anything but this, you would have been jumping for joy, ecstatic that your soulmate was the man you’d grown up with your whole life. but unfortunately, that was not the case.
“_______” he whispered, voice hoarse as he held your hand in his again. gripping it tightly this time so you wouldn’t be able to let go this time. not that you wanted to anyway. “jay” you whispered back, attempting to smile at him, despite the tears that were threatening to overflow at any moment. “I-I need time to think” he said, so softly, his eyes full of nothing but remorse. “I understand jay, take your time, don’t rush okay?” you replied, squeezing his hand in reassurance. he wistfully smiled at you one last time as he pushed himself off your bed and walked out of your bedroom, closing the door with a small ‘click’, leaving you alone in the darkness of your room, mind racing and wondering what were you were going to do with this newfound information.
you fell asleep after much tossing and turning, your mind full of nothing but jay and his name that was now tattooed into the inside of your wrist. you were woken up by the bright smile of your parents, you mother holding a plate of pancakes and wishing you a happy birthday. the sight alone was enough to make you burst into tears as you wrapped your arms around her, seeking her familiar scent and comfort after the rough night you had. your parents seemed shocked, but did not press you to open up, wrapping their arms around you as they attempted to comfort you.
your mom was no foolish woman, as she seems to have caught on to what was bothering you on your special day. “its about your soulmate isn’t it?” she asked as she placed a glass of your favourite chocolate smoothie in front of you, wiping her hands on her apron. you looked up at her, disbelief written all over your face as she chuckled at you. “how did you know?” you asked as she smiled slyly at you. “I have my ways, and besides, I’m your mother” she replied with a wink. you groaned, dramatically resting your head on the counter as she laughed and gave in. “I saw jay walk out of your room last night with tears streaming down his face, and considering you woke up crying too, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what went down there”.
“you should talk it out with him sweetie, he’s not just your soulmate, he’s your best friend. despite how he feels about this whole fate thing, I’m sure the both of you will be okay.” her words reassured you as you grabbed your backpack, and walked through your front door. not even 2 minutes later you heard the biggest scream and you were tackled into a hug. giggling, you wrapped your arms around the taller boy as he squeezed you tightly. “happy birthday ______!” he said as he let go of you and continued your walk to school. “thanks sunoo” you said, smiling at the younger boy who had the biggest grin on his face.
“soooooo” he began, looking at you with an expectant expression on his face. you pursed your lips, already predicting the question that was due to escape his mouth any second from now. “jay” you said, cutting him off before he could even open his mouth. “JAY?!?!!?” he said, a little too loudly, mouth agape as he processed the information. you shrugged as he linked his arm with yours, understanding that you didnt want to talk about it.
luckily, no one pressed you about your soulmate for the rest of the day, warded off by sunoo’s glare the moment they looked like they were going to ask. you sat next to jay in all your classes, the atmosphere tense and awkward between the two of you. everyone seemed to have figured our what happened by that alone, your normally boisterous voices muted and soft. you went out after school with sunoo and riki, your mood heightened by the laughs and jokes of the two bickering boys.
when you got home, the house was eerily quiet, your parents nowhere in sight, all the lights turned off save the one in your living room. and there on the sleek grey sofa sat Jay, looking down at his hands as he anxiously played around with the rings he always wore. your footsteps alerted him of your presence, as he shot up off your sofa to greet you with a crooked smile on his face, black hair sticking up in every direction.
you smiled at him, already preparing yourself for the worst, as he walked towards you. “your parents have gone out, they handed me the keys and told me to come and talk to you if I wanted, and-” he cut himself off in the middle of his sentence, taking a deep breath and holding your hand. here goes nothing he thought. “I want to try. this whole soulmate thing I mean. maybe i wouldnt be this way if it was anyone else, but it’s you, my best friend, and I don’t want to lose you.” he mumbled out the last part, but it was still clear enough for you to hear. you couldn’t help the smile that stretched across your face at his words, his own face breaking out into a grin at your expression. you reached up on your tippy toes to wrap your arms around his neck as his hands went around your waist.
he buried his face in your hair, your soft vanilla scent calming his racing heart, and that was when he realised how much you really meant to him. he loved when you would always being him snacks after soccer practice, he loved when you let him lay his head on your lap and you ran your hands through his hair, he loved seeing the expressions you made when you ate his food, he loved you.
“I made something for you” he said, pulling away from your embrace, leading you to your kitchen and making you sit down on the counter. he grabbed a plate of your favourite pasta and a fork before lifting up a mouthful and holding it out to feed it to you. you smiled, wrapping your lips around the fork as the flavours exploded in your mouth. “oh my gosh, this is good, you’ve really outdone yourself.” he smiled at the complement before pressing a kiss to your cheek and muttering a little “happy birthday love”, leaving your face feeling hot and an uncontrollable smile on your face.
the rest of the evening went by in hin feeding you food and taking a few notes of it himself, lots of little cheek kisses, before the two of you settled down on the couch to watch a movie. it seemed like jay had gotten over his awkwardness as he pulled you to sit between his legs the moment the movie started. you looked back at him in shock, wondering when he got so bold before he pressed a kiss to your lips and told you to focus on the screen.
it might not have been the perfect first kiss, but it was with jay and that was enough. he played with your hair throughout the movie, and moved it aside at one point, pressing little kisses along the expanse of your neck. it was when he landed his lips on one particular spot that you let out a little noise, one you never even knew you could make that made him sit up a little straighter.
it was almost as if a switch flipped within him as he tightened his grip around your waist, one hand slipping up your hoodie to caress the skin near your waist. “I didn’t know you could make such pretty noises baby” he whispered in your ear, his hot breath sending shivers down your spine. “well i didn’t know i could either” you whispered back, the realisation of what was about to happen making your body feel like it was on fire.
“are you sure you want this? we don’t have to do anything you dont want to sweetheart” he said, pulling away with a kiss to your cheek. you shifted so that you were facing him, legs wrapped around his waist and you reached your hands up to play with the hair at the nape of his neck. “I’m sure jay, theres no one I’d rather do this with than you.” that was all the affirmation he needed, as within seconds you were being dragged to your bedroom by an overexcited jay.
he pressed you up against your room door, hands coming up to lift your thighs and wrap them around his waist, your core meeting his very obvious bulge. taking advantage of the gasp that left you, he allowed his tongue to skip into your mouth, taking control of every aspect of the kiss. pulling away, he brought you to your bed, gently letting you down onto the mattress, and reaching up to pull your hoodie off you.
“so beautiful” he whispered as he reached behind you to pull your bra off, before lifting his own arms to pull his own shirt off, leaving his body on display for you. just for you. he reached down to tug one of your nipples into his mouth, gently sucking and wrapping his tongue around the sensitive bud, his actions leaving your mouth open in a silent moan.
within minutes, both of you were left completely naked as jay continued to trail his lips down your body, pressing little kisses to your inner thigh before his mouth finally met your core, the smallest motion of his lips leaving you breathless and squirming. “stay still sweetheart, good girls don’t move around so much”. his words sent vibrations spreading throughout your body, not doing anything to help with the heat that was coursing through your veins.
his tongue delved in and out of your dripping hole, one of his hands rubbing your clit while the other held your legs open for him. “jay- i- I’m gonna-” but he was gone the moment the words fell from your mouth. and he was a sight to see. your juices mixed with his, drool and spit dripped down his chin, as he ran his tongue over his lips with a smirk on his face.
“oh so the baby wants to cum? don’t worry love, I’m going to make you feel so good”. he reached into his jacket and pulled out a condom before rolling it on and lining himself I with your entrance. he grasped your chin gently, pulling you up to look at him and planting a loving kiss on your lips. “I love you so much sweetheart, so so much” he whispered, pulling away from your lips. “I love you too jay” you said back, watching as he smiled once, before intertwining your hands and then, pushing himself into you.
nothing had ever felt as good in that moment as he gently, softly pushed himself inside. the feeling was euphoric, having your soulmate inside you in such an intimate manner. your bodies moulding together perfectly, bursts of colour lighting up the back of your eyelids as your eyes closed at the feeling of him in you. he began thrusting in and out of you slowly, not wanting to hurt you. but at your signal, he began moving faster, groans and moans escaping both your lips, finding pleasure and love in each other.
it didn’t take long for you to reach your high at all, his length hitting you in all the right places, leading you to ride out your high much faster than you expected, jay following soon after. he finished inside the condom, reaching out to pull it off and throw it away, before walking to your bathroom and grabbing a wet cloth to clean you up with.
he was greeted with the sight of your tired smile as he returned, gently cleaning you before tossing the rag and gathering you up in his arms, pressing a kiss to your forehead. “does this mean you’re mine now?” he asked, reaching down to bury his head in your hair, his hands absent-mindedly tracing shapes and figures on your bare shoulder. “it does if it means you’re mine too”. he smiled at your response, pulling the blanket over the two of you as you drifted off to sleep in the arms of the one person who would stay with you forever.
thank you for reading!! I hope you enjoyed and I hope you drank enough water today! ♡♡♡

«Lieutenant? The house, it—We should call in Intelligence», you said, looking over at Severide. «Why?» he asked, turning to you. «Toni—Detective Dawson may have mentioned someone they’re looking for, living at that block with their family, it might be their house», you commented. Usually the more private person, not many people at 51 knew about you and Antonio, save for Boden, in case something happened to you, and Gabby, because well, she’s his sister. «where did you get this info?» he asked, ignoring your slip-up. «I overheard him talking to Gabby the other day», you lied. «Okay, I’ll call them in», Kelly said, shrugging.
At the scene, you grabbed the necessary equipments before following Gallo and Kidd in, as instructed by Severide and Casey.
«Fire department, call out!» You shouted as you all moved in. «Kidd, over there!» you added, hearing wailing coming from close to where your co-worker was walking.
«Fire department! call out!» she shouted, making her way towards the cries for help. «It’s okay, I got you! I’m gonna get them out of here! Gallo! Wanna lend a hand?» Stella said. «You got it!» the younger fire fighter responded, running over to her.
«Severide? I’m gonna need an extra set of eyes in here, Gallo and Kidd are coming in with four people, but there might be more people in here», you said into the walkie-talkie. «I’m coming in!» Kelly responded.
You were about to reply when something hit you over the back of your head, knocking you out.
~~~
You could hardly move, or see for that matter when you came to. «Wh—what happened?» you asked aloud to no one in particular, thinking you were alone. «Shut up!» a stranger screamed, making your ears ring. I’ve got a concussion, great, you thought to yourself, feeling a shooting pain in your head.
«what do you want from me?» you asked, looking at the stranger, nothing about him looked to be familiar. So the reasoning for why you were being held captive must be for the sole purpose that you were alone in the house.
«Why the fuck is the police here?! Did you fucking call them?!» he screamed, pacing back and forth. Without a mask, he would pass out sooner or later from the smoke inhalation. But you might be dead before that, seeing as he had a fully automatic ak-47 in his hands.
«Why would we call the police to the scene of a fire, sir?» you asked, trying your best to ignore the painful ringing in your ear.
He was about to say something when Boden sounded over the walkie-talkie. «(Y/L/N)! State your location!» he said, sounding worried.
«Sir. I’m gonna have to answer my chief, or he’ll send everyone in», you reasoned, feeling the rope around your wrists, digging into your soft skin. «But I can’t do that if I’m tied up, unless you want to help me out», you added, looking at your captor.
«You’ll only run off if I let you loose!» he spat, aiming the gun at you. He wasn’t going to make it easy.
«I’m not, you got a gun, I’ve got nothing. But if you don’t let me answer my chief, none of us will survive. And I recon you want to live, seeing as your wife and children are safe», you reasoned.
«(Y/L/N)! Call out! Where are you?!» Boden asked again, sounding more panicked.
«How about this, you don’t have to untie me, just reach over and press the button on my walkie-talkie, I’ll do the talking, you don’t have to say anything.» He seemed to think about it, until he reached over.
«But you don’t tell them anything about me! Just tell them to dismiss the police. Tell them you saw no one else here, you just passed out. Once the police is gone, only then I’ll let you go. Got it?» he asked, tilting your head up to look at him.
«Got it», you responded. Pressing the button like you had instructed him, you started speaking, «I’m okay sir, just got a bit winded. I haven’t found anyone else in here, police won’t be needed», you said, just like instructed.
«(Y/L/N), Severide is coming in to help you get out, where are you?» Boden asked, you could sense in his tone he knew something was up.
«I’m okay sir, really, I’ll be out shortly», you responded. No chance in hell were you going to let your lieutenant get killed for saving you. Looking up at your captor, you waited until he had let go of the call button. «Are you going to let me go now?»
«How do I know the police is gone?» he said, sounding panicked, but tried his best to hide it behind a mean tone.
«How do you suggest I ask my chief if they’re gone without sounding suspicious huh?» he had to think about that before he grabbed you by the back of your neck and yanked you up to a standing position.
«We’ll just have to look won’t we?» he was getting braver. That couldn’t be a good sign. Dragging you over to the nearest window.
Looking out the window you could barely make out the people out there. They seemed to see you perfectly clear however as Boden came back on the walkie-talkie, «(Y/L/N), talk to me!» You knew he was stressing. If something went wrong he wouldn’t only have Antonio on his ass, but he would also lose you, one of the firefighters he basically saw as his own child. You’d been really close since you’d started working at 51.
«Tell them I’m good. Their service won’t be needed today», you said briefly. At this point your captor was getting winded, but tried his best to stay put as he pressed the weapon into you. «Sir, if we don’t get out now, none of us will live. Is that how you want your children to remember you?» You were running out of options.
«Shut up, shut up, shut up!» he screamed, pushing your upper body out of the window, holding you by the hem of your uniform jacket. Taking in as much air as you could you assessed the height that you would fall if he let go of you. I could survive it if he let go, you thought, hoping he actually would let go. But he might shoot if I try to make him drop me, your inner thoughts said, making you groan.
«(Y/L/N)!!!» Stella shouted, looking like she was ready to run over and try catching you if you decided to drop.
«I’m okay!» you called out, trying to defuse the situation. Looking up you caught a glimpse of Antonio who was looking rather pale where he stood, watching it all. «CPD, pack up!» you called out, «For the love of God man just let me go!» you added, feeling all the blood rush to your head, maybe you wouldn’t survive the fall if he let go. You might not be able to turn in time.
Your call was finally heard when you felt his grip loosen followed by the sound of someone falling to the ground behind you. Feeling about ready to pass out yourself you let gravity work its charm as you started falling out the window.
«(Y/N)!!!» Antonio shouted as you fell towards the ground, head first. «Baby!» You couldn’t remember landing, all you remembered was everything turning black.
~~~
When you came to it, there were a blinding light glowering over you. «Hmm. Whe—where am I?» you asked, placing a hand on your throbbing forehead. «Baby?! Oh thank God!» Antonio said, his voice sounding too high pitched at this time.
«Ow, my head», you groaned, both hands massaging your temples now. «I’m so sorry cariño, I’m just so happy you’re awake», he murmured, caressing your cheek. «What happened Tonio?» you asked, looking at your boyfriend.
«The guy passed out from too much smoke inhalation and let go of you, so you fell out of the window—», he started.
«By some miracle you survived, but you’ll be on bed rest for a long time though, so I wouldn’t be too keen on returning to duty any time soon», Dr. Halstead commented, walking into the room. «How long are we talking Will?» you asked, looking at him. «6 months, maybe more. We’ll have to see», he said, gaining a groan in return.
«Hermosa. You should consider yourself extremely lucky to have survived», Antonio said, rubbing your hand, which was in his hand. «I know baby, and I am. I just … Firefighting is my passion. What if I can’t ever go back?» tears were threatening to spill at this point as you looked at your boyfriend. «You’ll be back and kicking ass soon enough mi amor, but for now you need to rest and get better. And I’ll be here for you every step of the way.»
~~~
True to Dr. Hastead’s words, you were allowed back to the firehouse 6 months later. Antonio had insisted on bringing you to work for your first day, and you were not one to complain. Even with him being over you every day for the six months, having taken a lot of time off work to help you, you never got enough of the man.
«There she is!» Cruz called out, being the first to spot you. «(Y/N)! Oh my God! Finally!» Stella and Sylvie cheered, running over to hug you.
«It’s been far too long!» Sylvie added with a chuckle. «I’m so happy to be back you have no idea!» you exclaimed, hugging everyone who approached you.
After all the greetings you turned to say goodbye to your boyfriend when you found him on one knee, holding out a tiny, squared box, draped in red velvet. «Tonio?» you gasped, a hand flying up to cover your mouth.
«You’re the best thing to happen to me cariño. I can’t imagine being with anyone else. You’re great with Eva and Diego, my family absolutely adores you. I love you like crazy. So will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?» Tears were streaming down your cheeks and his as he looked at you in anticipation. «Y—yes! Yes I’ll marry you Tonio!» you exclaimed, stooping down to kiss him, your arms going around his neck instinctively. «I love you mi amor», he murmured into the kiss, raising you both to your feet. «I love you too baby», your responded, pulling away from the kiss to let him slip the gorgeous ring onto your finger, «forever?» «Forever.»
Shadow of the Stars
A Captain America and Winter soldier story
Jaylin Rogers has always struggled with being the daughter of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, mostly because of her lack of freedom. After a failed attempt to do something about this, her life is changes forever when a shadow from her father’s past returns to haunt her.
Chapter One
@skeletoresinthebasement @38leticia @purplekitten30 @fetalpositionokay @lokiyoulittle @all-hail-the-fandom --------------------------------------------------------------
CHAPTER FOUR
It didn’t take my body very long to recover, though it took a couple more days for the doctors to let me go - apparently they didn’t really believe I could’ve healed this quickly. When they finally accepted I wasn’t like normal people, I was escorted out with Sam on one side and dad on the other. The latter was still frowning and didn’t talk much while he drove me back home. I pitied I had to sit next to him, though I didn’t feel much for having to sit next to Sam; it was him whom I had sneaked off from. After the car had reached the familiarity of our home grounds, dad waited in the kitchen while Sam guided me to my room, where I packed my clothes into a suitcase, and my sketchbooks, art supplies, laptop and other personal stuff into my backpack. ‘I’m sorry, Sam,’ I said while folding shirts. My  stomach felt heavy, like it had been the last couple days, filled with guilt and shame. Gentle footsteps approached, and he came to stand beside me, helping me fill the bag. ‘I hope dad wasn’t too hard on you… I didn’t think-’ I wasn’t sure how to finish that sentence. ‘Well, that was obvious,’ Sam noted. His voice was calm, making it difficult to judge his mood. I laughed humourlessly. ‘True. But I didn’t want to get you into trouble, Sam.’ ‘Wait, what?’ Sam stopped folding and turned me towards him. His dark eyes pierced mine. ‘That’s not why I am mad at you, Jay. You brought yourself in danger, you did incredibly stupid things. I don’t care if Steve got mad at me. That’s the least t I care about.’ ‘But I don’t want all of you worrying about me,’ I complained quietly. It sounded awfully like a little child’s statement. Sam laughed, his eyes turning soft. ‘I think it’s too late for that, Jay.’
The essential parts of my belongings were loaded in the trunk of the car while I waited inside, dread building inside me. Eventually the wheels came into motion, and looking back at our beautiful wooden place, I wondered whether I would see it again.
‘If it isn’t our little hero,’ Tony announced sarcastically when I stepped out of the elevator. The whole way up, whilst in the glass cage leading up to my doom, I had prayed I’d just be able to sneak to my room, not having to face any of the residents of the Tower. Sadly, Tony seemed to have been awaiting my arrival. ‘Shut up, Tony,’ I grumbled when I walked past. I wasn’t in a good mood, partly because the ride there had been filled with one hell of a silence, loaded enough even for Sam (who was usually played the little bridge of the Rogers’ family) not to try to break it. Dad hadn’t been particularly angry, more filled with a kind of simmering frustration. I, on the other hand, was mad, very mad, for I did not want to be locked up in a Tower. And even though I didn’t wish for a prince to save me, I’d appreciate it if somebody busted me out - preferably someone with, you know, good intentions.   Tony leaned against the wall, a little smirk forming on his lips. ‘I thought I might tell you my suit is still afraid of you.’ His amused expression annoyed me even more, though at least he didn’t seem judgemental. ‘One time Tony, I swear, I just wanted to try it!’ I threw my hands up in exasperation and glared at the billionaire. Tony crossed his arms, tilting his head. ‘It took me three whole days to fix it!’ I stuck out my tongue, and Tony grinned in response.
In a very bad mood, I yanked my suitcase with me and I dropped it against the nearest couch in a very aggravated way. With my hood pulled down to my nose, I lay down and pretended to fall asleep. People bustled around me, somebody moved my suitcase away and others carried stuff around. After I had lain there for a while, all curled up in a steaming ball of displeasure, I actually drifted off. I wasn’t exactly sure if I’d napped or slept, but when I awoke there was a hush of low voices speaking. ‘You’ve seen it?’ That was Sam. He spoke quietly and with worry in his words. ‘Of course. She was fast, really fast.’ Tony was the one Sam was talking to, and he sounded both amazed and troubled. ‘That’s why Steve’s so worried,’ Sam pointed out. ‘He never thought she would have so much of him in her, not physically. She seemed quite, you know, “normal”,’ he delivered the word as if it were a cuss, ‘until now, that is.’ My right hand felt numb. Tiny prickling balls rolled up and down my arm, but I couldn’t move. There was no way I could change position without notifying the speakers I was awake. And that would, without a doubt, not be a good thing; I’d have to talk to them, trying to lie and say I hadn’t overheard them. Also, I would probably start arguing with them to let me go, for it wasn’t fair I was held captive for saving some asses. So, I’d just have to ignore my limbs turning into limp stumps of meat and muscle. ‘Maybe it was a onetime thing, adrenaline rush,’ Tony mused. ‘Though that would mean she shouldn’t experience any more stress.’ ‘Why do you think she’s here? Steve’s trying to figure something out, and in the meantime we have to make sure she stays in.’ “We have to make sure she stays in.” Sounded as if they were already prepared for a fight. Well, as Sam so obviously knew telling from the tone of his voice, I was not giving up. ‘You know, I always wondered what her genes look like, how being half human and half super soldier affected her DNA.’ ‘She’s no lab rat,’ Sam snarled. This anger war pretty uncharacteristic – usually he was the one staying calm at all times. ‘That’s not what I meant,’ Tony said hastily. He, too, sounded pretty shocked. ‘Yeah, I know. Sorry, man. It’s just… we tried to keep her away from this world, you know? I hoped she could have a peaceful life, anonymously and safe.’ Tony snorted bitterly. ‘If your father is head deep into this world, I doubt it is possible to stay out of it.’ ‘Guess you’re right.’ Sam sounded tired, and I imagined him rubbing his eyes. Tony cleared his throat, moving in his seat, which squeaked. ‘She’s gonna hate it here, she needs freedom.’ He let out a dry laugh. ‘Typical.’ ‘Yes, she will,’ Sam agreed warily. ‘But for now, I think her safety is more important than her being “free”.’ Sam didn’t laugh, not even in an unamused manner.
A door opened, and smooth, soft footsteps closed in. ‘Hey, Steve. You okay?’ ‘I’m alright, Sam, thank you. I think her room is ready; I tried to make it look a bit like home…’ he sighed heavily, ‘I don’t know what to do. I should have known she shouldn’t be alone, not today…’ ‘Steve, it’s not your fault.’ ‘Who’s is it, then?’ He sighed again, and I heard him come closer. Quickly I concentrated on relaxing my body. 'I can still remember the little girl who didn't know she was different. She used to be so proud she could beat all the boys in football. Now she’s being dragged into this world...’ Suddenly I felt him pick me up and carry me. A shudder almost went down my spine when I, too, remembered that little girl. How I wished I could be her again. Dad put me in my bed and tucked me in. The soft blanket hugged me tight and I sank down into the fluffy pillows. 'Good night,' he whispered and kissed my forehead. I wanted to hug him so badly, but I couldn't, as he would know I had heard them talk. Silently cursing myself and the world, I fell yet again asleep.
