reread the chapter w/ Lyla's last convo with Helene just to see if i can glean what's going on more and oh. Ohhh. OWWWW

so Helene fucked up her last chance to bond with her real sister, huh? and it's Helene who ultimately pushed Lyla to trade lives with the protagonist, huh?

All Helene had to do was admit she cared for Lyla and was checking up on her during the night to make sure she was okay. Instead she chose to lash out at Lyla in the hopes of convincing Lyla to run away and...well...that was a bad decision now wasn't it OTL

#Helene is my favorite character so i adore her to bits but im sitting here going woooOOOOOW at her right now lol #Lyla was literally holding on to the hope that Helene still loved her as a sister and reconciliation was still possible based on her action #so when Helene shattered those hopes by being cruel to her instead of honestly admitting she still cares for Lyla as a sister #...ouch :')#it's even worse when you realize Helene was being mean to Lyla to try and get her to run away and live a happier life elsewhere #and that her nightly visits were likely her way of checking up on Lyla since she can't do it in front of her mother or let Lyla know she's-#still cared about for fear of Lyla growing attached to her and staying behind to continually face abuse bc of Helene #and by the time “Lyla” arrives Helene was already poisoned by her own mother into believing Lyla doesn't care about her #which was further emphasized by the way Lyla stopped paying attention to Helene and chasing after her #and how “Lyla” never once addressed the night she magic overloaded and instead went to acting as if nothing was wrong by acting friendly-#with Helene as if all their history together disappeared overnight #and then suddenly Lyla decides she wants to compete for the throne? And that she's getting all the attention from their father in doing so?#yeah no wonder Helene's been so flip-floppy towards Lyla she's hurt by the girl's actions & lashing out while still loving Lyla as a sister #so of course she's going to be both mean and strangely caring towards Lyla bc she's conflicted af and it shows #god i love piecing together what motivates Helene's actions as a character because she is so deeply and utterly complex holy shit
